charlie: it's the 10th, right? will: the 10th anniversary of obamacare. watch. >> the presumptive nominee for the republican party for president says he wants to repeal the entirety of the aca, and if that would mean kicking millions of young people off their parents' health insurance, raising costs at a time when a lot of folks are just starting out. young people cannot sit on the sidelines. what you don't want is after the election young people would opt to not vote and then you find out you lost your insurance. >> we don'ting agonize, we organize. and all of this is at stake in november. trump tried to rip it away, affordable care for millions of americans including millions of young adults, and now he's doing it again. and again we had to make sure people know. rachel: this is the democrats trying to appeal to young people because, as you can see, their job approval numbers among young people are slipping 31% approve, 57 disapprove. i think this is a really odd message, you know? if. will: well, or it's the 14th anniversary, or it turns out. charlie, who celebrates the 14? charlie: there's no such thing as a 14th anniversary. nobody celebrate withs -- will: which reveals it is the simply to try the fix those horrific numbers with young people. rachel: right. and i can see if you're going to give them student loan are forgiveness, that's appealing. health insurance, i guess it's great for them that they can remain a, but what they really want is an economy that and an environment where they're up and going the way their parents were. i did not have health insurance. charlie, i don't know about you, i didn't have health insurance after i left my parents' house until i got married and, you know, that's just the way -- i never really, it wasn't a big deal for me. i'm wondering, is that a big selling point for young, healthy kids? if. charlie: well, i think in addition to that problem you also have the problem of for obamacare has not worked out well for working families. working families are paying, you know, something like double the amount of, for their, for their health insurance to cover their family, if their deductibles have been raised. obviously, there are some people who have benefited from obama obamacare, but a huge number of working families have continued to suffer horribly under obamacare. rachel: i guess the upside is you can pay for your basement 25-year-old's health insurance. will: yeah. i would be curious why young people are so displeased with joe biden. i think that we might have a tendency to reproject our liveses, because that poll went up to 30? if was it 31, 32, something like that, and say -- one of the things you talked about is the challenge of homeownership. home ownership prices are through the roof -- it's up to 34 -- and interest rates are so high, right? well, homeownership usually, not always, correlates with marriage and children, right? that 's when you start making that move in life. and before that you're content to rent. we know that marriage and children are being pushed off later in life, right? so i'm not sure that's all about is if in that ends at a 34, i'm not sure that's all about the challenges of homeownership. so what is the it that is so unpopular with young people? rachel: i'm going to tell you whats it is, it happened right here on the couch yesterday. we tried to order breakfast, okay? if we ordered egg bites and a couple cups of coffee, and the bill was $61 from uber eats. if they had an uber eats campaign, it would work better than this one -- [laughter] because that's where a lot of these single young kids -- the economy is crushing them the, inflation crushing them. but also do not underestimate, just to answer your question, will, the impact of the israel-gaza war. for whatever reason, if you're on tiktok with young people, this as has galvanized young people in a way that i'm actually surprise9. i wish they cared as much as -- about america as much as they do about gaza a and israel. if you go onto their platforms where they're at, this is a very driving force, and it's really driven a wedge between joe biden and young people. charlie: and, you know, another thing that i think going on here is that young people have amazing bs detech to haves when they want. to. rachel: thank you. charlie: they look at this,sing can they look at this effort to prop up the biden administration in most of the media, and they're like, okay, you know, or i tend to like all this stuff or whatever, but these guys are are full of it. and it's sort of like an automatic reaction now. rachel: and then you contrast that with donald trump who, love him or hate him, he's just himself. there's no bs, he's very authentic. and so there you go. will: all right, let's move to this, the federal government is deflecting blame over a viral video chase. we're going to share that video with you right now. it ends with a car on fire. take a look at this. [speaking spanish] get 'em on the ground, gunmen on the ground. charlie: this is what our border patrol if in texas, law enforcement officers having to deal with every day, and these are suspected human smugglers. it's incredible. rachel: eduardo luis alejandro -- these are illegal immigrants from venezuela. both were, you know, eventually charged we evading arrest and human smuggling, but these kind of chases end up in innocent people dying. they were going over 100 miles an hour. for all we know they could, you know, pull out the other way in front of another car. very dangerous situation. will: people still, i still think -- i think they're beginning to, but i think this video and videos like we saw earlier this week with the stampede of illegal immigrants are beginning to change -- i'm always fascinateed, rachel, with the casual news consumers, you know what i mean? because i think that's what depicts the course of the country. rachel: i think you're right. will: so the casual news viewer still sees illegal immigration as mexican, maybe central american. people coming over to work hard who are productive members of society looking for a better life. and those guys that we just saw in the car from venezuela. okay? that's a big leap. south america, gee graphicically we're talking about a big leap from mexico or el salvador. and then add on top of that we're talking about african -- rachel: chinese. will: -- chinese. this is the recipe today of illegal immigration. i think it's starting to break through. what's happening, this is very different. charlie: and also a it doesn't matter what our intent is, you know, we could be as welcoming as we want and have the rosiest ideas about who's coming over. you still have to be aware of what people with bad intent -- rachel: yeah. charlie: you know, what their intentions are. and, there's no sort of logical adult, you know, approach to this from the if biden administration. they're just, it's like a game to them. rachel: every month the terror, the apt of terrorists that we catch at the border, terror suspects, we break with records every single month. by the way, your state, will, doing what they can in the face of a lot of pushback if from the federal government trying to stop them from trying to control the border. here's lieutenant chris oliveras, he's a friend of our show, he's been on many years trying to alert this problem. he's slamming the federal government for deflectioning -- deflecting blame onto texas. listen. >> at this point over the last three years we continue to see this gaslighting from the federal government to the american people. they continue to deflect and blame texas. our legislators are trying to pass a law that would give our texas law enforcement a much broader authority to arrest unlawful crossings, and that would have been a perfect example in el paso, texas. s.b. 4, senate bill 4, which would allow us to arrest for unlawful entry, we would have been able to arrest every single individual that took place, that was involved in that situation and arrest them for unlawful entry. we have the tools in place, but the federal government continues to challenge us with lawsuits that try to stop governor abbott from doing his job, and that's protecting his state and also the country. so we have been addressing this issue. the fact is they've refused to acknowledge the issue because they have the liberty to stop the situation at the border. rachel: will, you talked about how people are starting to see it in a new way? i think back to 2016, remember when alexandria ocasio-cortez was outside of those detention centers and crying? is you had the first lady, u michelle obama, laura bush, hillary clinton writing letters, you know, for the poor if children who were being separated at the border. in 2016, '17, '18, the democrats were effective many making this a racial issue. -- in making this a racial issue. the border was about a race, was about republicans who, you know, hated mexicans and didn't like the brown-finishing ication of america, and now i think people are realizing this is the not about race, this is about national security. this is about chaos and crime and disorder. will: and economy. rachel: and the economy. it's a war on the working class as well. and i think that's the shift we're seeing. charlie: remember when aoc went to the border and told everybody people were drinking out of toilets, and it turned out she was really bad at push and she misinterpreted -- rachel: i didn't know the story, but i love it, charlie. [laughter] charlie: people said, oh, it was the greatest thing,-hysterical. she went and talked to these the people and came out and she was literally crying claiming they were drinking out of toilet, and it turned out that her spanish was a little rusty. rachel: ray i'm going to have to give her a few lessons. will: yeah. the boys are huge fans. who's opening for him? if jason isbell. i like jason as a musician. i want to get into this. happiness, okay? which pete would want us to say happiness is overrated -- [laughter] but still, let's talk about happiness. there's a new gallup world happiness ranking report. it says significantly the united states of americas has father-in-law out of the top 20 for the first time since the world happiness report was first published inside 2012. we're now number 23. driven, by and large, by the drop in the well-being of americans under the age of to. -- of 30. so the point that hegseth would make is happiness is not the target in life, purpose is the target in life, and happiness is a by-product. and i think he's got a great point about that. and that's how you solve it, by the way. what you're looking at a with people under the age of 30 is a little bit of listlessness. and not limited to them. why are we here, what are we doing, what are we accomplishing, and there are answers for all of that. and it's not for our own happiness. charlie: and i think even successful people who have virtually everything run into the same problem, because if yog and be miserable. and i do think, i think the purpose -- rachel: i know a lot of rich, miss if rabble people. charlie: oh, yeah. rachel: back to your idea of purpose p will, one or it's harder to achieve your purpose if you're on your pone all day and you're actually not doing stuff and having real -- i mean, especially for women. it's very much about relationships. and so much for young people, their relationships are virtual. hay don't even call their friends -- they don't even call their friends anymore, let alone go out and hang out on friday nights. heir doing a lot of stuff on their phones, and i think it's a really poor if substitute for interaction. and i also think as a religion rates drop, i think you're also seeing happiness rates drop because that's also a -- will: i'm going to ask you both this general winly, and i think your answers and mine are correct. i think there's a poverty of purpose. i think people live comparative lives through their phone to other people, and the decline in religion all can contribute to that decline in happiness. what makes the united states unique? all those same problems you would think would apply to the rest of the world as well, so why would ours be dropping and everybody else -- if not, they may be dropping as a welsh but not as precipitously as the u.s.? what is going on here that is uniquely bad as the rest of the world? charlie: you want to be careful saying this because obviously when you look at a $60 star the bucks bill, that's a pretty -- starbucks bill, that's a pretty shocking thing. but we have everything we need. very few people -- rachel: it's not material, is what you're saying. will: that could be it, charlie. charlie: oh, i think it is. will: comfort allows you to indulge the lack of purpose. people or that are struggling have a purpose. stop struggling. charlie: the happiest people i know are people who don't have everything they want. rachel: i think it has to do with family, and i think that in this country we've lost that sort of intergenerational living, that connection, that connectivity. and other cultures i think have held on to that a little bit better hand we have. and what's positive and hopeful about it is we can return to that. you're seeing a lot of families going i'm going to get a homestead, and we're going to live near each other. and i think that intergenerational, interconnectivity is the key to -- will: i think you're on to something. that's when the rachel byes com. rachel: he thinks i'm crazy, and once in a a while -- will: crazy like a fox. >> you sure are, yeah. they were once sort of promoted as the perfect landscape tree. heavy got pretty flowers in the spring, bright red foliage in the fall, they're shaped like a lollipop, and they take very little care. the problem is, one with of the problems, as they get old or they break really, really easily, and anyone that's got one in their yard knows any type of storm sends branches falling onto property, onto cars, all sorts of things. a lot of municipalities where these are plant widely across public spaces and lots of money and time after every storm trying to clean these things up. so there's really not a lot of great aspects to them now that we know what we know. charlie: and, of course, if you live around any sort of open fields, they tend to -- obviously, they produce a lot of berries that birds love, and then before you know it, you know, entire pastures get taken over by these things. >> yeah, they certainly do, you know? if driving down any road in the country at this time of year, you're going to to see white trees all over the place, and that's kind of the wild cousins of the bradford pear. these things have really big thorns, and they're known to injure livestock, they can injure people. we've seen them puncture tires on tractors and other vehicles. and as a landowner, a farmer or a forester, if you have these things on your progress, it takes a lot of effort, both time and money, the try to get rid of them and reclaim that pasture or reclaim that forest area so you can get some money off your land. charlie: what are two or three of your favorite alternatives to a bradford pear? >> well, who's in charge of these algorithms? rachel: zuckerberg. what he is his motive, political? financial? what's happening? >> most of the stuff is both. most of it's greed though. they just want us and our kids and everyone in the family to get sucked into clicking one post after another after another with regard to limiting what's there. they're also trying to keep you there longer by maybe not getting you pushed away from it. so they want to send things to you that you like. so i don't know where this is with this issue, but there's no doubt that there's a history of -- rachel: yeah. >> -- facebook and instagram tweaking their algorithms so you don't see things that you like that are in your political -- rachel: so what can i do as a user to get around mark zuckerberg and what he wants me to do? >> take your device, hire a woodchip, throw it in there -- [laughter] rachel: i have says -- days i want to do that. >> you can control what is recommended to you on the platform. in this controversy with instagram where they're not showing certain political things to you, it is not what -- who your following. whoever's saying what they want to say about who you're following, you're still getting that information, according to instagram and meta, but this has to do with who will be recommended to you that's not somebody you're already following. rachel: yeah. it feels, to me, like election interference, but here's what meta has to say. this change does not impact posts from accounts people choose to follow, or it impacts what the system recommends, and people can control if they want more. this announcement if expands on years of work on how we approach treat political content based on what people is have told us they wanted. who are those people? and now people are going to be able to control whether they would like to have these types of potes recommended to them. -- posts recommended to them. i have seen political content on my to own site suppressed, so i'm really jazzed up about this. enter here's what i like in this country. we should be doing what europe does. they have a separate body that oversees what they're doing behind the scenes, the wizard of oz at these social media company, and makes their own judgment and brings it forward and says, hey, that's not right without revealing the secret sauce of algorithms. rachel: well, the other hinging that europe is doing better comes to our second topic, which is they protect people's data better than we do. i don't know why we're not better at this, but this one's got me going with because this is about children. we're finding out that they're basically the bad guys, the scammer ors are targeting children. i mean, little kids. >> this is a huge identity crisis for kids in america. you're right, there's zero protection out there. and what's happening is super young children, they're finding out basic information about them and even applying for a social security number for your child and then cut to your child, say, applies for a student loan later in life. sorry, you're denied, your credit's destroyed. what do you mean? i've never ian gone for credit before. rachel: right. >> so this is a huge problem -- rachel: how do we protect our kids? >> all right. first of all, just be vigilant as a parent. freeze your child's credit whenever they start to get one. ask questions before anyone if ever wants data about a your family, specific details, why do they need too far it? -- to have it? rachel: right. >> be more guarded. lock away revealing documents whether it's an application for a school, medical information, make sure those are locked away from people who can sniff them out and use them against you. and a lot of people use identity theft or identity protections online for themselves. consider doing e it for the whole family which is -- you can get that more economically. the good ones are pricey. the bad ones are cheap or free, so you get what you pay for with that. rachel: all right. a third topic, the percentage of teens who are scrolling tiktok constantly, that number is 17%. what does that look like? what, if anything, do you expect to happen on monday? >> i, i have to admit, i have no idea with. there's several things that could happen. i mean, he says he's got some cash now, but he doesn't want to use it. i mean, that could happen. he's got, i think he put out on truth social he has $500 million in cash, but he doesn't want to use it. he wants to spend it on the campaign, so that's a possibility. you know, it's a possibility tisch james backs off and says, you know, i'm not going to be a big real estate holder. this is one of the weird things about this, james is no, like, rocket scientist as a prosecutor. if you tracked her record. i just can't -- it's the hard to get your hands around her ander office -- and her office literally taking all of trump's properties, becoming a landlord in new york city. they can barely do the job that they do now. [laughter] this case against him is absurd, but, i mean, we could go through other cases because i've been following her career a bit. so that's a possibility, that she backs off and gives him more time or lets the appeals process work because her options aren't so great. trump could literally just say here are the keys, figure it out, and she would be spending the next two years trying to figure out which part of which buildings he owns went you go through the subleases and lease- will: right. >> and the various limit partnership9. trump generally doesn't own a lot of the land under these buildings, he owns pieces of them. a lot of the pieces he owns have mortgages, so the banks have first lien on them. so he could do that,s say take it, it's yours, and try to figure out -- will: on that note, charlie, as i've taught this and try -- thought about and tried to understand the legal side of what happened happen, it's unlikely that anything happens on the real estate front because it would require leticia a james to file if a lien, execute that lien, as you point out. there's so many other stakeholders including bank withs on most of these properties that have to go to court and see who's first in line. but the one thing she could do, charlie, is she could freeze bank accounts, you know? >> yeah, she could do that. will: his access to cash could be immediately impacted. so what does that mean? i mean, that affects, what? if campaign, business, everything -- >> i'm assuming she would need a court order to freeze those accounts. she can't just do that unilaterally, and who knows what a judge will say is. are they going to say, trump, you can't live? if i mean, because you're donald trump? you know, you need access the cash. the banks tried to do that to him once too. they put him on some sort of a, like an allowance early in his career when he had faced massive financial problems in the early 1990s. i was just starting out in business journalism, and i remember covering him. so the banks put him on a leash are, you know?
