Molly good morning, we are outside of central maine medical center, where some of the victims from the two Mass Shooting scenes were brought for treatment. Weve watched staff, doctors, surgeons and nurses coming out, sometimes being escorted by Law Enforcement with long guns, helping folks get to their car this evening. We have seen the occasional embrace before they head off to where they are heading for the rest of the rough evening at this trauma center. In lewiston, dealing with the aftermath of all of this. Everything began to unfold 6 56 yesterday even, Lewiston Police responding to two shooting incidents. Bile 8 00, declared active shooting situation in lewiston. By 10 00, officials warned residents to avoid the area until all clear. County officials issued a shelter in place order at 10 25. By 11 00, robert card was named a Person Of Interest, 40 years old, he remains at large and they are still looking for him. Witnesses have told stories about survival. We were inside and a night of bowling. Out of nowhere, he just came in and there was a loud pop. Thought it was a balloon, i had my back to the door. I turned and saw it was not a baknow loo, he was holding a weapon, i booked it undo the lane and slid basically into where the pins are and climbed up into the machine and i was there until the cops got there. You hear the terrible situation. Internal Law Enforcement communication reveal that card is a firearm instructor believed to be in the army reserve, suffering from Mental Health issues, Hearing Voices. He was committed and received care over this past summer. The car that card was believed to be driving, white suburu, found in the nearby community of lisbon, community surrounded by woods, a river runs through the area. There is shelter in place there and here, as well as other neighbors communities, potentially impacted as the search goes on. Schools closed today. Here is Public Safety commissioner. There are multiple scenes to include multiple hospitals, followups, witnesses were speaking with and a lot of leads. The General Public has been cooperative and forthcoming with information. One of the businesses that was hit by the Mass Shootings, the bar and grill, released a statement saying, my heart is crushed, loss for words, in a split second your world gets turned upside down, we lost good people in this community. Can you tell us about this community, what it is like, what the people are like . Yeah. I used to live in lewiston. Its a city of neighborhood. People know one another and they help one another. They work together. I was in lewiston yesterday touring some businesses and went by schemenges. It was pretty quiet. Very quiet the whole time i was there, even downtown for lunch not much going on. When i got home later and found out what happened, i was stunned. Todd numbers being reported by various news outlets provide a range of number of individuals that lost their lives, number of individuals injured. Here is Maine Department of Public Safety commissioner commenting on that, take a listen. There are a lot of numbers out there, this is a fluid situation, last i want to come up and give number and change that One Direction or the other, i dont have firm numbers on that. When i do, well be happy to share those with you, it is important piece of healing and information for us to be aware of. There are numbers all over the map all evening and i dont think that is helpful. Todd in maine in 2022, 29 homicides the entire year, so obviously, it is tough for us all, especially you fine folks in that state to wrap your head around the numbers being reported in what is ranked as one of americas safest cities. Based upon your connection with Law Enforcement, can you provide us any new information or guidance on the numbers right now . I cannot provide numbers. I can say Law Enforcement did an incredible job and still are. State police, sheriffs, local police in lewiston and our game wardens, they were all on the spot as quickly as possible. It doesnt matter what color the uniform is that you are wearing, Cha The Chevron or insig nias are on it, they swore an oath. They chased that guy out of town, he is on the run now. It is a manhunt. They will catch him, chase him down and catch him and bring him to justice. Our Law Enforcement is doing an incredible job. Carley im sure they are. We know the shooting began 6 56 p. M. And then i did read a report that said that police were called in at 7 15 p. M. , which is about 19 minutes after the shooting occurred, initial report sole the timeline can change. Do you have information on when police were called and when they got to the scene . Any followup on what you just said . I dont as far as the timeline goes. I know pops were heard, assumed to be balloons or something along that line, it did not raise a red flag quickly. Once it did, everybody jumped into action. Im not sure timeline of response. Nesheiwat the required class i took, if you find yourself in a situation where there is a mass shooter, then what would you do. What they taught us, number one, run, as fast as you can, if you can. Hide. When you hide, try to close the door, barricade the door, lock yourself in, stay away from a window, call 911. If you are shot, put pressure on the wound. If you have to, fight for your life. I usually learn fire safety and needle stick injuries and advanced cardiac life support. Now they incorporated Mass Shooting. We see this mass casualty, whether from an earthquake or hurricane or if you are in a war zone or a Mass Shooting and it can be quite stressful. It can be quite challenging, especially for First Responders, paramedics, emergency room personnel, they are tasked with a job of identifying which patients are most critical. They have to enter the triage protocol, meaning who is most critical, who is breathing, who is bleeding, check the patients circulation, airway, vital signs and determine which patient needs Immediate Intervention and when can wait. With mass casualty, you are suddenly overwhelmed, overflooded with know tos of patients and limited resources. Job of the Healthcare Provider is to do as much as possible with limited resources you have. It can be very stressful and challenging, requires a lot of skill, training and a lot of prayer. Todd focus on the Mental Health of this individual for a moment now. I know as a doctor, you are not allowed to give psychological diagnosis unless you have treated the patient. But twoweek stay in a Mental Health facility, what does a stay that long tell you, doctor . Dr. Nesheiwat that tells me there was something very serious happening. Sometimes if a patient is a threat to themselves or others, usually they are committed with a 72hour hold. But two weeks, we know he was Hearing Voices. When i heard that, made me think of history of schizophrenia or drug use or intoxication, that sort of thing. Maybe, was he diagnosed many years ago and not taking medication, for example, if you have generalized anxiety disorder, post Traumatic Stress disorder. I believe he was in the military, welltrained firearm instructor so ptsd came to mind. In addition to typical anxiety, depression, sometimes Bipolar Disorder with psychotic episodes can happen. With men, sometimes they have difficulty expressing emotional struggle, we need to eradicate st stigma surrounded with Mental Health so people go get help they need.
