Before she died in 1559, Queen Mary I of England wrote that “when I am dead and opened, you shall find Calais engraved on my heart”. I wonder how many impatient and frustrated HGV truckers will feel that Calais and Dover are engraved on their hearts as they queue up on Kent’s M20 and A2 to gain access to the Channel ports? Yesterday, they would have found large gantry notices announcing ‘French Border Closed’ as they approached the port of Dover, amidst rain and fog; they’d have turned back to park up in the designated nearby lorry parks until the sea routes (and Channel tunnel at Folkestone) were opened again.
