targeting three commercial vessels in the red sea it began at 9:15 a.m. local, the u.s. carney in antiship ballistic missile at noon carney engaged in shotgun drawn fire from yemen 1235 hit by a missile causing minor damage while assisting the ship they detected a second drone and shot it down, 330 a second commercial ship was hit by a missile no casualties, 430 a third vessel no significant damage while entering that distress, a third heading and its direction the carney shot down three drones in they say that houthis from yemen were fully enabled by iran there have been 75 attacks on u.s. forces in the middle east since last month it is notable the pentagon does not count attacks on u.s. warships at sea with this number, last night before the attacks in the red sea for more obama director in defense chief spoke at the ronald reagan national defense cb california on a panel hosted by ben hemmer and they want to see the biden administration respond forcefully to these attacks. are things the buildings and handful of troops that iran does not care about. in order to introduce deterrence is in the mind so in order to introduce deterrence over iran or anybody you need two things, you need to demonstrate you have capability to inflict harm that is clear we push the assets like the uss carney into the region. the second your adversary has to understand you have the will to inflict harm and inflict pain, right now iran does not think that this administration has the will to do so and they're probably right. jon: i know you used to work at syncom and i want to read part of the syncom statement that came out today about the various attacks, part of it said we also have every reason to believe that these attacks while launched by the who these in yemen are fully enabled by iran the united states will consider all appropriate responses. it seems that in the past we have not mentioned iran's involvement, i could be wrong about that but were definitely porting fingers and this particular announcement and do you think you're getting the message? >> i do not think they're getting the message. i think in the messaging one thing that is unclear we push these groups into the region, what are they doing, what are they there to do or respond to what are they there to strike what is a broader point relative to iran, that's not been clear in the messaging with tampa coming out of washington, d.c. here in the pentagon, this one goes a step further than the previous statement that we've seen as you identified mentioned in iran. i don't know that that gets it done think about previous times were we established the terms of iran 1988 the tanker wars back and forth in the arabian gulf like what we have now we struck 1988 we struck two iranian oil platforms and iran got the message, that put a cap on excavation because that is something that iran cares about. jon: than the targeting of soleimani during the administration that sends a message as well army this have had 75, 74, 75 attacks on our forces on october 7. our response has been four times that we responded. were sending messages that are not favorable to the strength that we need to deliver in the practice of appeasement is not going to stop anyone. we need to establish deterrence now much different than what was done with the ukraine buildup we had 70000 russians along the ukraine border and president biden stating are they going to be a minor incursion before we actually act increased the level of deterrence. i will add this under president trump people speculate with this of kurd under president trump, one thing we do know it did not. ukraine was not invaded, we do not have israel invaded and we did not have a high level of ill activity taking place throughout the world, not to mention how many americans had been injured, brain trauma from the miscellaneous missiles that have been fired at us, there is a lot of work to be done and we need to establish ourselves as the attacks in gaza, how do you respond to that as an israeli soldier. >> thank you for having me it's a clear situation we bring it down to basics if we want to prevent another october 7 from happening there is only one way to do that that is to make sure that hamas does ever have the ability to do so in the order for us to ensure that to our civilians which is our duty, what we have to do is to find hamas wherever they are in fact the mayor, it would be convenient and nice if hamas out in the open or in the few agricultural areas not so densely populated areas of gaza and if we fought from there, only hamas is not. they hide within the civilian population in use the civilian population as a human shield. that is why we have to go there and fight them there, what we are going to do to minimize exposure of civilians is to ask them to leave before we fight there, that will give them a chance to stay out of harm's way temporarily so we can focus on fighting and defeating the enemy. jon: hamas is obviously a proxy of iran the who they who they s launched antiship rebels, several attacks that were shot down generally by the u.s. warships. it is iran getting more involved in the fighting and what should be the response of the united states. >> first of all i'm happy and relieved no u.s. service member injured by this and obviously according to the press statements and the work done in the red sea and no u.s. service members are injured, it's very worrying to see the escalation and orders coming from iran, iranian weapons, iranian tactics and intelligence. and notice opera randy, we consider fingerprints all over this and what they're doing is jeopardizing and trying to destabilize international global shipping, that is a significant escalation. we see where this comes from its another pressure signal from iran and from our part of the world. what we are seeing we are taking the intelligence in assessing the situation and going to respond when we see the conditions fit and we will be responding to anybody that has tried to attack israeli targets or in this case not even israeli targets by aiming to destabilize the situation into her israel. >> we have the 911 call from a frantic teenage girl earlier this morning who said her cousin was killing her family. nypd said when the officers got to the scene they too were attacked but thankfully they are expected to recover. >> our officers pulled up to the driveway as they get to the driveway they see a male walking out carrying luggage, officers asked the mail a question or two and encountered boston ten seconds with a male who draws a knife on officers stabs one officer in the neck chest area and strikes a second officer in the head. >> investigators say one of the responding officers managed to shoot and kill the suspect 38-year-old courtney gordon. as officers made their way inside of the home they had to call the fdny. investigators believe the suspect set a couch on fire but once they were near inside the home that's when they made a gruesome discovery. 11 your girl, 12-year-old boy, man and woman, for family members had been stabbed and killed. a 61-year-old woman was stabbed and taken to the hospital in critical condition the nypd praising his officers for critical thinking on scene. >> they could've easily walked hlet him walk past they stopped asked questions story. >> awful, in new york city, thank you. the lapd arrest a suspect in serial killer he is charged with the killing of three homeless men who were shot while sleeping on the streets. he is also tied to another murder. christina coleman has latest developments on the story. >> good evening 33-year-old jared powell a resident of l.a. has been arrested in the serial murder case lapd believes he killed four people between sunday and wednesday of last week including a victim of the fellow home robbery and police are trying to determine if powell hurt or killed anyone else there sharing this bulletin urging the public to come forward if they are aware of additional victims it's unclear why powell shot and killed the three homeless men while they were sleeping. >> the person that killed one person every day for four days just think about that for a moment the day of his fourth killing he was arrested. powell was arrested wednesday night after his vehicle at 2024 bmw pulled over during the traffic stop. while he was in custody forensic custody connected his car and the handgun to the murders of the three homeless people from the three separate attacks around the l.a. area last week. >> the result has positively identified the handgun recovered from his car a been a murder rapid arresting homicides additionally our investigation has documented mr. powell's vehicle at
