good evening. i'm bret baier, we are releasing new fox polls about the presidential race. president biden gets his best result this election cycle in the head-to-head against former president donald trump. he leads 50-48. that is within the margin of error. president biden hasn't been ahead of former president trump in the polls since october of 2023. he trailed trump by 1 point last month. again, all within the margin of error. a very tight race. when listing extremely important issues to their vote, registered voters in this survey citing the future of democracy at 68%. the economy at 66, followed by stability and normalcy. then healthcare and immigration. abortion, and guns. this as president biden is preparing to share a stage with the former president in just over a week. the first presidential debate, which we will cover live right here on fox news channel next thursday night. senior white house correspondent jacqui heinrich starts us off tonight with a look at some of the other numbers inside our latest survey life from the north lawn. good evening, jacqui. >> jacqui: good evening, bret. we have already seen the last of president biden for a while. he is at his delaware beach house until tomorrow when he heads to camp david to huddle with advisers for debate prep. the campaign says biden will try to put trump on his heels for his, quote: attacks on democracy. new fox poll shows biden has some vulnerabilities of his own. the president's campaign is betting big concerns about the future of democracy will bring voters to the ballot box for biden. but, according to a new fox survey, he has a lot of work to do elsewhere. while biden leads on the democracy issue by 6 points. trump leads on immigration by 9. republicans slamming yesterday's executive order shielding half a million undocumented spouses from deportation as mass amnesty. >> more than half a million illegal immigrants are getting amnesty. the cartels will use that to gin even more business. enticing more people coming across the border. >> on the economy, trump has a 5 point lead. a whopping 68% of registered voters feel its condition is only fair or poor. 41% report they are falling behind in their personal finances. and biden's approval rating is deep under water on the economy, inflation, immigration and the israel hamas war. but don't expect to change in strategy. according to a new report, even biden's closest long time allies feel they can't advocate for a course correction in private meetings or else being cast out. one source telling axios, quote even for those close to the center there, this is a hesitance to raise skepticism or doubted about current path for fear of being viewed disloyal. there is not a discussion that a change of course is needed. biden is taking the next week to prepare for his debate with former president trump with the cnn debate as one potential republican vp short-lister reveals a possible counter punch to biden's prepared lines on the future of democracy. >> we're actually living under a dictatorship today where he is bypassing congress on immigration policy. bypassing congress on protecting our border. is he bypassing congress on student loan forgiveness. is he defying the supreme court. >> jacqui: while biden edges out trump in a head-to-head matchup for the first time since last august, his 2 point lead there shah rinks to just one in a five-way race. you have robert f. kennedy jr. grabbing 10% support. that is shy of the 15% needed to qualify for the debate stage making his participation next week illegal immigrants to his state. a city official confirming to fox news in the last 18 months denver has purchased about 2,000 bus and plane tickets to salt lake city and has sent immigrants to every state in the country investing they do not push them to specific locations, but to, quote: where they may have support networks or job opportunities. governor cox says his state can offer migrants neither. on x, posting utah's resources are completely depleted. his office later telling us they didn't find out about denver's plan until mid may. democrat denver mayor mike johnston's office putin and north korean leader kim jong un are pledging to provide mutual aid if either country is attacked that could mark the strongest connection between moscow and pyongyang since the end of the cold war. both leaders described it as a major upgrade of their relations covering security, trade, investment, cultural and humanitarian ties. meantime, a court in eastern russia is sentencing a visiting american soldier to three years 9 months in prison on charges of stealing and making threats of murder. officials say staff sergeant gordon black who is married flew to russia to see his girlfriend. and was arrested last month after she accused him of stealing from her. black is expected to appeal that verdict. >> bret: uincreasing tension between the biden and israel. the white house canceling tomorrow's meeting with israeli officials about iran following the claim that the u.s. is withholding military aid to israel. that claim coming from israel's prime minister bibi netanyahu. correspondent trey yingst has the latest tonight from tel aviv. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu slamming the biden administration this week claiming that the united states is halting weapons shipments needed to fight iran and other common enemies. >> it's inconceivable that in the past few months the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunition to israel. >> the video statement reportedly upset american officials who canceled a scheduled meeting between the u.s. and israel regarding iran, a source familiar confirmed to fox news. the white house denies the u.s. is blocking arms shipment and pushed back against the idea that it canceled the meeting which was supposed to be tomorrow. claiming that details were still being finalized. >> i'm not going to talk about what we said in diplomatic conversations. i can just say -- i can just say, again, that we have a commitment to make sure israel has what it needs to defend itself against a whole variety of threats. >> that commitment comes amid broader concern about growing war between israel and hezbollah that launched more rockets into northern israel in recent hours. the israeli military said in a statement tuesday that operational plans were approved by the head of its northern command to take offensive action against lebanon. hezbollah's leader spoke this afternoon about the possibility of a larger conflict. >> if the war was imposed on lebanon, the resistance will fight with no regulations, no rules, and no ceilings. >> trey: as the region braces for an attack from iran's largest proxy. iranians are reportedly expanding their nuclear program at a key underground site. bret? >> bret: trey yingst live in tel aviv. trey, thanks. so what about this growing u.s.-israeli tension and just close to the presidential nominees perspective preparing for next week's first debate? let's bring in fox news chief political analyst brit hume. bret, good evening. we have heard about this tension between president biden and the prime minister of israel for quite some time. weeks, really. it seems to be coming to a head. at a very controversial. >> brit: it does, bret, with the debate coming in the united states between trump and biden. and it's not entirely clear how much aid has been withheld but i don't think there is any question some has. the administration disputes that i would tend to believe benjamin here. i don't think, frankly, bret, in political terms that this dispute dispute between israel and the u.s. over this issue is harmful to president biden as he sees it. the president is worried about support and this country, especially in his own party. and so being at loggerheads with benjamin netanyahu may be at least in the short run a good politics for the president as he tries to unite his party behind him. i'm not sure it's good long-term fall election politics but for the moment i think it's useful to him. it looks ugly. and israel, you know, has yet to finish the job it's tried to do in gaza and now has threatened with an all-out conflict with hezbollah to the north. which it may be in a position to win, but that would be ugly and very destructive. wreaking much more bomb damage on israel than hamas has ever been able to do. so it's something to be worried about for sure. >> bret: yeah. i mean, israel, the situation in the middle east, likely to be a big topic at that debate next week. as you look at that, and you see what we have been covering this week about the controversy and what the white house is pushing back on these videos they call cheap fakes of president biden. how do you see that vis-a-vis the debate next week? >> well, i think, you know, president biden's capacity or lack of it to serve out a four -- another four year term when he is 81 years old and obviously having senior moments right and left is a real issue that -- i don't know how much it will actually be discussed in the debate. it will depend more on whether biden can pull himself together for, you know, a couple of hours and be on his -- at his best in the debate. i think it will be difficult for him to do so. and then the question, of course, arises somehow president trump will behave. i think he probably now seems to be realizing that his performance in the first debate in 2020 where he buffaloed everybody, the moderator included and tried to completely dominate the debate did not help him lately bret, one of the things we have seen from president trump he has begun acting like a political grownup. the endorsement of larry hogan to be the new republican senator from maryland, a very, very much a blue state, and this is a man who has said he will not vote for former president trump that is not the kind of behavior we are accustomed from seeing from president trump. it's remarkably different, i think. >> brit: quickly, just as we saw before the state of the union address, the exceptions game for president biden heading into next week? >> the one thing that biden's recent troubles with his memory and moments where he seems to freeze may have helped him and it's nothood helped him in the sense that it's made his health an issue. but it certain -- it has to have the effect lowered exception for his performance to the point if you can get through the debate without drooling his will be saying he won a big victory. we will see. >> seeking damage for conch he says implied his alleged involvement in the death of a former hole classmate. correspondent jonathan serrie has details from atlanta. >> buster murdaugh has filed a defamation suit against several media companies, including warner brothers and netflix claiming they falsely insinuated he was involved with the unsolved death of his former high school classmate stephen smith. >> steven's death is now intertwined with the murdaugh family. >> buster who denies any involvement in smith's death is seeking unspecified damages against the documentary producers for alleged harm to his reputation. but an attorney for smith's family says the lawsuit is likely to backfire on buster, subjecting him to lengthy depositions with attorneys from big media companies who are in no hurry to settle. >> i think they are going to defend this case vigorously. i think they are going to use it to get additional content. it wouldn't surprise me if there is additional documentaries. >> stephen smith died in 2015. his body found on a country road about 15 miles from the murdaugh family's hunting estate. authorities initially ruled it a hit and run. but reopened the case as a homicide investigation after the 2021 murders of buster's mother maggie and younger brother paul. a crime that led to the conviction of his father alec murdaugh and placed the whole family under a national spotlight. attorney eric bland hopes buster's legal action sheds new light on smith's death and brings his mother some long awaited answers. >> well, i could tell you today the happiest person, because buster filed this lawsuit is not necessarily buster. it's sandy smith. because of what the discovery may yield in this case. >> and buster's father serving two life sentences and a maximum security prison in south korea. south carolina. alec murdaugh admitted to financial crimes but to this date insists he had nothing to do with the deaths of his wife and son. bret? >> >> i'm very concerned. and it's good to be on with representative wittman. our china select committee had a bipartisan hearing on fentanyl on china funding basically fentanyl coming into the united states. it was one of the most emotional hearings. we had parents in the audience holding up pictures of their lost sons or daughters and it's outrageous, we need to be sanctuarying chinese funding drug gangs and mexico and supplying fentanyl. >> congressman wittman, i know you two work across the aisle a lot and you try to find common grounds on a lot of things and we will talk about another one in a second. the two parties couldn't be more different in how they talk about the border and security. here is the former president and the current president. >> our country is under invasion. we should not be talking amnesty. >> we can both secure the border and provide legal pathways to citizenship. >> bret: is there a way to make these two parties come together? democrats will point to the senate bipartisan effort that failed in part because they allege the former president didn't want it to succeed. how do you all work across the aisle on dealing with this? >> to me, it's pretty simple. there are policies that we can put in place that have achieved that, the remain in mexico policy making sure we secure the better, making sure, too, if people are seeking asylum in the united states they begin that process in their country of origin. we don't want them making that treacherous trip across mexico thousands of miles at the mercy of coyotes and other exporter there's on their journey. both party know what need to be done. it's a matter of how do we get to those basic elements, secure the border. make sure that people remain in their countries of origin pursuing asylum and make sure, too, some order before people try cross the border. >> china committee, the selected committee. and there are different elements of this, congressman whitman, you deal with minerals, policy, critical miserables and not having a u.s. rely on that. a lot of things happening also on human rights congressman khanna the guardian had a story china has renamed hundreds of uyghur villages and town according to human rights group about 630 communities have been renamed in this way by the government of china, mostly during the height of a crackdown on the uyghurs. that seller governments and human rights bodies have called a genocide. how much of human rights is talked about on select committee. >> it was the first hearing of the committee. it was outrageous what is happening in jing jiang. they are trying to basically eliminate the uyghur's culture. we need to make sure any entity that's involved in that human rights abuse is sanctioned and no products are coming in to the united states. one area i think common ground is that right now there is an exception up to $800 you can ship things into the united states without any tariffs or any sanction. we need to lower that exemption. some of that is coming from the places that have violated human rights. >> bret: congressman whitman, we mentioned this minerals policy. there is a u.s. supply chain he dependency that you all are trying to address. >> we can build all the semiconductor plants we want. with you if we don't have access to those base materials. we will not be independent from china. china today owns is hundred percent of the world source. a base component in silicon to make semiconductors. we have to make sure that we're reliant on ourselves. not on others. china owns 16 of the 18 mines in africa. they are the worst environmental violators. the worst human rights violators. we cannot keep that going by buying those elements from chinese companies that are mining in africa. let's get back to producing our own rare earth elements to we are not dependent on china. >> bret: as you get closer to an election. oftentimes it's tougher to do things together across the aisle. common ground is not that popular as you get closer and closer to november. is that fair, congressman khanna? we're going to keep fighting to restore roe v. wade as law of the land. >> if the radical democratic extremists get their way, they have a federal law for abortion in the seventh, eighth, ninth month. >> bret: you may see more of those lines as the first presidential debate gets underway. top line showing president biden leading for the first time really since october of 2023. within the margin of error as you see back there. also, five way race the lead is down to 1. again, within the margin of error as you see robert f. kennedy jr. getting 10%. if you look at the trust to do a better job on, the different issues. still the former president big on immigration, leading by five on the economy. you see it's a little closer on the israel, hamas war and then president biden on future of democracy and abortion. and that's where we will start with our panel. leslie marshall, democratic strategist. charles hurt, opinion editor for "the washington times." and mary katharine ham, columnist for outkick. mary katharine, welcome back to the panel. thank you very much. >> bret: your thoughts on what you see inside the numbers and what is going to get close block buster presidential debate. >> this poll is good news for president joe biden who hasn't had any good polling news. much lining the "new york times" siena important voters constituency falling off large period of time should be alarm belfort biden campaign. this might be a little shot in the arm or the gut for the trump campaign to look at this summer and be okay, maybe we do need some recalibration here and you need to put on a good performance this week. these are two candidates who have significant weaknesses, i think. we have toker are, again, it's always good to run like you are going to lose. like you are five points behind, trump should remember that actually biden beat him last time in a debate. >> this is a different biden is he facing. i do think they have some discipline problems and i'm root for both of them to be coherent and prepared because i would rather see that than an assault on the english language. here we go. >> bret: apparently president biden heading to camp david. i don't know how much we will see him. he is going into prep sessions. the former president is just having policy discussions with aides and other people like senator j.d. vance who we had on last night. as you look at these numbers, do you see positivity for president biden? it is definitely, as we mentioned within the margin of error. >> yes. but can i also take a victory lap myself. i told you. so the reason i say this is as the economy continues to improve, as inflation goes down. as crime goes down and hello democrats, would you tell people that not just me telling people that? you are going to see these numbers go up because it's not just going to be the headlines, not just going to be wall street having two historical highs, it's going to be people in america, the majority voters, majority of those voters middle class who are starting to feel all the pose tiftd that they are reading about in the headlines, it's not just the rich folks that, you know, have their money in the market or on wall street. and that's what i think we are seeing in the polls. i think we will continue to see that in the polls, and that's why i think that president biden hasn't paid a lot of attention to the polls when he has been making decisions, you know, over the past few months. >> bret: yet, charlie, we see these stories that are citing senior inside campaign aides, axios has one out, top dems biden has losing strategy, a democratic strategist in touch with the gain told axios unclear to many of us watching from the outside whether the president and core team realize how dire the situation is right now and whether they even have a plan to fix it, that is scary. they are worried about the focus on the threat to democracy. i will say in our new poll the future of democracy actually does pretty wells at list of concerns that voters have. >> honestly i was most surprised about that number the future of democracy. obviously it means two different things to both sides. to the left, it's talking about this fear that donald trump is going to be some dictator on day one or whatever. to the right, to conservatives, they look at that and they see all the lawfare, this effort to use the courts to go after donald trump as the future of democracy. obviously, joe biden has a slight advantage in this poll. but, you know, at the end of the day, these elections usually don't turn on amorphous things like the future of democracy. elections turn on things that really matter to elm pooh. the economy is always going to be number one. or two. security also number one or two. the border would be security. and obviously donald trump has a tremendous advantage on that. he also has an advantage on economic issues. and i disagree with what leslie says. i really don't think that people are feeling this good vibe in the economy. you know, i think it may be other reasons for why the tracking suggests maybe a couple points added to biden's -- to biden, but essentially tied. as for the axios thing. that thing -- that story reads like, you know, campaign officials, white house officials already trying to cover their tails in an election. in a campaign. when you get that this early on. that's kind of alarming for them. >> bret: yeah. mary katharine, meantime, republicans holding the convention in milwaukee in mid july, four days after the sentencing in new york of the former president. we don't know how that is going to go. remember last week there was this politico piece, wisconsin dems tear into trump after he reportedly called milwaukee a horrible city in uproar saying the quote was the g.o.p. milwaukee host city is a horrible city during a meeting with house republicans on capitol hill thursday. well, the former president came out vigorously talking about milwaukee. >> i love milwaukee. i was the one that picked milwaukee i have to tell you. [applause] i was the one that picked it. these lying people they said oh, he doesn't like milwaukee. i love milwaukee. i said you got to fix the crime. we all know that make sure the election is honest. but i'm the one that picked milwaukee. >> bret: and there was a report that he was going to go a chicago hotel. now is he going to milwaukee, we're told. listen, bottom line, bottom line wisconsin matters in this election. >> look, i like milwaukee as well. it was the place that was chosen on purpose. so that republicans can go there and make these -- make a statement, right? and the thing about trump and the comments like this and i don't want to put too much stalk in this one because it is coming from inside this meeting and he is correcting himself or what have you. but there are fewer of these comments that go viral in this way that could be damaging from him. i think his campaign is more disciplined than it's been in the past. i think is he slightly more disciplined than he has been in the past. i wouldn't push too much stock in a either. is he more busy dealing with a lot of other things. right? the point being that when biden pitches i'm the steady hand on the wheel, he is not getting as much contrast with trump lately because he is not going viral saying loopy things as frequently and biden himself is frankly saying loopy things on a regular basis in front of people's eyes which as part of the media and administration want to deny is there is happening and people see it and 70% sometimes in polls say he might be too old for the job. these are things that people see with their eyes and believe. they are not feeling the positivity partly because of those things. he doesn't feel like a steady hand on the wheel. he doesn't feel like the contrast to trump that he used to feel like. >> bret: leslie, i promise we won't relive the conversation from last night. i'm going to leave there thank you very much. we'll see you. ♪ >> finally don't a juneteenth special salute. >> i feel like a celebrity. i feel very good. i feel very blessed. happy to be in america. i'm the happiest black america. >> bret: earlier today the honor flight network hosted first ever juneteenth honor flight trip to commemorate the service and sacrifice of african-american veterans. dozens of these veterans were flown into washington to visit sites such as the world war ii and vietnam memorials. among the honorees 101-year-old veteran, three purple heart recipients and four women veterans. congratulations and thanks for your service. tomorrow on "special report" we will have the pollsters breaking down the presidential race where we go from here this close to the presidential debate. this is it for us tonight. thanks for inviting us neuro i don't home tonight, fair, balanced and still unafraid. ♪ >> laura: i'm laura ingraham. this is "the ingraham angle" from washington tonight. thanks as always for spending time with us
