injuring thousands more in taking israeli soldiers and citizens hostage. including women and children. it was barbaric a rather than minimize citizen casualties hamas targeted civilians including americans. the attack was launched by land, sea, and air seemed to catch one of the world's most battle ready countries by surprise. was really leader benjamin netanyahu promise a devastating response israel is in the process of delivering that response. netanyahu also told his country to prepare for war. perhaps protracted war as israeli defense forces will likely go door to door looking for kidnapped citizens and soldiers. we begin tonight with trey yingst live in israel what is the latest. >> the islamic jihad entered israel fired on the border committees taking some hostage and executing others. this is what took place over the past 48 hours per the israeli response hasn't started though this just appears to be the beginning. overhead right now their fighter jets in the skies. they are firing on hamas positions along the gaza border. hamas deals still control some territory in southern israel. it's making extremely difficult to begin the second phase of their operation. they first have to make sure all palestinians are out of israeli territory. moving forward basically staging on the border that's much of what we saw today. israeli tanks and apcs soldiers reservists military said more than what her thousand venture guys that when the word doesn't come. it's expected to come in the hours or days but israel will likely in the next few days be inside gaza what a really prime minister benjamin netanyahu he described as an operation to eradicate from gaza with the military and political wing of this organization. if you put your finger on it. there are populated areas in the world with nearly 2 million people though have to work carefully romero the hostages that turned into prisoners of war are israeli civilians and soldiers. they started this initial assault on southern israel. noncombatant and innocent bystanders. people living along the community women and children can be dragged out of bed and murdered. those who survived were dragged there are sirens we ha you have one me to run to the shelter. so i got into the shelter of my four children and remain there for the largest part of the morning. we had no idea what we were looking at a massacre. we were looking at a border breach. i cannot begin to tell you how shocked where and traumatize the country is. the irony is a week ago we were all pondering whether it could happen again. that was also a surprise attack 50 years ago. and of course different people have different opinions. little did we know a short week later we' would be looking at something similar? trey: madam mayor i was in your city a little over a year ago. i can tell you war was the last thing on my mind. and your beautiful city the israeli people are surrounded by enemies. it is a success quite frankly when a neighbor merely agreed to agrees torecognize your right t. you mention the word traumatize i cannot imagine the eyes of israelis on israel that must shock the israeli people. but not having soldiers at the border from dealing with them the terrorists were saying at thatwent into people's homes. they went and massacred and executed people in their homes for their children in their beds. old ladies in their bed. randomly put people in this for the 3000 upon this dance party they randomly executed them in this field. nobody thought we would see images like this in israel ever. you have to ask yourself what happened? how did they get in? how did they manage to do this? israel has a very secure border. israel has won the best armies in the world. we have one of the best technologies of defense in the world. what happened? trey: you were the best intelligence community's intelligence agencies in the world. the united states is not a country where we fear rockets and invasions. if there's a siren going off here it is a tornado not a missile coming in. so psychologically i know your country is used to being surrounded by enemies. but psychologically how do you prepare for what looks like it may be a protracted war? x yes look at what circumstances we are preparing for this. we were in the process of making peace with saudi arabia. unlesslost through soup made pee with four different arab/muslim countries. we have peace with jordan and egypt. israel's hand is always outstretched for peace and in the last three years we have come a long way and to big normalize into the region. we were getting excited about saudi arabia at which was peace being broken by the united states. in my big up to this nightmare. we back up to a war. my friend's son has been missing for 36 hours. all of my friends children have been called up by two children in the army. it is a nightmare. trey: you mention it madam mayor how close you were with peace with saudi arabia. you already had historic peace agreements. at already look at that's going to be peace and a part of the world where it had not known at peace. i makes me wonder who benefits from war and chaos between israel and its neighbors? i want benefits from seeing doing this. what if it might be i wrong to hit the nail on the head for between israel and saudi arabia the uae and bahrain. there already annoyed about this. we must understand hamas and hezbollah are the long arms of a round they are the puppets of iran. i wrong is the big puppetmaster which is in my opinion has coordinated this whole thing. correct miand turned to the very most when that world seems like it is on fire. that's the way it seems right now. jennifer, this attack certainly seemed to catch israel off guard. they are not a nation usually is usuallysurprised but what aru hearing about the attack on israel's response what is the latest? let's try first of all you are right. not only is shocking the intelligence failure the fact is fighting and 22 parts of israel. there are more than 3000 rockets that hit jerusalem which rarely gets hit. so the descriptions i called a friend in israel and spoke to him this morning. had heard horror stories about cousins who actually went into their safe room inside their house near the gaza strip wheree they were in an israeli and they were inside with their children in their safe room. and hamas came to the door of the safer safe room it is a stel plated door and tried to fire on the door to open it. somehow they miraculously survived a state in the safe room for 11 hours but the trend to set the house on fire. there was story upon story of this occurring. we just learned for americans have been killed and the attacks. i expect that number will rise. lawmakers have been told by the national security council that at least four americans have been killed. what the pentagon has done in recent hours, lloyd austin the defense secretary has had his second phone call with his counterpart his israeli counterpart. the pentagon has begun moving the uss gerald r ford carrier strike group to the eastern mediteeasternmediterranean for s u.s. navy aircraft carrier as well as a guided missile cruiser uss normandy as well as the guided missile destroyer uss thomas. uss remarks, uss carney and uss roosevelt. since comp officials who i've spoken to said there also sitting air force had a 10 fighter aircraft squadrons to the region. the f35 squadron was set this summer for the eye iranian were harassing oil tankers at the golf on the iranian seem to have gotten the message. this conflict could spread and iran could launch proxy fights with hezbollah there are u.s. troops all across the middle east who are vulnerable positions if it decides to launch with malicious against those troops. >> you mention iran several times for this reporting today iran played a central role in helping to plan and execute this series of attacks. and integrally involved in playing the attacks and if so there's going to be a response by israel i would imagine. but you are the expert, what do you think? >> when i was based in israel from 1999 until 2007. 2002 i broke a story that got a lot of attention at the time. it was a shipment of iranian weapons en route to the gaza strip. the israeli navy intercepted it in the red sea it included 50 tons of small arms weaponry. it was $100 million worth of weapons. i interviewed the captain of that ship was taken into israeli custody still in israeli prison. this funding of hamas by iran the shipment of weapons and the attempt to disrupt any sort of peace in israel has been going on at least in my lifetime since 2002. it really goes prior to that that was the first i saw it with my own eyes. iran is a huge factor here. look at what the spiritual leader said last week about the potential deal -- make the peace deal between saudi arabia and israel. he bowed at that time that deal would not go through. that was a veiled threat that should've been taken seriously at that time. iran has i its fingerprints the funding of hezbollah is well documented. the thousands of rockets that are in the gaza strip that hamas has hezbollah has thousands of rockets i could rain down on northern israel. when i was in israel as a reporter for fox news in the summer of 2006 thousands of rockets were fired into northern israel during a 34 day war between hezbollah and israel which followed i will remind you two soldiers kidnapped by hezbollah on the border of the north. now you have more than 100 hostages israeli women, children, elderly women as well as soldiers being held down in the gaza strip. this could go on for some time for the gaza strip i have been there before. spent months at a time and they gaza strip 2.3 million people it is a small alley and finding those hostages is going to be very, very difficult. israel had one soldier kidnapped back in 2006 it took five years for them to negotiate a release and to find him. this is not going to be easy. it's not going to be fast for that u.s. aircraft carrier and other strike group members of the strike group that are in the eastern mediterranean is to send a very strong signal to iran not to launch any more attacks. not to allow its proxies for any adventurism at this point. besides i hope they are watching. or else there is going to be not just conflict in almost unprecedented. you have known oars, would not attacks god knows we've known a lot of terror and terrorism. what israel is experiencing at this moment the massacre especially with civilians in the south was very extraordinary but actually the united arab emirates just came out reprimanding the attackers the other arab countries less clearly, that is very true. what i want to emphasize with your permission is the fact that the perpetrators went into civilian homes. knocking down doors appeared taking women, children, families hostage sprayed not only in their own homes, actually taking them over the border, kidnapping them. not to mention raping women, having them naked in the streets. complete and utter barbarism. this is something israel has never seen before. when i must tell you the hearts and minds of all is really so forget all israelis send their children to obligatory army service. this is very, very difficult time for every single israeli citizen. >> i want you to give us a sense of what is happening in the government. he says this is war and it may last a long time. you so aptly noted israel is in some parts of the world criticized for targeting hezbollah or hamas sites they hide within the citizen community. they are the ones who put citizens at risk and yet israel is criticized here hamas targeted citizens as you noted they went after citizens specifically. give us an idea of what is going on with the netanyahu administration and the response rate. >> first of all let's just make sure everyone understands the hamas is holding hostage many of their own people too. in fact this is a very undemocratic cruel, barbaric regime that holds two-point to million palestinians basically hostage despite a lot of funding brought from international arena. affect the current coalition also it w wasn't planning aftere holidays to open up and give permits to working israel to palestinians in the west bank from gaza as well. in fact qatar is feeding this monster constantly with funding, the most important thing is something the government -- the current government but other governments previous governments in israel have said again and again the one mastermind between this whole entire thing is iran. it has slowly but surely. this is very important to understand, systematically funded and trained hezbollah in the north. hamas in the north as well hamas in the south and gossiper infiltrates jordan very few people speak about it. jordan is a very important enclave for stability for the united states and the world. not just for israel. it is also very, very active in the west bank. it is arming, funding, training leaked terrorism in the west bank. not only hamas but also islamic jihad. what's also trying to reach out to arab israeli citizens within israel and it is when citing an arabic arab israelis within then israel is trying to encompass israel from all sides fun to really break down this country. there is no issue of negotiation. there is no issue of talking about anything. i hope the world understands this phenomenon. there are very dark very clearly stated they want the destruction of this country. and they are acting accordingly. what we have seen in the last few days i cannot even tell you. it is barbaric. they are dragging women old holocaust survivor 84-year-old women and parading them as if this is something to be proud of. holding guns they have made them put on their bodies. it is unreal. i cannot even convey -- it is truly a tragedy. trey: there is another tragedy too. while iran is reeking this in >> it was horrific. we are used to see rockets come from gaza this is much different. this was her plan, sea, air. this had to be planned for quite some time anyone who tells you iran is not involved, they are lying to you. we have never seen anything like this in 50 years but it's very concerning to me because the attack on civilians, on children. for americans as we know now have been killed. others have been kidnapped. you've got to put this in perspective for those who have not been to israel. it is not a big country for the population is about 9 million is more than 700 israelis have been murdered. that would be the equivalent of about 25000 americans getting murdered. this is my concern. we have to destroy it hamas it's a terrorist organization is not something you have to go in and try to beat it back. it has to be destroyed. the buildup to allow this to happen the appeasement from this administration. the shocking nest on those of on the other side of the aisle and may she try to have an anti- anc events. i shut down the room she wanted to hold it in part she called israel from eight terrorist states. the other thing she recently did she put out a press release today literally saying a part of this is caused because americans provide resources to israel. and you know what? what caused hamas to do this act of barbarism now if it was not the fear of peace w was saudi arabia what was it? >> know it was precisely that too. good to be with you. they key peace deal in the middle east the ones the abraham accord set up is the deal between saudi arabia and israel. and when you had the crown prince of saudi arabia coming on fox news saying we were close to a deal you had the prime minister of israel, neither of them uncontroversial but both a grant we were close to a peace deal. i think you had a panic in tehran. the decision to pull the trigger in this attack they had been planning for some months. trey: when it comes to diplomacy i am naïve. maybe some of our viewers are not well-versed in either. but saudi arabia certainly seem to give it u unsympathetic towad the israeli victims set the because they thought they had to? what do you make of that? that statement leans more toward hamas that it did israel. >> all the statements at a few ae out of qatar, out of saudi arabia were disproportionately leaning toward the palestinians. that is in some way history. it's also the pressures they are dealing with internally. at the same time you cannot discount the progress that has been made the facts we got to the abraham accordance we got to the point to the saudi's are talking openly about ap still with israel. this is when the iranian in andtheir terrorist proxies who e israel felt they had to play their mastercard to try to disrupt this. and so i am disappointed in all three of the statements. nothing about them makes me happy. but at the same time the bad guys here are the iranians, hamas and hezbollah. we should keep her eyes on that pig quickly raised at fsa and.n is the existential threats to our closest ally and to us by the way. in the region. so people back home are wondering why is the u.s. seeming to work with and talk with ironic?
