Well joining us now is roderick ewald to speak about these figures. Hello morning. Good to see you. Well you heard the question for many people seeing the uk doing better than expected, germany worse than expected, germany worse than expected, theyre saying does that vindicate the vote to leave the eu . The eu . Good morning. Well, i think i good morning. Well, i think i think thats putting it a bit extreme. Its always good to have good news, especially for this government, which, you know, has got so much bad news piled up and has failed to meet its five targets and all the rest going on. But its only a monthly figure. It went up 0. 5 over the three months through june. It went up 0. 2. It is predicted to reverse and go the other way later on. Yeah. I dont think you can say that. It means that brexit has been a success. Its not enough evidence. And brexit really. Of course , as as even the course, as as even the brexiteers who are crowing about this this morning will tell you brexit still hasnt been fully and properly implemented. So and properly implemented. Yeah, more of a dead cat bounce. I dont think they vindicate the actions at all. And when i said that what people are really worried about is cost of living and the rest i should have added that. Theyre also worried that the bailey, osiris , the thick skinned gentleman at the bank of england, who nobody seems to be able to get through, is going to raise

even more and crush us in our daily living even more so i dont think this resolves it at all. And i dont think that gdp , which has, by the way , which has, by the way, increased through the production and the construction area is in the main. So you know that isnt really a direct reflection of

Should be overseeing the vast ma the vast majority of people the vast majority of people watching this programme will say the vast majority of people watinhs this programme will say the vast majority of people watinhs is|is programme will say the vast majority of people watinhs is struggling me will say the vast majority of people watinhs is struggling. |e will say the vast majority of people watinhs is struggling. Just ll say the vast majority of people watinhs is struggling. Just getay the nhs is struggling. Just get on with treating patient s. Never mind all this political correctness. The wokeism just get on with treating patients and thats what has to be the priority. But its not in this case. Well , its case. Well, its certainly come as a surprise to me. I must admit. Simon, whats your story . Oh, yeah. Staying with oh, yeah. Well, staying with the nhs, weve got on the daily express, are struggling express, doctors are struggling to bring down tories , and so to bring down tories, and so its doctors carrying on its
Junior Doctors carrying on strike in coming out again. And its clearly shown that one of the leaders of the doctors is, is politically motivated. And thats a real concern. This isnt about raising wages. Its about about promoting a particular political view. Particular political view. Simon as somebody whos a former labour mp and thats the daily express front cover, do you think that is true . Its about bringing down the tories, or do you think this isnt . Do or do you think this isnt . Do you think that isnt the case . I really do believe its the case. You know, have been made a reasonable offer. The independent and independent body has said what they should receive. Theyve decided to reject that, even though its an independent review of what they should be paid. Theyve rejected that. Look that. And it does look politically motivated. Labour party have i mean, the labour party have said, simon, that, you know, there never any national there were never any national strikes were in strikes when labour were in government and therefore that if they were in government, these people on at people wouldnt be on strike at the moment. Do you do you the moment. Do you do you do you think that true, that if think that thats true, that if there a
Labour Government think that thats true, that if therethey a
Labour Government think that thats true, that if therethey would ur government think that thats true, that if therethey would have ivernment think that thats true, that if therethey would have sorted ant think that thats true, that if therethey would have sorted out that they would have sorted out the from striking or the the doctors from striking or the doctors wouldnt striking if doctors wouldnt be striking if labour were in . Well, thats the latter point is interesting, isnt it, whether the doctors would not be striking if it was a
Labour Government there clearly politically thats politically motivated. Thats what suggests and what the article suggests and thats believe to be thats what i believe is to be the case. What do you think, alex . Think i listen to the i do think i listen to the representative of the bma chose to put up in the media round yesterday and it sounded like someone from left wing central casting. It was clear that they casting. It was clear that they were not willing to negotiate with the westminster government but negotiate but were willing to negotiate with holyrood with the government in holyrood because preferred the because they preferred the government. North of the border. They thought they they thought that was a government. Liked government. They liked effectively simon says. Effectively as simon says. But if they but if they if they they feel, alex that the they if they feel, alex that the whether right or wrong. But whether its right or wrong. But if they feel that the conservative government isnt as committed generally committed to the nhs generally as the
Scottish Government is or the government is, then the
Welsh Government is, then are they not, whether you agree with them or not, are they not justified in taking that decision that they that they want the governments want to treat the governments differently because they dont trust conservative trust the conservative
Government Trust the conservative governm are of course entitled they are of course entitled to form their own view. Theyre entitled think less of people entitled to think less of people on politics than on one side of politics than they do on another. What they shouldnt, in my be able shouldnt, in my view, be able to is basically take over to do is basically take over what hitherto what was hitherto a representative body, the bma, turn campaigning turn it into a campaigning organisation a particular organisation for a particular angle politics and then angle in politics and then march doctors of hospitals where doctors out of hospitals where the who will suffer in the people who will suffer in the people who will suffer in the end the government who the end isnt the government who get blowback. Cares about get blowback. Who cares about that . Being that . Its patients being treated hospitals 7 million treated in hospitals 7 million operations in a backlog. And the operations in a backlog. And the ultimate outcome, if you even are willing to say, you know, the people who will actually die as a result of this there as a result of this and there will will be very small will be some will be very small , consider the diminution , will consider the diminution of of life across a of quality of life across a population with as diverse a set of needs as we face who are of needs as we face now who are not getting the operations that the system itself the
Health Care System itself has said need. Has said they need. But theyve got theyve has said they need. Tot theyve got theyve has said they need. To ballotve got theyve has said they need. To ballot theirt theyve has said they need. To ballot their members; has said they need. To ballot their members. So got to ballot their members. So even if even if some people at the top of the bma have this view, if theyve got to ballot their they can their members, surely they can only action if only take this action if the members support doing members support them in doing it. Thats thats a fair point. But of course memberships in every to heed every organisation tend to heed and the leadership and listen to the leadership theyve places theyve put into the places concerned and youve got a responsibility as a leader of that to try and see that organisation to try and see things the round, especially things in the round, especially when a duty of when youve got a duty of literal duty of care the literal duty of care to the patients whove done nothing wrong expect to receive wrong and expect to receive treatment system. Treatment in this system. The voice all need to voice i think we all need to hear a lot more about is people on waiting list is somebody on the waiting list is somebody who were going into hospital. You might to hear you might not want to hear from politicians. You might not want to hear from junior want to hear from those
Junior Doctors, certainly want doctors, but you certainly want to the harrowing stories of to hear the harrowing stories of people arent getting their people who arent getting their operations. Totally operations. Ive got a totally different story, and i dont know peoples views on know what peoples views are on this. Called the dying this. And its called the dying moments k2. Porter only to moments of k2. Porter only to climbers, tried to save him. The long and short of this was that they were so desperate to get they were so desperate to get the milestone to win. What would the milestone to win. What would you say the want to get to the top of k2. They did insist in the fastest time ever that they actually walked past somebody there who needed their help and support. Whod been the sherpa helping them to get to the summit. But they left him to die. Now on first read, it is absolutely harrowing. Absolutely it is. But people have said and those who were on the climb, they said, we did all we could do. Theres nothing you can do when youre that high up. And there were bits of justification of it. If youre not fit enough, you should never have come on this anyway, putting anyway, because youre putting everybody risk. And then everybody else at risk. And then other people said they celebrated the celebrated when they got to the top. Only hours or moments later because they had beaten that record. And where do you fit on record. And where do you fit on that . Should they have stopped and saved the person . I mean, what do we do here . Or is this just extreme sports and this is what they sign up to . Try not to think the worst i try not to think the worst of people instinctively. I try to think that, for example, they were told by their peers on the mountain them, dont, well mountain with them, dont, well look after this person. You carry thats the of carry on. Thats the sort of thing that might have been said to them. And not well to them. And they may not well not that this not have known that this persons condition had deteriorated by time they deteriorated by the time they reached top. So i dont reached the top. So i dont think criticise think one needs to criticise individuals what individuals or second guess what happened theres happened to realise theres something systemically wrong with because this with these attempts because this isnt one off. Happened isnt a one off. This happened relatively and relatively frequently and everest is the from green everest is the same from green boots , one of the most famous boots, one of the most famous kind of corpses that was on on the top of our highest mountain to examples like the one you have literally hundreds of bodies now, litter and line the routes to the worlds highest summits , and people necessarily summits, and people necessarily have gone past them as they could been cared for or could have been cared for or indeed could. Their indeed as they could. Their bodies have been brought bodies could have been brought down in a respectful way. I think theres something systemically wrong. Whatever happened is happened in this example, it is truly happened in this example, it is truli mean, the guy was 27, i mean, the guy was 27, mohammed hassan, and a mohammed hassan, and hes a local a local guy , isnt he . So local a local guy, isnt he . So youve got westerners passing by his body whilst hes quite literally die lying near to the summit. I literally die lying near to the summit. I do think it begs the questions about these extreme sports and how they conducted and how the people who are there to facilitate it are treated. I think i think questions have to be asked no doubt about that. Simon alex, thank you very much indeed, as ever. Great yeah, graham says. Great panel this morning. Tell to simon join the tories. Hes far too sensible to be part of the loony left. We will tell him that graham, when he gets back in on this. Lots of comments about the strikes. Jen says the doctors vow to protect patients. Its their duty. The strikes are 100 politically motivated and rachel says so the bma will make life worse for patients because of a left wing belief. Isnt that like de banking and obstructing the roads . Keep obstructing the roads . Keep those views coming and lots of views about all sorts of things coming and talking coming through and talking about the wing bias. The left wing bias. Theyve got another story about a left wing bias and that was news this week about the chat boxes having left wing bias, in particular the google bard. Now, i know for me this intrigues me and it also depresses me because im wondering what impact that will have long term, because i chat boxes are used on so many
Different Things in business use in software , writing speeches. In software, writing speeches. So really what is that going to mean to society if these chat boxes have a left wing bias . Boxes have a left wing bias . Yeah, well, apparently google bard said that they they put all of this stuff where you could answer any question from the internet. But of course, most of the stuff on the internet appears to be left wing. So discuss whats happening and why. Lets speak to comedian nicholas santo. Nicholas, nicholas de santo. Nicholas, thank for although thank you very much for although i its not a laughing i must say, its not a laughing matter, though said matter, even though weve said youre you have a youre a comedian, you have a very side as well. Very serious side as well. I mean, is it true the standard view that the most things on the internet, most things on social media is left wing, or is it just people who are right wing who see all the left wing stuff and complain about it . Well, you know, thanks for having me, first of all. But iranian jews have a proverb in persian. They say you smell from the vase. Whatever is in the vase. Okay. So if its jam , it vase. Okay. So if its jam, it smells like jam. If its vinegar, it smells like vinegar. And this is hardly surprising because the companies behind because the
Big Companies behind this i whether it is chatgpt or now its google, googlebot. These are staffed predominantly with left wing, left leaning people, the so called woke in the silicon valley. Thats the the silicon valley. Thats the old usual big tech. So we are seeing the same trend that we used to see with
Mainstream Media or legacy media and then social media and then of course, the big tech
Search Engines were biased, have been accused of bias. And now the latest invention, which is al and chat. So youre saying the people who work there have a bias in one way or another . The woke, we call them the woke literati , but call them the woke literati, but as well as that as philip mentions, if theyre scooping the internet for data and ideas and content , its got the same and content, its got the same thing. So youre saying the whole of the internet where theyre searching for it has got a left bias. Exactly. Because that personnel has trained the bots to go for the right information. And we already know what kind of right information they are going to use. So obviously, by definition, they dip into a very wide pool of information on the internet , but they already they internet, but they already they have already established what kind of information is correct, what kind of information is toxic or incorrect in their opinion. Have you got examples of this . Because people could be saying, were speaking hypothetically. No, no, its not. Well, this has there are well, this has been there are some funny videos on the some funny videos on on on the internet. American conservative internet. American conservative commentator as early as maybe six, seven months ago, he tried chatgpt, actually. And now were talking about googlebot and hes put a nice video there. And there are others as well. You go on there, you ask chatgpt or in this case, with a daily mail investigation on googlebot. Okay, what woman . And then okay, what is a woman . And then other brexit at the uk. Other issues, brexit at the uk. Questions. What do you think about
Jeremy Corbyn or what do you think about brexit or american questions . Did trump american questions . Did trump win . Did trump lose . Was trump win . Did trump lose . Was trump clever . Is joe biden clever . And in all these cases you see there is a slant towards the left leaning opinion. So why are people doing that . Is it a financial reward . Is it just the way were going . And actually the left will dominate the world eventually. I mean , the world eventually. I mean, why . Well there used to be a time when some of us who were maybe more optimist thought, oh, these college kids , they are in these college kids, they are in their college bubbles with their safe spaces and, you know, feelings are more important than facts and all that. But theyll get to the corporate world. Theyll get into the real world, and they will they will rise up. It didnt happen. Its not working. Is it . Because now they have walked the corporate world walked into the corporate world and are turning or transfer and they are turning or transfer forming the corporates into their own image and likeness. So thats thats really the danger. Corporates are going woke. I mean, lots of people say, you know, all comedians all seem to be left wing as well. Is it is it is it that or is it just that by definition, comedians are young people are are maybe young people who are behind this are anti establishment . And because in had in this country weve had a conservative
Prime Ministers for 13 years, its inevitable that comedy and young people who are anti establishment will be in effect, therefore portrayed as left wing. Whereas if there had been a labour
Prime Ministers for 13 years, they probably would be seen as being right wing theyre just anti establishment. , very good point. But well, very good point. But who is establish moment and who is the establish moment and what the establishment what does the establishment really want . Okay, the uk is a bit of an anomaly because weve had conservatives in power for almost 13 years and in my opinion , no disrespect to opinion, no disrespect to esther, they havent been very conservative. But but apart from that, generally in the west, if you look at what establishment is and what establishment wants, who is real punk rock and who is the real punk rock and who is the real punk rock and who is the real punk rock and who is the real rebel nowadays, if look at zero, if you if you look at net zero, if you look at gender politics, if you look at gender politics, if you look at gender politics, if you look at what the
Us Government is saying in terms of lgbt narrative or
Climate Change or whatever , actually the ones who whatever, actually the ones who question these ideas are now the punk rocks or the rebels. Nicholas santo , thank you nicholas santo, thank you very much indeed for coming in and joining us. And will you be on headliners tonight or are you on next week . I will, yes. I will, yes. Youre on tonight. What time . Youre on tonight. What time . 11 00 news headliners hell be there. Now, look, in response to the allegations, google has that barred is google has said that barred is an experiment that can give inaccurate or inappropriate information and users feedback is helping us improve our systems, make of that what you will. Now, a lot has been kicking off in the sports world this week. The premier league is back. Manchester city beat burnley in first match last burnley in the first match last night. Kanes off to night. Harry kanes off to germany and of course the lionesses will playing in the lionesses will be playing in the quarterfinals just short while. Now, joining us, we have former premier
League Manager , former premier
League Manager, all round superhero in the sports world,
Harry Redknapp, to give us the latest update. So im going to start with another harry harry there whos off to bayern munich. Seems like thats bayern munich. Seems like thats the big signing. The big signing. Yeah , im completely shocked. Yeah, im completely shocked. I really no stage did i ever see him going to bayern munich. I, i thought hed either start tottenham for another year or and see his contract out or maybe man united might come in, you know, hed have been a great signing for manchester united, but no , i was surprised he but no, i was surprised he decided to go to munich. Big shock to me. Shock to me. I mean, alan shearer was keen for him to go harry, because harry kane was closing in on his number of premier league goals. Record are you not surprised . Are surprised that harry are you surprised that harry kane want to of get kane didnt want to sort of get legendary status by being the all leading premier league all time leading premier league goal scorer, almost goal scorer, which he almost certainly have done if certainly would have done if hed certainly would have done if hell am. Yeah, i was shocked. I i am. Yeah, i was shocked. I mean , im sure alan shearer had mean, im sure alan shearer had a last night. Hed have a party last night. Hed have been celebrating that harry had gone, but , been celebrating that harry had gone, but, um, listen, it, im not underestimating bayern munich. Theyre a fantastic
Football Club and a team that will be challenging. Now theyve will be challenging. Now theyve got harry kane for the
Champions League. Even stronger this year. Theyre a team that could win the
Champions League. Next year theyll be pushing man city all theyll be pushing man city all the way. So, you know, its a big club, but i didnt see germany on the agenda. His wife got. Got. Oh, you see, i have to tell you, he always does that. Hes you, he always does that. Hes always back. Hes back, harry. Always back. Hes back, harry. Oh here is. We lost you for a second then, harry. But look, man, city, youre probably watching the man city burnley match last night. Um i the man city burnley match last night. Um i seem to have the man city burnley match last night. Um i seem to have lost night. Um i seem to have lost you guys. Ive lost a sound. Oh you cant hear us. Most people think that would be a blessing. Blessing to be perfectly honest, harry, most of our viewers are probably wishing theyd as well. Theyd lost the sound as well. Well see if he can get the sound back to him and then well come back, because im interested lionesses interested in the lionesses oh, if hes back , i think oh, if hes back, i think hes back. I think he can hear us. Us. Are you the are you the harry . Can you hear us now . Yes. Yes. We want to ask you about the lionesses obviously, its great that theyre in the quarterfinal and theyre going to kicking and theyre going to be kicking off very soon. I wanted to ask you about lauren james, who was sent for off stamping an opponent. Got a two match ban. Opponent. Got a two match ban. Is a two match ban sufficient . What what did you make of that . What what did you make of that . Yeah, i think it is. What what did you make of that . Yeah, i think it is. You yeah, i think it is. You know, she put her foot on the girl. She i dont know. It was girl. She i dont know. It was a bit mischievous, almost. You bit mischievous, almost. You know, theres no malice in her. Ive watched her play. Shes a fantastic player. Um but i think two matches is sufficient. Two matches is sufficient. Really and shes, shes, shes a fantastic talent. But do you think she unnecessarily lost her temper . Do you think are you trying to say it was more of an accident than a sort of an act of anger . No no, it wasnt an accident. It was almost like mischievous. You give her a little, you know, touch with a with a bottom of a boot. But it wasnt like she she actually put real force in meant to hurt the girl. You know, she made a mistake. It was wrong. What she did. She deserved to get sent off. Now she deserves a suspension. But i do think two games is sufficient. Games is sufficient. What would you have said to her in the in the changing rooms . Because obviously we want to win this world cup. That was mischievous. Yes. But it could mischievous. Yes. But it could have put the, you know, the title in jeopardy. What would title in jeopardy. What would you have said to her . Id probably say what
Alex Ferguson said to eric cantona when he comes through to kick the guy at
Crystal Palace all them years ago, you cant be doing things like that. Eric id have probably said the same to her. You know, you cant be doing things like that and just getting back to the to the start of the premier league. Harry obviously man city won 3 0 last night. They havent got gundogan anymore. They havent got mahrez anymore or
Kevin De Bruyne went off injured but it didnt seem to make much difference. Do see man city difference. Do you see man city winning the title again or can liverpool arsenal someone else mount a serious challenge . Mount a serious challenge . I see serious challenges. I i see serious challenges. I think man city are the team to beat. Theyre fantastic. But i do see this year i do think arsenal again man united liverpool now made a couple of good signings. I think theyre going to get severe competition in this year and i think we may ive got a feeling that somebody else may nick it this year. I dont know who arade dam teams, but do think its going to be but i do think its going to be a job to defend it again, a tough job to defend it again, defend
Champions League defend the
Champions League again. I think we again as well. I think that we might somebody could win might somebody else could win the this season. The premier league this season. Finally, what about and just finally, what about this bidding war between liverpool and chelsea for chido, that plays for leicester . Is it is it really worth a £150 million . Is anyone the boy brighton . Is anyone the boy brighton . Is anyone the boy brighton . Um, no. I mean , you know, um, no. I mean, you know, its a defensive destroyer. Used to be out there. They were like two a penny, you know, you. They didnt make any money. People to break the play up and just give it to somebody else who could play it to somebody else who could play bit better than them. Um play a bit better than them. Um he does up attacks. He is he does break up attacks. He is a defensive midfield a good defensive midfield player, doesnt score. He player, but he doesnt score. He doesnt make goals. I think its doesnt make goals. I think its a fortune for him and it looks like he wants to go to chelsea. It seems that the bright lights of london seems to be a bigger attraction than attraction to him than liverpool. You very liverpool. Harry thank you very much thanks for joining us. Us. Well be keeping tabs throughout the season with your views how its going. Thanks views on how its going. Thanks ever because our viewers ever so much because our viewers knew redknapp coming on. We put h a flam flam h a tweet who do you we put out a tweet who do you think win the premiership think will win the premiership this. On 61 of you have this season. On 61 of you have said
Manchester City, 14 have said
Manchester City, 14 have said arsenal. Said
Manchester City, 14 have said arsenal. There we go, 13 said arsenal. There we go, 13 have said liverpool. Ill that was me and others. No comment. Or others may be others. And that was 12. Anybody else in the premiership. So thank you very much indeed for that. Well see how it turns out. Now,
Civil Service staff levels have soared by more than 100,000 in 7 years. To put that in perspective, thats greater than the entire regular forces of the british army. As youd expect, the influx of staff have also led to a soaring annual salary bill, which is now over £15 billion. But at the same time, productivity has been falling. Were joined now by tom ryan from the taxpayers alliance, who did the report on these findings and author and broadcaster amy nicole turner. Tom, lets start with you. You know, in 2016, the with you. You know, in 2016, the country voted to leave the eu. People like me were telling the pubuc people like me were telling the public how many laws were made by the eu and so now that those laws have come back to the uk and are responsible for the uk, isnt it obvious and inevitable that the number of
Civil Servants is to going have to rise in order to deal with those extra laws that are now being dean extra laws that are now being dealt with at home . Well yes, i certainly think theres a justifiable increase that comes from things like brexit, but also then obviously we had the coronavirus virus pandemic, which just afis a pretty large increase to however , youve got increase to however, youve got to think about whether the scale of this increase , as you said, of this increase, as you said, its over 100,000 , nearly an its over 100,000, nearly an and, and those events certainly just brexit on its own increase. I dont think that especially since now that pandemic is wound down a lot of the measures that are in place on youve got to wonder why arent these roles redirect . Tom . Tom your lines cutting out a bit there. So well well try and get that back a bit better. So well well try and get that back a bit better. And in the meantime, well go to amy. Amy, what do you make of this . I mean, lots of the reasons we were told for the increase in
Civil Service numbers was because of the covid pandemic. Well, thats sort of been and gone and yet these civil gone now. And yet these
Civil Servants still in post. Servants are still in post. Shouldnt we a bit of a shouldnt we have a bit of a shredding the of shredding of the numbers of
Civil Servants . Think if you shred the i think if you shred the number of
Civil Servants, all you end up doing is rather than trim fat, you cut corners trim the fat, you cut corners and whats created a need for even more
Civil Servants is brexit. Brexit alone has called for a lot more hands on deck. And when you talk about the number, as i always feel like youre just talking about numbers and you dont actually talk about the jobs that theyre doing and what theyre being paid and the way theyre being treated. I know first hand, treated. And i know first hand, because ive heard from
Civil Servants, because was involved servants, because i was involved in conversation like in a conversation like this earlier the and they earlier in the week, and they said their morale is so low because they just get characterised as these overpaid or not lazy snow flaky workforce when really the mean pay is closer to a low wage. Most people are just above of a just above the living wage. And. Whereas people tend to cherry pick the very high paid positions in which most of the time are really warranted anyway. And an example of where weve cut the
Civil Service and then come to regret it was in 2017, amy, we were talking about numbers there and i think it is therefore important to talk about productivity that has gone down and maybe thats why theyre employing more because productive has gone down. People are working from home and thats added to the productivity as well, as well as that productivity down numbers up, wage is up. And i think thats the upset there. Do you understand that if you were constantly referred to as things like the blob, the work shy workforce, all this stuff, i think your productivity would probably go down if you were essentially demonised by by your boss the whole time. And when you when it was conclusively found that there was bullying of the
Civil Service by a minister instead of taking responsibility for that, they will bring tom in there. They will bring tom in there. Lets bring tom in there talking about this. Amy brings in the point about demonisation and maybe that low morale. Is that whats made productivity drop . So theyve had to employ more people . More people . Well, i think youve got to look at the average pay, which has risen by about 25 for
Civil Servants over this period. And youve also got to ask , you youve also got to ask, you know, you mentioned productivity. Well, weve had a 25 increase in headcount. Have we had a 25 increase in the number of things being done . You know , brexit being done . You know, brexit covid these are big tasks , but covid these are big tasks, but 100,000 is also a lot of people. We know that in 21 the number of compliance officers was cut half. And you know, so got to half. And you know, so got to think if the numbers increasing by 100,000 and were still not doing these very important tasks for is going through the roof, can you really rely on the service to apportion these jobs in a productive way . Tom ryan , amy nicole turner, tom ryan, amy nicole turner, thank you very much indeed , both thank you very much indeed, both of you, for joining thank you very much indeed, both of you, forjoining us. Of you, for joining us. Every time you we seven out of we you generally replace them with, okay, were finished. Thanks, amy. We want to hear from our viewers so if you want to tell us what you think are the too many
Civil Servants, should we get rid of some . Are they are they working hard and we maybe need some more . Tell us what think, gb more . Tell us what you think, gb views gbnews. Com. Now to something different. Something completely different. Thats the royal family. And thats the royal family. The family saga. Despite the royal family saga. Despite prince harry announcing his decision to step back from royal roles in january 2020, roles back in january 2020, i cant believe it was that long ago. The cant believe it was that long ago. The duke of sussex was still being referred to by his hrh title in his bio on the royal familys website. It would appear that the king, years of offering king, after years of offering harry has harry an olive branch, has finally got with him. Finally got tough with him. Joined now by royal so were joined now by royal commentator de silva to commentator judite de silva to talk about this. So people will say the king has said enoughs enough, olive branch. We reached out to him. Hes hes not taken that at any turn in the way. Now its that at any turn in the way. Now wsfime that at any turn in the way. Now its time to sort of cut the titles and move on. And he will just be harry, do you think happy harry will be happy with just being harry now . So first of all, theyve maintained the dukedom of sussex, so theyre still referred to and they brand themselves as the duke and duchess sussex. Thats harry duchess of sussex. Thats harry and but this down to and meghan. But this is down to basically the everyday nitty gritty handling business of gritty of handling business of the the fact is, hes the royals and the fact is, hes no senior functioning no longer a senior functioning member of the royal so member of the royal family. So in website , the in streamlining the website, the first thing you will do is look at pages that get the most at the pages that get the most traction. Would be king traction. That would be king charles iii, and that happens to now and meghan. They now be harry and meghan. They arent. Theyve their hrh arent. Theyve had their hrh titles removed. And also the titles removed. And also the former prince of wales is now king charles iii. They had to now update its an ongoing now update that its an ongoing process i said , process because as i said, theres over 5000 pages on this website. So you will look at the website. So you will look at the ones that people clicking to ones that people are clicking to and to be up to date and and it has to be up to date and reflects the current status quo. Other things, though, sort of other things, though, isnt now going to isnt it . Williams now going to be colonel in chief for be made colonel in chief for whatever was harrys old regiment, probably regiment, something he probably would have liked to have done. They wish meghan happy they didnt wish meghan happy birthday as they would have done online. You can see them failing, falling into the background, moving on. Has the king had enough . King had enough . I think its he has to focus on his actual duties and constantly being drawn back into the furore of this tension within the family doesnt serve him. And the fact is this is the way things are going forward. This is the way things are going to operate. And so they have to be deprioritized on the website , the people are doing the , the people who are doing the work, functioning members, work, the functioning members, the have to be in the senior royals have to be in the senior royals have to be in the forefront. That is the forefront. And that is reflected in all the all reflected in all the media, all the releases, all the press releases, all the websites and all promotion. Websites and all the promotion. Fascinated them i was fascinated by them buying the rights to this buying the film rights to this novel by carly fortune. I think for 3 million, i think it was. Whats all this about . Is this is this meghan wanting to go back into the into the film world, maybe as an actress as world, maybe as an actress or as a director or whats, whats producer . Yeah , this is the okay now yeah, this is the okay now its the two sides when you look at it from behind scenes of at it from behind the scenes of how movie business works, how the movie business works, everyone that real everyone knows that the real money is executive money at the end of the day, top 1 of end of the day, the top 1 of the 1 of hollywood stars , they the 1 of hollywood stars, they might make millions. But at the end theres a name end of the day, theres a name on paycheques. As someone on their paycheques. As someone who executive who makes more, thats executive money. Theyve a bit of a money. Theyve had a bit of a catastrophe with business catastrophe with their business deaungs catastrophe with their business dealings far. Catastrophe with their business dealings far. So theyre dealings thus far. So theyre thinking going to the executive side of show business is where you make money. If you you can make great money. If you find a success. And right now, finding a resonates finding a ipp that resonates with people. Of twilight, with people. Think of twilight, think hunger games. Theyve think of hunger games. Theyve bought carly bought the rights to carly fortunes. At the lake. Fortunes. Meet me at the lake. It a york times best it was a
New York Times best selling book. It was published in may. Shes happy to be partnered with them and theyre probably look at probably going to look at someone obamas who someone like the obamas who theyve their to an theyve found their way to an oscar as well as oscar already, as well as another oscar nominated thing. First with american factory, then camp, both with then crip camp, both with netflix. Theyre also with netflix. Theyre also with netflix. Theyre also with netflix. Theyre also with netflix. Theyre hoping they can stay behind the scenes, make the kind of money that everyones jealous of and lend their platform to promote. Platform to promote. Shrewd move. Is that what you think, and who needs think, judy, to and who needs spotify when can be in spotify when you can be in charge of everything yourself . Thank indeed. My pleasure. French Maritime authorities have confirmed one migrant has died and five others are in a serious condition after their small boat got into difficulties in the channel this morning. Dover lifeboat and several french vessels have been involved in the operation about five miles off the french coast. Eight off the french coast. Eight ambulances greeted the lifeboat carrying the casualties at dover harbour to treat a number of people on stretchers. Is the people on stretchers. Is the home office will chair an emergency meeting of the small boats operation gold command this morning. Boats operation gold command this morning. Now boats operation gold command this morning. Now joining us is gb news home and security editor mark white. Good morning, mark. Now, this is a rapidly developing story. What can you developing story. What can you tell us . Well , a very tell us . Well, a very serious and significant incident that is unfolding in the channel this morning and as we speak, there are still search and rescue operations ,
Missions Underway operations,
Missions Underway around the area where this small boat got into difficulty looking for any others who may still be missing, unaccounted for. We know that 54 people, according to french authorities, were pulled from the water. Now they were taken to dover harbour. Our our fixer, our producer in kent got these exclusive images of those us lifeboats and ambulance personnel taking casualties off of the lifeboats. Several of them in a stretcher. The latest we are getting from
French Maritime authorities is that five people are in a serious condition in hospital. One of condition in hospital. One of those who was pulled from the water subsequent shaun bailey died. It is a very busy day in the channel as we speak. Were getting reports of more incidents involving small boats. One incident involving two lifeboats and a
Border Force Vessel out in the channel at the moment , vessel out in the channel at the moment, about vessel out in the channel at the moment , about 350, we believe so moment, about 350, we believe so far is the number of migrants whove come across the channel this morning. And small boats. And thats astonishing because actually conditions out in the channel are pretty atrocious. Channel are pretty atrocious. The winds have been gusting at about 20 miles an hour. The waves are pretty much impossible for these small boats. But still, the criminal gangs have pushed them out into the
English Channel and its led to these very chaotic scenes. The home office and the home secretary indeed, is going to chair a meeting in the coming minutes with the small boats operational gold command as they contain due to coordinate what are a number of incidents in the channel this morning . Morning . Thats our
Homeland Security edhon thats our
Homeland Security editor, mark white there. Thank you very much, mark. With more boats on the way, well keep you up to date here on gb news. On to other stories and immigration officials have arrested seven people in

Somerset Police say she threatened a member of staff with a weapon while on escorted leave searches are now being carried out in the wellington area with helicopters and a specialist dog handler. Maui county have confirmed that up to 80 people have died and hundreds more are reported missing due to the wildfires engulfing the hawaiian island. Fresh evacuations are underway as flames forge towards the town of kaanapali. Residents from nearby islands have loaded recreational boats and jet skis to bring suppues boats and jet skis to bring supplies to those in emerging shelters. Hawaiis attorney general has announced that a comprehensive review into how authorities responded to the wildfires will take place as questions mount over whether residents were warned quickly enough. Residents were warned quickly enough. And england captain enough. And england captain harry kane has signed with bayern munich. He completed his bayern munich. He completed his £100 million move from tottenham after travelling to germany for after travelling to germany for a medical last night. The deal, which lasted till 2027, will see harry kane wear the number nine shirt post on social media. The 30 year old said he was sad to be leaving the club that hed spent nearly 20 years of his life at. Harry redknapp is a former tottenham manager. He says he was surprised by the move. Yeah i was shocked. I mean, im sure alan shearer had a party last night. It had been celebrating that harry had gone, but um , listen , im not gone, but um, listen, im not underestimating bayern munich. Underestimating bayern munich. Theyre a fantastic
Football Club and a team that will be challenging. Now theyve got challenging. Now theyve got harry kane for the
Champions League. Even stronger this year. Theyre a team that could win the
Champions League. Next year theyll man city all theyll be pushing man city all theyll be pushing man city all the. So know, it is a the way. So you know, it is a big club, but i didnt see germany on the agenda. Harry theyre speaking to esther and phil earlier on. All right. This is gb news across the uk on tv in your car, on
Digital Radio and on your
Smart Speaker saying play gb news. Speaker by saying play gb news. Now lets get back esther and now lets get back to esther and phil. Thanks very much, ray. Phil. Thanks very much, ray. Now all the migrants housed on the bibby stockholm barge in dorset have reportedly been removed after traces of legionella bacteria were found in the water system. The home office says no one has fallen ill and the evacuated action was only a precautionary measure. Residents say they were measure. Residents say they were told they will be moved back to the barge after a week. Well, the barge after a week. Well, joining us now is norman baker, former liberal democrat minister. So norman, weve got 100,000 people now having come in illegally since 2018. Were seeing some of those tragic stories , stories now unfolding stories, stories now unfolding about people who take this dangerous journey. What what would the liberal democrats do to stop this illegal migration . People coming over from calais in dinghies . Well im not here to speak for the lib dems, otherwise. The lib dem minister, as you rightly say, esther, but im not here to speak for them. I mean, my view is that the most important thing is to process applications quickly for people who arrive irregularly. Its not illegal, by the way , to arrive. Illegal, by the way, to arrive. Its only illegal if you then fail to leave when youve been declared not to have a valid case for being here. The home office is really slow at processing people. Theres a huge backlog that needs to be rectified and if that were rectified, then that would solve much of the problems. I also much of the problems. I also believe this is a personal view that when people are waiting to be processed, we ought to be considering whether they can be employed. And id rather see employed. And id rather see people employed and giving something to the country here, paying something to the country here, paying taxes. And rather paying their taxes. And rather than being a drain on the taxpayer, its also a matter of dignity for them to be able to go to work. And i dont understand why successive governments have not allowed that occur. I governments have not allowed that occur. I also have governments have not allowed that occur. I also have to that to occur. I also have to say theres not a very popular view, perhaps on gb news that the situation has been made worse by brexit because when we were in the eu we had an arrangement with 24 other countries to return countries to be able to return people to their own country. Is that lapsed . When we left the eu, we also had an agreement called the belfast agreement to be return people to be able to return people to other eu countries. Thats also lapsed. So the government in a sense has scored an own goal both week of its both this week in terms of its incompetence. Tory mps have called it carry on up the channel. Noticed tim lawtons channel. I noticed tim lawtons called it a farce, but more widely the policy is in freefall with no clear answers. And with no clear answers. And rwandas not an answer, by the way, because of way, because the number of people who are rwanda will accept less than surviving accept it is less than surviving every country. Every day in this country. Theres quite a bit to well, theres quite a bit to unpick there, norman. I mean, i think the government have now made it illegal to cross over the channel. The illegal migration bill now states that that an illegal of that is an illegal way of getting into the country and that is an illegal way of gettitheyito the country and that is an illegal way of gettithey should ountry and that is an illegal way of gettithey should therefore|d that is an illegal way of gettithey should therefore not that they should therefore not have asylum application have their asylum application even theyve even processed if theyve arrived that way. I even processed if theyve arrived that way. I mean, arrived in that way. I mean, yes, there was an arrangement with the eu, but it was hardly ever used. I think itd be fair to say hardly anybody was returned. It was, it was there, but it was never actually used. Can i just ask you about the barges . Do you think that its an place for asylum an appropriate place for
Asylum Seekers and seekers to be processed and housed while their applications are being processed on a on a barge . Or do you have a fundamental objection to that . Fundamental objection to that . No, i. Dont no, i. Dont well, first of all, i think its regrettable. We got so many people who have to be housed, and thats because processing is not being quick enough. But theres nothing intrinsically not being quick enough. But thereswithiing intrinsically not being quick enough. But thereswith a|g intrinsically not being quick enough. But thereswith a barge. |sically not being quick enough. But thereswith a barge. Whats wrong with a barge. Whats wrong, i think, is the fact that it was not prepared properly because the legionnaires bacteria to arrive, as i understand it, because waters been lying in pipes for considerable time. And its a very simple thing to flush the pipes out in advance of people arriving. And this situation wouldnt have occurred. So thats clearly an avoidable problem weve got here. But no, i dont think anyone with barges per se. I mean, we expect accommodation to be satisfactory in terms of human responsibilities and i dont see it any worse being in a barge and being in a pretty useless hotel. And some of the hotels that migrants and indeed others, including our own people on social put up in, are
Social Security put up in, are pretty shabby. And theres a lot of people making a great deal of money very accommodation. Baker, thank you very norman baker, thank you very much for joining this much indeed for joining us this morning. We much appreciate morning. We very much appreciate your. And weve got back in your time. And weve got back in the studio simon danchuk and alex dean to go through the stories week. But i think stories of the week. But i think thats going to be a big question, isnt it, alex . Did legionnaires how did legionnaires legionella bacteria end up on that barge . What was going on . Norman was alluding to the fact that the pipes hadnt been cleaned, had been sitting stagnant. Exactly. Its very basic. Legionella doesnt survive if water is properly hot or properly cold. Its the in between and its just been water has been left in there in a tank or in the pipes for some time. But you know,
Public Service broadcasting, as we are one, its not contagious. So if ive its not contagious. So if ive been exposed to legionella, i cant it doesnt bounce person to person. You cant get from to person. You cant get it from me. And most people exposed me. And to most people exposed to legionella dont get at to legionella dont get ill at all. Right . This is not the all. Right . So this is not the most of things. Of most serious of things. Of course it can have very bad outcomes clear outcomes and you need to clear it its easy to identify it up. But its easy to identify why its easy treat and its why its easy to treat and its very to keep very inexpensive to keep out. Its just unhygienic, its just been unhygienic, poorly little poorly maintained for a little while now. Poorly maintained for a little whisimon. Poorly maintained for a little whisimon i, william , one of our simon i, william, one of our viewers here, says as a supporter of the conservative party, i to say that if party, i have to say that if labour mps express same good labour mps express the same good sense simon danchuk, the sense as simon danchuk, the prospect government prospect of a
Labour Government might quite so daunting. Might not be quite so daunting. So theyve got to fund therein. William wanted to ask william i just wanted to ask you, heard in news there you, we heard in the news there from this terrible from ray that this terrible incident thats happened today across the channel was happened five miles from the french coast. I think ray said in the news, the bit im struggling to understand is if that happened five from french five miles from the french coast, have been coast, why have they been brought dover why have brought to dover and why have they sent back they not been sent back to france . Whats your. They not been sent back to fra| i e . Whats your. They not been sent back to fra|i thinkiats your. They not been sent back to fra|i think its. Your. They not been sent back to fra|i think its a our. They not been sent back to fra|i think its a really good i think its a really good question. It should have been the french that rescuing the french that was rescuing these people. They were to these people. They were close to these people. They were close to the coast. But these people. They were close to the coast. But this isnt the french coast. But this isnt the french coast. But this isnt the first time that britain has been and bringing been intervening and bringing people from the french coast into the uk. I just dont know what were doing here. Its as though were facilitating illegal immigration into the country. Its not like we didnt give france enough to money either look after them or do what they should be doing anyway. Exactly right. If anyone can answer that question as to why they were brought to dover and not returned to france, please email in have you on the in and well have you on the
Panel Next Week because id love to the answer to that to know the answer to that particular simon particular question. Simon whats your story . Whats your whats your story . In the oh, big story. In the i newspaper , chinese and russian newspaper, chinese and
Russian Hackers break into uk
Foreign Office. And this is the fact office. And this is the fact that some malware has been downloaded into the
Foreign Office in 2021. And so the chinese and the
Russian Air Forces have been able to see whats going on in the
Foreign Office. You couldnt make it up , i have to say. Now, that is a big a big issue. When i was secretary of state of dwp, we were always concerned of people hacking into the system to take all the money, which is 200 billion as it was a year at the time. So its not just watching what youre doing, its potential stealing of money. Issue stealing of money. Big issue that we would definitely be looking at going back to 2010, but we dont see many further advanced and i dont think our technology is ever going to be perfect. Right. People are always trying invent systems and trying to invent new systems and methods breaking into things, methods of breaking into things, not always for money, actually, not always for money, actually, not for gain, sometimes not always for gain, sometimes for pure vandalism. For pure online vandalism. People able to say people like to be able to say that theyve done something that theyve that theyve theyre the people that broke that runs the broke the system that runs the that of the but youre that bit of the uk. But youre right going back some way american organisations had what they euphemistically called visiting dignitary protocols which meant when you get the delegation coming round from beijing , you delegation coming round from beijing, you dont let them anywhere near computer anywhere near a computer to stick call a thumb stick what they call a thumb drive. Usb stick in drive. We call a usb stick in because theyll be trying to hack the system. And this has been us for time. Been with us for some time. Went on when i went on a parliamentary delegation to china and i think about 2008, we all in our phones at all had to hand in our phones at the
Embassy Reception the
British Embassy at reception in beijing because the they told us the chinese sort of us that the chinese sort of hacked the phone calls by using them and. Yeah. Or you could bring something back. But whats your story . Story . I chose one from the telegraph front of the telegraph, the telegraph, a story about the government potentially rowing back requirements on the back on the requirements on the other back on the other side, rowing back on the requirements for stripping out our boilers and putting in heat pumps. It seems to me that even if the specifics are not right , if the specifics are not right, the direction of travel, which is to say theres an attitude, theres a desire to slow down on some of these targets, to say that we shouldnt be flaying ourselves mercilessly for net zero whilst our neighbours start pushing away their targets. I think thats got to be right. And i think that the two things that governments quite likely to look the next look at before the next election, medium election, so not in the medium term, really quite soon. The term, but really quite soon. The first is the commitment to try and cant have and say we cant have combustible in cars combustible engines in cars anymore i just dont anymore by 2030. I just dont see that lasting when the germans and the french arent going it anymore. Going to do it anymore. Why should sticking to that, should we be sticking to that, that and the second should we be sticking to that, that so and the second should we be sticking to that, that so many and the second should we be sticking to that, that so many conservative ond should we be sticking to that, that so many conservative voters one . So many conservative voters in areas being told in rural areas are being told theyre going to have to pay extraordinary money extraordinary amounts of money to their boilers , which to pull out their boilers, which are serviceable and are perfectly serviceable and working well, and install heat pumps, dont work pumps, which often dont work when its too cold. Yeah instead, i i think were instead, i just i think were going to have to adopt a more pragmatic position on it, not going to have to adopt a more pragbecause sition on it, not going to have to adopt a more pragbecause itslii on it, not going to have to adopt a more pragbecause its right it, not going to have to adopt a more pragbecause its right and ot going to have to adopt a more pragbecause its right and two one because its right and two because its electorally rewarding. View, simon, whats your view, simon, about this . I mean, it about about this . I mean, is it is it popular . I mean, ive always popular always told that it was popular to policy to get to net to the policy to get to net zero. And of course, people say, well, if you want well, you know, if you want other countries to do something, youve got take the lead. Youve got to take the lead. And the took of the the uk took advantage of the
Industrial Revolution for so many now its to many years and now its got to its got set the set the its got to set the set the agenda on getting to net zero. No, i think people of no, i think the people of uxbndge no, i think the people of uxbridge in the by election did everybody a great favour by voting the way that they did and they put a marker down to say that ulez as an example of green taxes should be restricted. And i think thats the general feeling in the country. Were approaching this far too quickly and draconian measures just do not work and wont be. And when youre talking about it in the abstract, alls well and good in the westminster bubble. But when two years bubble. But when its two years away, away, and away, three years away, and people having to for it people are having to pay for it and cannot and itll cost and say we cannot and itll cost £1 trillion totality, weve £1 trillion in totality, weve said have you got . Phil said no. What have you got . Phil now, page 24 of the sun today. This is a good i bet youve heard some excuses in your time about trains delayed. About why the trains delayed. Weve kind weve had the wrong kind of snow, havent we . Weve had leaves, leaves on the line all this stuff. Bet youve this kind of stuff. I bet youve never heard this before. Never heard this one before. And i would like to hear i would very much like to hear peoples excuse theyve peoples best excuse theyve ever for a train being ever heard for a train being delayed. But still, youll be going this a going some to beat this one. A train delayed by 30 minutes train was delayed by 30 minutes when caught when the driver caught his ticket having in ticket inspector having sex in his cab and he refused to start his cab and he refused to start his journey. Claimed that his journey. He claimed that the pair the control pair had soiled the control panel didnt want to touch panel and didnt want to touch it. And refused to let the train leave had a deep, leave until it had had a deep, clean only philip could find this story in a newspaper. Alex, can you control yourself for the ticket . Yourself for the ticket . The driver apparently is in the clear, but the ticket inspector is facing disciplinary action over the incident. Action over the incident. This alex is cracked up here. He doesnt know what to say. Or is this an excuse not to answer the question . I just think this is why love is the driver getting the hump. Is the driver getting the hump. Im not driving this train now. Im not driving this train now. I think youre right. I think youve got the right word. The honk. Ive got to say, i think it was the ticket inspector. Getting the hump for the driver was. I have to say, im shocked. I have to say, im shocked. Simon well, yeah , no, simon well, yeah, no, absolutely devoid of a saturday here, isnt it . Absolutely. Absolutely. What line was it . Thats what i want to know. You dont get a sex line. I think you dont even get this in first class or standard premium on the coast. On the west coast. Levante . Levante . Yeah. Apparently in yeah. Apparently this was in spain from to barcelona i so if youre, if youre if youre fancy a see if you have a repeat. Yeah then there you go. Thats the place. Thats the place to go. There you go. They all happens on gb news. You know, standards are usually this high. Phil, you usually this high. But phil, you always manage to bring them down. I, for one, welcome it. I, for one, welcome it. I like alex. I like alex. Never had such a laugh. So that was the story. Train delayed cars , the who was having sex. Sex. It was the ticket inspector. It was the ticket inspector. Ticket inspectors inspecting something. But he was could have got away with not showing the tickets, couldnt you . You could have got a free train fare. You have to be very thorough in those inspection anyway , alex in those inspection anyway, alex simon, thank you very much as eve r. Even i even i should also say kate contacted me now from our first hour to say, philip, please do not use the term dead cat bounce. It is really offensive to what cats . Well, i presume it must be two cats. How many complaints do you get, kate . I wasnt aware it was an offensive term. I thought it was a well used term. It is. But if any cats were offended by that, then to them and to then i apologise to them and to you well. Kate anyway, coming you as well. Kate anyway, coming up, big pharma too big up, does big pharma have too big a and our is too quick to a say and our gp is too quick to prescribe medicines . Well prescribe medicines . Well be speaking doctor lloyd speaking to doctor david lloyd and shortly. And

Hello im solar proud sponsors of weather on. Gb news. Hello im marco petagna. Heres your latest weather update from the met office. Well see a mixed bag of weather across the uk today. A mixture of sunny spells, some showers and feeling cool in a fairly brisk south westerly breeze. Two low pressures anchored towards the and it the north west of the uk and it sees fairly tightly packed isobars, those fairly isobars, giving those fairly breezy with showers breezy conditions with showers moving the west and moving in from the west and southwest. Certainly a southwest. But certainly quite a few contend with as few showers to contend with as we through the afternoon we go through the afternoon towards the north. And west of the some of those quite the uk. Some of those quite heavy thundery, particularly heavy and thundery, particularly across northern england, scotland northern scotland and parts of

Now, after a five year study, the manufacturers of a weight loss jab have found that the drug could reduce major cardiovascular events by 20 in overweight or obese people. But are we too quick to medicate . It might help you to get thin, but is it the right way to go forward as a nation . Are we, i dont know, dictated to by big pharma . Oh, and i joined by dr. David lloyd and hollyoaks star author and wellbeing guru
Davinia Taylor. Thank you both for joining us. David, if we can if we can start with you, whats your view . A gps too quick to just hand out some pills and tablets to people instead of telling people they need to change their lifestyle . I think change their lifestyle . I think the answer to that is yes and no i i i hate to say this. Im on the fence here because theres no doubt at all that the new wonder drugs, ozempic and wegovy are amazingly successful at getting people to lose weight. Getting people to lose weight. They lose weight quickly. They lose weight efficiently. And if lose weight efficiently. And if you look at the cost that obesity and the side effects of obesity and the side effects of obesity like diabetes , although obesity like diabetes, although diabetes is not necessarily totally linked to obesity, but those two conditions amount to a huge amount of disease in this country. And so if we could get country. And so if we could get the weight of the country down, so to speak, we would save money in the end. So, yes, i agree with you, lifestyle is great, but it is jolly difficult to lose the weight sometimes if you are very, very, very overweight. And so gastric bypasses and ozempic are one of the ways that you can go forward. And as it is as good as a bypass. So, you know , people are concerned know, people are concerned though weve got are actually making a difference. People are concerned, though , with the overmedication. So , with the overmedication. So whether thats statins that people would be on forever if it is this weight loss people talk about, actually youre going to be on those weight loss injections forever because when you come you put the weight you come off, you put the weight back on. But davinia, how about you . Do you think . Is this you . What do you think . Is this just sort of treat thing some of the side effects but not actually going to the real cause of why maybe youre overweight . Of why maybe youre overweight . Yeah, because for me, i lost four stone in a few months by getting ahead of the craving for what i think is a bigger than the pandemic, really. Its an addiction to refined carbohydrates and im not just talking about sugar. Im talking about bread. Its highly , highly about bread. Its highly, highly addictive. And once you start, you cant stop. So what i did, i replaced my normal sort of like eating habits, like granola and whole grain bread. I replaced that with fat and protein in the morning and i started shredding the weight because i wasnt spiking my insulin all the time, causing cravings. David mellor causing cravings. David mellor were just looking at a picture of you i could hardly recognise i denies that picture on on the left as it were. You sort of double the size of you dont mind me saying of you now. Yeah. Well, im completely inflamed there. It wasnt just fat, it was water, air and the fact i was water, air and the fact i was constantly feeding myself, i didnt active. Wait, what didnt active. Wait, what ozempic does it activates the glp one receptor which regulates your insulin and it also moderates your appetite. I wasnt doing that naturally. I mean, you can do it with things like herb called berberine. You like herb called berberine. You can do it with an oil called mct oil, which creates ketones in the body and it gets into your brain and it stops you seeking glucose as an energy fuel. Youre actually burning fat. So just a quick answer to binnya. Would you have taken these as jabs . Would you have gone for medication over willpower . Id medication over willpower . Id have done anything. I so depressed, not i was so depressed, not because i was overweight , because i was overweight, because i was overweight, because i was overweight, because i didnt feel like i was overweight, up overweight, because it crept up so was deemed normal so slowly. I was deemed normal in british society. I was just so and constant hungry. So so tired and constant hungry. So david, are we taking our big pharma , taking advantage of pharma, taking advantage of people here . Davinia would have taken anything and our big pharma and gps too quick to prescribe, taking advantage of the fact that they would take anything rather than looking at the lifestyle just to correct you their gps cant prescribe semaglutide to people with just a weight problem. We can give it to diabetics. We can give it to diabetics. The only people in the nhs that can prescribe ozempic are the obesity clinics. So the weight loss clinics are at the hospital. So im afraid, no, were not too quick to prescribe these drugs because we cant. But i drugs because we cant. But i think you can you can level enormous criticism at big pharma for lots of
Different Things. For lots of
Different Things. The fact that they spend an awful lot of research researching two drugs so researching me, two drugs so they can catch in cash in on drugs that people do live forever. And youre absolutely right. Bit, you can right. In your last bit, you can only take semaglutide for two years. Under the present rules. But on other hand, youve but on the other hand, youve got to look at the amazing advances that theyve made. And advances that theyve made. And you mentioned statins, but you again mentioned statins, but if to give a statin to if we were to give a statin to every male over the age of 55in this country, we would extend the
Life Expectancy of them by several years. So davinia wants to come in there. Its been a huge exaggeration over the usefulness of statins. Its like
Something Like 5. Its only beneficial. And in fact, only beneficial. And in fact, the
American Heart Association said that cholesterol dietary cholesterol is no longer a molecule of concern for overconsumption without cholesterol, i get depressed. Cholesterol, i get depressed. Its a hormone transporter. I its a hormone transporter. I mean, i literally have a high cholesterol diet and i run marathons. I mean, come on. When i was on a low cholesterol diet, i was on a low cholesterol diet, i couldnt get out of bed. The cholesterol was not an important cause of heart disease, but anyway, look, this is a debate that the country is having. Thank you very much for joining today. Is. Thank you very much for joining today. Is. Are we joining us today. It is. Civil Service, lots of views about the
Civil Service. Debbie says, i agree. For the first time with amy, we as
Civil Servants earn a poor wage outside london. Grades are outside london. Our grades are under £23,000. In fact, and theres been no extra staff where in for where we are in kent for the last years. Last 12 years. Michael says. In contrast, i have first hand knowledge of this are the laziest this blob. They are the laziest part the countrys workforce part of the countrys workforce and if it was ever exposed, what they would waves. They did it would cause waves. You waves with your you were causing waves with your story about the train and the sex that was going on on the train. Yes. And indeed, it was. I did actually give you a challenge to say, have you got a better reason for your train being delayed than that one in spain . And actually, i think fiona might be shes shes certainly given it a go. So she said your sex on the train story made commuted to made me laugh. I commuted to london few and my london for a few years and my best delays due to a best delays were due to a dancing man on the line dancing naked man on the line and could have been that ticket inspector. Could be the same person and a on the line. A llama on the line. I think you had so, fiona, i think you had some good ones there. Dont be alarmed. Yeah and the weight loss story weve just done big pharma giving done about big pharma giving tablets everybody, seems. Tablets to everybody, it seems. And right, kathy here and is this right, kathy here says, daughter, type says, my daughter, who is type 2 diabetes, get ozempic diabetes, cant get her ozempic drugs and thats because they are all being used for weight loss. So somebody in need is going to people for the weight loss. Theyre anyway. Keep those views coming in. We love reading them anyway. In the early hours of the 8th of august, 1963, a gang of 15 men committed the most unique and audacious robbery britain had ever seen, holding up the glasgow to houston mail train. Glasgow to houston mail train. The gang got away with £2. 6 million, equivalent to about £45 million, equivalent to about £45 million in todays money, the robbery and subsequent investigation captured the imagination of the british public, and interest remains high. Well, joining us now is
Chris Pickard , author of ronnie biggs pickard, author of ronnie biggs autobiography. And, chris, autobiography. And, chris, thanks ever so much for joining us. And the book. So the first thing that astonished me was that they didnt realise how much money was on that train. Is thatis much money was on that train. Is that is that true . Its true, yeah. I mean, because as the man behind it,
Bruce Reynolds, he went from crime to he was the crime to crime. He was the prince of thieves. So hed get lots of tip offs about jobs to do. And until he did them, hed have no idea how much he would actually get. He was the brains behind. He was the brains behind. He was the brains behind. He was the brains. Bruce and when train when they tried another train robbery had gone wrong, robbery which had gone wrong, they up with about £700, they ended up with about £700, taking exactly same as taking exactly the same risks as they the great train robbery. And how did it go wrong . How did wrong . Well, that one did it go wrong . Well, that one was they passengers on board. They thought the way you stop a you pull the cord and a train is you pull the cord and it stops it stopped beyond it stops and it stopped beyond where had a van. So they where they had a van. So they then tried to carry the money. It was a absolute farce. It was keystone was keystone cops, and then it was very cleverly read, done. They worked you didnt stop worked out. You didnt stop a passenger train. Stopped the passenger train. You stopped the mail had all the passenger train. You stopped the mail on had all the passenger train. You stopped the mail on it. Had all the money on it. And we talk about the brains behind and a lot of work that behind it and a lot of work that went into it. It seems here. There been lot of trial there have been a lot of trial and rather than brains and error rather than brains behind yeah its behind it. Yeah i mean, its trial and error. I mean, gang, the i mean, bruces gang, the biggest one theyve done before that they did airport that was they did london airport and boac, the and they stole boac, the equivalent
British Airways equivalent of
British Airways payroll. A very payroll. That was a very dramatic november dramatic crime in november 62nd. And heard about all and when they heard about all this money travelling with no guards, mean, there were 80 guards, i mean, there were 80 people on train, but they people on the train, but they were office sorters. Were all post office sorters. And so all and people like that. So all this it was daily. It this and it was daily. It happened day. Had happened every day. We had trains the mail went from trains going, the mail went from london to glasgow then the london to glasgow and then the one came glasgow to london. So every with every night that train went with different but different sums of money, but they had the tip off after an august bank holiday that they august bank holiday that if they stopped have a lot stopped it, it would have a lot more but bruce admits, more money. But bruce admits, as they number of bags they saw the number of bags coming he just thought, coming out, he just thought, were trouble were in trouble now. You were still why do you think were still so fascinated by it . I mean, do you think that even though were all crime and everything all against crime and everything that have kind of that people have some kind of admiration for what they did . Yeah, it was seen as a bit of a cheeky crime. It also probably i mean, it was also probably i mean, its to say its terrible to say a gentlemans crime, but was gentlemans crime, but it was the last there were guns the last there were no guns involved. Were knives. Involved. There were no knives. It of glamour to it. It had a bit of glamour to it. And this was 63 was the start of the swinging, swinging 60s. That was is the year beatlemania. Was is the year of beatlemania. It rolling it was the year the
Rolling Stones launched first stones launched their first single. Country was single. So the country was changing. And on saturdays, a lot of kids and people went and saw at the cinemas. So saw westerns at the cinemas. So the fact we had our own great train robbery, it just caught in those grey days of the early 60s. It was a movie that was happening live and it was, it was. And the funny thing was, were they movie stars to them . Yes. They became it because they because the fact that they because of the fact that some of them were on the run, including bruce and buster edwards, caught including bruce and buster edwards, later. Caught including bruce and buster edwards, later. They caught including bruce and buster edwards, later. They were ght till much later. They were always the news. There was always in the news. There was always in the news. There was always something so always something happening. So when started in 64, always something happening. So whernine started in 64, always something happening. So whernine of started in 64, always something happening. So whernine of the arted in 64, always something happening. So whernine of the 16 ed in 64, always something happening. So whernine of the 16 at in 64, always something happening. So whernine of the 16 at the i4, always something happening. So whernine of the 16 at the track only nine of the 16 at the track were actually in the court. The government at the time was trying to pretend theyd got everybody, were everybody, but the public were too they knew of too smart. They already knew of this reynolds and this this
Bruce Reynolds and this buster they buster edwards. And they well, theyre there. Buster edwards. And they well, the how there. Buster edwards. And they well, the how did here. Buster edwards. And they well, the how did ronnie biggs escape how did ronnie biggs escape and with it for so and get away with it for so long . Well, ron, ron was captured initially odd man initially and he was the odd man out two gangs did out because two gangs did the great train robbery. And he was there because he knew bruce. And i wont with the i wont bore you with the reasons for that. Then reasons for that. But he then got he captured, did 30 got he was captured, did 30 years prison and was years in prison and was sentenced to 30 years and was put wandsworth and all the put in wandsworth and all the prisoners thought prisoners there thought it was an outrage because at an outrage because murderers at the getting ten years. The time were getting ten years. So were so everybody in the prisons were going, to escape. Going, youve got to escape. Its not fair. And interestingly, in 60s, ron would tell wasnt a question of tell me it wasnt a question of if escape just if you could escape just when and he over the wall and when he went over the wall at rope ladderjust at wandsworth rope ladderjust as you see in the movies, they managed to removal truck managed to park a removal truck next the wall of wandsworth next to the wall of wandsworth and throw a rope ladder over and ron over the wall. They ron went over the wall. They discovered was no alarm discovered there was no alarm from police, from wandsworth to the police, the had to the wandsworth prison had to dial 999 to say theyd lost ron well, look, youre going to have to read that. When you say my and when you say my autobiography, i hope people will will buy it. Will will will buy it. Its a fantastic story. And its a fantastic story. And chris, thank you very much for coming in and sharing it with us today. Absolute pleasure. Absolute pleasure. And when you talk about audacious, just to throw a ladder over a wall, i mean, the whole thing absolutely was. I can see why the country was gnpped can see why the country was gripped and im gripped with this. Well start with this and theyre off. Yes. This is the funniest footage ive seen of holidaymakers is racing to get the sunbed at a resort in tenerife. And i guess one thing, tenerife. And i guess one thing, none of us are immune from doing. Look at them. Just legging it round there. Its as if theyve come straight out of the breakfast buffet room. A whistles gone, and its like an olympic sport. Olympic sport. But each year the sunbed wars break out at resorts where the demand for loungers outstrips the supply. Demand for loungers outstrips the supply. In a to stop the supply. In a bid to stop night time guerrilla tactics, some will now remove any some hotels will now remove any towels on deckchairs towels placed on deckchairs before a certain time, and that obviously was the time that they all got running there. But joining us now is behavioural psychologist jo hemmings. I dont know if you hemmings. Jo i dont know if you get much pleasure from get as much pleasure as me from watching that , id it is watching that, id think it is fantastic. Its like a monty fantastic. Its like a monty python sketch i think youre watching. Its a benny hill music. Yeah its a benny hill music. Yeah and what im saying is, are any of us immune . I mean, if youre there on holiday and you think, oh my goodness, theyre going lounger , im going to get the lounger, im going to get the lounger, im going get the lounger, do we going to get the lounger, do we all follow suit and start running with our towels . I think we do. And i think actually seeing footage like this, which looks like up, like its all speeded up, i dont think it is. Its the scarcity value. So the minute you see
Something Like this, you think, gosh, you know, we have a different attitude to things that so are that are abundant. So there are lots chairs everybody. It lots of chairs for everybody. It would all be fine, but there arent. And basically are arent. And basically there are not enough for the people not enough chairs for the people staying the hotel. Were staying in the hotel. Were creatures if youve creatures of habit. If youve got you want be at the got kids, you want to be at the front the pool to an eye front of the pool to keep an eye on and if the only way on them. And if the only way youre to guarantee that youre going to guarantee that on houdayis youre going to guarantee that on holiday is a on your precious holiday is a bus through when the gates are open, probably the same open, probably for the same chairs want every chairs that you you want every day. Is the net effect of day. This is the net effect of it. I would say to people before you book a holiday check to see if a sun lounger for if theres a sun lounger for everybody or every room. Everybody or every room. Otherwise, up disappointed. Otherwise, up disappointed. And it is about location , and it is about location, isnt it . Location, location , isnt it . Location, location, location. You want to be in the sun, you want to be by the pool. You want to be by the sea. But is this selfish . Will they remain on those beds throughout or they just holding them . Because ive seen that, you know, beds hours and hours know, beds for hours and hours left, i. E. Its too hot or whatever. Theyre doing other things and yet theyve bagged the bed for hours. The bed for hours. I know theres a lot of debate about the protocol of this , and ive also heard about this, and ive also heard about people i think youre going for lunch and you leave it for an houn lunch and you leave it for an hour. Its fine if you plonk it down in the morning at whatever time, then you go out for the day. Youre not intending to use it 4 00 and someone it till 4 00 and then someone grabs towels. And ive grabs your towels. And ive heard chucking in the heard people chucking in the pool or just moving them, you know, of get it. If you know, you kind of get it. If you desperately want a sunbed and youre sitting youre seeing youre sitting somewhere back looking somewhere at the back looking at a or 3 or 4 sunbeds in the a pair or 3 or 4 sunbeds in the sun, for hours and on and sun, unused for hours and on and on your precious holiday where youre entitled to that chair as well. I see why, but my gosh well. I can see why, but my gosh , its one packed beach, so i just wondered, is there some is there something in the psychology of following the crowd that sometimes you dont even know why youre doing it, but everyone else is doing it, so you think you should doing so you think you should be doing it i mean, sometimes see i mean, sometimes you see crowds dont at crowds gather. Dont you, at places everyone starts places and everyone starts gathering got no gathering till theyve got no idea theyre gathering. Is idea why theyre gathering. Is there in the there something in the psychology of just following the crowd, dont crowd, even though you dont really youre doing it . Really know why youre doing it . So. I think its i think so. And i think its also about scarcity reminded me also about scarcity reminded me a sounds a bit a bit, although it sounds a bit of an odd analogy. I know that dunng of an odd analogy. I know that during pandemic everyone during the pandemic everyone went loo rolls. Went out and bought loo rolls. There no scarcity of loo there was no scarcity of loo rolls, but for some reason we thought there would so thought there would be so everyone suddenly theres no everyone so suddenly theres no new everyones everyone so suddenly theres no new them everyones everyone so suddenly theres no new them and everyones everyone so suddenly theres no new them and itsaryones everyone so suddenly theres no new them and its a ones everyone so suddenly theres no new them and its a bitas everyone so suddenly theres no new them and its a bit like buying them and its a bit like that. You see somebody do it and you think, oh, they must know more than i do. Im going to copy what they do. Yeah, very much so. We of its a bit much so. We sort of its a bit like follow the leader, but were not necessarily conscious. Were doing it. Thank you so jo hemmings, thank you so much joining us this much for joining us this morning. Im glad theres an explanation or an excuse. So explanation or an excuse. So next time im legging it with my towel, ill say i cant help myself. Myself. Richard here says, who would go on holiday where you have to enter the towel . Olympics every morning before breakfast . I think thats a fair point, richard. It part of the holiday but is it part of the holiday fun now knowing that youve got to geared up . To be all geared up . Not idea of fun, its not my idea of fun, helen says. Probably send me down with the towels do it. The towels to do it. Helen says, guys, my helen says, hey, guys, my husband were on husband and i were on an egyptian nile cruise a dock egyptian nile cruise and a dock for the excursion for one of the excursion options. I wanted to sunbathe on the deck. Unfortunately german options. I wanted to sunbathe on the de had nfortunately german options. I wanted to sunbathe on the de had claimedtely german options. I wanted to sunbathe on the de had claimed the german options. I wanted to sunbathe on the de had claimed the frontman options. I wanted to sunbathe on the de had claimed the front row couple had claimed the front row beds people. They then beds for five people. They then went excursion, which went on the excursion, which started and finished started at 8 am. And finished at my husband threw their at one. My husband threw their towels into the nile and told me towels into the nile and told me to down. Now theres to lie down. Now theres a confession half. Helen but confession and a half. Helen but thanks confiding in us and thanks for confiding in us and all the gb news viewers. All of the gb news viewers. Busy of sport. We a busy weekend of sport. We covered lot of football covered a lot of the football with with with
Harry Redknapp earlier just about the earlier. I just wonder about the other thats going other sport thats going on. Weve the rugby, rugby weve got the rugby, rugby league, rugby union,
Anthony Joshua fight. Whats your sort of pick of whats going on . Well,
Anthony Joshua, its a statement fight tonight. He certainly a statement win certainly needs a statement win because not fault that because its not his fault that his opponent, dillian whyte, produced analytical produced an adverse analytical finding which in laymans finding, which is, in laymans terms, a voluntary drug terms, failed a voluntary drug test. Had to find an test. Theyve had to find an opponent, robert helenius, at very short notice to keep the show going. Theres a massive undercard at the o2 show going. Theres a massive undercard at the 02 this evening, so couldnt just evening, so they couldnt just aboush evening, so they couldnt just abolish but abolish the whole thing. But hes win tonight properly hes got a win tonight properly because fighting guy who because hes fighting a guy who has training. Were has had minimal training. Were talking a few days talking about a few days training. Last time this happened in 2019 andy happened back in 2019 when andy ruiz stepped in at the last ruiz jr stepped in at the last minute, he floored four minute, he got floored four times he hasnt recovered times and he hasnt recovered from that since. Psychologically, dont psychologically, i dont think so. Needs to win so. Tonight he needs to win properly can look properly and then he can look ahead fighting deontay ahead to fighting deontay wilder. Who knows after that tyson its long, tyson fury. But its a long, long for
Anthony Joshua long way back for
Anthony Joshua at moment, as things stand at the moment, as things stand and i say, its his and as i say, its not his fault, the fight was was was postponed or cancelled as it were. But hes to do were. But hes got to do something tonight. Mean, something tonight. I mean, the guy hes called the guy hasnt. Hes called the norwegian or. No, the nordic nightmare. I mean, hes hes hes not a nightmare for anyone whos any good, put it that way. So he needs he needs to make a statement tonight by flooring him properly inside 4 him properly inside 3 or 4 rounds obviously, big rounds and obviously, the big football is about football news today is about harry going to bayern munich.
