we are in jerusalem. it is day 21 of the war between israel and hamas. we are covering breaking news. we were notified about an our ago that the united states has struck targets, airstrikes in syria. what they are saying is the two facilities were near abu come all syria. according to a senior u.s. defense official they say one was a weapons storage facility and the other was an ammo storage area. these are in syria, not iran. the strike back, of course, does not have anything to do the administration says with what is happening between israel and hamas. what it has to do with is the proxy groups of iran targeting u.s. forces at these military installations in syria and iraq. there have been 16 of these attacks in the last eight days. in those attacks at least 21 servicemembers were wounded in some capacity. most of them were minor, but some of those are temporary brain injuries. that is a big concern. today, the united states struck back. our or two of our breaking news coverage. let's begin with lucas tomlinson live in tel aviv. when you hear about the targets that the u.s. military went after today, what do you think of the strategy and the targets themselves? >> reporter: the u.s. no doubt wanted a proportional response which is why the target was selected at abu come all. that's a border town in eastern syria along the border of iraq. it is where isis made its last stand a few years ago. it is largely ungoverned space. in terms of the weapons used you had f-16 flying out of the squadron from the new jersey national guard. they just arrived in the region not too long ago. you want to use those jets as opposed to launching a tomahawk cruise initial as you can see from the map. you can shoot tomahawk cruise missiles from the red sea flying over saudi arabia and jordan and iraq. you generally have to have permission from those countries to do that. if the mediterranean were to shoot tomahawk she would also have potential overflight issues over lebanon. that could anger hezbollah on the ground. what the u.s. wanted was a proportional response and why death has always been a redline for the united states. not that the u.s. contractor died of a heart attack while sheltering in place in iraq. there is no question moves to strike back were getting ginned up at the white house. after 16 attacks on u.s. forces in the last 10 days, pressure was building to respond, trace. >> lucas, i want to quickly get your take because i know you study this stuff and you are a student of military warfare. do you think that when you go or if jennifer goes to this and we should have her in the next 10 or 12 minutes, this pentagon briefing, what is the focus from the pentagon's point of few and what is the focus of your correspondent? in that meeting what are you trying to glean for us? >> reporter: what was notable is at the pentagon right now is blaming iran for these attacks. they are not hiding that. we just heard from jennifer saying that iran's fingers are all over this according to senior u.s. military officials on this background call with pentagon reporters. they are placing the blame on iran. after 16 attacks on u.s. troops over the last 10 days, like i said, death has always been a redline for the united states. after the contractor died the pressure was there. it is notable the pentagon and white house are going out of their way to try to separate this strike from the ongoing israeli hamas wore. they want to keep these things separate. that is why israeli officials say u.s. forces are needed in the region. that's why the antiballistic missile systems are going in. that's why the eisenhower striker is going and. ike is still a few days out from gibraltar. more forces need to come in the region. they want that to be a check on iran. that's where the u.s. is needed critically. that's where israeli officials have been telling us on the ground the last 20 days of the war. israeli official said they can handle the war against hamas and hezbollah but they need u.s. forces as a block to iran. >> lastly lucas, you mentioned that iranian fingerprints are all over this reported by jennifer griffin. according to jennifer the u.s. did not--i asked this question of her earlier and they said everyone would be in the loop. the u.s. did not inform israel of the u.s. airstrikes in syria. do you find that surprising? >> reporter: i don't find that surprising at all because what's again you saw the statement by defense secretary lloyd austin. they want the strikes and this part of the conflict to be separate and distinct from the war between israel and hamas. tricky to do, no question they are related. the u.s. wants to make this about defending its people. after the u.s. contractor was killed recently the pressure was there for the u.s. to strike back. that is the redline. it is called self defense. we heard it from secretary of state antony blinken. you talk about defending u.s. troops and that includes contractors. that american was killed and the pressure is there. a proportional response. when you hit an ammo dump in eastern syria, right now it's about 6:00 a.m. here. they probably wouldn't likely have a lot of personnel at that ammo dump at 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. besides a security guard sitting there, he will not be killing personnel. you will send a message. this is certainly a message you are destroying the ammunition that could potentially be used against u.s. troops. it's a proportion response. syria is a target. these are largely ungoverned spaces in syria. >> proportional statement but a bold statement nonetheless. we will get back to you as you get more in information. let's bring in former navy s.e.a.l. who trained with israel defense forces, cameron hamilton. great to have you on here. we have been talking to you for the past several nights and what is happening in the war. you are well versed in this area and well-versed on the war. the u.s. striking syria, your thoughts on that? the ammunition area, just so we are clear on this, was an ammunition area and a weapons storage area. cameron? >> thanks for having me again. unfortunately this is a growing escalation in the region. most of us stand unified in solidarity with israel. we don't want to see this conflict ramp up. as a result the united states has brought in a lot of forces as a deterrent to keep other national and state out of the conflict as we see now. american forces have been targeted. there is a perceived sense of weakness. many different organizations within the region such as what we are finding within southern syria as well as other locations are targeting american forces because they believe they are able to pressure us and distract us from being able to provide aid and support to israel. what we see here is likely a deterrent. a very strong deterrent to critical infrastructure such as ammunition and things that would be used to target either the israelis or american personnel in the region. >> what do you think iran's response to this is? >> that's a complicated question. ultimately what we see here with iran is they keep the fisa elsewhere so the focus could not be on tehran. they barely have control of their own nation. the secretary of that region are about to unravel. the only thing that can unify much of this region under a common cause would be an all out war against israel and perhaps the united states. that's what i believe iran is trying to push for. i think the environment of what we see with this administration is one that projects weakness and instability in the region. therefore i think iran's goal is to prop up these lone wolf actors and/or proxy organizations that are sponsored by them to really wreak havoc in the region in a way that has some degree of plausible deniability. in reality all the intelligence we are seeing very clearly shows the groups aligned with radical extremism from iran. >> standby. we will get some breaking news. breaking news former chief national security correspondent jennifer griffin who just came out of this meeting with pentagon officials. jen, what have we learned? >> reporter: what we learned is a pair of u.s. f-16s that carried out the strikes on two irgcn affiliated facilities. one was a weapons depot, another an ammunition facility where ammunition was being stored for those munitions that were being used to fire at u.s. bases in the past week. there are about 19 attacks so far against u.s. forces. that's the number we were given by a senior u.s. defense official just moments ago. it was two f-16s. there is no casualty figure that has been given in terms of any individuals who were at those bases. but there were, we are told, individuals affiliated with the irgcn proxy forces who were at the facilities earlier today. that according to a senior military official. the facilities were located near albo cabal in the southeastern part of syria near the iraqi border. most of these attacks in the last week were at bases inside iraq. u.s. bases inside iraq. so these facilities we don't have much in terms of bomb damage assessment. it was two f-16s that carried out the strikes earlier tonight. trace? >> did they talk at all about reaction? did they talk about further responses if the reaction is not what they expect? >> reporter: they absolutely, both the senior at military official as the defense official said that if teheran does not get the message that there would be further strikes. they are hoping that iran would have gotten the message and delivered that message to it's proxy forces. but the senior military official who was on the senior defensive end so that was on the call just moments ago with pentagon reporters said that iran's fingerprints are all over these attacks on u.s. bases. this is the most direct that i have ever heard the pentagon and any u.s. administration in terms of pointing to iran's involvement in these proxy attacks on u.s. forces. it's a very significant escalation in terms of rhetoric. but they are hoping to de-escalate by carrying out the strikes. they called them discrete precision strikes. they did say that if iran does not get the message, that there will be more to come. they were very clear that they want this to be seen as distinct from the israel-hamas conflict. israel was not informed in advance and this is separate from that conflicts conflict. this is simply a reaction to the targeting and attacks on u.s. forces, trace. i also want to read from the statement earlier. i think we have full screens now from the statement that defense secretary lloyd austin put out earlier tonight after the strikes took place. one says, this with the important part to me, quote, "the united states does not seek conflict and has no intention nor desire to engage in further hostilities. but these iranian backed attacks against u.s. forces are unacceptable and must stop. iran wants to hide its hands and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. we will not let them. that is from lloyd austin policy statement earlier tonight. he added that they will not hesitate to strike again if iranian proxies continue threatening u.s. troops. , quote, "they are separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas and do not constitute a shift in our approach to the israel-hamas conflict. we continue to urge all state and nonstate entities not to take action that would escalate into a broader regional conflict. that from lloyd austin's statement earlier tonight. >> i want to pick your brain. people forget that you stood where i am standing for many years for fox news channel as the israeli bureau correspondent. you know the middle east better than anybody. i am curious. when you talk about the administration telling iran to tell their proxies to stand down, is there a direct connection between iran and the proxies? are there some wildcards in these proxies that could fire off more attacks as a result of this u.s. strike tonight without iran's approval? or is that deemed bad behavior from iran? >> reporter: from my experience, and you remember i was based in israel from 1999 to 2007. we covered the last time there was a major conflict between hezbollah and israel in 2006. yes, there is a connection and these proxy groups do take their orders from the irgc generals and from iran itself. but we also know they are not always the most disciplined law. there could be somebody that takes matters into their own hands and fires a rocket when they are not supposed to. but for the most part, i will say that hezbollah as well as these proxies that are fighting inside syria, they tend to be more disciplined than even some of the groups we have seen in gaza where there is sometimes a competition between hamas and islamic jihad or the martyrs brigades. that's where you start to get sometimes unruly behavior where they are not listening, for instance, to iran. it will be very interesting to see. i think from officials i have spoken to, they do expect the iranian proxies to perhaps fire again on u.s. bases. they expect to probably have to go back and deliver another message. they are trying. again, this is low on the escalation ladder because they recognize this can escalate very quickly and they want to contain this. they are hoping iran gets the message. but they do not want this link to the israel-hamas conflict. i'm not sure how that will go down in the middle east. they are trying to keep it distinct from the israel-hamas conflict. >> i'd like to get your take on the northern israel border. i remember you and i in 2006 on top of that building doing fox report as the rockets were going around us. i was shaking but you were cool as a cucumber. are you worried like steve is worried. are you worried about this thing, hezbollah coming in and firing and escalating they are firing at northern israel? >> reporter: my understanding based on people i have spoken to and the latest intelligence is that hezbollah does not want to get into a full-blown war with israel. what you have been seeing, however, his little pinprick strikes and rocket attacks by hezbollah to show solidarity with the palestinians and to show hamas and the rest of the region they are not sitting this out. but since you and i were there in 2006, hezbollah has more than 100,000 medium-range and perhaps even some long-range rockets and missiles that have been placed there by the irgc with the help of iran. they have a large missile arsenal. it will be very significant if they do decide to get involved. it will be much more than what we have seen in recent days. i believe we will not know whether hezbollah wants to get involved until we see the reaction when and if, mostly when, the israel the ground incursion into gaza begins. that is when all eyes will be on the northern front. it could be that the plan all along was to wait until israel goes into gaza and to try to then stretch the israeli military by firing on the northern part. as of now hezbollah has made some pinprick kind of attempts to challenge israel. but it's not what they are capable of. they have more than 100,000 missiles stored up there in southern lebanon. >> jennifer griffin, exceptional reporting as always. i appreciate it. if you get more news, let us know and we will bring you back on. we will go to army lieutenant colonel brian davis. we are live here on set in jerusalem. jennifer griffin was just talking about the ground war. not sure if you heard her talking about the ground war. hezbollah will kind of decide their next move based on israel does in the ground war. you believe what happened tonight with the united states striking targets in syria might play into that time? >> obviously this is the eyes of iran, whether they view this as an escalatory move with their control of hamas. the wall street journal has reported that israel was holding back on its invasion in part because they wanted the united states to set up the patriot missile defense system at those bases to protect our troops in case of more attacks that they were expecting once the ground invasion began. in my mind, they don't attack the united states if those defense systems weren't in place. obvious a thinking iran would strike back. that could tell us something about the fact that the defense systems are in place. the ground invasion could be closer. the second thing i am thinking about are the 224 hostages. does this change the terms of the negotiations? in the last 24 hours we have heard from a senior qatari and official saying they were getting closer. he said he was hopeful in the next couple of days that there could be a moment where all the hostages could be released. but he warned there should not and cannot be any escalation. do the iranian see this, trace, as an escalatory move where they say we will pull off negotiations? the people at the table in this negotiation aren't hamas controlled by iran. do these terms change on the ground with these hostages? >> it's interesting because we spent the day with a family, the mother and father of a hostage. he is 23 years old. he lost part of his arm when he was taken hostage by a grenade. his best friend was killed. they have video of him. this is video that came from the hamas body cameras. they have video of him being loaded onto a truck and driven into gaza. it has been 21 days and they have zero information about him. what they said to me is there not political. they don't want to get involved in any politics. what would you? i want to play some sound in a bit. i asked them would you be fine, would you recommend that the israeli army wait a little bit before this ground invasion is launched just to give diplomacy a chance to try to get some of these hostages out? it sounds like if you listen to the government of cutter they believe they are close to getting not one, two or three, but dozens out. >> at the same time we know they are having conversations with the united states and cutter about hamas political infrastructure and. the main office in the capitol will eventually be moved. this is part of the conversation. you have egypt, qatar and hamas. i am wondering off of the strikes does iran put pressure to negotiating terms change. iran said they would like to see the release of 6000 palestinian prisoners. does that number go up? is there a nonstarter. these questions of the 224 hostages with 10 americans will be thinking about that now. >> these 220 hostages upped the number today. these 220 or 230 hostages. the numbers keep changing. four have been released. the numbers for some reason keep climbing. these 200 plus hostages come from 40 different countries. it's not just the united states. is not just israel. it's not just a few countries involved in this. there are 40 countries that want to have some agency in what happens to people from their country. i have about 30 seconds and we will take a break. >> the hostage families are going through hell right now. they are on the brink and on the edge. they made the trip to the united states capitol hill to put pressure on the united states. they say it's the u.s. that needs to get this done. that is top-of-the-line for these families of many israelis who are playing for those hostages. to make the families i spoke to went to the united nations. the more we can get the word out, the more chance we have and seeing our son alive again. we will continue breaking news coverage after the break. america strikes targets in syria. next, "fox news at night". yes, just hurry. hmm. it must be delicious. delectables lickable treat. why didn't we do this last year? united states in the middle east has struck back at syria, firing airstrikes at an ammunition area and a weapons area in syria. we are still waiting for the repercussions of that. we will have live, breaking coverage as it comes into us. meanwhile in the united states it appears one of the largest manhunt in the history of the state of maine is now back on. several hours tonight it look like police had found their man with numerous law enforcement vehicles surrounding the family compound of robert card in bowdoin, tran main. there was a series of explosions tonight. they were gunshots or flashbangs. police began yelling to come out with your hands up. nobody came out. now there are reports that the police went into the property and found nothing. 40-year-old robert card remains on the run accused of opening fire in a bowling alley in lewiston, maine and then driving 4 miles an opening fire in a pool hall. in all 18 people were killed and 13 others wounded. the story we broke on this network last night in the prime suspect could be anywhere. molly line has been covering breaking news all night. she is live in lewiston, maine with the very latest on this. molly? >> reporter: trace, more than 24 hours later the manhunt continues. you summed it up nicely. there was a lot of activity earlier on in the evening. just a matter of hours ago focused on the hometown of this suspect where robert card lived and where his family lived. they have a number of structures in one particular area on meadows road. when you talked about those flashbangs and the amount of activity in that area, it appears that they were essentially ensuring that if anyone was in those buildings they would work to push that version out. specifically they are looking for robert card. the state police specifically saying that the announcements that were being made over a loudspeaker asking someone to come out with their hands work and speaking specifically to robert. they called that a standard search warrant announcement. they were executing the warrant to ensure the safety of all involved. it's unknown whether robert card or at the time they didn't know if robert card was in any of the properties. he ultimately did not come out and the search was performed. he has not been found. the flash bangs, the same sort of effort underway. that was to potentially draw card out. it's worth noting tonight that the coast guard has become involved in this broader investigation. they were up in sky alert at boothbay harbor. the subaru found in lisbon that we have been found close to a dock. there is concern that he was into fishing and knew about boats. there is a lot of water and main. you know how deeply forest did the state of maine is. they are also a lot of waterways and lakes. you cannot forget the beautiful ocean out here to the side. last night the early information coming in from internal law enforcement bulletins. some of that has been confirmed. his military background, his proficiency with weapons and here we are in the dark of night. the search continues and he has yet to be found. armed and dangerous. people are still on edge and a lot of people are grieving. there are still folks and hospitals fighting for their lives. back to you. >> that's an awful story. let's bring in former fbi special agent nicole parker and criminal defense attorney vic. nicole, you look at this. they thought they had them surrounded in the house. there was nobody in there. he could be in the ocean or the woods or anywhere. it appears he is a resourceful person. >> he is extremely dangerous. he is highly trained with military background. he is trained to kill. he is proven that he will kill. he is trained to evade enemy combatants. i think its important to note that what was occurring earlier according to the maine state police is that they were executing a search warrant. when law enforcement is going into a home or structure law enforcement safety is number one. that would make sure sense that they did a surround callout not knowing if he was inside or not. they surround the premise and called him out. there was no one that came out. they have to clear the structure before they can execute the search warrant. he is extremely dangerous and highly trained. he has proven that he has killed 18 individuals. he has no limits and his mental history is very dangerous. >> right now he is for all intents and purposes a caged animal and dangerous. the mental health concerns has been a big topic all day. robert card clearly had mental health concerns because he self-reported to the army reserve saying i have these visions of killing people. trend maine does not have a red flag law but has a flag law. one would assume that it should work. it seems to me that this person somehow fell through the cracks. >> that is right. to be sure you pointed out the difference between a red flag and yellow flag law. let's be clear. a yellow flag requires that law enforcement takes him into custody and then only after a psychological evaluation can that person be further detained. and then of course the firearm stripped away from that person's possession or around them. that is the difference between red and yellow flag. in this case we heard from senator collins in this matter. in a press conference she has said i pended and the governor authorize a. he agreed with it. he was in the mental institution for observation or otherwise for two weeks or longer. that was in direct response to his clear admonitions that he wanted to kill people. so how this individual did not have department of justice or local and municipal law enforcement at his door making sure he didn't have weapons is beyond me. he definitely fell through the cracks. as nicole parler astutely points out given her experience, this individual is dangerous. it's important for all of our viewers and listeners to understand in my opinion the activity and attention is on mr. it should not turn into a political debate to try to restrain the availability of law-abiding citizens for weapons. >> i've got about 30 seconds left, nicole. robert card's sister-in-law says he may have been looking for an ex-girlfriend in the bowling alley. because he has new hearing aids he says he heard people bashing him in both the bar and the bowling alley. 15 to 20 seconds. >> there is always a precipitating stressor or factor to lead an individual to do something like this. what was the grievance? his ex-girlfriend he was trying to find? the grievance, the motivation, the ideation. that all contributes to this investigation. the motive is also important to look at. that will help law enforcement determine where his next steps may be and where he is hiding out. >> nicole parker we apologize for the short time. great analysis as always. we will continue breaking news coverage of the manhunt in maine as well as the united states striking targets in syria. continuing after the you can see the fire on the left-hand side of your screen and the smoke. we should note that even though the ground war has not started over the past four days, israeli air forces have launched some 800 airstrikes at particular targets. they have taken out a number of hamas leaders including today where they took out who they say is one of the architects of the october 7th attacks. we are working to find out from our cruise near the gaza israel border what that fire and smoke is about. we want to bring you that a long with other breaking news that the united states has responded launching airstrikes on syria earlier tonight. we are told that one was a weapons storage area. the other was an ammunition storage area. let's go live to tel aviv. alex has more on the timing of all this. what do you know? >> reporter: trace, this is a very delicate dance that we are seeing the u.s. trying to play by targeting some of these iranian backed groups that are in syria specifically as you mentioned ammunition depots that are trying to crack down and prevent any future attacks on u.s. troops that are stationed overseas. already we have seen 19 attempted attacks on u.s. troops overseas since all of this conflict began. a very clear attempt in the last several hours that we have seen from the u.s. to try to make sure this is not seen as a statement that would be escalatory. we saw from the statement earlier this morning here local time by secretary of defense lloyd austin saying this is not an attempt to expand the conflict further. it is worth noting that in the last couple of weeks around the world we have seen massive protests concerning the conflict here in israel with gaza. the protests have taken to the streets with people waving american flags and setting those on fire. what the u.s. is trying to do here is really separate the two. it is worth noting that just in the last 24 hours this was a major strategic day for israeli forces. they were able to go into the northern part of the gaza strip with tanks. this was again a big attempt to move forward, to gain back some ground. what they are saying is preparation for the next move. potentially by the u.s. not telling israeli officials about having all of this taking plays. just one more measure to try to make sure these issues are completely seen as separate and not exploratory. >> back to you as the news warns. let's bring in jewish insider editor who is one of the journalists to view raw footage of the hamas attack at a private screening. one of our correspondence as well. melissa luck, i know it was horrific. was it important to watch? >> it was crucial to watch. there is roughly 2000 foreign journalists on the ground covering this war. many of them have not been to israel before. many are not familiar with hamas. for them, viewing this footage was an eye-opening experience. there were about 200 of us in the room. it was very clear from the responses from the people who were watching that they were not prepared. they could not have imagined that hamas, which we as israelis know, is a terrorist organization. they could not believe that hamas was capable of this. there were people gasping and sobbing. the gentleman next to me even walked out in the middle of it. it is hugely important. >> alex was talking about these that you have seen around the world, the anti-semitic protest. if you looked at this video and you think it would be something for some of these protesters to watch what they are supporting. >> i've seen the conversation on twitter the last few weeks. i truthfully don't think it's going to matter to so many of the regular folks out there. my hope is that we have seen how this conflict has been reported. we saw the situation with the hospital last week. my hope is that journalists who are just coming in and learning about the situation and the conflict have a better understanding of what hamas is capable of. we are frankly, when you look at this conflict, hamas is not playing on the same level of morality as israel. >> israeli government spokesperson levi said the following. we are witnessing a holocaust like phenomenon unfolding in realtime. tomorrow israel will scream. this was last week and the stuff that melissa saw. it was screened for foreign journalists the raw unedited footage of hamas atrocities in the october 7th massacre as captured by death squads by cameras. it's incredible because one of our correspondence was there and he said the audio of the guy who was calling his parents and bragging about killing people was as heart-wrenching as any of the pictures. >> it was atrocious and shocking. that audio i believe has been released to some degree. the things that will stay with me forever are the things that will never see the light of day. there was one video that has haunted me for the last four days. it is of a woman, a young woman who was attempting to attend the video festival. it was taken by israeli troops after the attacks. this woman is deceased. she is lying on the highway. her skirt is hiked up and her legs are splayed. she is not wearing underwear. she was clearly the victim of sexual violence. her face was unrecognizable as a human face. what you see is another person trying to make out if this woman is her relative or loved one. to have that 1400 times is unbelievable. >> i don't want to show it because i just don't want to show it. we have some young people. we talked about a lot of young people at this festival, this music festival festival on october 7th. they were
