away from a pentagon briefing, first chance to hear from defense officials after the man that led a mutiny against vladimir putin is dead. the press asked biden about this after he took a pilates class but offered little insight into what some are calling a blatant assassination. >> i don't know, i've been working out the last hour and a half. >> john: hour two right now, john roberts in washington. i would like to finish the show but i've got a workout schedule. >> sandra: oh, gosh. happy friday eve, john. sandra smith in new york. president biden says he watched some of last night's republican debate while on vacation with his family in lake tahoe. >> john: word that beijing is ramping up aggression in the critical south china sea. republican congressman mike gallagher is the chairman of the house committee on china. he will join us in moments on what we heard on foreign policy at last night's debate. >> sandra: jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with the latest there. >> dangerous confrontations in the south china sea as chinese coast guard ships attempted to block two philippine supply ships on a resupply mission delivering food and other products to filipino military forces guarding the contested second thomas shoal, island claimed by china and the philippines. two philippine vessels, they were blocked five hours tuesday as a u.s. navy surveillance plane was overhead. they attempted to communicate with the chinese ships, the coast guard did. >> response to the legal activities of the philippines, the chinese coast guard have taken necessary law enforcement necessary measures in accordance with the law and urge the philippines to stop taking any measures that would further complicate the situation. >> china has sent dozens of military aircraft and navy vessels around taiwan with one harbin z9 helicopter crossing into the air identification zone. in response, taiwan launched its own fighter jets from bases across the island to deter beijing. taiwan's president was on kinman island, a small island off china's coast to mark the anniversary of 1958 military clash with china. >> we are firmly committed to maintaining peace and stability across the taiwan strait. however, to maintain peace we must first strengthen ourself. >> the u.s. commerce secretary travels to china this weekend to meet with senior chinese officials and business leaders. she met with the chinese ambassador on tuesday, the u.s. and south korean militaries began 11 days of large scale joint military exercises on monday. ten allied members of the member states, australia, canada, france, philippines will be looking at the exercises, and they were halted unt the trump administration and now seen as a deterrent to north korea and china. sandra. >> john: bring in republican wisconsin congressman mike gallagher, congressman, good to talk to you. you have written in advance of last night's debate an op-ed in the wall street journal you urged the candidates to talk about in china, it's an important issue. the wall street journal wrote this, china largely gets a pass from republican candidates. china largely got a pass in the debate that candidates mainly used the country as a way to talk about other issues, the glancing mentions seemed odd for a country that some republican members of congress identify as a threat to the united states. did you hear enough about china to your satisfaction last night? >> no, i did not. listen, it was a great debate in many ways, a lot of important issues beyond china. my view is that china is our foremost geopolitical threat. it is an existential threat, a global threat, anyone who seeks to be commander in chief needs to be pressed on china. the next commander in chief will likely be dealing with this ongoing gray zone warfare in the south china sea, we have seen for the last decade and little to contest it, or the fourth taiwan strait crisis, a massive test of presidential leadership. we saw some foreign policy issues. i would argue the debate over the southern border is important, it's a national security issue, might be the second most important national security issue. governor desantis was great on the southern border issue, aggressive, put forward a vision, that was a good debate. by and large we did not see enough on china. hopefully in future debates we'll get into the weeds on china because it is the most important foreign policy issue the next commander in chief will be dealing with. >> john: vivek ramaswamy's policy, watch this exchange with nikki haley. >> the problem that vivek doesn't understand is he wants to hand ukraine to russia, he wants to let china eat taiwan, he wants to go and stop funding israel. you don't do that to friends. what you do instead is you have the backs of your friends. ukraine is a front line of defense. >> john: she finished on ukraine, but saet vivek ramaswamy wants to let china eat taiwan, i have not spoken to him directly but do you interpret until we don't need them anymore we are going to back them, when we don't need them anymore, china can do what it wants? >> well, i think our interest in taiwan extend beyond semiconductors and they pre-date the emergence of the semiconductor superpower. if china took taiwan, we would not be able to fulfill treaty obligations in the region, we have a treaty with philippines, we did nothing in 2012 when china contested and took over the scarborough shoal, their goal to militarize all the south china sea in order to control this critical maritime commerce highway and hold the rest of the world economically hostage. if they had taiwan, even if we had semiconductor independence, difficult under the current approach, and continued to militarize the south china sea the problem would remain in terms of their coercive economic power. i'm sure vivek will be asked future questions on this. this is the most likely flash point with china in the next few years. their ambitions are to take taiwan. what i would like to see is candidates to understand the nature of the regime we are dealing with. this is a regime that has contempt for weakness, they back down only when confronted with strength, so if we want to prevent a war with china, we need a stronger commander in chief and more lethal military. biden is in fact older than the people's republic of china, established in 1949, and seems to wish cast a more cooperative ccp that does not exist, even if it ever did. reviving engagement with china. opportunity for candidates like nikki haley, had a good night, a lot of foreign policy experience to articulate that, we need to get in to that part of the debate and we did not do it last night. >> john: had not thought about it in terms of biden being older than the chinese communist party. think about that from now on. congressman mike gallagher, a hometown debate for you last night, glad you had a time to spend time there. appreciate it. >> thank you very much, appreciate it. >> sandra: fox news alert, this just in. new york governor kathy hochul is formally asking the biden administration for help with the migrant crisis plaguing this city and state. >> this crisis originated with the federal government and it must be resolved through the federal government. moments ago i issued a letter to the biden administration formally requesting that it take executive action to address new york's migrant crisis. >> sandra: new yorkers have protested the city's handling of the issue as it struggled to accommodate estimated 100,000 migrants who have arrived since last year. john, it's something you see every single day, you know, you see what's happening on randall's island, front page of the "new york post," now taking away soccer fields that children use in the city to put up tents and house these migrants. it is an emergency situation and the governor who has welcomed this with open arms, sanctuary city this is, mayor adams, now they are having to deal with it. >> john: yeah, and you know, as joe germinata, lady gaga's father, a street down the street from him has been turned into a migrant shelter, and says it's affecting the upper west side. so many people across the country are feeling the sting of this which really reinforces the belief that a lot of people have that every state now is a border state because of the immigration crisis. >> sandra: indeed. >> john: newly released bodycam footage showing the arrest of the woman accused of masterminding the murder of her tech executive ex-husband. we have that video and the latest in the murder of jared bridegan. >> sandra: americans looking to buy a home may be sacrificing to close the deal, like no dining rooms. and the number of people never buying a home is on the rise. larry kudlow is walking into the studio right now. >> the great overstimulus, left us with inflation and real wages down 6% since the start of the biden administration, so what margin do you have left to make it cheaper? lost jobs, ok. you can criticize that 'til the cows come home and look back and say we shouldn't have done this, shouldn't have done that, i might agree with you on some points but the reality is what was done was done, and that's what rare moments, and most of that spending ran off, ok. the trouble is, joe biden has continued the spending. >> sandra: he did not stop it, the emergency was over and alleged triggerman was taken into custody in january and it was known at that time he was going to flip on his alleged co-conspirators, it finally happened in washington after a grand jury from florida indicted fernandez on four counts, including first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. state attorneys in florida says she played a central and key role in the cold calculated and premeditated murder of her ex-husband, jared bridegan. they divorced in 2015, both remarried, but they were locked in a long and bitter fight over custody of their two children, bridegan's widow, who president's team. democrats expected the candidates to equate former president trump's legal problems with those facing the first son. also amid the federal probe and congressional investigations into hunter biden and the first family, the campaign was asked how they would navigate that dragging on the campaign and they punted. >> mccarthy wakes up every day praying he has 218 votes to be speaker tahoe, he arrived separately by commercial flight, a bit unusual. until early last month when his legal battles ramped up, he would often fly air force one or marine one with his dad. this was the norm when biden was vice president, records and emails showing hunter tagged along to at least 13 countries, and setting up business calls or meetings on the trips, unclear if they ever panned out. house republicans are investigating to what extent the president may have been involved in his son's business dealings. and inquiry could come after congress returns from recess, and they are looking into whistleblower allegations that david weiss was not allowed to prosecute how he wanted before he got special counsel status. >> starting to connect the dots but following the facts, it's going to under president obama and the obama biden 2012 campaign manager and ceo of the messina group. it's been a while since you and i have talked. so, biden taking a lot of incoming on the economy. he claims that bidenomics is working. but it doesn't seem to be translating to voters, according to a fox news poll taken ten days ago, 52% of people say biden has made the economy worse and when people were asked about their financial situation the number of people saying that it's only fair or poor about where it was three months ago, 65% saying that, so the idea that biden says bidenomics is working, jim, i don't know if he just is of a mind if he says it enough it will eventually become true? what do you think? >> well, look, i think he's got a very strong track record to talk about on the economic issues and we are sitting 400 some days out before the election and in the end as you know and reported, elections are about choices and the choice will be between he and probably donald trump. and in that economic choice, it's pretty clear the biden team feels very good about it. last night during the debate all those candidates for an hour and a half did not say the word manufacturing or the economy one time and focused on issues like abortion and so that's what the democrats want them to do, and that seems to be what we are going to have as we go into an election year. >> john: as i recall, though, before the down turn in 2020 from covid, the economy was doing pretty well in the last administration. i want to ask you about your administration's of the field last night and who you think the biden campaign is paying particular attention to. >> donald trump. look, i think last night did not give us what the republicans wanted, which was a clear alternative to donald trump. no one on that stage last night that you and i could think really stood out and started to consolidate the anti-trump votes and what's clear after last night is this is donald trump's race to lose, he has the largest lead since the 2000 election in george bush, won the primary and i saw nothing to say there is going to be anyone other than donald trump. >> john: all right, but that aside, the biden campaign still plans in the coming days to drop $25 million to television and digital ads in battleground states, including florida, where they are going to target latino voters in particular, and the president does seem to be having some trouble with latino voters, at least according to the "new york times" siena poll, asked if the 2024 election were held today, hispanic voters said 41% vote for joe biden, 38% for donald trump. that's just a 3% difference and then when asked about the approval, disapproval of hispanic voters said they approve of joe biden 41% but disapprove of him by 50%. it looks like he's got a bit of a hill to climb with hispanic voters that he didn't have in 2020. >> well, clearly the biden campaign is focused on this, as you just said. they have a $25 billion buy, crucial to their 2020 election win. i think they are smart to start early and not wait 'til the end, i've been critical of democrats in the past for doing and a target battleground that you are going to be reporting on for the next 15 months, and i think it's smart of team biden to get out there early and start messaging to the key demographic. >> john: bad news for joe biden in a head to head match-up. if you think donald trump is going to be the eventual nominee and they go head to head, if the election were held today, 43% say they would vote for biden, 43% for trump. any way you cut it, jim. if trump is the nominee, it's going to be a close race. >> oh, i don't think it matters who the nominees of both parties are. we have a country thinly divided. the last two presidential elections were razor tight elections. i would note the one i ran in 2012 wasn't but we'll put that aside for a second. and you know, we are probably going to face a third very close election and i think democrats understand that, republicans understand it, it's why you see people out there messaging, it's why the biden campaign has a $25 million buy this early in the election while the republicans are hammering at each other. >> john: one quick question before we go, and quick answer on this. the other day the dnc held a press conference ahead of the debate and would not commit to biden being in a presidential debate, not just a primary debate, but a presidential debate. there's been presidential debates every election cycle since 1976. why would he sit this out? >> i don't think he would sit out of a presidential debate. the country watches those, and trump has not yet committed to being in a primary or a general election debate, but i think it's what the country wants and i would expect there to be general election debates with joe biden and probably donald trump. >> john: all right. we'll see if that holds true. thanks for joining us this afternoon, away from a pentagon briefing, first chance to hear from defense officials after the man that led a mutiny against vladimir putin is dead. the press asked biden about this after he took a pilates class but offered little insight into what some are calling a blatant assassination. >> i don't know, i've been working out the last hour and a half. >> john: hour two right now, john roberts in washington. i would like to finish the show but i've got a workout schedule. >> sandra: oh, gosh. happy friday eve, john. sandra smith in new york. president biden says he watched some of last night's republican debate while on vacation with his family in lake tahoe. >> john: word that beijing is ramping up aggression in the critical south china sea. republican congressman mike gallagher is the chairman of the house committee on china. he will join us in moments on what we heard on foreign policy at last night's debate. >> sandra: jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with the latest there. >> dangerous confrontations in the south china sea as chinese coast guard ships attempted to block two philippine supply ships on a resupply mission delivering food and other products to filipino military forces guarding the contested second thomas shoal, island claimed by china and the philippines. two philippine vessels, they were blocked five hours tuesday as a u.s. navy surveillance plane was overhead. they attempted to communicate with the chinese ships, the coast guard did. >> response to the legal activities of the philippines, the chinese coast guard have taken necessary law enforcement necessary measures in accordance with the law and urge the philippines to stop taking any measures that would further complicate the situation. >> china has sent dozens of military aircraft and navy vessels around taiwan with one harbin z9 helicopter crossing into the air identification zone. in response, taiwan launched its own fighter jets from bases across the island to deter beijing. taiwan's president was on kinman island, a small island off china's coast to mark the anniversary of 1958 military clash with china. >> we are firmly committed to maintaining peace and stability across the taiwan strait. however, to maintain peace we must first strengthen ourself. >> the u.s. commerce secretary travels to china this weekend to meet with senior chinese officials and business leaders. she met with the chinese ambassador on tuesday, the u.s. and south korean militaries began 11 days of large scale joint military exercises on monday. ten allied members of the member states, australia, canada, france, philippines will be looking at the exercises, and they were halted unt the trump administration and now seen as a deterrent to north korea and china. sandra. >> john: bring in republican wisconsin congressman mike gallagher, congressman, good to talk to you. you have written in advance of last night's debate an op-ed in the wall street journal you urged the candidates to talk about in china, it's an important issue. the wall street journal wrote this, china largely gets a pass from republican candidates. china largely got a pass in the debate that candidates mainly used the country as a way to talk about other issues, the glancing mentions seemed odd for a country that some republican members of congress identify as a threat to the united states. did you hear enough about china to your satisfaction last night? >> no, i did not. listen, it was a great debate in many ways, a lot of important issues beyond china. my view is that china is our foremost geopolitical threat. it is an existential threat, a global threat, anyone who seeks to be commander in chief needs to be pressed on china. the next commander in chief will likely be dealing with this ongoing gray zone warfare in the south china sea, we have seen for the last decade and little to contest it, or the fourth taiwan strait crisis, a massive test of presidential leadership. we saw some foreign policy issues. i would argue the debate over the southern border is important, it's a national security issue, might be the second most important national security issue. governor desantis was great on the southern border issue, aggressive, put forward a vision, that was a good debate. by and large we did not see enough on china. hopefully in future debates we'll get into the weeds on china because it is the most important foreign policy issue the next commander in chief will be dealing with. >> john: vivek ramaswamy's policy, watch this exchange with nikki haley. >> the problem that vivek doesn't understand is he wants to hand ukraine to russia, he wants to let china eat taiwan, he wants to go and stop funding israel. you don't do that to friends. what you do instead is you have the backs of your friends. ukraine is a front line of defense. >> john: she finished on ukraine, but saet vivek ramaswamy wants to let china eat taiwan, i have not spoken to him directly but do you interpret until we don't need them anymore we are going to back them, when we don't need them anymore, china can do what it wants? >> well, i think our interest in taiwan extend beyond semiconductors and they pre-date the emergence of the semiconductor superpower. if china took taiwan, we would not be able to fulfill treaty obligations in the region, we have a treaty with philippines, we did nothing in 2012 when china contested and took over the scarborough shoal, their goal to militarize all the south china sea in order to control this critical maritime commerce highway and hold the rest of the world economically hostage. if they had taiwan, even if we had semiconductor independence, difficult under the current approach, and continued to militarize the south china sea the problem would remain in terms of their coercive economic power. i'm sure vivek will be asked future questions on this. this is the most likely flash point with china in the next few years. their ambitions are to take taiwan. what i would like to see is candidates to understand the nature of the regime we are dealing with. this is a regime that has contempt for weakness, they back down only when confronted with strength, so if we want to prevent a war with china, we need a stronger commander in chief and more lethal military. biden is in fact older than the people's republic of china, established in 1949, and seems to wish cast a more cooperative ccp that does not exist, even if it ever did. reviving engagement with china. opportunity for candidates like nikki haley, had a good night, a lot of foreign policy experience to articulate that, we need to get in to that part of the debate and we did not do it last night. >> john: had not thought about it in terms of biden being older than the chinese communist party. think about that from now on. congressman mike gallagher, a hometown debate for you last night, glad you had a time to spend time there. appreciate it. >> thank you very much, appreciate it. >> sandra: fox news alert, this just in. new york governor kathy hochul is formally asking the biden administration for help with the migrant crisis plaguing this city and state. >> this crisis originated with the federal government and it must be resolved through the federal government. moments ago i issued a letter to the biden administration formally requesting that it take executive action to address new york's migrant crisis. >> sandra: new yorkers have protested the city's handling of the issue as it struggled to accommodate estimated 100,000 migrants who have arrived since last year. john, it's something you see every single day, you know, you see what's happening on randall's island, front page of the "new york post," now taking away soccer fields that children use in the city to put up tents and house these migrants. it is an emergency situation and the governor who has welcomed this with open arms, sanctuary city this is, mayor adams, now they are having to deal with it. >> john: yeah, and you know, as joe germinata, lady gaga's father, a street down the street from him has been turned into a migrant shelter, and says it's affecting the upper west side. so many people across the country are feeling the sting of this which really reinforces the belief that a lot of people have that every state now is a border state because of the immigration crisis. >> sandra: indeed. >> john: newly released bodycam footage showing the arrest of the woman accused of masterminding the murder of her tech executive ex-husband. we have that video and the latest in the murder of jared bridegan. >> sandra: americans looking to buy a home may be sacrificing to close the deal, like no dining rooms. and the number of people never buying a home is on the rise. larry kudlow is walking into the studio right now. >> the great overstimulus, left us with inflation and real wages down 6% since the start of the biden administration, so what margin do you have left to make it cheaper? norm when biden was vice president, records and emails showing hunter tagged along to at least 13 countries, and setting up business calls or meetings on the trips, unclear if they ever panned out. were asked about their financial situation the number of people saying that it's only fair or poor about where it was three months ago, 65% saying that, so the idea that biden says bidenomics is the economic issues and we are sitting 400 some days out before the election and in the end as you know and reported, elections are about choices and the choice will be between he and probably donald trump. and in that economic choice, it's pretty clear the biden team feels very good about it. last night during the debate all those candidates for an hour and a half did not say the word said 41% vote for joe biden, 38% for donald trump. that's just a 3% difference and then when asked about the approval, disapproval of hispanic voters said they approve of joe biden 41% but disapprove of him by 50%. it looks like he's got a bit of a hill to climb with hispanic voters that he didn't have in 2020. >> well, clearly the biden campaign is focused on this, as you just said. they have a $25 billion buy, crucial to their 2020 election win. i think they are smart to start early and not wait 'til the end, i've been critical of democrats in the past for doing and a target battleground way you cut it, jim. if trump is the nominee, it's going to be a close race. >> oh, i don't think it matters who the nominees of both parties are. we have a country thinly divided. the last two presidential elections were razor tight elections. i would note the one i ran in 2012 wasn't but we'll put that aside for a second. and you know, we are probably going to face a third very close election and i think democrats understand that, republicans understand it, it's why you see people out there messaging, it's why the biden campaign has a $25 million buy this early in the election while the republicans are hammering at each other. >> john: one quick question before we go, and quick answer on this. the other day the dnc held a press conference ahead of the debate and would not
