[laughter] >> does this deserve all of the coverage that we are getting? >> there is an element of republicans being divided. i think there is something more fundamental. it is very easy for people to talk about the party patronage was bad. it's good were in this era of small daughter donors and people speaking to their audiences. but it is bad. we have an incentive structure where all these members of congress are looking for viral moments. a couple weeks ago there was an article about nancy maces handbook being released. she is spending more than one third of her budget on marketing a third of her house office budget. things like showing up with the scarlet letter a. not a student of hawthorne, as far as i can tell. that is because, unfortunately, we have a culture on the hill where politicians get attention for behaving out of line. >> the media is partially to blame because we award that. >> i'm not sure legacy media is to blame because i think that it is, i think it is how they interact with their constituents on social media. how they raise money from people all over the country. the new communities of supporters of these people. >> and i just interjects? the jamaal bowman moment. does that hurt him with the same kind of people? or is it an indication that he will fight the way that i like people to fight? it is not just one side that has this problem, we now have these politicians turning to the small dollar donors. the easiest way is to do something chaotic. >> now we will get to a viral video. chip roy a very conservative congresswoman from texas, a republican, they have not accomplished much of anything. he stood up and gave this speech >> one thing, i want my republican colleagues to give me one thing. one that i can go campaign on and say we did. explain to me one material significant thing the republican majority has done. >> well, i think the frustration there, i have known chip personally for more than 20 years, the frustration is palpable because he was a former staffer in all of these different entities. he is someone who worked for john cornyn, he's been around for a long time. the business of congress is something that is been almost entirely ignored on all the different priorities he has. obviously, the border is a major factor there. again, circling back, there was some hope at least along these conservatives and someone who supported mccarthy in that original deal they cut him and supported them until the end, they hoped they could move on some of these things that they would have some kind of progress it is the business as usual in the same kind of bills they were passing before. >> doesn't chip roy deserve some credit for standing up? >> of course he deserves credit. any politician willing to speak out always deserves credit. i actually am not sure that that moment will translate to democratic talking point wins in the way people may think. it is a little bit hard to understand spirit i think that that moment is a little strange. >> they don't have context. we get seven seconds of that. republicans have done nothing. >> that is true. republican congressman in his own words. i think republicans this week have given democrats a lot of material. >> fair enough. it is not an easy thing to deal. challenged the republicans succumb to the floor. mike johnson avoided a government shutdown. maybe you heard something about this by pushing through another one of these stopgap funding measures. keeping the governor functioning until early next year. is it the same thing that led to kevin mccarthy's ousting? >> it is exactly the same thing. you've got a new coach. he has been here for just seven years. six-seven years. he has not build up the enemies that have been there longer. it is an open question of what he is going to do when he gets out of that honeymoon. and he is facing all the same challenges that mccarthy was facing, republicans are facing generally. having such a slim margin in just one half of the body of congress. >> as with kevin mccarthy, democrats bailed out the new speaker because all but two of them voted yes on the stopgap funding measure. i have a sense of déjà vu. is the press sick of this story? did not get the sky is falling kind of coverage that the crises did. it vanished pretty quickly. >> i think there's a lot more going on now. i think that the conflict, the israel, gaza, hamas is creating a lot of pressure. getting closer to 2024. people are shifting into an orientation around the election. i think the sports med affair or is a good one. this is more like young love and relationships. you cannot make it work and then you realize you are doing all of the behaviors that could have made that previous relationship successful. house republicans in kevin mccarthy is out. and, so, that just gives the media a lot less to recover karma is not met gates friend. >> too soon to have a divorce. of course if there had been a government shutdown it would have competed for the mideast war and so forth. does the media like this because this is an entertainment value? >> a primary where very little has changed. the main story has been ron desantis who looked like a reasonably close second place. we are cheap dates. it does not take much to get us excited. 5% to 8%. this is exciting. it's not that exciting. >> but it's all we got. >> talk that the next debate may only have two candidates. a little bit of talk that trump may jump in. really, of those three, one is still way ahead of the other two >> we do have to keep that in mind. i would be surprised if donald trump showed up. not great for the american public. why the fascination with nikki haley and not ron desantis?
