>> bret: i'll start. i think obviously the moment is a big political moment. a little surreal in the political moment we're in but so many issues that face americans that they want to hear about. the former president is not here on the stage but the people who are here on the stage are really going to be trying to stand out above the others to be the alternative. >> martha: the numbers we've seen over this week's polling show 50 to 60% of republican voters watching closely tonight, of course, are undecided. they are persuadeable and listening to all these people. we hear it time and again with all the voter panels. people saying their minds are very open at this point. that's a big opportunity for these folks tonight. i think that they are also a bit anxious and excited getting on stage. for some we'll wake up tomorrow morning feeling they hit it out of the park. others not so much. the stakes are pretty high. >> bill: i was looking at the setup yesterday. it is beautiful, number one. i think there is like two feet in between each podium. not a lot of physical space. >> bret: right over here is where governor burgum will be. there is eight people here but there is not a lot of space in between candidates and if you are governor burgum, you can still, because of the semi circle, really get engaged in this moment. it is pretty tight and i think there will be a lot of contrast and a lot of interaction. in the middle is governor desantis and vivek ramaswamy. >> dana: quite cozy. >> martha: i don't think anybody will be bumped off the end. >> bill: your prep now. you've been doing it for days. how much do you want to address specific issues with individual candidates and how much do you want them to engage with each other >> martha: i think it's both. moderators is a different situation than a one-on-one interview. our job is to set them up well and ask them questions that will be challenging for them and then to get them going at each other called the debate for a reason. we want to foster and encourage a lively debate up there tonight and why people are tuning in and want to see these folks on stage really have to be on their toes and explain how they would govern. >> bret: ideally you get them questions from getting to the off ramp of talking points. you want to get authentic answers and exchanges between candidates to help voters decide who is best for them. >> martha: people have such a good monitor for when that authentic moment is happening. people know if you've rolled into our talking points or answering a question from the heart. >> dana: bret, i believe the way you described it yesterday is the categories for the questions you consider them to be in buckets. can you give anybody a preview for the types of buckets that you have for tonight? >> bret: first we have a lot of buckets and we've been shifting buckets and changing buckets. and what i would say is anybody who looks at any poll about what americans care about, there is a bucket for that in some way, shape or form. now, all of this is like a battle plan and it gets thrown out the door when the war starts. we are used to adjusting on the fly and have a great team that gets in our ear and tells us going on time wise. we are trying to be equitable, too. >> martha: there are obvious burning questions on people's minds, the state of the economy. you can expect to hear a lot tonight. a unique opportunity for these candidates because the former president won't be center stage. that would have taken up a lot of oxygen in the room and they know they have a really unique opportunity to shine. so we'll see who shines and who doesn't. >> bill: martha, you touched on it call for one before we say goodbye for now. that des moines register poll showed a lot about what the candidates need to focus on. they found 52% of the people in iowa could be persuaded. that's a big, big number. guys, thanks for being here. you have a short day. maybe we'll do the drone 2.0 a little later. >> bret: that was really cool. >> bill: some other fun stuff. >> martha: thank you so much. looking forward to it. >> bill: talk to you soon. fox news alert. breaking news on one of the people on stage tonight. doug burgum has been taken to the emergency room in milwaukee, wisconsin, after an injury he sustained while playing basketball. we're not sure exactly what the injury is. we don't know how that affects his appearance tonight. we're waiting to get more information on this. a lot of the candidates get up early, go for a work-out. a lot try to keep up a normal day's routine to keep their mind relaxed. for doug burgum it was shooting hoops. this time it did not work out entirely as he had hoped. >> dana: let's hope it is a minor injury for him and an update this morning during "america's newsroom" and bring it to you. >> bill: really interesting guy. we've had him on a couple times. he made a lot of money in the private sector and then went into public life and has done what many in north dakota consider to be a great job. >> dana: a farmer too boot. he has a lot to talk about and hope he is able to make it on stage tonight. >> bill: 14 past the hour from milwaukee. let's move to this now. check it out. >> president biden: the financial times and the "wall street journal" called my plan bidenomics. i'm not sure they meant it in a totally complimentary way at the time but guess what? (dog bark) it's simply fresh meat and vegetables, with all the nutrients dogs need— instead of dried pellets. just food made for the health of dogs. delivered in packs portioned for your dog. it's amazing what real food can do. with the price of just about everything going up during inflation, we thought we'd bring our prices down. so to help us, we brought in a reverse auctioneer. which is apparently a thing. mint mobile, unlimited premium wireless. can i get 30, 30 bidder get 30 bidder get 20, 20, 20, bidder get 20, 20, bidder get 15, 15, 15, 15. just 15 bucks a month. sold! mint mobile premium wireless. let's check his tongue for steroids. mint mobile premium wireless. 15, 15, bidder bid 15, bidder bid 15 15 15 and... sold! what brand of coffee do you drink? hi, i'm norma, and i lost 53 pounds on golo. when i started golo, i expected to plateau like i had so many other times. i was surprised that sticking to the golo plan and taking release, the weight just kept coming off. (soft music) i suffer with psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. i was on a journey for a really long time to find some relief. cosentyx works for me. cosentyx helps real people get real relief from the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis or psoriasis. serious allergic reactions and an increased risk of infections or lowered ability to fight them may occur. tell your doctor if you have an infection or symptoms, had a vaccine or plan to or if ibd symptoms develop or worsen. i move so much better because of cosentyx. ask your rheumatologist about cosentyx. >> can you talk about the death toll in maui? >> can you tell us about your hawaii trip, sir? >> president biden: no, not now. >> bill: maui residents calling president biden's visit to their island tone deaf. his attempt to relate to victims has backlash. can he afford the gaffes as republicans step up to the mic tonight? let's talk to minnesota senator tina smith. is there a hangover of that maui visit over the debate hall tonight? >> glad to be with you. welcome to the midwest, by the way. i understand some of my colleagues in hawaii that president biden was very warmly received there and i think also that the president has a unique capacity to connect with people and express empathy for what they've been going through. what happened in hawaii is he was sharing stories of his loss of his first wife and daughter in a terrible car accident and what i thought was remarkable is how he stuck around for 45 minutes after the big events were over to talk to people. the most important thing in this terrible catastrophe of this fire in hawaii is he is doing absolutely everything we can to get resources to people living in maui and in hawaii to recover and that is what i hear is the thing that people are most appreciative of right now. >> dana: a couple of headlines. call for three showing usa today saying biden visited maui and met with grief over relief efforts and biden met with anger from some maui residents that a lot of people could understand and let's call for number two here, senator smith. this is democrats defending as you yourself are, president biden. >> i think his empathy, his stories, his way he connects with voters are why he won the 2020 presidential election. >> he spent two hours with people community members, survivors, first responder. >> he served after emotion -- >> dana: the original silence as well as the story about the minor fire have led people to say is he understanding what's going on with hundreds of people missing? one more word and we'll move to another topic. >> he is understanding it and demonstrating that understanding not only by being there but by making sure the full force of the federal government is being brought to help these poor individuals who have suffered such loss in hawaii. you know, i have to say also, it is kind of incredible to see some politicians trying to take advantage of the grief and the misery in hawaii to try to score political points here. >> dana: well, that does happen in disasters. i remember it very, very well. let's move on to something else here. we had the gas prices and things that are also a huge problem especially here in the midwest and we just had a voter panel who said they don't feel the economy is going well for them. your thoughts about bidenomics as it stands today. >> so i think tonight is going to be a really important night. it will be a big challenge for these republican candidates bois have a huge audience, a big fox audience. what i think will happen is a lot of individuals in your audience will be hearing that these candidates are a lot more extreme than they really want. the reality of the economic recovery that we are living through is pretty dramatic. the fastest and best economic recovery of any place in the world. 13 million jobs created, 800,000 manufacturing jobs created a resurgence of manufacturing. 75% of americans say they feel good about their own financial well-being and then you have successes like capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month. something that every one of your panelists would voted again. the contrast tonight for voters when they hear about the extreme plans are of these republicans. >> bill: we found in our fox polling how things are going in th
