The crackdown on that campus, on uclas antiisrael encampment is happening days after anarchy, were already seeing it happen at Columbia University. Schools are finally calling in Law Enforcement and clearing out those dangerous manifestations of hate against jews. Officers in riot gear tore down plywood and removed pallets and metal barriers. We see some of that on the video. They used smoke flares and flash bangs that you could hear. They were trying to control the crowd. Look at the guy, he is not just wearing a mask, he had on goggles, too, did you see that . They dont want you to know who they are. We know they hate. Then they started making arrests and the show of force after only scenes like this earlier this week. Watch. Proisrael Counter Protestors took on their rivals. April 22nd was the last time President Biden talked about this and wasnt prepared remarks, just a stray question that a Pool Producer managed to get to him while he was exiting an earth day event. I also condemn those who dont understand whats going on with the palestinians. A lot of folks, critics of President Biden, said it was similar to President Trumps remarks after charlottesville where he said there are very fine people on both sides. Yesterday Karine Jeanpierre said fundamentally they are are not the same. Bad faith to say that. Thats really all that weve been getting. They have not told us which University President s the president has talked to or how much of this he has been consuming on tv like the rest of us. Instead, they have just been telling us and assuring us he is being briefed in realtime. The president has not been silent on this issue when it comes to hate speech, antisemitism. He launched the firstever antisemitism strategy to counter antisemitism. Something no other president did. We are going to continue to do the work. As the president is being kept regularly updated on what is happening, he is monitoring the situation closely. And thats critical. They are looking at this as something that President Biden doesnt need to talk about every day. Something crazy happens overnight on a college campus. They think he has such a strong record speaking out against antisemitism. When you look at it. He does have a strong record, just not this week. He put out an antisemitism plan for College Campuses but since that plan went out, there has been vile antisemitic rhetoric. Buildings have been occupied, lawns have been posting these huge encampments. So there are huge problems that he has not responded to. It represents a big difference between his comments in 2017 after charlottesville and anything that he has done or said in 2024. So as we look at what he is going to say any minute in the roosevelt room, where they have a small group of press that has been assigned just to travel with him today, standing by, it will likely be updated to be less of the kind of yes, its wrong what is happening antisemiticly but also wrong what is happening people that dont understand the palestinians. It is probably going to be different than that. Harris antisemitism, jewish hate. All of it we should have heard from him even if he is repeating himself if thats what he says he would do. Just keep doing it. Tell the people that they are wrong for carrying out threats against jewish students, so on and so forth. Places Like Brown University are negotiating with the agitators, protestors, some students and people who come onto campus to join the fray. One of the things they say that they want is for these universities to divest any monies from israel. This goes beyond feeding palestinians in case anyone was wondering. Lets go back to the University Of California In Los Angeles where police are clearing that encampment there. They began at 3 00 a. M. Students and professors are sharing how it has been to live and to exist on campus lately. Jews were not allowed to go into the campus. Jews were not allowed to go into the library or allowed to go to classes. It was never peaceful. This looks like a war zone. It demonstrates to me that this school is run by a bunch of cowards. Ucla needs to step up and keep their jewish students safe. It was a total disaster. Harris William La Jeunesse is at ucla and at the center of it all predawn this morning. Quite a day already, william. Yeah, it sure has. The campus is closed now. The university wants students to avoid this quad area. Maybe you can see why. Police are now moving in again. But i want to show you one important area, right . A lot of people wonder how did this encampment continue to resupply itself . It was right through here, The Back Door area they have continued to bring in supplies, plywood, power tools, you name it. Came through here and had to have a password or i. D. This is basically royce hall. I will take you down here. You can see security is just begin to arrive. They havent been here all morning since police left. Here you can take a look at some of the graffiti on the walls along here. Spray painted. Harris p president of the United States is speaking. President biden the right to free speech and for people to peacefully assembly and make their voices heard. The second is the rule of law. Both must be upheld. We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent. The American People are heard. In fact, peaceful protests is in the best tradition how americans respond to issues. But but neither are we a lawless country. We are a civil society. Order must prevail. Throughout history weve faced moments like this because we are a big, diverse, free thinking and freedom loving nation. Moments like this are always those who rush into score political points. But this isnt a moment for politics. Its a moment for clarity. So let me be clear, peaceful protests in america, violent protest is not protected. Peaceful protest is. Its against the law when violence occurs. Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. Its against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations, none of this is a peaceful protest. Threatening people, intimidating people, instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest. Its against the law. Dissent is essential but it must never lead to disorder or denying the rights of others so students can end the semester and finish their education. It is matter of fairness and whats right. The right to protest but not the right to cause chaos. People have the right to get an education, the right to get a degree, the right to walk across a campus safely without fear of being attacked. Lets be clear about this as well, there should be no place in any campus, no place in america, for antisemitism or threats of violence against jewish students. There is no place for hate speech or violence of any kind whether its antisemitism, islamaphobia or discrimination against Arab Americans or palestinian americans. It is simply wrong. There is no place for racism in america. Its all wrong. Its unamerican. I understand people have strong feelings and deep convictions. And in america we respect the right and protect the right for them to express that. But it doesnt mean anything goes. It needs to be done without violence, without destruction, without hate, and within the law. Make no mistake, as president i will always defend free speech and i will always be just as strong standing up for the rule of law. Thats my responsibility to you, the American People. He is going to see them again. This is the first time in nine days that weve heard from the president on this. Lets go deeper. Look, i think this is the most forceful thing he has said to this point. Obviously it is a carefully crafted statement. One that i think acknowledges the fact that he has frankly been ignoring this issue for too long and this white house, i think, acknowledges now this is a problem for them. Its a political problem for them. He can talk about people rushing in to score points. I dont think thats actually what was going on here. I think the American People were sitting back and looking at what was playing out on these campuses waiting for the president to show some leadership, to stand up for the jewish communities in these areas and to frankly speak to a lot of people who are part of his Democratic Coalition who are engaged in this type of chaotic behavior. Theyve been waiting. He has finally done it. Well see if there is any actual impact from this in terms of a response from campuses or from add min is administrators. Well see where it goes from here. Harris Phil Holloway, address the substance of the president s comments and any of it, as ben is talking about, that you think legally might compel some of these universities to step up. Harris, i think technically he said the right words. Legally is on point. The First Amendment protections end when things get violent. First amendment protections end when they bar jewish students from going into buildings where they are entitled to go. The First Amendment protections end when they put up encampments on property they do not own. However, he came too late. Where was he a week and a half or so ago before things got out of hand . Thats when the president needed to show some leadership. He didnt do it. Just like we saw no leadership from the president of Columbia University or even ucla. They allowed these individuals to get a foothold. Allowed them to bring cardboard and other things in there and to build these encampments. They let these people own that property with the tools they needed to create this chaos. This should have been addressed and nipped in the bud a week or week and a half ago. That being said, the president s words were on point. He said what the First Amendment means and it does not allow for unpeaceful, violent protests, things that violate the rights of third parties. Harris leo, your alma mater is the university of california at los angeles. Ucla. And i want to get first your take on what youve seen unfold and continue to since 3 00 a. M. Harris, i went to law school there. That is not the school i went to. I went to ucla law school. That was a national embarrassment. I respect my colleagues but the president gave a generic speech on what the First Amendment is. I get it. What you are watching and what the fox viewers are watching at Ucla Last Night is not free speech. Thats everything that is represents criminal conduct. I dont see free speech at ucla right now. Thats criminal conduct. What is missing from the speech is what are you going to do to protect Jewish American citizens . Where is it . I heard nothing. I heard crickets. I want to give everybody a news flash. All those individuals that were arrested, were in los angeles, theyll be released. We are in George Gascon territory. He wont prosecute anyone. Where is mayor bass and Governor Newsom . I didnt hear anything. One final point, harris, President Trump and the federal government can stop everything thats going on. It is called title vi. It is called the f. B. I. It is called the Department Of Justice. No federal prosecution whatsoever. What im seeing here as a law student and Ucla Law Student And Civil Rights attorney . I see the Jewish American students being victimized just like black students were in the 50s and 60s. They were protected by the federal government. They had federal marshals. They had protection. Jewish american citizens are not being protected by President Joe Biden and the democrats. Harris you bring up an interesting point. I want to further the leo is saying. The f. B. I. Director said their number one focus has been hate crimes. And how they are exploding across the United States. That was previous to october 7th. The border then became also, you know, right alongside that issue. As leo is pointing out, the hate speech, the threats to kill, just alone the physical that weve seen when we talk with students who say they are physically held back by students who say they are propalestinian, antiisrael, what do you make of the f. B. I. Not getting involved at this point . Harris, actions speak louder than words. If the f. B. I. Wants to start prosecuting these people that are barring jewish people from attending class, if the federal authorities want to start prosecuting people for false imprisonment and other federal violations, then well have something. But until the f. B. I. And the Department Of Justice actually do something, these are just hollow words. Instead we will be left with the local prosecutors who we already see in many places do nothing. They could learn a lot from the governors of texas and georgia and florida and elsewhere where these governors showed leadership and said it wont be tolerated. If you violate the law you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and you dont see those things happening in those states. It takes leadership.
