I want to start with some Breaking News here. We brought you reporting yesterday from the kibbutz, the Small Community along the israelgaza border. Today hamas militants attacked just here to there, targeting Israeli Soldiers. The idf says at least four soldiers were injured in what appears to be an Antitank Guided Missile attack, the first time this a number of days this kind of weaponry has targeted this community, one of the places where the October 7th Massacre took place. Israeli forces say they arrested one hamas operative today, 16 days after the initial attack, and the israelis continue to ramp up airstrikes on the gaza a strip ahead of an expected Ground Offensive that could come in a matter of hours and days. In the distance, we can hear the buzz of israeli drones, a number of airstrikes toward the north tonight, and it just gives you a sense of what the Southern Front looks like as the entire country is bracing for days of fighting to come. I do want to touch on the west bank, because overnight the israelis can conducted a rare airstrike in the refugee camp of janine, and there were hamas fighters according to the military that were hiding underneath a mosque. Israelis will rarely strike these types of positions, but they have ramped up efforts to arrest people in the west bank and also conduct strikes in an effort to try and insure a third front doesnt open up there. Weve been watching the last several days clashes between the Israeli Military and the iranianbacked hezbollah militants. A good with reason why, with a huge Ground Incursion looming in gaza against hamas down south, Prime Minister netanyahu found the time to come up north to be with the troops and to deliver a clear message to hezbollah dont attack or you will be devastated, he said. The fighting is going on. Antitank missiles, mortars, Small Arms Fire from hezbollah, tank, artillery and drone blasts from israel. 19 hezbollah fighters have been killed just in the 2 weeks, 6 Israeli Soldiers plus civilian casualties. Take a look at what we saw and heard a short time ago. Up to here in northern israel, seems like almost every neighborhood is reinforced in one way or another. At this turning of the road, more than a dozen tanks and a whole lot of Troop Doctors ready for anything. Three divisions of israeli troops are in the north along with heavy around a more guarding against possible infiltration and airborne attacks by hezbollah militants. Most of the villages have been evacuated in case of another war. The situation isnt easy. Were here, were guarding the country. We are getting ready and were ready whatever we need. You have senators divided over ukraine funding as well as republicans criticizing the the way President Biden wants to spend money on on the southern border within that aid package. And we have a house without a speaker. So regardless, the Department Of Defense is increasing its aid, serving longrange and shortrange, Patriot Missile Defense Systems to israel. Additionally, u. S. Soldiers received prepare to deploy orders, more of them now. In a statement, the Defense Secretary says he consulted with President Biden who decided to increase the Defense Posture because proxies in the iran attack u. S. Bases in syria and iraq in recent days. The president also asked about the Ground Invasion. Listen. Reporter are you encouraging the israelis to delay invasion . The terror group says medical reasons is the reason those two were released, there are ten more missing americans right now. What we dont know for sure is whether some of the unaccounted for are dead and have similar simply not simply not been uncovered yet, but we have a pretty strong idea that some number of the ten at least are being held in gaza by hamas. It seems that your republican colleagues are at a odds over how the president decidedded to structure this in terms of pairing ukraine aid with aid for israel. Im in favor of the concept of linking the big threats to the free world, and that is, you know, since the fall of Afghanistan Putin invaded, you know, ukraine. Thats a threat to europe. Chairman xi is threatening taiwan in the pacific, and now we have a war in the middle east. So it links all that including the southwest border that i think is also a threat. Gillian now, over on the senate side j. D. Vance on friday said, absolutely no, this is the wrong approach. Take a listen to him real quick. I think what the president did is completely disgraceful. If he wants to sell the American People on 60 billion more to ukraine, he shouldnt use dead israeli children to do it. It was disgusting. Gillian what do you think . Whats the right approach . Well, the good news is, hes no longer a senator. This isnt his decision. The the house will decide appropriate aid to each of the areas, and when we talk about israel specifically, lets remember the president right now is, in his words, every single time balancing support for israel and endlessly talking about the innocents in gaza. And the fact is that, you know, we see an awful lot of people who wont leave the area, people when who continue to deliberately be part of the, quote, human shields. So the fact is that his well look at his request, but itll undoubtedly be divided. Its also be undoubtedly modified because at least for republicans in the house, our goal is to support israel is and its legitimate rights. Remember, youre talking about people that are protesters that the president s listening to constantly that are talking about the palestinians. There was no occupied land according to International Law when they struck the israel. Gaza has been completely occupy iedfree since ariel sharon 17 years ago. The fact is this was an unprovoked war against israel, and our funding will reflect that. Gillian and do you think the appropriate mechanisms are in place whether congress has oversight or the president himself has oversight to insure that any aid that is ultimately funneled into gaza does not fall into the hands of hamas . Our appropriators are going to have to make sure that a there are very tight handcuffs on this because weve been fooled in the past by this administration, and we wont be fooled again. That includes on any of the linking of border walls and other areas that may get into the bill. But the process is the the appropriators will propose something. Our leadership, the whip and the majority leader, its their job to fashion and bring it to the floor. So i know the question today is when are we going to have a speaker. The fact is nub of this process none of this process requires a Speaker Other than it has to be brought to the floor after we elect a speaker. So well be doing that in the days and weeks to come leading up to having a speaker. Gillian now, an hour ago, Noon Eastern Time was the deadline for republicans in the house to throw their hat into the ring to become speaker of the house. And theres a lot of hats in the ring. Gillian theres a lot of cooks in the kitchen, some people might say. The total number at the edge of the day is nine according to elise stefanik. She tweeted out the final list. Whos going to make it to the top . Well, look, at this point anyone who handicaps probably just guessing. But what i will say is do our candidate, the candidate who had 96 of the vote on the day he lost office was Kevin Mccarthy. And right now, nothing against any of these nine, but i have no reason to believe any of these nine can get more votes than Kevin Mccarthy. So the House Republicans are going to have to look at two things. Theyre going to have to look at the slate of to candidates. Theyre also going to have to look at changing the rules when we go back to the floor is so that we dont have this happen again. Having, you know, i wasnt the best student in college, but if i got 96, i expected to get an a, not to get an f. And so were going to have to change the sensible rules. Thats part of the debate were going to have on monday and tuesday, is to bring stability back to the house as we bring a speaker back to the house. Gillian and if its no one on this list, whats The Next Step . Republicans will choose a speaker, we will get to 217. How we get there is, quite frankly, new ground because we havent been there before. But gillian and when you get there. But the reason we havent been there before is we havent had the set of rules that allowed for the removal of a speaker with just eight votes. Some of those eight today, i think, deeply regret what they did because it hasnt worked out the way they planned. They thought they were going to get, you know, some tough, emerging leader, and the reality is every member of congress has a few people who wont vote for them in their own party, and that shouldnt be the criteria. So were going to fix the the system in the coming days, were going to put a speaker back in, and is were going to get back on an an agenda that i think republicans were working very hard and successfully toward including sensible appropriation. First of all, this administration removed a lot of the Military Equipment from the region when it first came into office. Clearly, theres still a persistent problem from iran. The t. L. A. D. Batteries, that would not be aal that theyre worried about hamas escalating, those are Weapons Systems that would defend against the kinds of capabilities that iran has. And so the United States is clearly sending a message to to iran that these recent iranianbacked Terrorist Attacks against u. S. Forces, ships throughout the region will not deter the United States from defending israel. Mike what do you make of the delay in terms of the Ground Invasion of gaza, and do you believe President Biden is lecturing the the israelis on the Military Tactics they can use . Thats certainly what it seems like at this point. President biden once again sent out another tweet cautioning the israelis to follow the laws of war. That is becoming an irritant. I would suspect for the i e df because israel really has world class operators, they have lawyers carefully operating with the idf, carefully picking out targets to make sure that they comply with the laws of war. This is something that israel notoriously is very good at. They are not allowed to target civilians as such. They have to hit and target military targets as such but, of course, hamas has made gaza, essentially, an entire militarized city where theyve embedded with civilians. But, again, israel so far has shown no sign that they are not complying carefully with the laws of war. Mike so secretary of state tony blinken today said there is the likelihood of iranian escalation. What should the United States do in response or to be prepared . I mean, i think that the United States has several responsibilities here. One is to signal to iran not to get involved directly. Iran doesnt want to, but iran also understands that they can try to scare the United States from providing certain weapons capabilities in the region. And so the United States should communicate that they will not be deer thed from doing that. And deterred. And then we should provide is israel with whatever capabilities they need, specifically aaron dome interceptors, and in the last case, the United States must clearly and constantly communicate to the rest of the world that israel has a right to defend it and is complying with the laws of war. Israel is not going to have a friendly audience with the u. N. And with other capitals, and so the best friend it can have is the United States, and we must be clear on that point. Mike President Biden ended last week rolling out a 105 billion Funding Request for the war in israel or to help israel, ukraine and even some for the southern border. You are a argued that the United States and must support our allies. Not necessarily that package, but our allies. Make your case. Well, the United States really now has a problem with china, russia and iran. Thats not our choosing, thats theirs. And so right now you really see all of those countries on the march. So the United States has an a obligation to support those countries that are the ones that are being invaded or under the threat of invasion. These Weapons Packages in particular are very different, the kinds of Weapons Systems israel needs are very different than the kinds of systems that ukraine needs. And theyre very different than what we need to send to the pacific. The challenge is going to be is the United States going to build a defeints Industrial Base that can produce the necessary weapons we need to at scale. This is a political decision, a matter of american will. Mike what about that that it does seem like were on a war footing. We need to help in the middle east, supplies going to ukraine, weve got regimes on the march. To we need to act like react like were already at war . I think we to do. And, again, its a choice on the part of our adversaries. You can say, you know, the United States is tough. President biden made the point about we are the arsenal of democracy. Theyre more aspirational words. But really whats going to deter our adversaries is not just speech, its action. Its its going to be american hard power. Reporter the rocket fire is part of every night, and tonight three of the rockets got through the Iron Dome Defenses and hit a town. They went there, they hit an apartment building, a synagogue and, unfortunately, one just hit the open highway, but this was a car coming through at the time, and the driver of that car is said to have very serious injuries. We dont have an update on his condition. The idf did something remarkable in that they fired from an aircraft into the west bank which hasnt been done in a long time. They fired on the town of janine, and that is because the Intelligence Service developed intelligence that hamas Islamic Jihad cell was operating out of that mossing. I think went down to a chamber underneath the mosque and eliminated that cell. They also seized weapons in that case, some 450 palestinians have been arrested in the west bank since october the 7. Th. There was on friday something that encouraged a lot of people, and that was the release of the two americans, natalie and judith ranaan, who were being held hostage by hamas. That was welcome news for the, sadly, large crowd of people who have loved ones and family being held hostage in the gaza strip. But jonathan chen, who is a father of someone who was missing and presumed held hostage, is not optimistic that it means his son may soon see freedom. He thinks its a tactic by hamas. This move by hamas is very calculated in terms of when and who was being released, and i dont think its the an a indication of any kind about what is going to happen moving forward with the other hundreds of hostages that are stilling with held. I think its a part of their attempt at psychological manipulation of the israeli public. Reporter now, the aid trucks going into the gaza a strip from egypt have been mired in politics, but another grape of trucks got through today, some 17 trucks got through, 20 the trucks got in yesterday carrying food, water and medicine. Theyre not allowed to carry fuel. But its t just a drop in the bucket compared to the tremendous need. Those trucks can only go partway, they cant go to the northern part of the strip which is supposed to be evacuated at this point. At the same time, were a watching to see if the foreign nationals will get out of the gaza strip as they open that rafah crossing. Today, mike, none of the foreign nationals got out. Gillian from more perspective from the ground inside israel, well joined by an oral surgeon whos joined the israeli effort to identify deceased victims of that October 7th Hamas if Terror Attack which is still now underway 15 days later on. I want to ask you about the work that youve been doing, doctor, but first if you could just kind of set the scene for us. Talk to me about what youve seen on the ground, talk to me about victims youve encountered, tell us what youre hearing. Hi. I volunteer in a forensic unit that belongs to the police, but we Work Together with the armed forces now. Ive been volunteering there for 1215 years. I dont remember exactly how many years, but many years, and weve seen terrible, terrible cases. But, of course, nothing is even close to what weve seen now. On october 7th i was called, between october 7th and 8th at midnight, i was called to this army base, and they prepared this army base as being specially for identifying the bodies. They have many technological things like xrays and ct and biological labs to discover the dnas. And i went and we were there starting working on the bodies, identifying them, and each shift was between 1012 hours. We worked 24 7 working on identifying them. But as the hours went by, the truly e horrific things that the r, the things that we saw were really unbelievable. So unimaginably terrible that i really almost cant talk about it, cant speak about it. The bodies were, the bodies were burned. The babies had knives stuck into their heads. The old people were tied up and their eyes were taken out. And really many of hem were beheaded, many of the bodies. You know, when i think about it, i really start to i cry. It didnt happen to me until today really because we were working like robots. We were working on automatic. And anyway, after a few days the bodies had larva and had smells. You know, it got worse and worse every day. Its unbelievable how mean these people can can be, how cruel. Things that weve never encountered, never. Gillian well, doctor, i want you to, you know, take your time. This is obviously incredibly difficult to talk about. And if you need to stop, just tell us. Yeah. Gillian have you had, you and your colleagues, have you had success identifying the dental imprints which is, as i understand it, sort of what youre hoping to do there . How is the process working so far . Listen, up til now weve been working only 14, 15 days, we identified almost 1100 bodies or 1200 bodies, which is really unbelievable. I mean, we start with two rooms, then it grew to tree rooms and at the end ten rooms just 24 7 to identify all of them. But there are only 210 bodies hard left that arent identified. But we wont stop working until we, until we discover all the people that are missing. Trust me, weve of course, im sorry, we dont know exactly who is hostage and who isnt hostage, so that makes it more difficult. But we treat them all as a missing. So were trying to find common things, you know . They give us xrays from before and after. We do the after ask we get xrays from before ask we compare it. Gillian do you have a sense of how long conceivably it might take for you and your colleagues to identify the remaining 200 some deceased . Its hard to say because these are the most difficult cases. So, i dont know, people said today it might take months. I hope that it will take weeks, because with we really worked very, very, very fast and very efficient. And, you know, we understand the importance of it. But theres so many parents and so many families out will the that are still looking for their loved ones. Today i was called to the place to help identify three bodies. One of them was beheaded. The two others were so burnt that we couldnt even find the teeth which really doesnt happen unless someone violently destroyed it. The behavior is really terrible.
