[explosions] >> jesse: tonight israel will begin to exact revenge. the ground operations against hamas in gaza has begun. israeli infantry and armored divisions rolling into the strip to avenge the slaughter of 1300 innocent israeli civilians. well-trained israeli combat specialists are conducting their first operational raids searching for hostages, gathering intelligence and neutralizing terrorists. hamas is no you on the defensive. israel has ordered a full evacuation of northern gaza telling a million palestinian civilians leave immediately or become collateral damage. hamas is ordering all palestinians to stay put, making their own people into human shields. the terrorists will not be subdued easily. they're still launching hundreds of rockets into israel. hamas rockets not surgical strikes. these are indiscripple and in ba rages that land in is really neighbors and on israeli highways. these random rockets terrorize israeli minds in population centers. israel's air campaign is drastically different. the idf has showered gaza with precision missile strikes. knocking out hamas strong holds, hideouts and leadership. last night, 750 targets were hit. here now retired brigadier general anthony tata the defense under secretary of policy under president trump, and lieutenant colonel daniel davis, a senior fellow at defense priorities. all right, davis, your take on what we're going to see very shortly in gaza. >> well, i'll tell you jesse it's going to be a lot harder than what people are thinking. you may remember in 2009 obama sent u.s. army into afghanistan and said they were going to destroy the taliban and you see how that worked out. and the reason why it's similar because once the israeli forces go if, how do they know who's a hamas fighter as opposed to just some man that happens to be standing there. almost everybody's armed with an ak-47 and unless israel's going to literally kill everyone they're going to have to find some effective way to be discriminating in who they're going to shoot otherwise they'll gain more enemies than getting rid of hamas and that's one of the biggest difficulties israel has. and, look, the israeli army has not been trained for this sophisticated urban warfare. they've been trained in other things over time and it will be harder for them to operate in a hard learning curve many people have think. >> jesse: why isn't the idf trained in urban combat? >> because that's not what they have ever expected or done it, other than a handful of incursions here and there and those are targeted. but as far as waging war in a city they haven't ever done it and it's a very different skill set because you are trying to eradicate an enemy force that's hard to identify. but that's just something israel hasn't done, almost no one has done other than bakhmut in the russian/ukraine war. >> how difficult is this going to be when you combine the tunnels with the rubble and the snipers and the ieds? >> haze jesse extremely difficult particularly when you think about they have the tactical fight in gaza, they were the operational fight perhaps in the go lan and so the israeli high command is really fighting on three fronts, and the troops in fight in gaza have three dimensional, the high rises that haven't fallen yet they have the rubbles and then they have the tunnels as you aptly pointed out. so they're really going to have to search. i have high confidence that they are training right now on these types of urban combat techniques, close war combat. a really good example from history is the russian second fight where the us declared it as the most destroyed city on planet earth and the russians leveled that city and there was a lot of deception, ambush operations, explosive devices and close quarters combat and i think the israelis would be wise to study that. and our fight in fallujah quite frankly. it's going to be brutal building to building, door to door, and i think that's why they're giving them 24 hours to get out of town because they don't want to have to think about friend or foe when they go in these knowledges. >> jesse: if hezbollah opens up a second front in the north, what kind of challenge will that present israel? >> yeah, so they're going to have to hold with tank battalions in the north, artillery, that's a more conventional fight, open terrain fight. they've done that before. they know that take rain well. i've been there. i've been in golan, i've been in the tunnels in southern is thrill if he had in from gaza. so it's the second front issue fixes forces in the north preventing israel from amassing forces in the south. so it creates this dilemma and they've done a massive call-up of reserves for exactly that purpose to be able to hold in the north while they focus in the south, what we call a main effort in the south and a supporting effort in the north. >> jesse: all right. tata, davis, we're so grateful to have you guys and your expertise join us here this evening. thanks, as always. . the only thing harder than living in gaza is leaving gaza. this is a massive palestinian traffic jam inching south away from gaza city after israel repeatedly warned civilians to evacuate before the ground invasion begins. but hamas told the palestinians to ignore israel's instructions, hamas telling palestinians you're going nowhere, stay as our human shields and let us film your death to elicit the global outcry needed to restrain the israeli ground operation. this is a cunning and immoral military strategy that also doubles as a pr strategy. the only thing that can stop the israeli victory over hamas is palestinian collateral damage that hamas is actively orchestrating. and the higher the palestinian body count, the sooner the west stops netanyahu. the united nations is already serving as hamas surrogates. >> the skill and the speed is bone chilling. gaza is fast becoming a hell hole and is on brink of collapse. >> jesse: so what do we know about the palestinian schnabel well, the people the entire world seems to sympathize for, 40% of palestinians support suicide bombings. that's the highest level of support in the entire world. the palestinians have also chosen hamas to represent the controlling faction of their government. the government charter describes killing jews as one of its highest priorities. so the israeli military is marching into a bombed-out husk of a city riddled with tunnels and terrorists and populated by a palestinian people who not only harbor hamas but are willing to die for hamas. andy stump is a navy seal who spent over 17 years in combat. all right. describe, andy, the challenge operating in this kind of insurgent environment along the civilian population with a global media that's looking for any type of collateral damage. >> i'm going to disagree with your two previous guests. i have trained with and hosted members of some very elite units in the israeli defense force. they are highly capable and trained to deal with wa they are about to encounter. having said that, imagine going for a walk in your neighborhood and think about how little time you actually think about the environment around you. you don't have to worry about where you place your feet, not really worried about angles and then completely flip that situation on its head and look at it from the perspective of the destruction, the three dimensional threats and that every step you need to take you need to not only be sure of your footing but making sure there's a ied in place, one of the most arduous environments they could possibly be entering and at some point it's going to have to be cleared by human beings feet if not inches at a time. >> jesse: and it's not even your neighborhood, because they don't live there. this is a foreign neighborhood and you're going to have snipers, you're going to have maybe kids running up you with suicide invests. how do you navigate that type of scene where you can't differentiate between civilian and sniper? >> the most honest answer that i can give you is that you do the best that you can. i think people operate under the impression that war is very black and white and, in my experience, it's anything but that. the soldiers that are getting ready to go in this environment, they have only hard questions and hard decisions in front of them. and war is not precise. there are going to be mistakes that are going to be made and the soldiers on the ground are going to have to do the absolute best that they possibly can. >> jesse: knowing the take rain that they're facing, do you have any sort of time line that you think they may be able to complete this objective? >> well, it depends on what they're going to want to be accomplishing. i would say from a technology perspective, whether you're using robots or unmanned vehicles overhead you can use your technical advantage with they wereals night vision, you can get an idea what the broad area looks like and perhaps you have to pass through some of these areas before actually securing them so it wouldn't take very long. but for them to actually ensure that there are no longer any threats, they will literally, as i said before, have to walk through this area and clear it inch by inch, foot by foot. and depending on the environment and what remains, the structures versus the rubble, that's going to determine the time line but it's certainly not going to be a matter of minutes or hours, i would say to thoroughly clear it will take days if not longer. >> it looks like a demolition site. very, very tough. thank you very much, we appreciate it, very good insight and we really honor your service as well. >> you're very welcome. thanks for having me. >> jesse: joe biden already waffling on his support for israel. ♪ mptoms?
