song and defied gravity the number one song on apple music's global chart not just in the u.s. and here's the reason why. look at the faces of people listening to this song for the first time, all oliver's song taps into something obviously for millions of people. there are lots of attacks coming at it from the media. headline after headline mocking this hit, painting the song as a quote, right wing anthem that f is, quote, offensive and fat phobic. but the criticism is not getting oliver anthony down he's staying true to his humble roots as a former factory worker turning down huge offers for record deals stadium concerts worth $8 million reportedly and here he is explaining his song watch. >> depression and suicide and money, you know, those are real problems. this song is not something that i -- it's not like it's some ed master piece i've created. it's -- the master piece and thi emotion ofec the song, they ne already exist within you. sometimes it just takes the right song coming along to let those out. >> martha: i think he's so right about that and i thought it was very interesting, pete, he said that this is the style of music that we never should have gottet awayen from, and it's really written from his heart about his own life experiences, and that's why you get a genuine reaction from people who are listening to it because it speaks to them. >> that's why it resonates is because it's real. t he's notha trying to pretend like -- not trying to the put him selves in the shoes of somebody who's had these om u struggles. he wrote it from a place of depression, of desperation, and simply said -- this is a guy whh worked the overnight shift for years and years and then got injured and then moved around, met a lot of different people and d he shares that through meeting people in virginia and other rural areas, their stories are the same, in a globalist world where politicians pedal you too can be an iter, you just learn to cod le and whatever yo an d your family have done for years that's yesterday. and it comes from both parties. i love the indictment that he a has made throughout his comments, i'm down the middle.s it's democrats on one side it's republican and foreign wars and good on him. i don't know how long he'll be able to resist these kinds of contract offers of a lot of money because he says he's living on almost next to nothing in a trailer with a tarp on top of it and a small property, but, man, what a voice.t and the first time i heard it, i thought, this is going to take off. >> it's a struggle that a lot of artists, to me he goes back to realto artistry.s he's writing music thabat means something to him and i do think that's why it connects with people katie, but the reaction in the media is really, i mean, on one hand it's so predictable. >> yeah. >> martha:o it's like wake up. wake up. your reaction is so predictable. reactionary, nostalgia they're calling it fat phobic you heard everything else g iti said, jus right wing anthem. >> i would encourage people not only to listen to it, which everybody has, but to actually read the lyrics because they ar the definition of what's happening to possibly al l over the appecountry. and for the media, you know, they are also part of the rich men north of richmond, the washington, dc national media that is very far left, that is always trying to pit americans against each other who come up with these narratives and act like they're not true when o they're happening to people every day.iv and for thest lie politicians w in the rich men north of richmond, they're ruining the lives of americans by spending d too much money, printing money, making things $700 more si expensive per month which is $9,000 a year. the average income for households in this country is $70,000. that's like 13% since last year. you can't afford anything anymore. and then the federal reserve tries to fix it, and the housing market becomes completely unaffordable. you can't even borrow money now to buy a house or to sell your house, it's become completely impossible. and the line that i really love in the song, outside of him talking about real things like suicide and obesity which are huge problems throughout the country, he says they don't think you know but i know you do. and the media's reaction is exactlthy whatat he's talking a. >> martha: greg what do you think about the reaction thiabos getting? >> greg: first of all, it's not my cup of tee, the song, the music, the style, that's not what i listen to. but that's not important, right? that's not what's important. what i found compelling was not the song but the reaction videos, the actual videos that h we showed, there were like 20 of them, and they're from all different backgrouts and all different races. and it reminded me of something that o we talked about on this show. obviously i hate the media. it's probably the one -- it's m why i'm in it because it's the only way you can make an impact on the media is being inside it and trying to destroy the awful and evil nature of it and i'll tell you why it's awful and evi. but we talked about what would life be like if media didn't exist. that's what it would b ie like,h right? you justat saw, when you saw th reaction videos, you see him singing, that's what the world s like if the media wasn't there to obliterate the sincere cohesion that exists between all men and women, sfliet if the media didn't exist, there wouldn't be mena filter that t you that this is a racist video or that it's, you know, it's nostalgic or hateful.gi but when the media is not there, that whole thing crumbles and all of a sudden the whole race n narrative falls apart as well.al for example, race is not a conduit for communication. right? that song is actually communication. right? and communicatin tg to white people, black people, hispanics, asians. so what we find out and what we have to understand is that we are individuals. we do not think or communicate as groups. we are individuals when we up communicate to other people, and that means individuals within s can have as much i innd common or even more in comn with individuals in other groups. a white guy can have more in common with a black guy, right? that's -- that's what this is really about. so wherin you look at that, to it's sad because it tells me what w e could have had for the longest time if we didn't have this grotesque monstrous thing called the media.th there are all these major themes in life and pigment doesn't change our shared aspirations for these themes, fortunately the media does. >> martha: jess, why do you think that these media representatives that greg talks about, why can't they embrace this song?an is i'tt -- what is negative in this song? >> jessica: well, in particular this line jumped out at me and i didn't read anything about it d first, this is the first time i've discussed it, i was like i'm just going te fio listen to song. there was one thing that stuck out in a really positive way an one thing that was more negative and when i read the during this time schism i saw it. lord we got folks in the streete abe got nothing to eat and the obese milking welfare so obviousloby it's picking on fatc people that's fat phobic but it is using the classic welfare queen trope that goes back to the 90s. i don't think it's racially t charged. there are peoplethit's of all rn welfare, a lot of them are heavy. anm ard we all know that. that's cruel to me. but the thing that stuck out in the positive direction and why imagine that there was so much emotional reaction to this was the line about how long your hours are and how hard you're working for the bs pay. he obviously used the expletive there. and it made me think back to the time when we had bernie sanders and donald trump talking about the same things in the 2016 primary. and they were tapping into this economic populism argument thatc was really resonating with far lefties and people on the right side of the spectrum and it was this idea that the deck is permanently stacked against yous it doesn't matter what you do. you can talking about just a month and a half ago or whatever it is about the small town and, you know, try it here with the images of what was going on in the summer of blm.in this had a lot of real working
