who? big night tonight 9:00 everybody going to be tuning in. >> brian: 8:00 local. >> steve: 1 hours from right now. 8 candidates determined to stand out from the crowd will stand on the stage there it forum building in milwaukee. >> ainsley: the debate stage has already been set. okay. ron desantis and vivek ramaswamy will take the center stage that's based on recent polling. >> brian: right. we're going to go two hours with some breaks so everyone will get a chance to talk. i was talking to martha and bret last night they wanted bigger busts of themselves on the arena. they are talking to publicity now. probably be even bigger by the time the debate gets started. >> people want to see your face on that pfizer forum too behind us. home of the milwaukee bucks. right now the stage is set to be the head of politics here. strong debate performance would make a difference to me. >> curious to get a better pulse who is out there and their positions on different topics. >> so take a look here, this is who is going to be up on that debate stage in milwaukee, wisconsin in just hours from now. ron desantis, vivek ramaswamy, mike pence, nikki haley, chris christie, tim scott, asa hutchison and doug burgum. chris christie who has been up on a presidential debate stage before has been slamming desantis for that leaked memo we talked about from his super pac talking about his campaign strategy. some of them are suggesting he would defend trump when others go after him but really beat down on ramaswamy who is rising in the polls. he posted this that you are looking at on social media saying a florida politician showing he can memorize lines from his consultants, what could possibly go wrong? desantis has told fox in the past he is ready to be the target, he is ready to get up on the debate stage and stand for what he believes in. telling brian is he going to be under attack because he is the top contender you are doing to see a very prepared and hardworking candidate on that stage. no one else in this debate working as hard as governor desantis. when he is pushed he never backs down from a fight. is he unapologetic in his ethic, in his work and in his success. >> he is going to have to show his personality on that debate stage which we have seen him work a lot of crowds on the ground. ramaswamy is leaning on the founding fathers, can you see this in the video of him being on the ground in milwaukee. campaign bus branded with the slogan this is our 1776 moment. ram zam has compared himself to thomas jefferson defends his age. if jefferson can do it at 33 he is ready to do it at 38. he will be the youngest. also hitting the gym with his wife. he has been working out every single day using fitness to prepare for that debate. ramaswamy pushing back on criticism he has been getting about his foreign policy chops. also we talked with nikki haley who said she is ready for the debate, telling fox news no one can outwork her she is scrappy ready to get on that stage. hit her with their best shot. hot topic school and gender policy. right? well mike pence spent his time here in wisconsin at an event with riley gaines who is a topic expert on that. really trying to connect with the crowds to gain some voter support as he gets ready to get up on the debate stage. the dnc booked a plane to fly around milwaukee pulling a banner reading. people getting ready to head in the debate are going to look up in the sky and see that. >> steve: it's a bird, it's a plane. >> that's right. >> brian: way to set the table. i got good news, guys. ainsley, you woke up pete this morning because the first hour didn't go well so he is going to help me out in the a block. is he now here no necktie wearing a shirt he is doing that thing tonight on fox nation. >> mascot's name is bango the buck. a name not just a deer and owls don't work for him either. bango the buck. >> brian: foreign policy. category tonight. and where vivek has created some waves. it's going to open himself up to defend his positions on israel. on taiwan, on january 6th and possibly 9/11 but he tried to clarify that yesterday. >> peter: there is a very real divide inside the republican party. donald trump blew it open in 2015-2016 after a decade and and a half of foreign policy that we're not heading in the right direction. evidence said maybe this adventurism in foreign intervention has not worked so well. people like me in with the ne-yo conservatives at the time were offended by his characterization of some of these foreign wars but is he not wrong when you look at nato. when you look at what donald trump was able to do eventually with peace in the middle east with what israel was able to do with its neighbors. you can be right in principle which i think vivek ramaswamy is right in principle that the prism through which we look at foreign policy today is not the same as 1908 as or 90s. also wrong in the specifics, pull back in support of israel in the way that we support them. it will be -- that will be an interesting line. i just don't know if nikki haley or mike pence make that a centerpiece ukraine not popular with the center base. win think tank not winning over the voters. i don't see the candidates spending a lot of time in this space but we will see. >> steve: also just about a month or so ago that mr. ramaswamy suggested that they raise the voting age from 18 to 25 unless you are in the military or a first responder. that is a curious viewpoint. i know a lot of 18, 19, 20-year-olds. i think his whole point was we would like to get more people into the military and whatnot. but not popular with people who are voting for the first time. anyway, as we -- tomorrow on this program, about this time, we will be highlighting some of the highlights, some of the low lights, and we have got a little montage of some of the zingsers and whatnot over the years that you have seen on fox and elsewhere. so here are some republican debates from the good old days. >> turn that microphone. i am paying for this microphone. >> this is an attack piece. >> that is not by my campaign. >> it says paid for by john mccain. >> it is not by my campaign. >> when somebody is putting stuff out. >> it's three agencies of government when i get there that are gone. commerce, education, and the -- what's the third one there, let's see. >> it was energy. rick perry brian. >> peter: or was it interior. >> steve: couple nights later on the long-term show he blamed el nino. >> brian: also had a bad back. >> ainsley: ronald reagan one. that was great. that was in 1980, i remember studying him i had to give a speech at the reagan library and studied that that is so great because he personally financed that debate. >> steve: i was actually covering the caucuses in iowa. >> ainsley: the moderator was going to clip his mike and said mr. microphone guy, clip his mic. he stood up. got so mad. sat back down and said i am paying to are this mic. the crowd went crazy. >> steve: who do you think is most apt to deliver a si zinger tonight. >> pete: you look at that clip unscripted. part-time paying baying for this microphone. mccain bush exchanges. it had already been in the news it was coming. a prepared back and forth for that. that's what is so uncertain about in 13 hours a debate like tonight. it's make or break for ron desantis. so does he go on the attack? he certainly gets attacked. the criticism of him has been personality, being fluid, being natural. >> brian: likeable. >> peter: can he be likeable. can he do that in the moment. vivek is a massive wild car really interesting guy who could jump in there but also jump in too much. if you are a little too eager in that moment. how does a known entity like nikki haley, tim scott, mike pence, how do you create a second caricature of who you are. how do you create that authentic moment? and then you have got donald trump looming behind the whole thing. you want to win over his supporters without offending them and calling them listless vessels. >> brian: you are referring to governor desantis. >> governor desantis saying why is there so much lingering support for him amongst members of congress and others are they listless vessels adding to the deplorable feel. vivek feels like 9 guy who could have that moment tonight unless desantis gets comfortable enough to punch back to some of his critics which i think he is capable of. >> ainsley: pete, i was listening to scott walker he said they have to do more than just paulk about their record. they can't just run on their record. they all have records except for vivek. people didn't know who he was until a couple months ago. >> steve: the rich guy. >> ainsley: remember when donald trump took the stage in the beginning and he said build the wall. he said drain the swamp. so what could one of these candidates say or several of these candidates say to stand out when it comes to the economy and immigration and when it comes to crime? >> well, that's where i think a vivek ramaswamy has been willing to say interesting things that are much different than the field it. takes a lot of guts to stand on that stage. especially the way trump did. remember when they said raise your hand if you will support the nominee if you won't and he is the only one. >> brian: i don't remember that at all. [laughter] >> pete: that is not an easy thing to do to stand alone and then stand confidently in that position when there might be boos or there might be pushback amongst the crowd. you have to feel like i know the voter out there feels the way that i do. almost that oliver anthony song feeling of "i don't care what all of you in the ruling class think. maybe in the higher echelons of the rnc. what do the people out there work for an honest think. are they with me on that? >> brian: when do you bring up trump? when you say i'm going to finish wall. trump re-purposed defense dollars to do it because congress didn't give it to him. how would you have done that and now president biden is selling it off for scrap metal in the middle of the desert. >> pete: more tricky question would you pardon the former president were he to be. >> brian: everybody wants that question. >> pete: everybody wants it. but how you answer it is going to matter a lot. >> brian: chris christie will say no. >> pete: vivek is going to say clearly yes. the most interesting answer would be ron desantis. tiptoed around that. >> brian: i always liked you on the channel. i liked you a little bit on fox business. i cannot wait to see you on fox nation. tell me what to expect. >> pete: 8:30 p.m. eastern time we will do a preshow on fox nation. freewheeling. what are we thinking? >> yeah, i had a lot more hair and it was darker, too. that was a younger version of me. let's not go there, steve. let's talk about the debate instead, okay? >> steve: sure, you know, one of the things -- people love to watch you on the debate stage because you always were authentic and you always seemed to come up with a zinger. >> you know, i think it's important for candidates to just be who they are. don't try to pretend to be something. if you are naturally funny, then be funny. if you are not, then a joke will fall flat and make you look like an idiot. so the most important thing for the candidate to do is to go from relaxed, to go in there with a sense of being loose and have a good time. because if you have a good time on that stage as a candidate, the audience will have a good time watching you. and that's an important part. i see too many candidates and it's like they are reading from some card that's been indelibly etched into the back of their head by their consultants and i just think that that's a death knell for a candidate on that debate stage. >> launch campaigns to much fanfare and haven't really gone anywhere. this is officially the starting gate for election 2024, isn't it? here with more is host of varney and company and american built on fox business, stuart varney, good morning, stuart. >> good morning. >> ainsley: what do we need to hear from the candidates? >> we have got to hear about inflation. inflation is the key issue. the economy getting worse because of inflation to ordinary people candidates have to do two things. one, make sure they understand inflation is a shock going to the grocery store and gas station it's a shock on an individual basis. don't quote high flown economic theory. don't give us a bunch of statistics, show us that inflation is real. you understand it. and it's a gut issue. come down to the gut level. secondly, they have got to tell us what they are going to do about inflation. none of them has yet been truly specific. i'll bring down inflation by doing. this desantis says he's going for growth. that he thinks will maybe take care of some inflation. ramaswamy is going for growth. we have nikki haley, she says that government spending started ingalatian. so cut some spending. tim scott cut spending and regulation but nothing specific about inflation. so, i think they should get explicit about what they are going to do about this key problem. >> ainsley: i agree. if they could go through and say this is what the government is pending your money on, and if it's something ridiculous, they can say i will give you an example. we'll cut that just like when president trump i want to fix the border. he came up with a solution i'm going to build the wall. remember? >> stuart: and it worked because he said what he would do. >> ainsley: absolutely. he gave a specific. condition of the economy and personal finances. let's look at this, stuart. overall economy 80% of the people said it's only fair or poor. only 20 percent said excellent or good. and then when it comes to your personal finance situation, 65 percent said it's poor or fair and only 35 percent said it's good. >> stuart: that's 65%. that's because of inflation. your personal situation is eroding your standard of living. your quality of life. to some degree is eroding because of inflation. it's the key issue. go at it. make us feel you understand it at our level. >> ainsley: let's roll through these three statistics quickly i want to get before we run out of time about the candidates and how much money they have made. most important to iowa republicans in picking a nominee 41 percent said economic issues. in south carolina 51 percent said economic issues are most important and 38% say the economy is the most important issue facing our country overall. so, let's talk about the candidates, who i had that the most money in the private sector? it looks like vivek ramaswamy. >> stuart: oh by a long way. >> ainsley: made a billion dollars. some say 650 million. >> stuart: between 600 million and 900 million. apparently just shy of being a billionaire. he is a very wealthy guy. >> ainsley: how did he do that?
