for trace gallagher. it's 6:00 a.m. in gaza. this is our continuing breaking news coverage of the war in israel on america's late news "fox news @ night. breaking moments ago, the united stations says it's been informed by israeli military officials that 1.1 million palestinians in order of wadih gaza should relocate to southern gaza in the next 24 hours. that would appear to be a major indication that the hundreds of thousands of israeli troops currently stationed at the bored corps move in very s -- border could move in very soon for a ground invasion aimed at eliminating hamas. israel will keep the lights november g -- lights off in gaza and block aid to palestinians until engagement begins. let's begin with greg palkot, live on the ground in israel. good evening, greg! >> greg: hey, jonathan! yes some striking news you were just quoting. i'm looking at the reuters news agency giving that information about the word that reportedly israel is giving the u.n. that the .1 million palestinians in the north side, the north end of gaza strip need to go to the south end. what's that mean? is this just talking? just to alarm palestinians and hamas militants even more? does it mean they're going to increase their bombardment of gaza or does it mean as you suggested a ground incursion as we've been seeing build up here, the army build up on this side of the gaza strip could be in the offing? i got to tell you, jonathan, we've been here on the ground about three or four days and this is the most intense night of aerial bombardment we have seen from the israeli air force. they've been trying again and again. we're just -- they've been striking again and again. we're just up the coast from the gaza strip. we can hear it and see the glow on the horizon. sometimes the bombs have been coming every five minutes or so something was different tonight. that's why i treat this report from the reuters news agency with a little bit more seriousness than if i wasn't here and seeing what was going on there with my own eyes, our own eyes. we've been seeing tens of thousands of reservists being mobilized and motivated to get into the fight. let's just back up a little bit. the numbers have been going up as well in gaza strip. the palestinian death toll is estimated to be around 1,500 civilians caught in the crossfire. in israel, from the bloody massacre of the hamas militants on saturday, now, it's believed that 1,300 people have died in israel and 150 held hostage. we on thursday put a face to those numbers. we went to the funeral of a 22-year-old lady who was at the music festival that ended up being a massacre thanks to the militants on saturday. take a look at what we saw and what we heard. pure, unfiltered, raw emotion. kim danti hid in the bomb shelter in the festival and died in the blood bath. in attendance, family, friends, loved ones, townspeople coming out to pay their respects to show their love. >> she was full of life, very happy, very intelligent. she just wanted to do everything good in her life. she just went to a party and never came home because those people just murdered them in cold blood without any chance. >> she was an amazing girl with a big smile, always showing love to everyone. >> when she was there, everything was a little bit better. >> greg: jonathan, that sad news just underscoring the very, very high stakes options that are opening up tonight as we wrap up day six of israel's war on hamas. we'll see what develops in the next 24 hours and more. back to you. >> jonathan: greg, thank you very much. back to you over the next couple of hours for any breaking news, and i want to point out the live shot we have there of gaza city -- if we can just show that -- jeff poole, one of our reporters here, very experienced himself in the middle east, was just pointing out how much darker the skyline of gaza city is tonight than it was just 24 hours ago as the power literally goes out in gaza. in the meantime, the american death toll has risen to at least 27 as a result of those hamas terrorist attacks and there are fears that that number could climb. jeff now live with more on that and what the u.s. is doing to evacuate americans from israel. good evening, jeff. >> jeff: sadly, that number has risen. sits at 27 americans killed. those that remain unaccounted for went down from 17 where it's at yesterday and now sits at 14. what's unclear is how many of those who were currently missing are being held hostage by hamas. the national security council as john kirby says the u.s. is working with not only israel but allies in the region like qatar. president biden says he's not giving up home in bringing home americans but divulging details about specific plans would be "bizarre." large number of americans are in israel and are struggling to get home to the u.s. the problem is that many commercial airlines have canceled their flights out. so starting tomorrow, the state department is offering charter flights. the planes will head to european cities offering americans to then catch a connecting flight back to the u.s. john kirby was asked about some reports that indicated americans who are taking these charter flights would eventually have to pay the government back for tickets. >> john, i want to talk about the charter flights. are those free of cost to americans? >> i would defer you to the state department. typically they are, but i don't have the details. they're still working through the details of how they're going to coordinate these. >> jeff: kirby was asked about why military planes aren't being used to evacuate americans. they say they tailor their approach based on what is going on inside the country. >> jonathan: jeff, thank you very much. all right, let's bring in jim, retired army lieutenant colonel and senior counsel to the president at the heritage foundation and doug wachman, professor and director of the ucla center for israel studies. gentlemen, thank you, both, for being here. before we start talking, i just want to play some sound from the israeli ambassador to the u.n. talking on "your world" earlier today. here is the israeli ambassador to the u.n. >> i'm not saying there will be a ground operation and where. the goal is to obliterate their terrorist infrastructure in such a way that these atrocities could not happen again. this is the goal we're focused to achieving. we'll do whatever is needed. >> jonathan: and, jim, since the ambassador spoke on "your world" we've had this word from the u.n. that the israeli military is telling all palestinians in the northern end of the gaza strip to go south. does that strike you as a clear indication a ground invasion is coming? >> yeah. if the goal is the decimation of the hamas infrastructure in leadership, it is kind of difficult to conceive how that could be done without putting forces in on the ground. one thing the israelis have traditionally done is they really have made a serious effort to minimize civilian casualties and in many ways telegraph where their operations are to give innocence a chance to get out of harm's way. of course, that creates the added problem of you're also kind of alerting your enemy where you're going but this is a decision that the israelis made and traditionally, their operations, they do follow that practice. >> jonathan: professor wachman, we've seen before, history tells us, 2006, for instance, the israeli army went into the northern gaza strip after the kidnapping of the soldier gilad. it's terribly, terribly difficult. it won't be without israeli casualties. how difficult of a decision is this from president netanyahu? >> it's a decision he's compelled to make because the israeli public is demanding this. the israeli public are insisting this military operation not be a repeat of the previous military operations that left hamas in place but this is going to be different, because it's necessary to respond to the scale of what hamas has done. so it's fraught with risks to israeli soldiers, to the hostages that hamas keeps and of course the palestinian civilians. i think from prime minister netanyahu's perspective, he has no choice. he's typically avoid sending israeli troops in in the past. this time, he's willing to take the gloves off. >> jonathan: jim, you take the gloves off. you go in on the ground. you're dealing with hamas, an organization that's just revealed to the world all its appalling brutality. is prime minister netanyahu essentially having to say here, "we may lose some of those hostages," because surely hamas is going to carry through with its threat of executing at least some of those hostages if ground troops go in? >> yeah, so we should unpack that, but we also ought to be clear what is game-changing here. so before the israelis had to go physically into gaza to clean out a problem and then what happened is they discovered how difficult that is and so they stopped doing that, and the hamas response to that was rockets. so they would pummel israel with rockets to force them to go back in on the ground and, again, to have this situation. so what do the israelis do? they create iron dome and air defense and essentially they take the missiles. what that enables them to do is protect the israeli population and so then the israelis could decide when they needed to escalate. now what hamas has done is they switched up the game and they found a way to get an attack, israeli innocence on the ground, and, of course, forces this confrontation on the ground. so the hostage thing -- look, this is just very grim what i'm going to say here -- first of all, we know this operation took months, if not longer, to plan. so that means they were taking the hostages -- taking the hostages were preplanned. it'll be very difficult to find them, very difficult to get after them, and, remember, the end stake here is maximum pain for israel so they'll kill the hostages rather than give them upjoup. >> jonathan: [indiscernible] >> an 18-year-long quagmire and lebanon was able to withdraw from hezbollah. there's many dangers of going in. >> jonathan: i could talk to you both for hours. we'll come back to you later. in the meantime, sources are now telling fox news that the u.s. and qatar quietly agreed to refreeze that $6 billion in funds for iran that was previously unfrozen. the senior national correspondent kevin corke is live in d.c. to explain what exactly is happening with the controversial billions. kevin? >> kevin: evening, jonathan? this has been percolating for some time here in washington. finally today, we have managed a clear understanding of what the administration is attempting to do with this money. now, early thursday, congressional lawmakers were told iran would no longer have access to the previously frozen $6 billion which as you know had been parked with the qataris for some time. that money which was to be repatriated to the regime in exchange for hostages will now once again be frozen more or less. it's actually been under close supervision and strict conditions, for that matter, the u.s. demanding it only be used, jonathan, for humanitarian reasons but u.s. officials, at least right now, aren't saying this is a permanent freeze. they obviously say any cash dispersement will have to be done on a case-by-case basis. >> we've always had the option if we wanted it to look at transactions and to make a call about whether we found it valid or not. that has not changed. and even now as you and i are speaking, none of that money has been accessed by anybody. it's still all there. >> kevin: that move coming after harsh criticism by republicans that the administration had given iran a leg up by giving them money they didn't have before. perhaps they could use the money they had to support hamas. that's the theory by some. but for now, it's effectively frozen, john. >> jonathan: thank you very much. let's bring in steve hilton, fox news contributor. steve, biden administration has now effectively frozen these funds again, but it seems to have been -- we seem to be shrouded a little bit in mystery. why so? >> steve: it's all over the place because they're so embem--embarrassed because whate seeing play out is the appeasement of iran we're seeing with this administration from day one. that's part of it. they've been signaling to iran through all sorts of policy moves including the $6 billion in exchange for the hostages they got out. they are desperate for iran to get back in the nuclear deal that they want. they'll do anything bending over backwards to try to persuade them to be the good guys when we know from history they're never the good guys and the only way to actually deal with them properly is to stand up to them, to confront them and to show strength whereas what we've seen from biden all along has just been weakness. >> jonathan: steve, as we talk, we're looking at a live shot of gaza city there. you can see the sun rising as well as the smoke from explosions that we are told has just happened in the last few minutes as israel continues what is a very intense bombardment. you see another flash there of gaza. that's gaza city itself being hit once again in these the early hours of friday morning in gaza. we just hearing another explosion again there. um, steve, um, one thing that also strikes me is the talk we've had on iran's complicity in this. direct involvement? did they say, "go now?" did they train them? did they get a sign off as was reported in beirut last monday? in the end, does it really matter given that we absolutely know that iran funds hamas? hamas would not exist without iran's patronage. >> >> steve: exactly, all the other proxies has bought all of them in that era. we know iran is sponsoring the terrorist organizations and directing their activity. for years, that's why it was so stupid and ridiculous for the biden administration to try to suck up to iran in the last three years or so, but actually what is really shocking to me is still we have these weasel words from the biden administration over iran's role. there doesn't seem to be any urgency to try to get to the bottom of it. we saw an incredibly well-sourced report in the "wall street journal" with specific times and places of meetings where the international head of the revolutionary guard was in beirut coordinating with all of these groups since august to make this happen! and for the administration to be so casual about iran's role is really disgusting! >> jonathan: yep, steve, great to have you here. we'll be back to you throughout the next couple of hours. happening tonight, about two dozen protesters gathered in front of the capital jewish museum in washington d.c. in support of palestinians. several police officers were on site in case of clashes. meanwhile, security is beefing up in the nation's capital and elsewhere across the united states as hamas has reportedly called for a worldwide day of jihad on friday. low-level fencing now surrounds the capitol building in d.c. prominent progressives in congress like cortez and talib were reportedly briefed by capitol police over the threats to them by the israeli government. the chief religion correspondent lauren green is live with how the faith community is responding. lauren? >> reporter: good evening, jonathan. you know, at any one time, there are tens many of them pilgrims from u.s. churches seeing the scriptures come alive in the holy land. when hamas attacked, many groups were stranded. >> i mean it's -- it's -- it's -- it's just devastating. >> reporter: retired dallas pastor reverend george mason traveled to israel last week with a group of multi-religious group of christians, jews and muslims to foster peace. when hamas attacked, many groups struggled to find themselves a way out. they were able to flee to jordan. >> we left jerusalem yesterday morning. jerusalem was becoming more dangerous. security had let us know that it was becoming more dangerous and as a matter of fact on our way out of jerusalem, there were more missiles that were striking the iron dome. >> reporter: now, jerusalem was becoming -- now, here at home, franklin graham you'll see there, head of the billy graham association and samaritan's purse asked for prayers saying the bible instructs us to pray for the peace of jerusalem psalm 122. he says i pray god will protect them from their enemies. more than 80 evangelical leaders signed a statement in support of israel to defend itself saying "we're unified in calling attacks against jewish people especially puzzling as they've been often targeted by their neighbors since god called them as his since the days of abraham." i just heard from pastor mason. he just e-mailed me a few minutes ago to say they're still in jordan and they're hoping to maybe get a flight out on saturday. jonathan? >> jonathan: lauren, thank you very much. and coming up, tensions heating up on college campuses over the israel hamas war. we'll talk to one student who says her college is doing anything about anti-semitism on campus. migraine with qulipta®? and look at me now. you'll never truly forget migraine, but zero-migraine days are possible. don't take if allergic to qulipta®. most common side effects are nausea, constipation, and sleepiness. qulipta®. the forget-you-get migraine medicine™. >> jonathan: tensions on college campuses are having a direct effect on some jewish students particularly at colleges where leadership is not outright condemned the terrorist attacks by hamas. we're continuing to look at a live picture from gaza city there on the israeli bombardment that is ongoing. with us now, lisa and her daughter elizabeth who is a senior at pitzer college, part of the clairemont colleges here in southern california. before we talk to both of you, lisa and elizabeth, i want to point out we have asked the pitzer president whom you're about to criticize to join our discussion tonight. i e-mailed him twice personally we didn't get any reply to those requests. first to elizabeth, you're on campus at pitzer right now, elizabeth and i understand you're essentially hiding in your dorm room because of what is to you a disturbing protest by students for justice in palestine? >> correct, there are protests like this happening across the country today where students are chanting things that are blatantly violent statements that make jewish students feel so uncomfortable we can't even leave our rooms. >> jonathan: else beth, what do you think the president at pitzer should be doing and saying? >> the president should do what the university of irvine has done, uc irvine, what universities like university of florida has done which is strongly condemn terrorism and condemn the loss of innocent life as a result. this isn't theoretical. this isn't political. most jewish students have families and loved ones overseas who are suffering right now. our safety is at risk because of our peers who are not only comfortable but perhaps even ok with our bloodshed if it means their ideological -- >> john: let's look at the one statement that the president put out in which he had said he wanted to "express my deepest concerns and condolences for the many hundreds of lives of israelis, palestinians and others lost and thousands injured over the past few days in gaza and israel." no condemnation anywhere in that statement from the hamas terrorist attack. compare that to the university of arizona president who talked about the "horrendous acts of terrorism by ham that's israel targeted at innocent civilians including children." the nyu board chair, evan chessler and president linda g. mills talked about the "indiscriminate killing of civilians and the taking of hostages including children and the elderly." and they said, "it is rep prehencable," but -- reprehensible," but the president at your school said "condolences to everybody!" i feel bad for you. >> he's morally vacate. he equivocate and puts context to things. if you can't identify evil and say what it is -- they burned babies, they decapitated them, they raped women, they murdered innocent -- 1,300 now -- for the only crime of being jewish and the only homeland that is jewish. so if he can't stand up for morality, for decency and have moral clarity y, why is the president of a university? >> jonathan: your point, lisa, you can condemn horrific acts -- and there's no doubt these were absolutely some of the most barbaric acts we've ever seen on the face of the earth -- you can condemn those without offending ordinary palestinians? >> well, of course, because you can make the distinction but you have to state the facts, and he's unwilling to do it. he wants to basically have it all ways and there's -- it's -- it's -- it's just mush. his statement was offensive. it was morally repugnant because it equivocated. i pleaded with him. my husband sent a heartfelt e-mail. i sent one. i made calls. they have ignored us. i got a call today from the chief of staff, nice guy, but, you know, doesn't help, doesn't change anything. you send your kids to college because you trust the adults. where's the moral campus? where's his backbone? >> jonathan: when you see the things we've seen, and unfortunately we've seen horrific things, there is no moral equivalence here. once again, i'd like to point out, lisa, thank you, elizabeth, thank you. we wish you some comfort. i know your parents are on the way to pick up from campus as soon as they get off the set here but, again, i want to point out, we asked president thacker of pitzer college to join us tonight and give us a statement we didn't hear anything back. in the meantime as you can see there in gaza city dawn is breaking there in israel. day seven of the war in hamas rages on. we're back after the break. r? someone who could get to the magic number of 217. the majority leader steve scalise was the nominee of the republican caucus. he only had 113 votes, and he wasn't in a strong position. he was trying to work the room to try to figure out if he could get votes and sure up that position but the republican caucus was not budging. some people were loyal to jim jordan. other people say they want to go back to kevin mccarthy. so the republicans are a bit in chaos now. so this evening, steve scalise withdrew his name and now the process starts to find it in earnest. it's a real question whether they said "it's up to the conference." but the bottom line is you still have to get to that number, 217. and, remember, there were eight republicans who voted to take kevin mccarthy out of the office for the first time in the history of our country. they have an uphill battle here. they're going to either have to say the middle east situation is so intense that we need to get to a speaker and let's either get mccarthy, let's go to jordan or someone else we're not even talking about. they can nominate anybody as long as they get around all of the numbers. and democrats, it doesn't look like any of them are going to shed from the 208 that stayed together and voted for hakeem jeffries. >> jonathan: bret, getting to the situation in the middle east, it's interesting the biden administration trying to walk a line t seems, on iran, their potential involvement in the planning of this and funding, of course, of this horrible hamas terrorist attack. and now whether or not we're wee closely monitoring the $6 billion in funds. how difficult of a situation is this for president biden? >> bret: it's sticky on the iran issue. first, the president is getting a lot of credit for the speeches he's delivered over the last couple of days sticking with israel, being very nonequivocating as far as this is a two-sided deal. this saying it's terrorism versus civilians and also for secretary of state anthony blinken being side-by-side with the israeli prime minister today and the speech he delivered. they're getting credit for that from the israelis and others, even from republicans on the hill. on the iran issue, there's this weird focus on the $6 billion, a part of the hostage exchange to get americans out. they say not a single dollar came from that. they spent days defending that. now, we have learned and confirmed that it is being frozen again and not going to iran, a deal between the u.s. and qatar, but in the broader picture, the easing of sanctions that allowed iran to sell billions and billions of dollars of joel to -- oil to other countries and china and that money funneling to hamas. the "wall street journal" nailed it today. >> jonathan: the considerations brought about by this war that israel now has against hamas, bret, what does it do for israel's diplomatic process it was making with the saudi arabians? you had the fascinating interview. you just returned from the prime minister. seems now he's in a difficult position domestically to keep going with those talks. are they dead in the water now? >> bret: they're definitely paused. it was interesting that the saudis put out a statement that the crowned prince had a phone call with the iranian president. that's not a usual conversation in this environment, however, when i talked to him in saudi arabia, he did say they were very close to normalization with israel. then i flew from there and interviewed the israeli prime minister where he reiterated, we're very close off camera and on camera. both men said they believed it was going to be earth-shaking and a change. i'm not sure it's dead in the long-term, but it's definitely dead in the short-term as whatever happens with israel pushing into gaza and trying to annihilate hamas happens and how the world reacts to that, because it's going to be very ugly and very public. >> jonathan: yes, so much to flay out -- play out that none of us has any idea how it's going to effect the geo political situation in the long run. let's get to your book, bret, what will be bret baier's 365th "new york times" best seller, "to rescue the constitution." it's a real portrait of a divided america, bret. any comparisons with the way we are now? >> bret: well, yes! in fact, i make that comparison in the beginning and in the end of the book. it's the sixth book. it's the fifth in the presidential series. you know, i try to in this blueprint look at a soda straw moment in history and focus on that, maybe something that's been overlooked and then see how a leader gets to that and what it means for today and this moment is actually after the revolutionary war, the british are defeated -- sorry, jonathan -- and america is trying, you know, to move on, but they can't. they're really divided and there's a lot of in-fighting. the articles of confederation tried to stitch it altogether, but it's not working, and, in fact, a large population at that time really wants to go back to british rule. they say, forget it! it's not working. at this moment is when the constitutional convention starts in the summer of 1787, and they tap the leader of the revolutionary army, george washington, and his presence enabling the descent to get together and find common ground gets to a document, eventually ratifies that document which he calls a miracle and he goes onto become the first american president, without washington. arguably, we wouldn't have a country without washington. this narrative puts you in the room in the way i've done in the previous books. >> jonathan: it's a great read and a great historical story especially for someone like me who grew up in the british education system where we glossed over that pesky independence thing. bret, seems to me there's a message we can perhaps take for today, a message of optimism that in troubled times, a great leader can emerge and by goodness, we need one of those right now, it seems. >> bret: yeah, we can use a washington right now. i do think i'd take from the research and the writing some hope that there have been really dark times in our history and we're built on dissent, dissent is baked in the cake of who we are. as is union and what washington managed to do was mess the dissent with the union and -- mesh the dissent with the union and get to a place where the ball could move forward. i think it's possible. we haven't seen a lot of those leaders step up, but in our history when we needed one, they did so we'll see if that continues to happen. >> jonathan: let's hope so. congratulations on what is another great book, bret, and sure to be f it isn't already in preorder, a "new york times" #1 best seller. bret baier, anchor of "special report." jonathan hunt in for trace gallagher. it's midnight on the east coast, 9:00 here in los angeles, 7:00 a.m. in gaza, and this is our continuing breaking news coverage of the war in israel on america's late news, "fox news @ night." explosions rocking the gaza strip in another night of heavy israeli bombardment. also breaking tonight, the united nations says it's been informed by israeli military officials that all 1.1 million palestinians in the northern gaza strip should relocate to southern gaza in the next 24 hours, that would appear to a major indication that the hundreds of thousands of israeli troops currently stationed at the border could move in very soon for a ground invasion that would be aimed at eliminating hamas. but a hamas official has reportedly said calls to relocate are fake propaganda and hamas has asked their citizens to stay put. in the meantime, hostages including a number of americans remain in captivity tonight with israel saying they will keep the lights off in gaza and block any aid to the palestinians until those hostages are released. let's begin with the senior foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot who is live on the ground in israel. greg, this warning to the u.n. it should warn palestinians in the northern end of the gaza strip to move south, what do we make of that? does that mean the ground invasion is coming within hours? >> greg: jonathan, i think we ought to be very careful with this warning, but we have to look at it very hard. we have just gotten through what we believe is the most intensive night of airstrikes on gaza. sometimes the bombings were coming from the israeli air force every five or 10 minutes. the haze, the clouds of smoke are still hanging over the gaza strip from this unrelenting bombardment by israel by the hamas militant infrastructure. now, to that report, it's a fact that the u.n. is widely quoted as saying they were told just before midnight local time by the israeli defense force and the israeli ministry of defense that, yes, 1.1 million gazans should move from 40% of the gaza strip down below a canal a wetland that runs through the gaza strip to the southern part. what does this mean? number one, it could just be covering their bases from a lot of criticism that israel has received for some very, very heavy bombing in the gaza strip. it could be that, number one. number two, it could be a precursor to even heavier bombardment. israel could say, hey, we gave you the warning and we're going to follow through on it. or, number three t could be the leading edge of what we've been seeing, a huge build up of armor, tanks, artillery and tens of thousands of reservists on this side a precursor to a land invasion. i need to be very careful about that, though. a lot of people still don't think that israel is ready conceptually or physically for that kind of an invasion, especially in next 24 hours. this is definitely a very important development, jonathan jon we -- development, jonathan. >> jonathan: we shall see, thank you, greg. i'm interested in your take on the mood in israel now. do you find in your conversations that some of those moderates in israel are saying now how can we ever have that kind of solution if hamas is willing to carry out this brutal attack? is there a change? >> greg: there's a hardening of attitudes and opinions here regarding at least elements of the palestinians present around israel. in fact, we've seen the kind of determination here in the last couple of days that we witnessed back in the united states after 9/11. it's that scale of terror attack that happened here comparable to 2001. so, yes, we're hearing people saying, number one, they're determined to get involved. number two, they have huge reservations now about at least factions in the palestinian population and that's definitely hamas militants and, three, just outrage of what we've seen in the past six days here, especially over the weekend, the bloody massacres that has been witnessed that left now over 1,300 people here in israel dead and has resulted in 1,500 over on the gaza strip side and also, of course, the hostages and the brutal way some of those individuals were killed and some of them were taken over to gaza. so, yes, a hardening of positions. a determination of attitudes towards something that has to be done over there. what exactly form that will take and the speed of that remains to be seen, but definitely there is action on the ground. there's action in the skies and there's frankly action on the seas as well. jonathan? >> jonathan: greg, back in 2006, we had the kidnapping of the israeli soldier just outside of the gaza strip taken in there. three weeks i think it was later, hezbollah took advantage of what was then a grand incursion into gaza to start essentially a war in northern israel by firing rockets from their bases in lebanon. how concerned is the israeli government now that hezbollah could get involved again here? >> greg: jonathan, that's a nightmare scenario a multi-front war. israel is very busy now. it's refocusing most of its troops, taking many out of the west bank where it's been dealing with unrest there over the last several months. last several months have seen a lot of civil unrest here in israel, protest against actions by the netanyahu administration regarding judicial reform, and, yes, if there's action on the north side which we've seen -- we've seen skirmishes, we've seen israeli soldiers killed, we've seen hezbollah militants killed. we've seen action there. we've seen unrest in the west bank. we've seen shootings in jerusalem and we saw that very dramatic attack by the israeli air force against syrian air force in damascus and aleppo seen as a funnel point as aid and militant munitions from iran to go into gaza and hezbollah. we're seeing the rumblings of a multi-front war. still, our focus has to be on what is happening right here, right now and it could be something very big, jonathan. >> jonathan: greg, we're lucky to have someone as experienced as you and your producer, tim sandhouse, there to guide us through all of this. thank you very much, greg. the american death toll, in the meantime, has risen to at least 27 as the war rages on. there are fears that number could climb. jeff is live with us in studio with more on that and what the u.s. is doing to evacuate americans from israel. jeff? >> jeff: jonathan, unfortunately that number of americans who's been killed has gone up to 27 and while those remain unaccounted for went down from 17 to where it now sits at 14, what is unclear is how many of those who are currently missing are being held hostage by hamas? national security council's john kirby says the u.s. is working with not only israel but allies in the region like qatar. president biden says he's not given up hope bringing missing americans home, but he says divulging any details about specific plans would be "bizarre." there are also a large number of americans who are currently in israel but are struggling to return home. the problem, many commercial airlines have canceled their flights out. so starting tomorrow, the state department is offering charter flights. the planes will head to european cities offering americans a chance to then catch a connecting flight back to the u.s. john kirby was asked about how some reports indicated that americans who took the charter flights would eventually have to pay back the government for the tickets. >> john, i want to comments on the charter flights. are those free of cost to american citizens now? >> i would refer you to the state department. typically they are, but i -- i don't have -- they're still working through the details on how they're going to coordinate these. >> jeff: kirby was asked on why military planes weren't being used to evacuate americans. he says they tailor their approach on what is going on geographically within the country. tel aviv airport has been opened since the fighting started. delta, american and united canceled flights to the area for an extended period of time. >> jonathan: the time period could be extended for a long period of time if a grand invasion happens. let's now speak to the deputy mayor of jerusalem and the founder and president of the alma research and education center in northern israel. mayor, first to you. talk to me a little bit about the mood in jerusalem, a city that has seen so much violence and has been through so much, but for everybody, this is just a different level it seems. >> absolutely. i moved to israel in the middle of the second. [indiscernible] 22 years ago. there were bombs going off in buses and cafes almost weekly. every other week, there was something really horrible going on. this feels worse. i don't know how to explain it. now, we're concerned today. it's friday. and this is the day where muslims come to pray in the mosque and temple mount. yesterday, wade shoot attack in a -- we had a shooting attack in a police station that left a police officer badly injured. and we have gotten reports -- i just got reports that the hamas are asking all of their people to come and fight to kill the police officers on temple mount. they're calling this a day of rage. we're very concerned. there's a tense quiet right now that there'll be riots and problems on temple mount today. we could have closed it but we decided to keep the freedom of worship we have here for all religions, so we're opening it, of course, as it always is and we're re-enforcing police forces. >> jonathan: yes, it's going to be a very intense few days, perhaps weeks, perhaps even months in jerusalem, of course. temple mount at the center of it all. lieutenant colonel, let me come to you. you're in northern israel. how tense is it there? we were just talking to our reporter in southern israel about it. the prospect of hezbollah entering this war and bringing it to the north as well. how worrying is that for people like you who are in northern israel? >> extremely worrying. extremely worrying. i can tell you that everybody is saying that hamas is isis, ok? the mastermind is iran. yesterday, the iranian foreign minister, the architect of this attack came to lebanon and met with hezbollah, hamas and palestinian islamic jihadis. this man should not be trusted. he's a war criminal. and the plan was to create a multi-front situation attack against the state of israel from gaza and from elsewhere and it was mentioned jerusalem as another front actually. i can tell you, by the way, the excitement to participate in the raid today is not only in jerusalem. we've seen this in the galley. i know we were working over here with the local arabs to make sure they will not go out to the streets. and i hope everything will go quiet today in the galley as well. this excitement came -- this incitement came to my efederal the mastermind that -- came to this by the mastermind. >> jonathan: is this the end of the two-state solution that everybody has talked about for so many years? >> look, i think the palestinians themselves have contributed greatly to the fact we're not even talking about a two-state solution. let me tell you, many palestinians come to me and tell me they don't believe anymore in a two-state solution because of the fact that the palestinian leadership is not capable of leading their people to anything positive. they have billions of dollars in aid, and they don't build schools and they don't build hospitals. they either enrich themselves or are building tunnels and so i don't think the talk now is about a two-state solution. the talk should be that when are the palestinians going to get the leadership that they deserve? >> jonathan: lieutenant colonel, real quickly in 10 seconds if you can, is the two-state solution dead? >> we are now fighting and defending our lives. how can you talk about solutions? i don't understand! we're sleeping next to a monster here in the south and in the north! let's deal with that first and then talk about solutions! >> jonathan: yeah. the deputy mayor of jerusalem and lieutenant colonel, it's a pleasure to talk to you both. i'm sure we will talk to you again over the days and weeks to come. thank you, both, so much. sources are now telling fox news that the u.s. and qatar quietly agreed to refreeze that $6 billion in funds for iran that was previously unfrozen. the senior national correspondent kevin corke is live in d.c. to explain what exactly is happening with those controversial billions. kevin, over to you. it's difficult? >> kevin: it frankly s jonathan. it's a delicate balance. on the one hand, it's been percolating here in washington for some time that we wanted to know what the government might do with this money especially given what's transpired in gaza and israel. it appears we have a slightly clearer idea of what they're attempting to do. early thursday, congressional lawmakers were told they would no longer have access to the previously frozen $6 billion which has been parked with the qataris for a bit of time. that money was originally supposed to be refay treeiated to the -- repatriated to the regime in exchange for the hostages. it's been under close supervision and incredibly strict conditions. it could only be used for humanitarian purposes. at this hour, u.s. officials are not describing the money as permanently frozen but they do believe that any cash that will come out of it will have to be looks at -- looked at very carefully and on a case-by-case basis. >> we always had the option, if we wanted it, to look at transactions and to make a call about whether we found it valid or not. that has not changed. and even now as you and i are speaking, none of that money has been assessed by -- accessed by anybody. it's still all there. >> kevin: that's an important data point. the money is still all there. the move comes after incredibly intense criticism in particular from congressional republicans that it's the biden administration that gave that vast sum of money, they freed it up and gave it to the folks in iran and then they were able to perhaps use the money they had to perhaps assist hamas. again, that's a lot of speculation, jonathan, but the bottom line here is there needs to be a tight reign over that money and it appears right now that is, once again, the case. >> jonathan: kevin, thank you so much. let's bring in fox news contributor steve hilton now. steve, good to have you back here. iran, we talked about the money. we know that iran funds hamas. we know iran funds his bowl as --hezbollah as well. we're dealing with organizations here that are pure evil. so what do we do? the israelis want to go in and smash them in gaza, destroy hamas, but it's the kind of organization that just breeds a new breed, a new generation of leaders. how do you do it in the long term? >> first of all, let's just remember who else funds hamas? we do. the biden administration. nevermind the $6 billion. nevermind the lifting of the sanctions which, of course, has enabled iran to bring in the money they could then transfer to hamas because of the biden administration's desire to keep gas prices down because of their own stupid energy policy. nevermind all of that. the state department, these are documents that have been published, washington free beacon had the story, the state department made a request to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars directly from us to hamas. as it made the request, it said in its own documents to the treasury that there is a risk that this money could go to fund terrorism. our state department under the biden administration said we've been funding hamas. why? because there's been this narrative pushed by hamas that actually they're a social welfare organization, trying to do things to help their people -- which is exactly the opposite of the truth. they've been crushing the welfare of their people. what have they actually been doing with the money from iran and from the u.s. assisting the terrorist front? >> jonathan: i was there in 2006 when the kidnapping occurred. hamas was elected in 2007 because they were doing a lot of social work, giving people a lot that they didn't have. this is clearly a destruction of israel. now, they're telling their people ignore those warnings from the israeli military to move south from gaza. stay in the line of fire. essentially, they're telling their people to stand there and get killed. >> yes, because they're a death cult. that's the heart of who these people are. i mean, how can you describe them as anything else when we see what they've done to babies and toddlers and civilians? and now their own people they want to do that too, because they're extremists. utterly, extremists doesn't even capture it. this ideology, this total distortion of islam, nothing really to do with islam. they use the language of islam, but it's totally extreme. it's an ideology of death at its heart. it's a death cult. >> jonathan: how do you tackle that ideology, though, steve? this is always the issue. you could kill the leadership, but killing that ideology is so much more difficult. we had it with bin laden. >> steve: that's exactly the right comparison. that's when we first started to realize that over the decades actually, during the 20th century, the emergence of this radical strain of islam, again, real muslims, they totally denounce it. it morphs into different ways, different plays. there's one thing in common, it typically arises when there's poverty, lack of education and ignorance. they breed on that. whilest you have to directly confront it as is happening right now with the israelis and we should stand with them in that, you have to directly confront the ideology, make sure everyone understands this has nothing to do with islam, make sure you're active in that fight, but also continue to work to lift people out of poverty, to make these failed states into countries that actually can operate in a civilized manner. we can't do that. we saw the failure of trying to do that from outside. we have to encourage them to do it for themselves so that there's no place for these hateful death cults and this kind of ideology to grow. >> jonathan: really briefly, can we destroy that? can we win? we, the democratic peoples of the world? >> eventually, but you have to keep fighting. there's no substitute for that. even if we took the view that we will never permanently defeat it, that doesn't mean you give up in the moment. you have to keep fighting the battle every time this rears its head. you have to fight it. >> jonathan: steve, great to have you here, as always. thank you, much. steve hilton. coming up, our continuing coverage of the breaking news in israel as you look live at gaza city 7:21 friday morning. ♪ [flight attendant alert] [baby crying] [snoring] [luggage rattling] [baby crying] ♪ dramatic music ♪ ♪ upbeat music begins ♪ for everyone who's endured the bad seat, finally, sweet, sweet redemption. the lexus tx. three-row luxury that treats every seat like the best seat. >> jim: it certainly doesn't sound like they're bluffing. again, you have to go back to the state of objective which is to really eliminate hamas' capability to offensive operations. it does seem difficult to see how that could be happening without putting forces in on the ground. now, we have to say this isn't good for the hostages, right? now, remember, these operations were planned for months, if not years. they -- obviously hostage taking was part of the plan, which means they're going to hide these people as best they can. these are hostages like munich olympics, right? they're there to humiliate the israelis and the americans, so they don't -- it's not about trade to them or -- they don't care if they die. and so it's going to be very, very difficult to do rescue operations. >> jonathan: jim, it strikes me that this operation, this terrorist attack by hamas was so long in the planning that it seems inconceivable they wouldn't have planned for what comes next, so presumably, hamas has some sort of operation itself planned to deal with an israeli ground invasion. they're not completely stupid. they know that they would bring this on themselves through some acts of barbarity, don't they? what is their plan? >> their plan is to get their butt kicked. they're going to try to take down as many israelis as they can. when the rubble falls in urban fighting, it's the most difficult place and intense place for the manpower you need. you're going to take a lot of casualties. but i think the answer is why would they do this? the sans they're not independent actors. particularly if we see a second front open up, we'll see iran is behind this. what's the plan? iran wants to greatly humiliate the united states and weaken israel. weaken israel, humiliate the u.s., declare a breakout. after the election, a president is faced with the reality of an iranian nuclear state. i think that's the plan and the most logical explanation. >> jonathan: netanyahu faces a terrible future here over the next few weeks and months, jim, purely because there's no way a ground invasion happens without israeli casualties. i was there in 2006 when the israelis went in the hamas fighters build these huge sand berms that the israeli tanks then have to go over. they expose the underbelly. they've got all the rockets. they fire straight into those tanks. there will be israeli casualties that prime minister netanyahu will have to address the people about, will it not? >> yeah, but this is more like '73. if you look at the number of israeli casualties and you look proportionally, 9/11 is small, right? we have 330 million people and we had 3,000 casualties. proportionately, the israelis have taken much bigger casualties. in their own backyard, they've been murdered. so i think this'll be like 73. they'll get through the violent -- who knows what the politics look like after but israel really doesn't have an option. if you can't defend yourself, then you are always at risk, and, yeah, there's no good end here. we know iran is behind this and they're just sitting fat and happy back there but the reality is if israel can't demonstrate it could defend itself, it will always be at risk. >> jonathan: very good points, jim, as always. so great to have you here. jim, thank you so much for being with us tonight. emotions are running high on college and university campuses as students clash over the war in israel. here is molly line with that story from harvard university in cambridge, massachusetts. >> reporter: dubbed a day of resistance, nationwide protests called for by the national students for justice in palestine organization turned into clashes at some universities including unc chapel hill in north carolina. video captures a jewish professors who joined pro-israel counterprotesters being pushed. >> those people are your support, people that healed hundreds of people, kids, babies. >> reporter: the online poster touting the call to action features a paraglider, one of the means hamas used to infiltrate israel, slaughter hundreds and take hostages. one young woman attending the resistance rally at arizona state university remained unapologetic in her support. >> you guys are associating with hamas as a terrorist organization. it's a resistance. it's a resistance movement. we need to stand behind it! >> reporter: several student organizations that originally signed onto a joint statement placing blame on israel for the attacks are now seeking to retract their support as business leaders contemplate blacklisting students. billionaire hedge fund founder bill ahman writing, "i've been asked by a number of ceo's at harvard that we would list the members of each of the harvard organizations that have issued the letter assigning sole responsibility for hamas' heinous acts to israel so as to ensure none of us inadvertently hire any of their members." today's support for israel is on display at harvard yard where posters show kidnapped hostages as one sophomore laments the divide. >> there's nothing victorious about the beheading of children or the kidnapping of young woman or elderly people. >> reporter: protests continue throughout the day. more are scheduled for tomorrow. jonathan?
