>> bret: greg palkot? thank you. there is considerable friction tonight between house republicans and the president over the southern border crisis and how it is impacting progress toward a huge foreign aid bill. the white house correspondent jacqui heinrich was our update from the north lawn, good evening, jacqui. >> good evening, bret. the white house is blasting republicans for stalling movement on multi billion dollars security package over immigration demands. but, as they call for compromise. they are not saying what con session sessions they would put up, either. >> democrats giving president biden a bump in approval over his handling of the israel-hamas war up nine points since november after a week-long pause in fighting. but his efforts to protect u.s. national security interest on the line again with funding for israel, ukraine, the indo-pacific and the border stalled. the white house on offense against the g.o.p. >> history will remember them harshly. >> president biden says he would embrace significant policy changes without divulging what they're. >> the gap seems to be between what the president is offering, which you don't have any details on, and what senate democrats have been willing to put into a package. >> there is probably a reason why you don't have perfect visibility into what everybody is saying behind closed doors and i think that's appropriate. we're not going to start negotiation in public. >> house republicans want to raise asylum thresholds and restart border wall construction. their bail nonstarter. >> it mandates detention of all families. that's extreme. >> democrats want to deal with funding now. policy later. >> if immigration reform takes time, we should do big things and take the time to do it. >> the administration says it's on republicans to bend. >> it's kind of a take no prisoners approach. all or nothing. >> we saw with the debt ceiling, we are seeing it now. even with the israel bill the house put forward condition funding on unrelated irs gluts the g.o.p. says democrats should take their own advice. >> i think there's a good chance that this funding package just stays dead for a long time, potentially for months because i see no indication that the democrats are willing to move. >> the white house says delays are a gift to putin who could remain president for longer than biden after plarmt. the white house won't say whether the president will call on congress to stay in d.c. until this funding fight is over. tomorrow he heads to las vegas and then to l.a. for a fund raiser. reportedly no longer co-hosted by matthew pritzker an heir to the hyatt hotel chain after he was sued for sexual misconduct, bret. >> bret: jacqui heinrich live on the north lawn, thank you. former president donald trump was not the target during last night's primary debate and neither was president biden. alexis mcadams is in tuscaloosa, alabama tonight to tell us who was. >> republican presidential hopefuls back out on the campaign trail. >> good to be back in iowa. >> and the attacks on nikki haley continue. ron desantis now comparing the former south carolina governor to california governor gavin newsom. >> i needed practice debating someone as liberal as gavin newsom. nikki was good. all seriousness if you look at that debate stage have you one conservative candidate running in that race and that is me at this point. that is just the reality. >> haley says she is being targeted because she is gaining steam and big donations. defending the money that's coming in from ceos and billionaires. >> no one sits there and asks for anything. make no mistake, these fellas, they would take every bit of that support if it was going to them. they are just jealous that it's coming to me. >> haley and her opponents still appear to be in a race for second place. according to the latest monmouth university poll more than half of republican voters say trump is the party's strongest nominee against president biden in 2024. and 41% of republicans who currently support another candidate say trump has the best chance to beat biden. even with trump on top, his age and mental fillness are being brought into question. >> we have pointed out that donald trump has lost some zip on his fast ball that father time is undefeated. that he would be the oldest president ever elected if he could get elected. that's different than trying to say somebody is not mentally competent. >> now, from alabama to iowa, bret, the candidates are back out on the campaign trail in the hawkeye state where they are trying to gain some steam and momentum because it's only six weeks, if you can believe it, to the iowa caucus. they are doing everything they can there on the ground. trump says he is going to blitz the state in the next few weeks to try to hold on to his lead and win iowa. hey, ron desantis plans to do the same thing, bret? >> bret: alexis, thank you. optimism ahead of friday's job report. fuel dow up, s&p 596, the will t scheduled to take the stand next week. today, he was upbeat about one element of that case. correspondent c.b. cotton is at the new york state supreme court tonight. >> i just want to tell you that the division, new york state just give us a very good ruling. >> former president donald trump celebrating a legal win today. a new york appellate court allowing trump's business certificates to remain intact as this civil fraud trial continues. >> we would appreciate it. i think the country appreciates it. businesses are watching this case. >> trump is expected to testify in his own defense monday. he denies allegations he inflated assets to get better loan and insurance terms. and says this trial is meant to hurt his presidential campaign. >> this whole case is a fraud. it's election interference. it's keeping me here instead of iowa and new hampshire. >> new york attorney general letitia james writing on x, donald trump engaged in years of financial fraud and enriched himself and his family. we have already proven the massive kale is of his fraud. no matter how much he lies. the facts don't. the judge has already found trump libel for fraud in this civil case. the trial will determine what penalties he will face, if any. but the former president predicts the outcome won't be in his favor. >> this attorney general, who is crazed. she is a lunatic. took sits here because she knows that she has the judge no, matter all the evidence that judge is going to rule in her favor. >> an accounting expert testified for the defense today saying the attorney general's complaint has no merit. he will return to the stand tomorrow. the defense expecting to wrap after trump testifies monday. bret? >> you know, it's not an easy decision. because i have had a really successful career and everybody very happy. but, there is a lot of things that liv golf has to offer that were very, very enticing. starting with team golf. being part of a team that's been something really big for me throughout my career. i was part of the spanish national team from the ages of 14 until i graduated college. i was part of the arizona state golf team. and, you know, as the pro-you don't have that chance very often and european or american you barely have that chance, right? it's something that is very, very fun to play for something more than just yourself and simply the growth that liv golf has brought to the game of golf. it's something fresh and new and ton of potential and opportunity and something i'm really excited about. >> bret: it's been reported that this deal is over three years, as much as $600 million? is that true? >> ha ha ha. i can't comment on any of that nor i do want. to say. >> bret: anywhere near that number? >> it's private business. it's private and it's going to stay private. >> bret: you have said before that it wasn't about the money. it's a bit of a change from what you have said before. talking about pga and liv. >> yeah. listen, it was a great offer. were the bret we were going to play a sound bite there you were saying the difference. >> sorry. i apologize. yeah, it's -- the money is great. obviously it's wonderful. but what i have said before is true. i do not play golf for the money. i play golf for the love of the game and for the love 6 golf. but as a husband, as a father and as a family man, i have a duty to my family to give them the best opportunities and most amount of resources possible. that's where that comes. in obviously it, is a factor. and it was an important one, obviously, in this decision. but there is many other things like i mentioned earlier that make it so exciting. once you get past that the love of the game and wanting to grow a global market, being part of the team, being a captain, hopefully being a leader to teammates it's something that is so, so special that it makes me want to work harder than i have to now to actually prove myself being european and growing up being a fan of -- hopefully some kids in the future growing up in spain they want to be part of this team that i'm going to build, right? it's something that hopefully i'm related to for a very long time hopefully until i die and can i make it something very special. >> bret: yeah. what about the tradition of the pga tour? obviously you started on the pga tour. it gave you the break at the beginning. for the people who say, listen, this is about the saudis coming in and really taking over a sport, buying a sport? that's the criticism. how do you answer that? >> well, i can't speak for anybody, and let alone pif or anybody related to that, right? but, you know, nobody is forcing us to do this. this is our own choice. if the product wasn't good, i don't think people would be making this job. i certainly wouldn't be doing it because, again. i have had a great platform on the pga tour and i'm forever grateful for the platform they have given me. if lucky, and things go well in the future, i still want to be part of that platform, right? liv golf gives me the freedom to be able to play golf when it doesn't conflate with the pga tour and i certainly want to be part of that as well in the future. >> yeah. you have been critical of the format before. is there any guarantee that you are going to get some changes in that? it's 54 holes. it's a shotgun start. all that stuff? >> well, i know captains have a say and i know they listen to the players. part of the organization. i'm looking forward to actually having some conversations and giving my opinion. and maybe some -- seeing some changes for the best in the future. but my goal with this is to grow the game of golf, right? to make it better, whatever that may be. i'm an ambitious person but i'm not a greedy one. i know i can't have everything there are some things i will have to sacrifice for now that seems like one i can live with. >> bret: yeah. what do you think for the guys that are on the pga tour now, watching this big move, what do you think happens to the pga tour with you moving over, maybe there are others that are going to fill out your new team. what do you think? >> i certainly hope they all accomplish what they have set out to accomplish when the top players got together touring this movement and change in environment we have had in golf and my message to them is i really hope they can accomplish what the goal is and what the goal will be. i'm very thankful for the work many of them have done. i would say highlighted by the names that come to mind, rory, and tiger woods. they have spent a lot of time in meetings and phone calls and learning about what the future of the game may look like. and i want to say thank you and i truly hope the result is what they want. this wasn't anything personal with them. it was a choice for me and my family and the better of my future. i hope all the friends i make still stay my friends. i'm certainly 'not going to change and ohio am certainly doesn't change. >> bret: do you think the pga deal comes together? do you think the merger or whatever it becomes is going to work? >> i certainly hope the best for the future, right? that's august i can say. whatever makes golf better. i have said numerous times in would you haves with people listening that don't know that i want to leave the game of golf at least in spain in a better state that i found it. the great was able to do that from what it started until he. game was popular from where it started. hopefully can i do my part to increase it. if i can do a little bit in spain and maybe the rest of the world, that will be a very successful career. at least in my mind and i hope that solves whatever issues may be right now in the game and we can actually enjoy really good healthy competition and the best can play against the best. >> bret: you mentioned seve and he is your icon, spanish legend won the masters in 1908 and '83. great side-by-side picture of you both putting on jackets and you had this last year. what do you think seve ball his stair rose would say about this moment in golf and what is happening here and your
