All of this going on behind the scenes with this to make sure that the israelis are set up for success and what will be an extraordinarily difficult ground campaign. One of the Big Questions is will hezbollah get involved. They are up there on the southern border of lebanon. Hamas for all that barbarity that it showed in the attacks of last weekend is not considered as strong as hezbollah. If hezbollah gets involved in the israelis have to fight a two front war, how does that change the equation . It changes it significantly. It will require israel to make very difficult decisions on allocation of its resources. Whether its to the north or the south they could delay or Impact Campaign down into gaza, certainly. It has very, very significant implications for the campaign. As you mentioned, hezbollah is very capable. Much more technically enabled. Better weapons. More fighters. More organized. It could be a very serious threat. Which is why it think we are seeing the United States posture and the way that we are here to send a very clear message to the region about trying to prevent any enlargement or expansion in this conflict. But if the United States has made it clear we dont want to be involved, how effective is the Deterrent Force if we are not launching Cruise Missiles into iran or at hezbollah camps or hamas sites . The way it is effective is these Carrier Strike groups can hold hezbollah, can hold my ron and other actors that may try to step into this. They can hold them at risk. The United States can make decisions down the line about perhaps those resources if it looks like it is expanding the conflict. That is the idea. The deterrence is a factor of both capability and wealth. I think we have seen a strong message from our government in terms of our support for israel. Now we are seeing the capability show up in theater that can back up that wall. Jon certainly hamas did not want this barbaric attack and think there would be no response from the israelis. They had to know this incursion into gaza is coming. I, personally, just have to wonder whether they have wired the tunnels. Whether they have laid antitank mines in the streets in anticipation of precisely the kind of response that israel is launching. That is exactly right. As Secretary Austin said, this is a three dimensional fight here. Not only the surface, but it is in the air, above the ground and buildings and other structures there. It is also subterranean. There are reports that hamas has built, you know, over the years about 480 kilometers worth of underground tunnels. This is significant. There should be no allusions on how difficult this fight is. Complaints. For palestinians living in gaza, the larger picture for them is that israel controls what goes in or out of gaza. They broke primary responsibility on israel and then they complain about hamas. At least as it advertises itself as defender of the palestinians that much palestinians support because they blame israel for their current situation. Why do the people continue to support hamas to whatever extent they do if the conditions in gaza, the Living Conditions are as horrible as they are said to be. I agree. First blush it is a puzzle. But they are bad. That affects hamas which loses Domestic Support the more things go on and they are terrible which may have been an incentive for them to act. Again, if you blame some other party for your own condition, no matter how bad the condition gets, if you think its somebody elses fault that is a different situation. There is a Historical Context here. This year it did not pop up in 2007. The parties in the region, the palestinians and israelis have a long history here. People have taken sides on that. Much more likely to support their own side then they are to blame their own. What do you think are the chances that israel get those hostages back, jim . Well, i think it will be really difficult. I think we will see a Land Incursion. All of the signs are pointing in that direction. You yourself said people were expecting it sooner rather than later. I think that once that happens any sort of space for some negotiation or some sort of swap to get those people out will be very difficult. So i think that that will be more casual. Jon, actually, the think that i would urge loyal fox viewers to keep in mind is we have had this terrorist attack. We have had the opening phase of the israeli response. One, egypt is playing an enormously Important Role here but all behindthescenes do not forget it was egypt that actually brokered the ceasefire back in 2021 after the hamas war. The crossing at rafah is not only people coming out, but it supplies going in. Good job by Secretary Of State blinken getting egypt to consider what is going on here. I think egypt very much wants to see the same goals. No escalation, lets get this conflict over as soon as possible and the ability to get supplies into gaza through rafah is as least as significant as getting people out across the crossing when it does reopen. Jon israeli leaders are very determined and talking very tough. You can understand why given the magnitude of the losses they suffered last week. But they do make the military forces have to walk a fine line when they go into gaza dont they . Yes they do. Their first objective is to do it frankly what they did not get done and 2021 after that muscle war israel really thought they had taken out most of hamas Military Capability with the missiles, obviously not. Plus this horrible surprise escalation egged on by iran. So what the idf has to do is try to wipe out hamas Military Capability. But without creating a desert and a wasteland in gaza by the population of gaza is still going to have to go back and live there when this is over. That is very clear. So israel has to be effective but they have to be precise and very discriminant they have got to have the intelligence Military Intelligence to really figure out where that capability is they need to go and take care of. They have a big job ahead of them i think that is why you see them saying Everybody Move south they will work on the northern part first. Interesting Secretary Austin pointing out there going to have to go get some of the underground tunnels and really eliminates that hamas Military Capability built up by iran that is there in gaza. Jon you mentioned intelligence is obviously in huge Intelligence Failure this attack took place with nobody apparently aware of its an advance on the israeli side or the u. S. Side. But the United States is obviously going to be sharing whatever intelligence it can with the israelis and those capabilities as Collection Capabilities are formidable. Oh yes. This Intelligence Failure is going to hurt forever this stastingwill never go away. So what is essential now is for the israelis to sort out where theytheir good intel really is. Where do they think hamas key capabilities are and how do we help them. In a lot of ways everything from our ability to look at satellite imagery, electronic communications, even infrared imaging that shows you how people and tunnels move around within gaza. All of that intelligence is going to be combined im sure we will share everything that we can. We may even use some of our commercial imagery providers to help out with this. All of that is then going to taffyfocus to the Israeli Defene forces to make their tactical judgments about where they need to strike. With the key areas really are and then how to make sure hamas Military Leaders do not seep away as this offensive begins.
