campaign trail ahead of the first republican primary debate. florida governor ron desantis hammering away at biden's policies in new hampshire. >> so we need to restore the idea that our economy should benefit people who are working hard, playing by the rules, and really know that our middle class again and to do that on day one i will take all of biden's rules, regulations and executive orders and throw them in the trash can where they belong. >> we'll see. we hear that on wednesday. griff jenkins live in d.c. what is keeping voters up at night. he has the story now. >> good morning. nothing keeps voters up at night like the stress of not being able to make ends meet or pay the bills. with the consumer prices up 16% they are telling us they are feeling the pain everywhere they turn. >> everything is through the roof, you know? you have to be a millionaire to live in d.c. >> i'm middle class and i am concerned about the inflation issues and interest rate hikes. >> inflation raised the cost of a lot of things. more expensive to go out to eat or pick up food at the grocery store. >> it's the economy stupid rings through again in the latest fox polling. 80% of voters say the condition of the economy in bad shape. only 35% of them see their personal financial situation in good or excellent shape. floridian steve redman said it's main issue driving his vote and telling us what he is looking for. >> somebody that knows how to fix the economy. somebody that has been a businessman and not a career politician. somebody that can walk in and say you know what? you know, let's work on this thing together. >> meanwhile alabama grandmother jessica mccabe worried for the economic future of her children and grandchildren. >> this isn't a republican or democratic problem. this is a problem with our government that's lost touch with the american people and they need to actually sit down and talk to us and see what are the problems. >> and you can bet this issue will be front and center at wednesday's debate with president biden vulnerable here, bill. 38% approve of his handling of the economy in the latest polling. >> bill: griff jenkins in d.c. >> dana: james freeman assistant editor of the "wall street journal" editorial page and fox news contributor. the latest poll asks what do you think about the state of nation's economy? not so good 34%. bill and i did quick math. 71% are saying not good or majority of those saying poor. if this is about the economy what can we expect? >> voters don't like inflation. we've been talking about that a lot. the white house wanted to take a bidenomics victory lap because inflation isn't as bad as it was last summer at the peak over 9%. but the problem for consumers is prices are still rising. >> bill: this is so true. >> obviously you look over the total of this era, most americans in real terms inflation adjusted have gotten a pay cut. they aren't happy about it. >> bill: read the other one. >> dana: this one from inflation punishes americans joe biden lies and lies. seems the overall biden strategy here just the lie and lie and lie and figure everyday voters will buy it. huge mistake. every trip to buy milk or fill the tank proves what a disaster bidenomics has been. the housing prices, trying to get into a new house at 8%, food, gas, also in a little bit we talk to somebody about the high cost of childcare. things that are essential if you go to work. >> i think the falsehoods are the reason that -- one of the reasons it's hard for the president to recover. you go back to 2021. the big -- i don't know if you can call it a lie. the massive falsehood the president told. the economy was struggling and needed to revive it. the economy was growing as more than 6% the quarter he took office. he did this massive spending plan which even his old obama administration economic colleagues say is inflation fuel. the economy was fine. he did radical surgery on it. we got the raging inflation. voters haven't forgotten it. >> bill: also this poll 62% disapprove of his handling of inflation compared to 34% who say they approve. we were out to eat friday night and saturday. i know i live in new york, right? it is pricey to live here. i grant you that. but when that bill came, i think all of us was you are kidding me? in some of these cases the vendors -- they are taking advantage of us a little bit here. but in a lot of cases they are just covering their own price. that is a stunning bill to get all over the country when you see that. >> there are a lot of restaurants in new york. if someone could do it better at a lower price they would. they have high costs. employees costs, food costs. i think this is part of the problem with the white house strategy is they are now celebrating three plus% inflation. pre-biden that was considered prices rising too fast. the federal reserve would normally act and want to avoid that. now they are wondering whether to tolerate higher inflation. and i think the message you are giving is the same as voters. they don't want to tolerate it. >> bill: i would add your portions are smaller, right? shrink inflation is real. >> dana: i need them to give me smaller portions. but i do want to ask about the white house communications strategy. they have decided to embrace bidenomics as a term out there complaining people don't understand how good the economy is. every one of their surrogates in the cabinet out there saying don't you understand the economy is so good? and i don't see them pivoting or if they do decide to pivot at what point could they make a difference for next year's election? >> they are running out of time. even some democrats are warning them. the basic strategy is that voters will tolerate all of our crazy ideas on border, crime, all of our racial obsessions because they are going to give the president credit for this economy. and at what point are they going to realize voters are not giving him credit? they have had a pay cut in real terms. prices still rising. i think this is a debate in democratic circles but so far the strategy is just to say bidenomics, embrace it and pretend it's working. >> bill: pretend we shall. thank you, james. james freeman. "wall street journal." thank you. >> they are afraid to charge him. they won't charge him. the case is disappearing. the statute of limitations is running but they are scared to death to charge him. >> bill: there it is. andy mccarthy last hour. hunter biden's lawyer threatened to put president joe biden on the stand in his son's defense. according to "politico" the first son's legal team vowed to put the president on the stand and talked to prosecutors about biden's plea deal. haven't heard this before, aishah. >> it's a stunning report from "politico." it comes from the 32-page letter, a letter written by hunter biden's attorney back in 2022. take a look at this. "politico" reports clark was warning prosecutors that president biden now unquestionably would be a fact witness for the defense in any criminal trial if there were to be a criminal trial, right? what followed, of course, was that wide scale what republicans call sweetheart plea deal that eventually did fall apart. on top of this, bill, it was also revealed over the weekend special counsel david weiss at one point worked with president biden's late son, beau, when he was the attorney general in delaware. that may sew further doubt for republicans that weiss can be unbiased. house oversight chairman james comer is demanding the national archives hand over unredacted records related to then vice president biden and ukraine after they uncovered that biden sent official emails using three different pseudonyms, hunter was copied on some of those emails. >> look, this is obvious that joe biden abused his power as vice president for the sole purpose to protect his son, who was receiving millions of dollars from this corrupt ukrainian energy company and this email ties joe biden and hunter biden into this corruption scheme without a shadow of a doubt. >> things keep getting more and more interesting. the whole of washington is anxiously waiting to see what david weiss does next but what house republicans do next. they're back after labor day weekend and see if they will launch an impeachment inquiry into the president. >> right now it is critical that people in los angeles stay safe and stay home. >> dana: urgent warning as the first tropical storm to hit los angeles in more than 80 years batters southern california. >> bill: republican governors in texas for a firsthand look with efforts to control the growing border crisis as the biden administration goes to court to fight texas on defending the border. >> dana: shoplifting is a problem for more cities coast to coast. is this the new normal? >> growing into an exorbitant issue that we don't know how to get a handle on. no real consequences for their actions. so it is just continuing to expand. the grocery store and the gas station alone are taking a big chunk out of our paychecks. fortunately, you've earned the valuable va home loan benefit. the newday100 va loan lets you borrow up to 100% of your home's value, not just 80%. and with home values near record highs, that could mean a lot of money. let newday turn your home's equity into cash.
