emergency center in florida. and we expect the governor to speak there, to give an update at any moment on the preparations. right now the storm is thrashing cuba with heavy rains and, again, governor desantis will provide an update soon ian oliver is standing by live to talk about the track and possibly how strong this thing could be. ian, good evening. >> bret, good evening. yeah. we just got that update from the national hurricane center the 5:00 p.m. update. it was unchanged in terms of its intensity what we see with tropical storm idalia is the overall structure of this is improving. close that that low level center this big burst of convection, these tall showers and thunderstorms. so you can think about it, the engine, you need all the parts in place. that's the structure of a three-point line system. now that that's in place this can start revving up. hurricane hunters are in route. don't be surprised if you hear about hurricane idalia. that's the latest from the national hurricane center that sun changed but the structure has and it's improved significantly. we did see with the forecast of this it's explicit forecast towards rapid intensification. by wednesday morning, we're talking about a major hurricane here with maximum sustained winds up to about 120 miles per hour. now, the issue here is this overall winfield will be growing larger. the right side of this forecast favor a larger surge across the tampa-saint pete metropolitan area. a path more off to the left would bring the worst of that surge up into the big bend other issue increasing forward speed of this, you look at the florida, georgia line that's stale category 1 hurricane at that point. so we're talking about hurricane conditions spreading well inland and that's going to lead to widespread posh outages. >> bret: just to to lay it out that swatter super warm and it will super charge that term. the question is whether it wobbles one way or the other. the back side of that storm to the right, if you will, the east side will be what's hit the hardest. and right now where is that looking? >> so that's a great point, bret. because, unlike what we saw with ian last year which folks always want to draw those comparisons or go farther back to 2 2017 wih irma. those both cut in. for folks with tampa you missed out on the surge, don't compare this storm to those. if you are in an evacuation zone a flood zone, please go. because this is a virtual lock at this point. that that center will be north of tampa bay. to your point you will be on the advancing side of this onshore component of the winds push those waters into the bay, a surge up to 7 feet possible. >> bret: thank you very much. interrupted florida governor ron desantis on the landfall. >> 70 miles per hour. it will become a hurricane very shortly. the storm is then forecast to make landfall on florida's big bend wednesday morning as a major hurricane. and the 5:00 advisory the national hurricane center nudged the track a little bit to the west. there were a lot of computer models pushing it a little bit to the west. so whereas they had had it impacting landfall in levy county, now they moved it a little bit over taylor, dixie county. look, these things can change but that is a slight deviation from what had been earlier today. there is a hurricane warning for the florida gulf coast from sarasota all the way to franklin county. the 5:00 p.m. advisory includes that if the storm hits at high tide storm surge could reach 8 to 12 feet in some areas, particularly in that big bend region. this is life-threatening storm surge. if you are in coastal low lying areas from tampa up through big bend, you need to be ready to evacuate to an inland area. evacuation orders for 78 of these areas have already been issued. more may be coming throughout the balance of tonight. clearly you have time today and for probably the better part of tomorrow but you are going to start seeing some impact with winds and some nasty weather tuesday night. and, of course, we are expecting a landfall to happen some time on wednesday. now, to make these evacuations easier on families, i'm directing florida department of transportation to waive tolls in citrus, hernando, hills bore row, pasco lake and sumter counties beginning at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. current evacuation orders for coastal and low lying areas have been issued in the frolg counties, baker, citrus, hernando, leave they, marianne, sarasota, taylor, union, h volua have a. if you are under a evacuation directive please heed the advice of your local officials. you don't need to leave the state. you don't need to drive hundreds of miles. you don't have to try to outrun the storm. if you are in those low lying areas the reason why they are advising you to evacuate because you are going to be susceptible to storm surge. if you get to a place that's higher ground and a safe structure, can you ride out the storm there and then go back to your home once the storm passes and all is clear. shelters, all these places that do this are opening shelters. i think most of the shelters will probably be open some time tomorrow morning. that's a place you can go. you can be safe there. go to friend's house, family's house. you can go to hotels. and do that. but you do not need to get on the road and try to drive hundreds of miles to get out of any impacts of the storm. that will not -- that's not viadvisable. visit california module with expedia real time availability of hotel rooms throughout the state. if you go to expedia.com/florida, you can see what is available. i was able to visit today both pinellas and levy counties to meek with local officials and to provide update on our preparation efforts. we are coordinating, as i mentioned, with utility companies. there are already more than 20,000 linemen that are ready to respond and more on the way throughout the balance of today and tomorrow. this will be an important effort to get power back on very quickly. we have spoken with local municipalities and advised them to be able -- to be willing to accept the mutual aid from other utility companies and their linemen so is that all of our residents can get power back on as soon as possible. we have been working with the counties to make sure they know that we stand ready to assist with requests. we have received 300 requests for resources with most of those coming in since noon today. and the florida division of emergency management is in the process of fulfilling those requests. and that will go all through the night and into tomorrow morning. we currently have over 400,000 gallons of fuel staged and ready to deploy. additional assets are expected over the next few days. we are prioritizing gas stations along heavy evacuation routes. we now have 8 urban search and rescue teams activated to be able to respond once the storm has passed and help people that may be in distress. of course, water, mres, all those things staged ready to go. now, when you do your hurricane plan, the first few days really should be things that you have water, non-perishable foods, this stuff will be brought in. but, initially, that should be something that you are preparing for. so, please do that. there are currently 12 shelters throughout the state opening tonight and at least 11 more are expected to open tomorrow. and any county that issues evacuation notices, you know, will follow that up by opening up one of their shelters and sometimes multiple shelters. we have activated the full 5500 national guardsmen available in our state to respond to the storm. they have access to a lot of different assets both on the ground and in the air. we have already deployed 247 of the star link.
