today. secretary of state antony blinken meeting with the chinese counterpart and then china's foreign minister has a sit-down with president biden. we're monitoring that today. first, however, want to get to this now. the center of israel and its commercial capital under attack again. a rocket fired out of gaza slamming into an apartment building in tel aviv. that's where we start. good morning, everybody. it's friday. you've almost made it, america. i'm bill hemmer. welcome back, aishah in washington. >> aishah: i'm in for dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." let's get right to it. the u.s. retaliating carrying out air strikes against iranian-linked sites in syria after drone and rocket attacks against america forces there and iraq. israeli tanks and troops briefly enter gaza in a second raid ahead of a larger ground invasion. now time could be of the essence. >> i think it needs to be immediate. they need to understand what is going on in israel is going on in israel. you won't attack our u.s. troops. they need to be protected. our diplomat ickx facilities need to be protected. if you let it go on you'll see another benghazi if you aren't careful. >> let's go to mike tobin. >> u.s. war planes have struck in the region. two bases in syria. to the east of syria near iraqi border, bases operated by the iranian revolutionary guard in response to the menacing attacks to u.s. forces in the region. 19 attacks from drones and missiles resulting in 21 injuries of u.s. forces. there was a fatality of a u.s. contractor scrambling to safety and suffered a heart attack. lloyd austin was deliberate in pointing out it does not represent a shift in u.s. policy as it relates to the israel/hamas wars. as it relates to that war, israeli forces have been busy, something we haven't seen yet is an incursion by the israeli navy. part of the hamas military structure supported by aircraft and ships at sea as the forces went on ground. they came backrest cued by ships at sea and taken away about naval vessels. incursion on the ground the second night in a row that we have seen israeli forces go in on the ground. one of the things we know about this particular incursion is they were accompanied by combat engineers who helped to support whatever is going on on the ground there. speaking to the notion that this is preparation for the looming ground invasion. there was a rocket. we've seen several long-range rocket launch eaves today out of gaza. one got through and hit an apartment building in tel aviv. since that time at the border of the gaza strip we've noticed artillery fire has picked up. >> bill: mike tobin, long day there. back with you with developments as they happen. thank you. >> aishah: it is day three in the manhunt for the suspect in the maine mass shantey. a raid on robert card's home last night. it ended with no arrests and no sign of him. the 40-year-old army reservist is the prime suspect right now in the shooting spree that killed at least 18 people and hurt more than a dozen others. lawrence jones is live in lewiston, maine with the latest from the ground. good to see you. >> lawrence: how are you doing? i've been talking with sources over the night. as you know the bortek unit is on the ground. they hunt fugitives and swat teams. this guy has military training and marksman and knows how to use a weapon. high power weapons as well. not something your everyday police officer will have the vest equipped with that level three vest to protect them. a lot of these swat teams are going door-to-door of known places where he could be or residence that he owns. a tough investigation. praying for the law enforcement officers going door-to-door. >> next time tried and lost his life trying to help his friends and his customers and standing up and being a man that he felt he had to be. >> lawrence: that's my interview earlier with the dad. it's unbelievable what he did. his son actually went into harm's way. not only did he protect the folks in this restaurant but the employees as well. they are saying that he may have delayed the shooter and got that shooter out of there. aishah. >> aishah: thank you so much. keep us updated if you find out anything more. >> bill: joey jones is a retired bomb technician and fox news contributor. you have been watching this from afar. i want to tap into your perspective what we are learning from the family. hearing voices in his ear over the past six months or a year. hearing aids attached to them as well. made threats against people on his own base over the summer. spent two weeks in a mental hospital. i don't know where he went after that but it sure seems like the ball was dropped somewhere, joey. how do you try to piece this together? >> this is really tough situation especially for people like his family who from what i've read tried their best to report local law enforcement and army. saying we need to get him help and tragic for the people murdered by this man. whatever his reasoning or led him there, they are the victims and we care so much about them. listen, i served in the military. i spoke to a lieutenant colonel in the air force with a reserve unit locally yesterday. there isn't -- when it comes to mental health. this mandated or even common. that might be a problem or may not. we have a balance between your constitutional rights as an individual and what is best for the public interest. as much as i love to advocate for the second amendment, i think it is the problem that needs to be addressed rather than how to limit the rights of law abiding sane individuals. how do we pinpoint and attack issues like this. look at every mass shooter over the last several years. how many weren't suffering from mental health issues? very few. i think that commonality is really important. >> aishah: this was planned so well. i want to talk about this guy's skill level if we can pull out the full screen showing his military record. sergeant first class, petroleum supply specialist in the army reserve. no combat deployments but received a couple awards for his service. you and i have been talking about his skillset that he might be using to avert authorities. what does he know and what does he not know that could make this a tougher job for local law enforcement? >> i really want to push back on the public's perception that it is a jason born character who had severe or extensive training in the military to avert police. there is nothing that has been told about him that proves that to be the case. i'm not saying that isn't the case. he could have gone to training schools that an officer has the opportunity to go to. he didn't have pre-deployment combat training or infantry training. very basic skills training to do the job he did. that's what i know for a fact. if he had anything beyond that they aren't saying. the reason why i bring that up. he lives in maine. maine is a wilderness, mostly untamed wilderness under snow for months out of the year. the people there hunt bear and moose almost predators -- a bear is a predator. lifestyle of an outdoorsman in maine is more applicable to what this man can do to avert police than any of the army training. i'm not belittling or talking down what the service trains but this belief that because someone served in the military they have a supernatural ability to avert police and go on the run simply isn't true. you can learn more on the internet or in a gun club when it comes to surviving in the wilderness and hunting and being stealthy than you can in basic training. i want to calm people a little bit in thinking that anyone who served in the military might have gone to combat and had ptsd is a super soldier that can wreak havoc and not proven true by any of the incidents in the country. i want to make sure people understand that. serving as a reservist you are a citizen soldier. you spend more time in society than on base and learn as much being an outdoorsman when it comes to this situation. it's important for people to understand. >> bill: we are in content yesterday and you were talking about the title of a firearms specialist described to us. explain to our audience what that might mean? >> firearms instructor. i don't know if that's certified by an organization like the national rifle association or if he took an online course and was a firearms instructor at a local gun range. you can see video after video of a certified firearms instructor doing dumb things. i only bring that up. i don't want an incident like this and these labels slapped so quickly to demonize and stoke fear in a community of people. whether or not he is a well-trained marksman relies more on what he has done as a civilian on his own time than in the military or even obtaining a very general certain i have indicate that says firearms instructor. he went into a building for very, very vulnerable targets and took advantage of that situation with a weapon. that is something you don't have to be any type of expert to do. we saw it over and over again, we've seen it. it is a problem that needs to be fixed. places need to be fortified and people need to be vigilant but very inexperienced people do similar things. i just want people to understand what these terms mean, why they are or not applicable. right now he is averting police in maine. the chances are the fact that he spent so much time outdoors is why he is able to do that. not because of any extensive firearms training or time in the army. that's important. more than 100 million people own guns. more than 20 million a.r.s in the country, tens of millions of people that enjoy the outdoors. one person going absolutely crazy does not demonize the subsets of people or make those sk skillsets negative for our society. >> do we like the fact he is on u.s. soil? no. do we hope others of the u.n. take the opportunity to ask tough questions of him and what his country is doing? >> iran's foreign minister came to new york city and then he went on to deliver a fiery speech against the u.s. at the united nations. should he have been here in the first place especially with ties to hamas? >> aishah: anti-seam advertiseing spreading on campuses across the country and now lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are taking action. republican senator and presidential candidate tim scott will join us next. >> bill: you can add another primary challenger to president biden. we'll tell you all about him and what's about to happen in 45 minutes. >> i think it's time for a new generation and time to pass the torch. i say now. i think the time is now. i think four years from now it might be too late. might be too late. there's challenges, and i love overcoming challenges. ♪ when better money habits® content first started coming out, it expanded what i could do for special olympics athletes with developmental needs. thousands of bank of america employees like scott spend countless hours volunteering to teach people how to reach their financial goals. it felt good. it felt like i could take on the whole world. this is spring semester at over 13,000 us school districts, which have become top targets for ransomware attacks. but there's never been a reported ransomware attack on a chromebook. which is why thousands of schools like the fairfield-suisun unified school district switched to google tools for education. so they can focus on teaching and 22,000 students can focus on learning, knowing that their data is secure.
