Volunteer fair
Francestown residents can attend a virtual volunteer fair on Thursday evening to connect to agencies in need of help. Attendees will hear from directors and volunteers from the Community Volunteer Transportation Company, Home Healthcare Hospice and Community Services, and the Grapevine Family and Community Resource Center about volunteer opportunities and the impacts the local organizations have on senior citizens’ lives.
Francestown is being prioritized right now because of a regional shortage of volunteer drivers, who assist people who are unable to drive themselves to appointments, organizer Sylvia von Aulock from the Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission said. A survey the SNHPC conducted this summer reflected a drastic drop-off in volunteer drivers. “Many of the people who volunteer are older,” von Aulock said, and either they or their families asked them to stop volunteering in order to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The need for drivers still remains, however. “When you’re looking at a rural community like Francestown, if you don’t drive there are very few options for you,” she said, “Especially if you don’t have any family or friends that drive.”
