southern part of the country. they shot at border communities and also a music festival where there were more than a thousand people right now a group said they've taken israeli communities and holding the territory and they're amid rocket fire coming from the gaza strip and more than 2,000 rockets this morning is striking hamas positions inside gaza and it's an active ongoing bat and will the distance we've heard bursts of gunfire. tops setting up a check point and talk shows and they're concern that had border police believe 60 palestinians in southern israel to carry out attacks. and can you give us context on that and is that the source of most casualties and i don't know if you've had a chance to see most of the rocket attack or ground war producing the socialities in israel? reporter: it's the ground war and large civilian gatherings and palestinian militants and took over homes and seeing videos from inside the gaza strip on telegram and other messaging apps that show palestinians taking israelis into gaza at this moment and trying to take as many hostages and the numbers from hamas will likely rise and the casualties came from this gunfire but there were a number of rocket impacts in heavily populated areas and one of the cities in the south here took a direct impact as we drove here to this evacuation point and the horizon was filled with plumes of dark smoke, factories hit by rockets. it's clear that hamas and islamic jihad coordinated this to overwhelm the defense system and that's what they did. in the past the iron dome with the defense system able to intercept anywhere from 90-93% of the rocket fire from gaza and this morning we don't know the exact number but a number of those rockets did slip through and slam into the areas of central and southern israel and they're not just firing on communities here near the gaza border and air raid sirens serving as an aarm to civilians in tel aviv and jerusalem this morning. pete: i've seen images of entire isisraeli families slighted in their home and following up on will's question, that border is very fortified and i've been there where you can see just an eye shot to the border. i mean, there's israeli military manning it on the regular patrols and were they caught off guard? trey, was it the volume of incoming artillery that distracted from that or too many islamists coming across the border. what is israel saying about that right now? reporter: this is an intelligence failure by the israelis and they can come into communities and take over territory. you noted, this border is very secure and sensors going deep below the ground and large concrete walls with bashed wire at the top. what appears to have happened as these militants put explosive charges on the border wall and the fence blew a hole in the wall and then entered in that way. this community that sits close to the gaza border, and it's a place that if people go to the south, many have visited, we saw video of palestinian militants in the streets today and just now we're receiving reports of israeli troops to interest rate city and rescue civilians taking hostage by hamas. this is hard to put into words when you think about the level of security that patrols this area. the drones that are in the sky day and night over gaza and the intense that the israelis have obtained over the years and it's part of the reason that this is just beginning. israel, while they may have failed on the intelligence here, they certainly know where the hamas and islamic jihad infrastructure is inside gaza and there's air strike ntsb distance right now, fighter jets and attack helicopters in the skies, this is just the beginning. the israeli response is expected to be strong and it is expected to use ground units. we will likely see israeli tanks rolling on the road behind me i. this operation what benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister of israel has just begun. carly: trey, the prime minister calling on palestinians everywhere to join the fight. he's talk about civilian on civilian war. is that a possibility? have you seen that? reporter: it's a huge concern and there's reports that palestinians are clashing with israeli troops and concern that hamas and islam could get involved in the fighting. officials will not be surprised if they launch their own attacks because we've seen similar shooting attacks on a very, very small scale compared to today take place throughout the year. the other x factor is lebanon. when the round of rocket fire took place in fighting in may of this year, palestinian factions inside lebanon fired rockets and drone infiltrations in the past from syria and the groups that are all funded and supported by the iranen regime and israel bracing for a possibility of multi-day, multi-week, and multi-front conflict pete: yeah, now the north is involved as well. trey yingst, thank you far that update and we'll check if with you all morning long. been added. well above the 170,000 jobs that were forecasted putting unemployment at 3.8%. president biden is declaring a victory for bidenomics. of course it is a double edged sword with this type of news because usually all though it's good news when there's lower unemployment or jobs added, in the current economic environment with basically run away inflation, it means it's harder to get rid of inflation. those things are sort of inversely related and that was a little bit of a -- when we saw jobs reports, we thought there was always a chance it could bring down inflation, which is of course the driving problem underneath our economy. i got to tell you, when i'm out there talking to friends who are in real estate or financing, there's a great amount of fear about this economy in what could happen over the next 12 months. pete: numbers like that mean interest rate goes up. will: inflation goes high and interest rate goes high. pete: it makes everything else that much more expensive i think resounding the answer is no. clearly those communities. pete: if you take you up on the offer, you'd be interested in reimagining. will: look at what's happening in america right now, we can focus on new york, but whether it be stabbings or attacks or violent attacks on streets and how do you reimagine policing to stop this rising tide of violence?
