many of biden's old constituents are in full-blown revolt. his numbers are dropping more than his words mid-sentence. biden aproof all is record low 40%. among young people, he's at 31%. on economy, his number is 38. young voters give him abysmal 20% on the handling of the israel-hamas war. trump is up among young voters and 2% overall. this must be a one off, can't be a trend? hardly, this confirming trends we've been seeing for a while. new harvard heritage poll show the birthday boy is in just as much trouble with trump, down by seven points. biden's approval number is jumping to 45. inside the poll on specific questions, it is more bad news for biden. american fears and frustration about crime, that is clear, 63% of those surveyed believe gun ownership is important to protect yourself against attacks. 83 want to crack down on shoplifters. it is impossible to spin the number, the data guys have given up. >> this is the lowest we have measured his job approval rating since he game president. under the age of 35, before either of us were registered. >> laura: of course, biden's most truculent supporters did try their best. >> are these poll numbers part of a biden pattern not to be overreacting to? >> yes, i think there is, laura. plan b is, i conceive of it and think it is realistic is joe biden in the face of more discouraging polls meets with his family over the holidays and decides for a variety of reasons, polls, his age, his health, investigations into himself and hunter biden, he decides not to run. and plan b, probably kamala harris. >> laura: wait. i think my heart just skipped a beat. kamala harris? >> doug: she is more unpopular than he is, i know, laura, this is the democratic party of 2024 and your silence is appropriate under the circumstances we face. >> laura: we'll get back to that. go over the specifics where trump is showing significant gains since october of 2020. up 21% independents, black voters 13%, hispanic voters, 15% and suburban women taking a second look at trump. that type of erosion and add in the youth vote. i kept looking back thinking this can't be true, i don't see how kamala harris comes in and turns that around. she is just a younger version of bad policies that don't work. >> that is right and my party would do well to look beyond kamala harris. if at the 11th hour, so to speak, joe biden steps down, filing dates in a lot of places have passed. responsible for the nomination and election of joe biden, i think will insist kamala harris be the nominee and the presses will be wired for her. gavin newsom is only one who would have outside chance of contesting the nomination. >> laura: and that is why he made the trip to beijing and there to welcome xi, he has a firm fitting on the international stage. janet yellen was asked, prominent cabinet member, treasury secretary, asked about poll numbers and this is what she said. we're making considerable progress in bringing inflation down, but americans do notice higher prices from what they used to be accustom to. i think it is our job to explain to americans what president biden has done to improve the economy. >> laura: they keep thinking it is a messaging problem, doug, the fact of the matter, people are going to the pumps and grocery stores and buy less with the dollars they are learning. janet yellen can redo the message lamely, it will not change that. >> doug: it will not change it, i've said all along as you are saying, laura, to believe they can explain the inflation reduction act which does nothing of the sort is a fool's errand, it will not work. they need to change policy. tighten the southern border once and for all. acknowledge that problem, cut spending, reduce size of government, take steps to reduce the deficit. i don't think it is going to happen in any chance it happens in this election year, but that is what the american people want because improvement you cited is because people are facing economic stress with 20, 25, 30% higher prices due to biden policy of spend, spend, spend during the pandemic and as it was winding down. >> laura: too many republican senators affirming that spending. to the international front, more good news, pop limp is busting out all over whachl is going on? here are recent developments. afd party is growing. finland just formed right-wing government. in spain, they are marching against socialism and farmers in netherland are pushing back against the world economic. and just over the weekend, landslide victory in argentina for melee planning to dismantle socialism. joining me now is victor davis hanson. a few weeks ago when trump lost there was a prediction about the trend going forward and basically said, we don't have the sound bite, populism was over and globalism would catch fire again and nation state days were over. your reaction to what we're seeing. >> well, brexit in 2016 was just first wave and they had counter offensive and got power and we saw progressive socialism, elite globalism and cultural marxism and it gave open border, disunity, cultural issue like trans, three-sex issue and people had enough of it worldwide. the common denominator, it is striking how common they are. people do not like elites who first allegiance and davos, rather than concern of their own citizen. they are never consequence of their own. money and influence protect them from their ideology. they have no common sense, it is critical race theory, critical legal theory, they don't want to appeal to people or don't want to get out and say, these are my agendas, would you vote for me? they think they can maintain it by media, academia, deep state and corporate boardroom and it catches them and that is what we are seeing. >> laura: looks like a slow movement back toward cherishing the nation state, individual countries like individual culture with changes along the way, culture changes, but something is happening and you feel it in europe, as well, with mass influx of mostly islamic refugees changing makeup of sweden, germany, france and so forth. that has not worked, it is a multi cultural disaster. how much of that is playing into the populous resurgence? >> bill: wild story, fbi and cdc getting blasted for dropping the ball after illegal bio-lab was found full of deadly diseases and pathogens and they wonder how the lab was able to exist. it was found in fresno, california. waste eshg radcasion took place last week, pathogens were found labeled hiv and ebola. they found covid-19, tuberculosis, thousands of lab mice. a 62-year-old chinese citizen, wanted fugitive was in charge of the lab. he has ties to the chinese communist party and had stolen intellectual property. how does this chinese national get access to deadly pathogens and set up shop in an illicit lab in california? >> i don't think it is coincidence at all. they said it would never happen again. the thing i say about the american accountability organization, they have effective. multiple nominations we've been able to defeat because they revealed gross things about their past statements and past views. these guys are doing incredibly good work and here is the goal of this, what the irs is trying to do is send a signal if you are doing effective work on behalf of the conservative movement, have your head on swivel and look around your shoulder to make sure the irs is not going to come after you. it is assault on first amendment right. using government to target political opponent as opposed to effectively administer laws of the united states. this is dangerous and we have to call it out and fight against it. >> laura: the 90,000 agents we keep hearing about, a number of efforts to pull back funding on the irs. whatever happened with that? i have people asking me, what is going on with that and i never have a really good answer. >> well, one update, laura, myself and colleague, roger marshall, one of my best friends in the senate, we went to the senate floor and tried to cut 14 billion out of irs funding and mike johnson has been pushing on the house side and every democrats voted to stop it, even moderates. what we are seeing with weaponization of the irs, no democrat is willing to stand up and say enough is enough. if you give the guys money and empower them to target political opponents, you will have a distorted system, lack of justice in this country and that is what we have. we are trying to push back against it, with chuck schumer and democrats in the majority, only so much we can do. that is yet another reason we have to push back against democratic majority in 2024. one final point, i understand everybody looks at this and say conservative is complaining about the irs, this is not left versus right, this is whether we have functional constitutional government in this country. if the irs can go after you because of what you believe and do, we no longer live in a free country. if you think they will not use it against your politics, it is ridiculous, they certainly will. >> laura: this has to be stopped, win the senate back next year. thank you. oral arguments held today in trump's appeal to lift that gag order put on him. details from what happened inside the courtroom in d.c. in moments. sure, he's the 76-year-old guy who still runs marathons, right?
