hostages out and aid in, red cross gets access. so again, we have one more day today, hopefully we can get this thing extended and we'll see. >> any other way they feel they can determine the condition of the hostages, especially the americans? >> that's why the red cross access is so important because it's eyes on, it's an independent view and look to see how these people are doing. and that's why it's so important, why we have been fighting for it. >> thank you, john. regarding the attack in jerusalem which hamas has taken credit, does the u.s. view the attack to be a violation of the ongoing truce between israel and hamas? >> i don't want to get -- i'm not a lawyer here, this attack happened in jerusalem, the pause is in the fighting more specific to gaza. >> so simple as that. it wasn't -- therefore it didn't violate. >> didn't technically violate the deal in place but obviously it's a stark reminder of who they are facing and wa kind of enemy they are opposing. >> back to the photo on angola. >> one question. >> you don't think -- african leader, you can't take a question from an african journalist. >> i have one -- >> basically, john, you said -- >> is there -- african question, because -- >> thank you, thank you so much. >> all right, we can end this briefing if it's not going to be respectful here. chris -- >> that's what i'm saying, you have an african leader and don't take a question -- >> thanks, everybody. thank you. >> sandra: so that is it for the white house press briefing. john kirby, karine jean-pierre, did not take questions, john kirby did for a while there on the initial question over the pause, john kirby off the top saying he figured that that would be the first question out of the gate, of course, it was. he says i don't have any additional information on that right now. there's a whole lot that is going on and john kirby really not adding to any further detail as to what is going to happen next as we await more hostages to be released, john. >> john: yeah, that briefing ended rather abruptly, sounded like the correspondent for africa today has tried to get a question in, and as has happened in the past, karine jean-pierre declared he had not been called on and she was going to observe decorum or end the briefing, so she ended the briefing. i thought it was significant that kirby said it was a good thing that they got another day of a ceasefire today, day seven, see if seven can be turned into 8, 9, 10, and so on, indication the white house is pushing for an extended ceasefire here in an attempt to get as many hostages out as possible. the problem is, as we talked with lindsey graham and avi mayer of the jerusalem post, every day the ceasefire stays in place is more difficult for israel to say we are going to go back and start military operations. >> absolutely, and john kirby was asked out of the gate about the humanitarian pause, he said we are glad we got a 7th day out of there. i don't know there will be more, we certainly hope. the final american woman hostage, said i don't have additional information on that individual or what her condition is. hope we get more details and information soon. >> mia shem, the 21-year-old we saw in that horrible-looking cast with her arm sort of up like this, she had a grievous wound in her upper arm, she was taken from that supernova festival, that's her mom there on the left, you can see her there on the right hugging what i believe is her brother. she was released today and you can imagine what a happy homecoming that was. >> sandra: john, indeed. those pictures just in to us and on the screen now. john, thank you. meanwhile, so far hamas has been freeing only women and children. our next guest is calling for the release of their 22-year-old son, a gifted pianist, kidnapped from the music festival. edi, thank you for your time and joining us. please do give us an update on what you know right now and what you believe is going to happen next with your son. >> well, i hope that he will be coming back, obviously i have no idea where he is, what's with him. we don't know from the 7th of october we have not heard from him since. we are really hoping that maybe the red cross will come in and see what's going on with all the hostages that are still there. have not done that until now, which is very important, they'll do that. and i'm waiting, i'm waiting to find out about my son, when he'll be home, and as you said, sandra, he is a male, he's 22, and it's not into this category of woman or children, and it's very -- it's been really difficult. we are really happy, you know, impersonally very happy for everybody that's coming out but i'm still waiting for my son, you know. i'm a mother and doesn't matter what age your son is, he will always be my son, my baby, and i miss him and want him back home. >> sandra: we have been putting beautiful pictures up of your family idit, of your beautiful son, 22 years old, alon, and cannot imagine what you are going through. another mother whose son is in captivity pleading for his release. his arm was blown off. she's concerned about the medical help he may be receiving. >> yeah, i have to say something about that. my son was with him. they were both in the bomb shelter, and my son was with him and they were taken together in the truck. so i know, it's about herch i know him very much. and his family, we were just talking just two minutes before i went on to find out each other what's going on, and if we know something. they are wonderful people and this boy is just like my son, 23, my son is 22, and we are both waiting and hoping that they will come out, yeah. >> rachel's son was there at the festival celebrating his 23rd birthday. he turned 23 just days before this happened. so, sounds like you've been in touch with that family and rachel, she joined us on the program on tuesday, and idit, we cannot imagine what you are going through, she tried to explain what she is. here she was. >> i would love bigger numbers of hostages because i think having ten at a time leaves a lot of room for that delicate thread to break at some point. i don't know how to predict or explain what is taking place there now. i just am a mom, and i want my only son to come home to me. i'll take him with one arm. >> sandra: idit, if you could, could you stand by with us for just a moment? we want to speak to you more, we have an update from the idf, their spokesperson is giving an update right now. let's listen. >> continuing and waiting the arrival of additional abductees, and in accordance to the plan is planned. during the night we insisted on the return of the children and women. do so tomorrow as well. the qatari and egypt, the intermediaries are also committed to the agreement to be continued so the ceasefire will continue. idf is ready to continue the war. prepared for the attack at any moment in time, tonight as well as tomorrow, at any time. we are complete readiness on all fronts. the hamas terror organization is documenting bibas and the entire family in our hearts. we will do everything we can to bring our abductees back. speaking about psychological terror which hamas is activating against the families and all of israeli citizens. the intention is to harm, to cause us harm and pain. their claims -- hamas claims are still not confirmed and this repeats and stresses the fact that all should know, the medical condition of all the abductees should be examined by red cross or any other organization, what they agreed upon and that's how we are preparing for tomorrow as well. our hearts are in the members of the abductees and all those whose members have -- we have a great ethical obligation to bring all the abductees back home. this morning three citizens were murdered in jerusalem in a terrorist act and also an occasion in jordan valley. one was killed by idf. preventing additional terrorist attack. today is the day for appreciating and showing appreciation for all the handicapped and all those of idf soldiers who were injured. we all know how hard and difficult and heavy a price we are paying for all those who are injured in body and spirit. and i salute you all and i hope you have a happy -- a quick recovery. regarding blinken's visit, are there any limitations about the combat on our part? and what about the obligation to have ten abductees return a day. we are committed to continue as agreed before. we have a list of women and children, that was agreed upon. women who were returned, the two was on the list of these citizens of israel, yesterday, 12 returned and today a dozen, to ten. that's what we had agreed upon, i repeat and said it before, tomorrow as well, there are rules, women and children is the agreement that was made and has to be met. regarding blinken, secretary of state, the chief of staff met him as well together with the prime minister and members of the cabinet that the chief of staff presented to him what had happened to date in the war and stages in the next stages we speak on a regular basis with the chief of staff of the u.s. and we are looking at the original aspect and the terrorist actions that are happening in this, and also about the next stages in gaza i repeat, i say male and female abductees, i'm saying male and female until it's all settled, it's not settled. yesterday 12 were returned. 12 were returned. who are now list. and the agreement is ten and there was a list we insist on getting the maximum possible. that's what happened every day so it would be today. we are seeing in the north sector hezbollah with vehicles wondering about -- i'm going to talk only what i know about. i tell facts i know. i saw in the north together with the chief of staff spoken to everybody, we looked at the present situation beyond a discussion with them the situation, picture -- we are at high level of readiness. we are flying over, we are seeing and ready for any terrorist act. we are going to be ready for and are ready at all borders, including the north. thank you very much, and have a good evening. >> sandra: all right, so that's the update from the idf briefing as this truce is extended beyond what we heard from john kirby earlier. it looks like we are still in a wait and see, john. >> john: we are. he did have, didn't have any news, because he did not really know anything, but he did mention kafir bibas, the 11-month-old baby and his family, saying they heard the reports from hamas, they have not been able to confirm what hamas is saying and what hamas is saying is that his brother and mother were all killed in an israeli airstrike. as we were talking with avi mayer from the jerusalem post, rumblings in israel, the bodies of three israelis would be returned and that could potentially be kafir bibas and the other members of his family. we don't know anything further about that, and there was month more information. >> sandra: and wanted to make sure i said thank you to the money of alon, the 22-year-old man still in captivity. his mother joining us a short time ago, idit pleading for his release, how difficult it is for these mothers. we will rachel on on tuesday, whose 23-year-old son as we learned was taken into captivity along with alon. just imaginable for so many parents who are seeing the stories and the parents pleading for their children's return. >> john: and it's horrible what happened to those young people in that particular case. they all tried to escape the festival and go into a bomb shelter to hide from hamas, get away from hamas, and hamas kept throwing grenades into that bomb shelter. some were thrown back out but some exploded inside, killed a number of young people. that's what took half of herch's arm off. but can you imagine, being at a music festival and suddenly hiding out in a bomb shelter and terrorists are throwing hand grenades inside the bomb shelter. >> sandra: their lives changed. >> john: that's what they went through, unbelievable. all right. israeli officials are now trying to document all of the atrocities that were committed against women. first respondsers have described the bloodshed, torture and sexual trauma inflicted on women and girls in the final moments of their girls. critics say the united nations has not been tough enough on this, and feminist groups are silent. more people are silent, including sheryl sandberg. >> anyone with a mother, a sister, a daughter, must speak out now to condemn rape as an act of war. >> john: the president of an american news agency covering israel and the middle east, we will talk to her about that silence and the u.n. role investigating these crimes. but gillian, how are the families of hostages responding to this. >> sound bite from one of them. hamas we know is using rape as a weapon of war against women, young girls, mostly thanks to forensic exams done on corpses after october 7th. the families of hostages are ringing alarm bells to answer your question, they think hamas is still continuing to commit sexual atrocities against people in captive. take a listen. >> i also want to bring out, there are young women that we have to get out of there, i will not say what is happening, but we all know what is happening to young women. >> u.s. lawmakers on capitol hill say they have seen the evidence as well. take a listen. >> hamas raped women and killed frail and elderly civilians. that's who hamas is. >> so now american and israeli jews say groups that claim to care deeply about women are failing them. israel's first lady writes the silence from international bodies over hamas mass rapes is a betrayal of all women. it's not the condemnations of gender-based violence by hamas have been weak or insufficient, there have been none at all. an official from u.n. women, a group dedicated to protecting women declined to protect the sexual violence condemning instead to investigate all alleged violations, and from mayim bialik, where are the believe them voices, those of us who have sought to shout from the rooftops when women's bodies are used in war for the sadistic pleasure of perpetrators are astounded how the world is silent. and chuck schumer blasting civil rights groups also complicit, failing israeli women. >> not long ago many of us marched together for black and brown lives. we stood against anti-asian hatred, we protested bigotry against the lgbtq community, fought for reproductive justice. but apparently, mr. president, in the eyes of some, this principle does not extend to the jewish people. >> the u.n. secretary general finally weighing in on this issue 50 days into this war after these mass rapes were committed, he tweeted about it yesterday. john, secretary blinken is in israel, back in tel aviv, we will hear from him any moment at a presser. back to you. >> john: the silence from the world is remarkable and the u.n. official had the incomprehensible word salad that martha was talking about yesterday. >> sandra: thank you for joining us. the word salad offered up by the u.n. official, the u.n. official went on cable news and was pressed about the atrocities by hamas and couldn't explicitly condemn hamas for their actions. watch this. >> u.n. women is deeply, deeply alarmed at the disturbing reports of gender-based and sexual violence on october 7th. >> is there a reason sarah you can't specifically call out hamas and the mounting evidence now over seven weeks that israeli investigators have collected. >> u.n. women always supports impartial, independent into serious allegations of gender-based or sexual violence. >> what is that? >> it's a walkback for sure and i think a big problem going on that women around the world are not coming forward and they should be and it doesn't matter if you are a jew or not a jew or you are israeli or korean or thai, there has to be a unified message here that they won't stand for women being violated whether killed, maimed, raped, and there were people that i spoke to and there were witnesses that were here in israel that saw what happened. forensic experts that were able to tell many journalists here what they saw. there were people on the sidelines who hit during the raid music festival. it's not like there aren't testimonials that have come out. we know right now that about 30% of the women were -- of the 240 to 250 that were kidnapped were part of the contingency of women in gaza. to date there are about 25 or 26, i'm not sure of the exact number, but about what's left. we have to worry about the women that are still there, simultaneously asking the questions as journalists what's really going on right now. >> sandra: i want to highlight the podium here, as we await secretary of state antony blinken. he is offering up a solo press availability. this is the live shot in tel aviv, israel, we have the shot up now. we do expect that we will hear from him shortly. but meanwhile, this is chuck schumer. he took to the senate floor here to talk about jewish americans feeling alone in this moment. >> jewish americans are feeling singled out, targeted, and isolated. in many ways we feel alone. >> sandra: that probably resonated with so many that are feeling like that in this country right now. >> and you are absolutely right. i think there is sort of a sense ever going back to world war i and world war ii when jews were very concerned for their well-being. and here you talked about women, but we are talking at large that sentiments ever antisemitism and feeling concern just for your own safety. it's a strong issue you bring up and something that has to be dealt with as a bipartisan issue and has to be dealt with everywhere, whether it's on university campuses, it's in the halls of the hill, and it has to be dealt with globally. so i think it again requires international attention and really people who are there that bear witness to what happens can't be shy. you spoke about mihal herzog, but where are the sheryl sandbergs who are jewish, good for them. but as a woman who does speak about these issues as well, i would like to see the voices that aren't jewish come out on behalf of the women that are jews, antisemitism going on and you would then see a c change that everyone is talking about. >> sandra: you mentioned sheryl sandberg, this is the instagram from here. >> silence on this from too many is deafening. we have come so far in believing survivors of rape and assault in so many situations how can we ignore how these women spent the very last moments of their lives? >> sandra: a passionate plea, you wonder if it will be heard by those not outright condemning those acts. >> you know, sandra, we look at journalism in terms of facts and the u.n. secretary general and i don't think he passed journalism 101. come to israel, see what went down, speak to the forensic specialists themselves. >> sandra: appreciate your time, thank you very much for joining us. >> thank you. >> sandra: john. >> john: sandra, we are expecting an update any moment now from secretary of state antony blinken in israel. he's been holding talks with both israeli and palestinian leaders. updates on that as soon as we get them. >> sandra: plus two more hostages added to the list of those released by hamas, more expected to be set free soon. but can we see another hail mary extension in hopes of securing another round of releases? we are going do ask mark when he joins us live next. >> i support the idea of trying to get as many innocent people released as possible. but the idea that israel would not destroy hamas after october 7th is implausible. veteran by what happened on october 7th but resolved to take this to the end, because they understand that unless the idf dismantles the infrastructure and removes them from governing gaza they will never be safe again. they want to see the hostage out and the loved ones out but understand the israeli defense forces has to return to operations. >> john: the white house seems to be of a different mind, if the prime minister would agree to that, it would be the end of the government. you are right, but i think president biden is trying to drip drip drip the israelis into a permanent ceasefire which would leave hamas standing. hamas is the winner and hamas has promised publicly to do october 7th over and over and over again. >> john: there's no way hamas is going to play nice with israel, look what happened with the shooting at the bus stop in jerusalem which kirby said flat out was not a violation of the ceasefire because it was outside of the confines of gaza. does that make any sense to assumption there is a return to military pressure is the only thing that's going to give the israelis the leverage to try and save these lives. otherwise hamas would hold on to them for years and use mentioned one of the ships that the carney was escorting was carrying military equipment to the region. my understanding this is not a government ship but are you able to say whether that shipment was and lastly, in terms of rules of engagement with some of the uab activity, what is the threshold? obviously these incidents are happening in international waters. do you have information on how far out was the drone before it was shot down by the carney? >> i don't have the exact measurements how far it was from the carney, but of course a commander of a ship, if he or she assesses that the drone or are missile is a threat to that ship and the personnel on that ship, they have the authority to shoot it down. i don't know there's a threshold as far as the command every of that ship feels these not considered targets, what is the target, why are these not being considered attacks like the attacks in syria and iraq because the iranian proxies are missing there, too. >> i don't know that we would say these are not attacks, we are taking action if they are a threat to us. but target, initial assessments with what the mason took down and the carney took down, our initial assessment was they were not the intended target but came close enough the carney felt the need it had to engage the drone coming its way or headed toward, in the general direction. and i'm sorry, you had another question in there. >> i guess just to pinpoint it a little bit more. if it not the intended target, then is it an attack or not an attack? >> well, again, i refer you to the -- to the people who are launching these drones or missiles. what they're intended target is. we can't really speak to that. what we can speak to is the fact that our initial assessment, and if that changes we would let you know. initial assessment right now is these ships are not the intended target. if that changes, and if we continue to go through our assessments and say you know, we did another analysis and did look like they were targeting the carney, we would, of course, let you know and adjust how we are talking about these. but again, it is up to the commanders of the ships, if they feel they are under attack or the personnel are threatened to responds and take action. >> so president biden met with chinese president xi earlier this month in san francisco and they said that military to military communication would continue or restart. has secretary austin or anyone in the u.s. military been in contact with -- >> sandra: interesting moment on the latest attack or almost attack on u.s. forces, john, talking about how it was not the intended target and if it wasn't, what was. sort of a vague, non-answer there about getting further details. but the questions off the top were about the downed osprey off the coast of japan there, and big questions over the future of military aviation and the use of that aircraft. >> john: when you take a look at it, more incidents involving the osprey than you want to remember. and i recall a number of times flying on an osprey when we were going places with eipresident bh or president trump, and every time i got on the aircraft, i thought about the other incidents. incredible aircraft, i was never fully comfortable flying on it like other ones. just got some video in of a hostage transfer, very, have he emotional, the mother and brother of 21-year-old mia shem, awaiting for her release. let's watch. >> john: you don't need words to describe there. the mother who saw the video of her daughter a number of weeks ago taken by hamas and released. also photos that accompanied the release of that video of her with a grievous wound in her upper arm and her arm in a cast, sort of like this. she had surgery to repair it. boy, what a moment there where she finally comes home. >> last seen at a dance party, 21 years old. taken along with other hostages, abducted into gaza, french nationalality, right. just unbelievable to see this reunited with her family. think about the last moment before she was abducted, john. she was enjoying life, having a good time, and the amount of time that has passed she has been in captivity. and we have no idea what that was like for this young woman. >> john: 50 days in captivity, some was spent at a palestinian hospital where there was a surgical repair to her arm, but what happened in the ensuing days after that, we can only imagine, but her situation know, remember we had rebekah goldberg on, whose son was taken hostage as well after having his arm blown off when hamas terrorists were throwing hand grenades into the bomb shelter, looked atted mia and said the fact she got medical attention gives her hope that her son got urgently needed medical attention as well. so, hopefully ultimately everybody will be coming home. we'll see how long it takes. >> we are holding out hope every minute that goes by, john. >> the reality is the terrorism threat has been elevated throughout 2023, but the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of attack against americans in the united states to a whole other level. >> john: fbi director chris wray on october 24th, and now attacks appear to be having a ripple effect worldwide. this morning in germany, authorities arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of planning a possible attack on a christmas market, echos of the truck attack in berlin back in 2016. let's bring in former cia station chief and fox news contributor, dan hoffman. another 29-year-old arrested in germany, and belgium, tunesian man shot soccer fans, and a threat from radicalism or crazy people is a very elevated level, dan. >> yeah, i think it absolutely is. it reminds me a little bit of when isis captured large swaths of territory in syria and iraq, and we saw those terrorist attacks hitting europe at the time. look, hamas launch add brutal terrorist attack against israel, but that was not where they stopped. they also disseminated it on social media deliberately to incite followers worldwide and to raise funds to carry on future terrorist operations. >> john: if hamas is allowed to come through this conflict and survive, both as an administrative body and a military body, what does that portend for the future of what life would be like in israel? >> well, israel cannot allow hamas to enjoy the ungoverned space that they have enjoyed in gaza. if hamas were to be allowed to carry on and continue to exercise dominant control over the gaza strip, israel would have lost the kinetic war, as well as the information war. remember there have been over 10,000 palestinian casualties and hamas is banking on that to sway pro-palestinian populations in egypt and saudi arabia and jordan, and worldwide that director wray is concerned about. just like we did in afghanistan against al-qaeda. >> john: i want to ask you about politics in europe, i think it has a lot to do with intelligence and security. we have seen the rise of right wing populus parties and candidates in european, like italy, hungary, sweden, finland, slovakia, holland, in france. we just -- we need to pause for a second, antony blinken just started speaking in tel aviv. >> humanitarian pauses to facilitate the release of the hostages, surge humanitarian assistance, protection of palestinian civilians. and i said that there were a number of issues that needed to be worked through but that the united states was committed to achieving these goals. today marks the 7th day of the humanitarian pause in gaza, united states worked closely with qatar and egypt to put in place. 7th day hostages have been freed and returning home to their families. significantly more humanitarian assistance is getting into the people of gaza who need it. and the 7th day that civilians in gaza have been able to move to safer areas. i've come again here today to advance a number of goals. our immediate focus is working with our partners to extend the pause so we can continue to get more hostages out of gaza and more assistance in. we share the elation, the relief of the families from more than a dozen countries, including the united states, what have been reunited with their loved ones. and yet, there are scores of families here in israel, united states and around the world whose loved ones continue to be held captive and who are desperate to get them home safely. we will not stop working until we get every hostage back home with their families and loved ones. at the same time, we continue to surge humanitarian assistance to palestinian civilians in gaza. together with the u.n., partners in the region, we have significantly increased the flow of food, water, medicine, to power desalination plants and other critical structure mechanisms have more than doubled the number of trucks getting into gaza but this is still not enough to meet the needs of its people, which is why we continue to work urgently to get more aid in, and to get it in faster. sustaining and increasing the flow of humanitarian aid in particular fuel, re-stocking stores with commercial goods, these are vital to the lives and livelihoods and well-being of that's especially true for the most vulnerable parts of the population, children. the elderly. pregnant women. people with disabilities. and it's even more pressing as winter sets in bringing with it a heightened risk of infectious disease outbreaks. the gift of israel agrees with the imperative of humanitarian assistance and the need to sustain it. prime minister netanyahu made clear that israel intends to resume their military operations against hamas when hamas stops releasing hostages. as we have said from the outset, israel has the right to do everything it can to ensure that the slaughter hamas carried out on october 7th can never be repeated. hamas cannot remain in control of gaza. it cannot retain the capacity to repeat that carnage. that was only underscored by this morning's terrorist attack waiting at a bus stop in jerusalem that killed three israeli civilians and wounded six others including two american citizens. hamas has claimed responsibility for that attack. it called its perpetrators heroic. we mourn those killed, just as we mourn the loss of every innocent civilian life, israeli or palestinian. but as i have already said since i first came here after october 7th, the way israel defends itself matters. it's imperative that israel acts in accordance with international law and the laws of war. even when confronting a terrorist group that respects neither. in my meetings today with the prime minister and senior israeli officials, i made clear before israel resumes major military operations, they must put in place humanitarian protection plans that minimize further casualties of palestinians. that means taking more effective steps to protect the lives of civilians, including by designating areas and places in southern and central gaza where they can be safe and out of the line of fire. it means avoiding further significance displacement of civilians and avoiding damage to life infrastructure like water facilities, life stations and means giving civilians that have been displaced the choice to return to the north as soon as conditions permit. there must be no internal displacement. all of this can be done in a manner that still enabled israel to achieve its objectives. of course, we know that every one of these elements is made more complicated by the fact that hamas imbeds itself with civilianses in and below hospitals, apartment buildings, schools, refugee camps. hamas one of the most sophisticated militaries in the world. its capable of neutralizing the threat posed by hamas and while minimizing harm to innocent women and children and they have an obligation to do so. that is not just the right thing to do, it's also in israel's security interests. the prime minister and members of the war cabinet agreed with the need for this approach. we discussed the details of israel's ongoing planning and i understand the imperative of the united states that the massive los loss of civilians will not be repeated in the south. as i told the prime minister, intent matters, but so does the result. at the same time
