you got it. >> dana: never ends. have a good show. >> bret: good evening. i'm bret baier. breaking tonight, a u.s. official tells fox news on background defense secretary lloyd austin has ordered a significant number of u.s. noncombat troops to be ready to deploy to israel. the personnel have been told to be on standby to be sent within 24 hours, if needed the israeli army is expected to launch a massive ground invasion of gaza at any time now. it's also getting ready for battle possibly with hezbollah along the northern border with lebanon. israeli troops and hezbollah terrorists have exchanged fire repeatedly there. the humanitarian situation meantime in gaza is worsening with shortages of power, food, water, and medicine. many refugees consider to wait at the border with egypt. which is still closed. president biden says he thinks it would be a big mistake if israel chooses to occupy gaza once again. meantime, 30 americans have been killed in this conflict so far. at least 13 are missing. we have fox team coverage tonight. peter doocy is at the white house with the latest on that stand by order for american troops. greg palkot on the israel-lebanon border where conflict as we said with hezbollah seems more and more likely. but we begin with senior correspondent mike tobin in southern israel. good evening, mike. >> mike: good evening, bret. with all eyes focused on troops staging at the edges of the gaza strip. >> idf spokesman says when conditions meet their needs a ground operation will begin. [explosion. >> dark black smoke billows over gaza. sirens wail as rockets fly over israel and tensions flare on several flunts with the threat to the impending ground invasion could start at a moment's notice. and now 10 days since hamas massacre in israel, new body cam footage shows hamas gunmen arriving at the israeli kibbutz and beginning their deadly rampage. the israeli military confirmed at least 199 hostages were taken into gaza. higher than previously thought with at least a dozen believed to be american citizens. israel's defense minister said that with the support of the united states, they will achieve victory over evil. >> this will be a long war. the price will be high. but we are going to win. >> a thought echoed by the prime minister who compared hamas to the nazis. [our goal is victory. a crushing victory over hamas. >> destruction in gaza is growing by the day. some 1 million palestinians run out of their homes according to the u.n. more than half in the area south of the evacuation zone but sources tell fox hamas has been blocking some roads. back in israel, the national forensic center is engaged in the grim task of identifying those killed found burned and executed. out of 956 bodies received so far they have identified more than half. >> when you hear the stories of these people standing behind this charred bodies there is something terrible happened and this is difficult. i see -- i saw many things in my career, many things. but the magnitude is terrible and the cruelty is terrible. >> infamous hamas leader says some of the hostages held in the gaza strip are israeli army officers. they want to trade for prisoners in israeli jails. bret? >> bret: mike tobin on the ground in israel. mike, thank you. the israeli military has ordered residents to evacuate almost 30 communities near the lebanese border. hezbollah terrorists continue to exchange fire with israeli troops there. senior foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot is at the israel lebanon border tonight. good evening, greg. >> hi, bret. yeah. the israel lebanon border is about three miles behind us through this night we have been watching israeli flares go up. israeli artillery go out and right now a drone overhead. they try to target hezbollah militants next door. skirmishes past week up and down this border hezbollah rockets anti-tank missiles raining down. we have heard the crableg of militant gunfire there have been numerous casualties on both sides of the border. the fear growing that the iranian backed militants could open another frontier. spreadio posted on monday by hezbollah allegedly showing them knocking out israeli surveillance towers hauntedly similar what hamas did when they started their rampage of terror. no wonder on israel ordered that evacuation of 28 villages here. including the one we are in as the israeli military builds up here. we have seen dozens of tanks, ceases of armor, troops deployed. what we hear from the soldiers is they don't want to get this wrong. the fear is hezbollah might try to tie up israeli units to divert attention and arms as hamas contents with a looming israeli full-scale invasion. hezbollah, of course, a known enemy of israel. it claims 100,000 fighters, as many as 150,000 rockets. it has clashedz with israel in the past, including in the lengthy 2006 war. again, iran, a sponsor of both hezbollah and hamas. on monday, bret, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu told hezbollah do not repeat the mistakes of the past and iran's foreign minister however said war on other fronts is approaching the unavoidable. we will see. back to you. >> bret: greg palkot live along israel's northern border. greg, thanks. ♪ ♪ >> bret: president biden continues to face intense pressure to save americans held hostage in gaza and, as mentioned before, we have received word his pentagon chief has told some u.s. troops to be ready to go to israel on short notice. white house correspondent peter doocy has that part of the story tonight live from the north lawn. good evening, peter. >> peter: bret, i was told today by a top official here at the white house about a potential biden trip to israel, quote: this is a fast-moving train. whatever is happening behind the scenes right now did require the president to cancel a pre-planned trip to tout his climate agenda in colorado. >> the president will be staying home here at the white house today to focus on national security issues. >> peter: advisers and spy chiefs briefed president biden as the defense secretary sent be ready to deploy orders to american troops for, quote: further defense for israel, if needed in advisory or medical support roles. >> can you foresee u.s. troops in combat in this new middle east war? >> i don't think that's necessary. >> peter: the effort to free american hostages also continues at the highest levels. >> we are working like hell on it. >> peter: the secretary of state's group was sheltering in place. [siren] >> peter: as sirens warning of incoming missiles blared at the israeli equivalent of the pentagon. >> the united states has israel's back. blinken hasvisited seven countre the hamas attack on israel. the. >> the purpose of seeing all of our partners was first and foremost to listen to all of them. >> pro-palestine protesters calling for a cease-fire massed on pennsylvania avenue as president biden says is he competent israel will follow the rules of war. >> it would be a mistake to -- for israel to occupy gaza. >> but is he supportive of israel's military plans. >> israel has to respond. they have to go after hamas. hamas is a bunch of cowards. they are hiding behind the civilians. >> peter: just in the few minutes since the show start weed got word from a defense official that the 26 marine expeditionary unit, which is a special operations capable marine rapid response force is moving closer to israel via the red sea. and you can hear in the background those protests that have been pretty noisy all day continued tonight. the loudest chant that we hear which continues right now is cease-fire now. >> bret: that's pretty loud for the north lawn of the white house. peter, thank you. >> is iran behind the gaza war? >> i don't want to get into classified information but to be very blunt with you, there is no clear evidence of that. >> at this point no evidence. >> at this point. >> no evidence that iran is behind any of this. >> correct. >> one of the chief operatives behind all these proxies happens to be the irgc. if you want to solve and cure the cancer, you have to take the eye of the octopus out and not just fight the ten tickles. the solution is iran and regime change. >> bret: is iran behind this? with that question and more we welcome in the chairman of the house foreign affairs committee texas republican congressman michael mccaul. mr. chairman, thanks for the time. you know, that question posed by scott pelley on "60 minutes" and the answer received by the president really raised some eyebrows i'm told in the foreign policy and intelligence community. what was your thoughts when you heard it and what can you tell us about it. >> i don't understand this attempt to down play iran's role and sweep fund the rug. iran is behind all of this. their fingerprints are all over. this iran provides $150 million per year to hamas and weapon systems that they use to kill innocent civilians in israel. of course they are behind this. all their proxies, hamas is a proxy of iran. hezbollah is a proxy of iran. and the iran-backed she a militias in iraq and elsewhere are all backed by iran. so, the idea that they are somehow not behind this really defies common sense. what i don't want to see is more funding. today i'm introducing my bill to freeze those $6 billion of assets through sanctions so that we don't fund more of this terror that iran is funding across the middle east. >> bret: yeah. let alone the billions of dollars from oil sales that iran has because of loosened sanctions. but, you know, we have the "new york times," "the washington post," the "wall street journal," all with reporting that iran was intrick cattily involved in the planning. reuters has this story out, hamas, iran leaders agree to continue cooperation after attack on israel during their meeting in qatar's capital doha. praised the rampage as historic victory that had department a setback to israel's occupation of palestinian territory. not to dwell on this, but you think the administration is somehow soft peddling this to avoid talking about its own iran policy? >> you know, i don't know what else to think about it other than they desperately want this nuclear weapons agreement with iran, but the fact is they are behind this. and, in fact, the president of iran said that if israel invades gaza that iran will have to take action. what does that mean? we don't know exactly. we think the proxies will light up including hezbollah. bret, this is the nightmare scenario that we have always been briefed on in the national security space is if you many a southern front with hamas and then a northern front with hezbollah. remember, hezbollah is the a team here they are much better than hamas. they have 100,000 rockets. and precision guided weapons that could overload the entire iron dome in israel that is the fear factor. so far we have been able to keep them out of this fight but if they get into it, it is going to light up the middle east in many ways and to your point about american soldiers, it will call into question of the united states to defend israel and to stop this? whether a do you think the extent of the ready warning more to do with american hostages possibly or on standby for some kind of action with israel? >> i think it's two things. one special operators. look, in 2004, in new jersey, we had to go house-to-house and liberty hostages and kill terrorists. and that's exactly what we're very good at that. and so we're training the israelis how to go house to house including the hostage rescue team from the fbi. but it also has the impact of deterrence. and i think that's important. very important when it comes to iran and hezbollah. as they see, you know, this aircraft carrier in the eastern mediterranean surrounded by all these battle ships in the united states. they know we are serious about taking action, if necessary to stop a greater conflict. the key here is to contain and not have an escalation. we don't want hezbollah into this. we don't want iran any more into this than they already are. and, you know, my committee does the authorizations of use of military force. i don't want to be passing that out of my committee with this conflict. >> bret: well, as we look at a map, i want to put a map up of gaza and the escape routes and the israelis are telling the palestinians inside gaza to get down from that upper red part in the north down to the south, you know, possibly a ground operation begins some time in coming days, hours, we don't know. but that one crossing at the south on -- along the southern border with egypt. the rafah border crossing is so far closed off. i mean, what do you tell people? are there diplomatic talks about that? egypt is worried about who is coming across that border, a unique thought process, wondering who is coming across the border they are stopping people at that border. what's the latest with that? >> hamas is responsible for most of this, if not all of it. you are absolutely right. we don't want to see 1 million innocent civilians trapped. so i just got off the phone with the ambassador from qatar, i have talked to egypt, the saudis want to play a role in this in terms of financing to get some of these -- have a release valve if you will out of gaza to a safer place where they can be protected from hamas but also as israel begins its second phase going in. the israeli military plan is, number one, they have gone after the top hamas leaders. they have been very successful at command and control. number two is going to be a blockade in southern gaza to block hamas from coming down to use these civilians as shields, if you will, that they can then use against the israeli army. so, this is -- it's very dangerous right now. we don't want to see innocent civilians killed. >> bret: i only have a few seconds here, mr. chairman. but i want you to take off this chairman hat and put on the chairman that you used to be of the homeland security committee. we're getting ready to do a story about the domestic threats and you would say that they are real for us, whoever has already gotten through our southern border. >> right. we have had seven million encounters at the southern border. we know that hundreds have been on the terror watch list. you know, when i was chairman of homeland security committee just a handful of those only 19 hijackers that took downtown world trade center. i cannot ever get an assurance of the administration that we haven't let this get in. in fact, there was an isis, you know, basically organizer that was getting in, uzbekistan into the united states of america. it doesn't take very many to cause a lot of destruction. and we know the border is wide open and that is why this policy is so dangerous. >> bret: mr. chairman, we appreciate your time. would love to have you back. >> thanks, bret. for having me. >> bret: as the fbi director warns of the threat of lone actors inspired by the events in the middle east. a young muslim boy is stabbed to death here in this country. we value live report, next. >> the targeting of a community because of their faith is totally unacceptable. >> he paid the price for the atmosphere of haterash dehumanization. can feel like an intense burning sensation ♪. er, ♪. and get up to $300 off. with verizon business. it's your business. it's your verizon. ♪ >> bret: an illinois man is charged with a hate crime tonight. he is accused of fatally stabbing a 6-year-old muslim boy and seriously injuring his mother. correspondent garrett tenney is in chicago tonight with the latest. good evening, garrett. >> bret, good evening. officials are describing this attack of nothing short of evil. police say 71-year-old joseph knocked on the door of his tenant and attacked her and choking her and stabbing the young mother more than a dozen times with a 12-inch military style knife and brutally killing her 6-year-old son who was buried today while she remained in the hospital recovery. >> a 71-year-old man signatures on top of a 6-year-old kid stabbing him more than 26 times. you tell me what type of man he can do that. >> investigators say zuba who has no criminal record targeted the family because they were muslim and he was upset about what is happening in israel. this weekend, the fbi director christopher wray repeatedly warned of a surge in domestic threats against muslim and jewish communities. there is no question increase of reported threats and got to be on the lookout especially for lone actors who may take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own. >> even before this latest inquiry hate crimes against jews in america were at their highest point in almost three decades. crime data released by the fbi today shows more than 1100 anti-jewish crimes last year. up more than 36% from the year before. with tensions running high, officials across the country are stepping up security at mosques, synagogues and religious schools and asking the public to be on the lookout and report anything suspicious. bret? >> bret: garrett tenney live in our chicago bureau, garrett, thank you. ♪ ♪ the numbers from the first few days of the fiscal year show the migrant surge along the southern border is a very diverse affair. many of those trying to come into this country have ties to countries that are considered america's adversaries as we just talked about with the chairman, mike mccaul. correspondent griff jenkins is in eagle pass, texas tonight with the latest. good evening, griff. >> good evening, bret. and border officials are concerned by the number of migrants from countries with ties to terrorism illegally crossing the u.s. southern border. in just the past 14 days of this fiscal year. more than 30 iranians, nearly 60 syrians, some 35 pakistanis, 285 afghans and nearly 2,000 chinese have arrived. now cbp sources also confirmed to fox news that there have been at least two iranian single adult males apprehended that landed on the terrorist screening watch list meaning that they have potential ties to terrorism and could pose a serious threat to our national security. as you look at our live fox drone shot here in eagle pass, there have been four iranians apprehended in this sector two weeks. two lebanese men in their 20's and one egyptian man in his 40's apprehended here at the end of last week, all remain in custody while undergoing additional screening. local pecan farmer recently met with the sector chief here who share concerns over a terrorist crossing the border. >> he believes that it's just a matter of time or it's inevitable that something happen. seeing people come into the country that we know nothing about. that concern has always been with me because of what i have seen. >> griff: and, bret, border officials also worry about those known got-aways, migrants seen but not brought into custody. sources tell fox news there have been more than 16,000 in just 14 days. bret? >> not quite. did he make progress as you say over the weekend. today he picked up mike rodgers the chairman of the armed services committee from alabama. that's seismic because rogers adamantly opposed jim jordan on friday and he flipped his script. he is for him today that could influence other defense hawks to come along and stuart jim jordan. jim jordan put out a letter today. he called for unity among republicans. he wrote, quote: the country cannot afford us attacking each other. bret. >> bret: even if he does not have the votes? >> we think that they are going to do that. the reason why is that he wants to kind of smoke out his opponents. kind of dare them to vote against him on the house floor tomorrow. this will be around noon or 12:30 perhaps tomorrow. get them on the record and then jim jordan allies will attack those republicans who are against him. i'm told that that approach could backfire. you might actually alienate members who you are trying to court. now, here's the barometer. does he come in tomorrow and actually win the speakership or is he within striking dance say five or ten away he maybe stays in. what happens if he is 30 or 40 away? what happens then? do they continue with jim jordan? it's believed that he is closer to that 10 to 5 range right now. it's all about the math. he can only lose four, bret. and look tomorrow for some sympathy votes perhaps for steve scalise who won last week and then dropped out. >> bret: chad pergram live on the hill, thanks. >> i feel real good about the momentum we have. i think we are real close. it's not about pressuring anybody. it's we got to have the speaker. you can't open the house and do the work of the american people and help our dearest and closest friend israel if you don't have a speaker. >> we have to get a speaker this week. there are too many world events taking place. our friend, ally israel needs our support. we need to make sure we secure our border. >> urgency of the middle east is, that enough to push jim jordan over the finish line. 217 votes depending how many are in the chamber at the time. let's bring in fox news chief political analyst brit hume. brit, good evening, your thoughts as we get ready for this big vote tomorrow. >> well, i suppose that jordan is the best asset is the world situation and the fact that this embarrassing absence of a speaker is has gone on now for quite some time. and some people who oppose him -- after all, he had what 99 votes against him when he was nominated, what, 113-99, something like that? suggests that, you know, there are a olot of people that particularly don't want him to be the speaker. if people throw up their hands and say look we have got to have somebody and vote for him. i guess that gives him a chance. he is not somebody how would ordinarily think he would be a natural to be speaker. he is an insurgent. always has been. he expresses that in part by the fact you see him walking around always in short sleeves. never with a jacket or almost never. you see the kind of a questioner he is in the hearings that he heads as head of the judiciary committee and other investigative assignments he has had and he is very aggressive. he is smart. very tough with people. but is he not somebody that -- the word that comes to mind when you think about jim jordan is not uniter. that's just not -- that's just not what he has ever particularly been. he has a following for sure and popular on the new right i think he has some work to do if he is going to get this job. >> bret: could we have a jacketless speaker? >> i think it would be a big mistake. hamas and the extreme elements of hamas don't represent all the palestinian people. >> we are prepared for a ground mobilization if the government instructs us to do so. the essence is mobilization in order to meet our mission to destroy hamas and defend the people of southern israel. >> we are hours closer, maybe days closer, we don't know, to an israeli operation on the ground in to gaza. the "new york times" writes it this way: israeli invasion plans target gaza city and hamas leadership. the assault is expected to be israel's biggest ground operation since it invaded lebanon in 2006. it would also be the first in which israel has attempted to capture land and at least briefly hold on to it since its invasion of gaza in 2008. we are just getting word of communication from turkish officials to hamas leadership and some talk that they may release non-israeli hostages. we haven't confirmed that waiting for some feedback from the state department and others. but, with that, let's bring in a panel. ben domenech editor-at-large for the spectator. host of the ben domenech podcast on fox news radio. kimberley strassel a member he of the editor board at the "wall street journal" and reuters. kimberley, that would be quite something the non-israeli hostages being released. we just don't know if hamas would do it number one or what that would look like. >> there has certainly been no progress with that so far, bret. there was a discussion working with egypt to try to get americans who are in gaza out. that has stalled over a lot of complications, including the terms by which you would be able to get aid back in to something the egyptians were demanding: we'll see if the turks can get through. this is going to be a very big task for the biden administration. can they make any progress on this because that's got to be one of the first things before you even start talking about some of the bigger questions what you do with refugees, et cetera. >> bret: jeff, here is jake sullivan, national security adviser talking about deterrence. >> there is a risk of an escalation of this conflict, the opening of a second front in the north and you, of course, of iran's involvement. that is a risk. that's a risk that we have been mindful of since the start. it's why the president moved so rapidly and decisively to get an aircraft carrier into the eastern mediterranean, to get aircraft into the gulf because he wants to send a very clear message of deterrence. >> bret: this is interesting, you know, dichotomy here. they are talking about deterrence and being tough and trying to send a message to iran not to expand fighting to hezbollah or get involved at all yet when asked specifically about iran, white house officials and the president himself in that "60 minutes" interview could not get to iran is somehow behind it in any way, shape, or form. >> well, you are absolutely right, bret. they have been saying that repeatedly that the intelligence shows so far anyway, and we're obviously more than a week in now since the brutal attack that iran was not behind it. but, deterrence is at the top of mind for sure. and trying to prevent a wider regional war is in the interest of certainly of the united states and of the whole region from the u.s. point of view. it's a big risk. and whether iran was behind the specific hamas attack or not, we know that iran is supportive of what hamas did. and so that's something that the u.s. just does not want to see escalating into something more. >> bret: i mean, jeff, i pointed earlier in the mccaul interview about reuters report, about hamas and iranian officials meeting in doha saying they were going to continue cooperation and it was historic victory that hamas had to set back israel's occupation. ben, i guess the question is, you know, we have all of this reporting, "new york times," "the washington post," "wall street journal," reuters, others and, yet, there is this disconnect. i'm not going to dwell on it, but it is standing out to me as you listen to what's being said about this conflict. >> you don't have to dwell on it, bret. but i think that america ought to dwell on it. because i think it's at the core of the critique of no just what the biden white house has been doing in the months leading up to this but really the approach that joe biden has used throughout his career and that this team has used at every opportunity during the eight years of the obama administration and now these three years under joe biden in which they have been in charge. frankly, they have led us in a direction in our relationship toward iran that continue to coddle them that, gave them every opportunity to gain access to funds to lower sanctions to lead to less and less pressure and what have we been rewarded with? well our key ally in the middle east has now suffered the worst attack that they have experienced on the jewish people since the holocaust. so, i think there is a critique to be leflted there. one that is worth focusing on and there is always this talk in the wake of a disaster of security or intelligence. now is not the time to point fingers. now is not the time to ask questions about these things. we need to deal with the problem at hand. we do. those questions deserve to be answered. they deserve to be asked. and i hope we can reach a point where we actually get the firm connection that we deserve to understand about what role iran played in this. >> bret: kimberley, i think another big question what this looks like once israel is in there, say the street-to-street fighting, the building to building happens. they get in there and take out hamas leadership and they are there in gaza and then what happened? you know, i think there are a lot of questions marks around that. >> there is a question mark whether the administration can deter iran to do more encouraging hezbollah. the president was great in that interview saying they had israel's back going in, what happens once is he there? that's going to be the real test of this administration's commitment to israel. my guess they really don't want to stay there never. they want to get hamas out. but if they feel they have to for security for israel, then will the u.s. stick with them? will jim jordan be the guy? the vote is tomorrow. we're back with the panel. jeff, that has been quite something. back and forth. steve scalise pug out. jordan trying to send a dear colleague letter to all of his republican colleagues and also making phone calls over the weekend. >> and also making clear in that clip that you played earlier bret that the house can't get anything done wore israel or anything else without a speaker. so it's clear that it's not just outside criticism. it's not just the look of this being not particularly favorable for republicans it's also just the fact that it means they can't put their money where their mouth is as it were when it comes to doing what they want and what the congress wants to do to support israel along with the other priorities that the party and that the lawmakers have. >> bret: yeah, kimberley, there is going to be a vote tomorrow, some time afternoon. and then they will know if he gets to the 217, which it's not expected, our math head counter chad pergram says he is a little short, whether it's 10 or 5, still short. and the question is what the pressure looks like for those who vote against them. >> a lot going on, too. who have absolutely nothing to do with jim jordan, all right? there is some people understandably in the caucus who are still very unhappy what happened to kevin mccarthy they feel to nominate and vote for someone that is on the righter side of the conference would somehow reward the matt gaetz's et cetera in the worlds there are some people, for instance, that are in biden districts that they might want to first vote come out and just show at least on a vote, on a recorded vote that maybe they weren't initially up for jim jordan but they are happy to vote for him down the road. some of these things take a while to sort out. you just have to remember every single one of those casting a vote has their own political situation they are dealing with. that's all playing in this, too, with a very narrow margin. >> bret: it's interesting. we are talking about israeli funding and how this relates to the middle east. bebb but there is the question of ukraine funding and whether there is a supporter in jim jordan or bringing to the floor those things that some of the moderates and obviously the democrats care about. >> look, it's the ancient vulcan project only jim jordan can fund the government. that's really what we are experiencing right now. he is the only one with the level of trust from the right that will allow this government to remain funded and deal with all of these different issues. the endorsement from mike rogers today, which i personally think kevin mccarthy had something to do with, is very significant. and i think it puts jim jordan closest of anyone in this conference potentially to the speakership is incredible rise for the man in short sleeves from ohio who went from being a key player in the john boehner vacating back in the day to on the cusp of a speakership tonight. >> bret: that's another question. does he put on a jacket?
