continuing breaking news coverage of the war in israel on america's late news "fox news @ night". our war coverage begins in moments. there is also breaking news in the death of matthew perry. the cast members of "friends" have issued their first statement on perry's death. we will have that for you. new information about matthew perry's autopsy and questions about his release. we will have dr. joining us for the latest on that. meantime, a live look at gaza sunrise which happens in 56 minutes. israeli prime minister and german netanyahu shows no signs of letting up on hamas, rejecting calls outright for a cease-fire as israeli forces pushed deeper into gaza attacking areas north and east of the main city as they fight to control a major highway in gaza. there are battles underway. alex hogan is live in tel aviv with the latest on what is happening on the ground. alex? >> reporter: trace, the white house says it is hoping to boost humanitarian aid for the civilians caught in the conflict in gaza as the death toll continues to rise. even ate organization say they don't know how much longer they can operate. in the last few days the ies has managed to target and hit about 600 hamas targets. israel's defense minister say there are ground maneuvers has enabled the rescue of a hostage. a soldier is now home. the news is giving hope to loved ones of other hostages like the family of one woman who was at the music festival in southern israel. >> [ speaking in foreign language] >> reporter: it has been weeks but the morning of october seventh keeps replaying for the families of the hostages. >> everywhere i go i see her face. i imagine her taking care of other kids that were abducted as well. >> reporter: the family of the 26-year-old shared with fox the phone call of when she was taken. >> [ speaking in foreign language] >> reporter: after hours of her hiding, they had been certain that she was almost home to them safe until this. >> shouting and screaming and panicking because they were shot. >> reporter: with no answers yet, like so many other families, it's these final seconds of connection they are holding on to. >> [ speaking in foreign language] >> reporter: the family says they were able to trace her phone to gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu in israel promising to continue the effort and exhalation in there to hold them responsible for the attacks on october 7th. >> alex, thank you. a long with the war in gaza, israel is trading firewood two neighbors to the north. we are talking about lebanon and syria. the chief international respondent steve harrigan is live with the latest on that front. steve? >> reporter: that's right, trace. over the past 24 hours more rocket attacks into northern israel coming from hezbollah positions inside lebanon and also from syria. multiple rockets hitting at least seven towns in northern israel. sirens going off in those towns including this one where i am now. people running for shelter when the rockets were coming in. some rockets hit in open areas. others were intercepted. one house was hit, but no one injured in that strike. here is the prime minister. >> we are working to actively deter the northern front and i repeat to hezbollah. you will make the mistake of your life if you decide to fully intervene in the campaign. you will receive a below you cannot even imagine. >> reporter: those counter strikes by israel have been taking plays. we have heard planes go overhead. airstrikes against rand paul hezbollah positions including a military compound in lebanon with those positions where the rockets are coming from as the world continues to watch. this potential northern front in hopes that the fighting will not expand here. trace, back to you. >> steve harrigan live in northern israel. let's bring in cameron hamilton up former navy s.e.a.l. who trained israeli defense several special forces. and a retired navy captain. welcome to both of you. the female idf soldier, 19 years old rescued in gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu said the following. watch. >> our common assessment of not only the cabinet members but also all the security forces in the military is that the ground action actually creates the possibility, not the certainty, but the possibility of getting our hostages out. >> he brings up a debatable point because a lot of families wanted them to wait on this ground incursion, the ground operation, not yet a ground war. he thinks may be going in with idf is the best way to get the hostages out. what do you think? >> right now hamas is holding hostages as basically a form of currency. they will not give it up. there has been talk about doing a trade for all of the hostages for the 6000 palestinians held in custody. that will not work. a lot of those palestinians will go back and fight for hamas. the best scenario quite frankly is if there is any kind of cease-fire it should be for hamas to say if you're going to surrender and give up hostages and weapons and. that will be the way if the hostages will get out of there. either by force or hamas giving them up. >> hamas also released video of three hostages. we are not showing the video addressing an angry message to benjamin netanyahu. it appears that israel is calling this old-school propaganda. what do you make of the release of this video? >> thank you for having me. you are absolutely right. we see a lot of coercion tactics and profound techniques to manipulate people into saying a variety of different things. it's difficult to ascertain clearly how accurate and truthful these hostages are presenting themselves. we have to recognize they are in a nearly catastrophic scenario if they say something wrong or don't play the game they are being lured on or if they are given special treatment and don't respond properly. they will be retaliated against. it is challenging for us to take the statements presented in some of these videos accurately. >> i think it's pretty clear that the idf is expanding its ground operation. not yet calling it a groundwork. where careful of that because it's a ground incursion and it gets bigger and bigger. listen, this is not the storm of normandy park it's not all at wants proposition. they have to build up and ready the battlefield. and so forth. there are hundreds of israeli casualties and heavy fighting. this thing looks to be getting better. fair assessment? >> absolutely. hamas is setting up beachheads within gaza and hopefully they will come to the sea. what will happen is the small forces are essentially holding territory. they've gone in and taken out hamas terrorists and other minefields and then the larger force will pass through these beachheads. then you will see them enter into urban territory where the real dangerous and deadly combat will begin. they are taking a little bit more of a methodical approach. hopefully they come in from both land borders to hook up and isolate hamas. >> you are saying come pictures of gaza. i want to put this map up. this is the attacks on u.s. forces. there are 24 of these attacks. mostly all in iraq and syria. is another response coming from the united states and should it? >> ultimately what we have to do is show with strength and deterrence so that attacks such as these are not something to be pursued by other groups. it's a difficult balance to strike. on one hand that is not our conflict. it's the israelis conflict to mitigate with the region. on the other hand we are here to show robust military support. what we've seen in the previous administration was a stronger tone and rhetoric so that our enemies if they were considering engaging u.s. forces they understood that the reprisal for such an action would be swift and ruthless. my concern now is that many in military leadership as well as the resolve of the current administration does not project that same degree of seriousness. ultimately we are putting american troops potentially at greater risk. >> a lot of people share that concern. thank you both. the level of anti-semitism on u.s. college campuses comes as a shock to many. but perhaps more surprising is how college administrators have responded. film allusion is live with the threats as well as the response. >> reporter: blatant anti-semitism continues to rear its ugly head every single day. we are not just talking students. now we have a group of professors at columbia university who are backing up students who they say support hamas. more than 100 columbia professor signed a letter today defending students who support what they call hamas military action in israel on october 7th rather then terrorist attacks which is what it should be called dark the professors called on school administrators to protect those students from, quote, "disturbing verb nations on campus. jewish students on campus tell fox news they are not doing enough to fight anti-semitism and they feel unsafe on campus. >> my jewish sisters and brothers and i are on the receiving end of death threats from our peers. undergraduates who have filed reports about these incidents have been left with no emotional support, no feedback and no consequences for the perpetrators of these hateful actions. hate is what people on our college campus feel towards us as we walked by. simply because we are jewish. >> meanwhile at cornell university the fbi is investigating after somebody posted on lines that jewish students on campus should be killed. new york's governor was at cornell calling for an investigation and pledging support for jewish students. >> i want them to know they are not alone. no one should be afraid to walk from their dorm or dining hall to a classroom. that is a basic right. >> pro- palestinian support is breaking out on city streets as well. hundreds were arrested at grand central station after group demanding a cease-fire jammed into grand central blocking it during rush hour. today the white house said there is no place for anti-semitism on college campuses but declined to call anti-semitic protesters extremists while she was pressed by our colleague. >> thank you. let's bring in the director of outreach and nicholas a fellow at campus reforms higher education fellowship. thank you for coming on. jill, i want to play some sound from one columbia student a tulane student and cornell university student. watch. >> i was once proud to say i attended columbia law school and proud to one day say i will be an alumni of this institution. but no more. i am embarrassed. >> there is no tiptoeing around the fact that what hamas did his evil. there is no defense for terrorism. these protests are not pro- palestinian. they are anti-jewish and anti- israel. >> our initial reaction was absolute fear. when posts are coming up on my phone about how people want to kill me and want to bomb my home and our home as a jewish community. it is terrifying. >> i just came back from israel. i am stunned by the amount of shock and hate. not even shocked. i am stunned by the amount of hate and fear on college campuses in the united states. >> i do not happen to be a jewish mother. i'm a christian mother. but i am terrified about what i have been seeing on social media. that was the first time i ever saw that sound that you played and tears here's phil.my i's. this is very serious. i am not shocked, though. i am not shocked because this is what we have been shouting about and warning about for years at prager you. marxism has infiltrated our colleges. it has infiltrated our high schools and now our elementary schools. the past few decades has resulted in students defending violence against all facts, defending terrorist organizations like hamas on campus. this is the result of our failed and hijacked education system. >> i want to play some sound from pro- palestinian protesters. look. >> you can shut down a chapter but not us as individuals. >> young people do not support the genocide in palestine and do not support the occupation of palestine. >> do they realize when they are saying river to the sea they are calling for the extermination of israelis? >> some do and some don't. it's an education system that is now breeding ignorance. unfortunately we have been warning about this since 2009 that we are seeing increased radicalization. consider that most students don't even know the basic facts of the holocaust. only 13% can identify aspects of american history including world war ii. now you have school boards talking about doing away with proficiency standards when it comes to reading, writing and math to get a high school diploma which will not work well. it makes it easy to radicalize on college campuses. these students are calling for a second holocaust and we need to reassess the education system and bring it back to the sense of nationhood that it was built upon. >> i want to get you both on this. do we have this harvard poll to put up on the screen? this shocked me. this is the harvard harris poll. we do not have it. but it showed that 52% are in favor of israel and 48% are not. there it is. finally. 48%. with the margin of error this is a dead heat. this is a 5050 proposition. >> it is evidence of how severely our students and young learners have been brainwashed again against all facts and all reason. they have been brainwashed through 1st defending violence with blm protest. it's one little group that feels as though they are oppressed and violence is absolutely okay. it is not okay. our children have been brainwashed to feel that way. what we are seeing on college campuses is a result of that. >> nicholas, the same people that say words are violence are literally in favor of exterminating, eradicating the jewish population. final thoughts. >> this is a result of the anti-semitism and anti- western civilization we have seen in our culture being pushed in the education system. we have to get back to the assimilation process. assimilation is what is essential. >> nicholas jordano and jill good to have you on. former president trump is still way up in the polls for the 2020202024 presidential race. there is a brand-new battle underway for second place. the senior national correspondent kevin corke is live in d.c. with who is gaining ground and giving ground. >> a brand-new iowa poll shows 43% of likely republican caucus goers back former president donald trump. that is up a point from august. proof that no matter how many court cuts political opponents try to/in with he remains resilient and very popular among the gop base. however in a bit of a surprise former un ambassador and south carolina governor nikki haley has moved into a tie for second. a distant second. haley and florida governor ron desantis are neck and neck at 16% according to that survey. that's a 10-point jump for haley who was at 6% back in august. it's a three-point slide for desantis who is at 19 just a couple months ago. a haley campaign spokesperson tells "fox news tonight" that it is, quote, "time to start talking about a two-person race. one man and one woman. we will see. in fact, haley is not just second in iowa, she is also second in new hampshire and in south carolina according to the latest surveys. again, quite a bit of distance from the former president. >> i have always been the underdog. i enjoy that. it's what makes me scrappy. but no one is going to outwork me in this race. no one is going to outsmart me in this race. >> still a long way to go before it's time to vote. i should add this. adding to the potential uncertainty of the coming iowa caucuses, this is a fascinating number. a majority of likely caucus voters, 54%, say they could still be persuaded to change their first choice picks. but right now it is former president by a longshot. >> kevin corke, we will get back to in moments. let's bring in spencer brown. and former chief of staff to congressman ken buck. welcome to you both. i want to put this back up. the pole, just so everybody is clear on who is leading and who is not. this is the des moines register nbc poll. the former president at 43%. desantis and nikki haley 16%. even if it was just trump versus desantis or trump versus haley, spencer, you have very little chance with two and a half months to the iowa caucuses of overtaking the former president. >> that is sort of a political lifetime. that much time is a lot. so is the former president's lead. even though 54% of people might be able to convince that their first choice is not actually their first choice, there is a lot of work to be done. other republicans have been chasing this momentum. fewer have done that and have dropped out. nikki haley is showing the ability to build momentum. i'm sure her team is looking to capitalize on that in the third debate next week and continue to do it because she has a lot of ground to make up if she is going to seriously challenge trump. >> speaking of nikki haley, someone will finish second in iowa. they say in the olympics silver may be silver but it is still second but could easily give that individual momentum to attract republicans who are not sold on a third trump nomination and are looking for a candidate to consolidate the field. what do you think about that? >> listen, i think this has become a never trumper dream. it is deranged. number one president trump is up 50 points nationally and up 27 and iowa and 30 and south carolina and 30 in nevada. this raisi is running away with. mike pence just dropped out of the race. look at this year from now. the autopsy autopsy of every single republican candidate who challenged president trump. they thought there is a way to beat him but there isn't. he has become invincible. even with four indictments he has gone up in the polls and it hasn't hurt him in the general election. a bloomberg pole came out last week. he is up four points on joe biden in nevada, michigan and ohio. these are key states to winning back the white house. nikki haley is competing and down 27 points. president trump is running away with this. >> this is the vivek ramaswamy. he said this about israel minding its own business. watch. >> my message is clear. give an ultimatum to iran. you stay out and we stay out. i am looking after making sure that our americans are brought out of harm's way. >> i have about 15 seconds for each of you. he got booed a little bit speaking to some jewish republicans. >> he is definitely differentiating himself from other republican candidates. i don't think in a way that republicans were hoping to see. it will end up being one of those things that nikki haley wants to take him to task on the debate stage. >> your final thoughts? >> real quick. i think the comments by vivek ramaswamy doesn't understand foreign policy. a mosses an evil terrorist group. the u.s. has cysts today with israel. going forward in 2024 there is no greater person than president trump. the most president we have had. that will show going into 2024. >> they do like him. coming up the latest developments in israel's war on hamas. and one of america's favorite friends died over the weekend. the others have issued a first statement. there are new questions about matthew perry's autopsy and who might be facing liability. we will have that coming up next. ubrelvy is another option, it quickly eliminates migraine pain. do not take with strong cyp3a4 inhibitors. allergic reactions to ubrelvy can happen. most common side effects were nausea and sleepiness. ask about ubrelvy. oh, hello! hi! do you know that every load of laundry could be worth as much as $300? really? and your clothes just keep getting more damaged the more times you wash them. downy protects fibers, doing more than detergent alone. see? this one looks brand new. saves me money? i'm starting to like downy. downy saves loads. the start of the long-running tv show "friends" matthew perry past away at age 54. research scientists joins us as we look at the cause of death. criminal defense attorney ex
