disaster in state history. confirmed deaths at 55. we're told that number will likely grow. none of the fires right now is fully contained. not one. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus." those fires have left a wasteland of obliterated neighborhoods and landmarks and think about the economy there with the businesses knocked down. they don't know when they can get in there and when tourism will be an option again. the historic city of lahaina, once hawaii's royal capital, is charred ruins now. survivors stunned at just how fast hurricane dora's winds helped the flames to spread. >> people are found in houses in a huddle. there was nowhere to go. >> beyond any other tropical storms, 100 times, covid, everything for our small town. >> people lost everything, homes, jobs, their cars, some their pets. there are still people missing. i have never seen something ravaged so fast. >> harris: take a look at the video. look at the sheer scale of damage. rescue crews now combing through the rubble of the destroyed areas and people and tourists who have come to visit that beautiful land are now trying to be evacuated. there is one airport that will cain from "fox & friends", who joined us yesterday, told us about, that people are trying to get to on that island and get out. our own will cain again has a unique connection to all of this. he used to spend his summers as a young boy on maui and his mom is still living on the island right now, she and her husband and trying to evacuate. hopefully trying to get out tomorrow. he was on "focus" yesterday. >> i grew up running around the streets of lahaina, i have a friend, local guy, and he is homeless. he has had his own hard times in life. substance abuse, mental health issues. i think about him today because we talk about what we can see on the screen but there is a big homeless population in west maui as well. i can't imagine how they would have fared through this devastation. my friends told me it happened so incredibly fast with 80 miles-an-hour winds. no one had notice. >> harris: fox weather max gordon is on the ground if maui. bring us up to speed and tell me if the weather will help out at all? >> heartbreak here on the island of maui. as far as the weather conditions are concerned, we're expecting the winds to start to die down. humidity to begin to increase as firefighters try to get a handle on these flames. you can see a roadblock behind me. we're 13 miles away from lahaina where the bulk of the damage is. police are letting residents in, though they are restricted from some areas where it is too dangerous to go. there is still hot spots in the town of lahaina and unfortunately they are still finding bodies of victims. as of now 55 people confirmed dead at this hour. now, fires burn throughout the island of maui right now. none of them are fully contained. it is unclear how these fires started but they were whipped up by ferocious winds and very dry conditions. the most destructive the fire on maui's west side which ripped through the community of lahaina, the fierce winds, hurricane dora made things even worse passing just south of the island contributing to those ferocious winds. according to the hawaii governor it destroyed more than 1,000 buildings and damaged the town's famous banyan tree. >> there will be active recovery of the days and weeks of the bones of those lost. so it will take time. to get perspective, it is going to take many years to rebuild lahaina when you see the full extent of the destruction of lahaina it will shock you. it does appear like a bomb and fire went off. >> now making matters worse cell towers and phone lines have been burned up in the blaze so communication is extremely difficult on the west side of maui. that means people can't get in touch with their loved ones, with friends, hundreds still remain missing. harris. >> harris: max gordon, thank you very much. later this hour i'm going to be talking with an official with hawaii state emergency response about the massive efforts now to save lives and provide help. she is coming from honolulu and when we talk with her, we'll hear what it has been like for people to actually get off of maui. more of the story in our live coverage right here on "the faulkner focus." to politics now. all eyes on the hawkeye state. gop candidates looking to show up and show out at the iowa state fair this week. the state's governor says iowans are not going to take it easy on them. >> iowans are engaged, they are turning out in record numbers. they are kicking the tires with all the candidates. they are listening and asking questions. i have had them come up to me today and just say hey, most importantly, we want to get a candidate that has a vision and can execute on day one. and bottom line, we want the candidate that we believe can win in 2024 and put a republican in the white house. and that's the mindset of iowans. >> harris: most of the candidates are poised to sit down with governor kim reynolds and her new fair-side chat series and have been speeches. they've been doing it since yesterday. they will do meet and greets and the state fair marks a pivotal step ahead of the january caucuses. january 15th. five months away. "politico" playbook is asking will iowa's cattle call thin the heard? asa hutchinson. candidate and former governor. you were at the fair yesterday. go back for your own fairside chat in the coming days. good to have you on the program and see you in "focus." give me your take on where it sits in terms of iowa's importance. >> well, iowa is very important, harris. whenever you look at what governor reynolds said she is exactly right. they will probably decide late. right now they are studying the candidates. the alternatives out there. they are looking forward to the debate, which is very important for their consideration. iowa is very engaged and they will winnow the candidates. they don't necessarily pick the one that will ultimately win but they narrow the field. i recognize that. that's why i'm devoting time to there and looking forward to the debate as well, which will be a critical time to differentiate yourself from the other candidates. >> harris: i called it a fireside. it is a fair-side, the play on words. it sounds like a lot of fun. i want to talk with you about the first rnc debate right here on fox news august 23rd. you haven't qualified yet fully. and the rnc has put forth the parameters for that. as of now five candidates have qualified for the first debate, which means polling, fundraising and a signed pledge that you will support anyone who turns out to be the republican candidate. vivek rams, ron desantis, nikki haley, doug burgum and tim scott have taken that pledge and met the other criteria. pence, trump and christie have yet to sign. tell me about the journey ahead and will you sign the pledge? >> first of all, we intend to be on the debate stage. yesterday we had over 2,000 new donors in a day. i need everybody's help. asa 2024.com. a dollar counts to get me on the debate stage. what's interesting about the debate, it looks like donald trump will be precluded from participating because he refused to sign the debate pledge and has indicated he won't do that. so it will be an interesting time. i think it will be an exciting debate about serious policy issues that face our country. and it will probably be more focused. so we intend to be there. in terms of the pledge, i think everybody is looking at they will be the nominee of the party and able to sign the pledge. i expect to sign it as well. we need to pull together to make sure we can win in november of 2024. >> harris: you mentioned donald trump and him refusing to sign the pledge. i want to read something to you, an op-ed that came to us, a new gop pledge calling it a trap. here is a quote. if trump refuses to sign and the rnc bans him from debates the party has banished its leading candidate. if trump refuses to sign and the rnc relents and lets him participate, the rnc will forfeit any authority it has over the process. it is a terrible choice. that's from "the washington examiner." what is your reaction to that? >> i agree it's not a good choice. the whole idea of the pledge is a bad idea. we should support the nominee of the party but shouldn't be signing blind pledges that are meaningless to it. donald trump indicates that it is meaningless. >> harris: let me ask you why you particularly have said that it is meaningless because one of the things that the left does so well is they get around that candidate in the end. the republicans have not done that as such, at least it hasn't been as effective as on the left. no matter who it would turn out to be as a republican you wouldn't support the republican who might go to the white house? >> i have always supported the republican nominee. i have fought hard in arkansas. >> harris: if it's trump? >> we have also fought against a pledge. the pledge is just -- it doesn't help us bring in independents and suburban voters. we need to make sure we can broaden the tent, not narrow it. we have always come together in varying ways but this year is more challenging than ever before because trump has indicated he is not going to support some of the nominees and so they are holding back on it. let's see how it develops but i expect to be able to support the nominee. >> harris: you kind of dodged my question. if it's trump, would you back him? >> let's -- i don't expect it to be trump so we shouldn't be a challenge for us. >> harris: i got it. "politico" had some nice things to say about you and they said the history of this, you were the one to beat before donald trump came along and in a piece entitled the totally not boring story of the most normal republican presidential candidate. here is a quote from it now. hutchinson has struggled amid the shifting sands of his party. while policy-wise he remains mostly in lock step as governor he signed one of the country's strictest abortion bans. lacks the fire breathing troll that animates most of the gop. what do you make of it? >> i think it's a challenge we face. this election will define the future of the republican party. and i don't believe that donald trump will define the future of the republican party in a way that is consistent with the principles that have been so historic of a limited government, of a strong leadership role that the united states plays. so it's really about who is a conservative but also who can lead effectively and not bring us into chaos and that can bring our country not necessarily together, but at least united around the common set of principles and values. and not to further that divide. so this is an important time in our country and i think that article articulated that i'm fighting for republican party that believes in those principles of reagan, lincoln, that -- of opportunity that can bring people into our party. people want to come in for our economic growth principles. >> harris: if you don't make the first debate will you stay in and try to get to the second in september, real quick? >> sure. if there is some reason we can't make the first debate we can make the second debate. with everyone's help we'll be there on the first debate. my voice is important. >> harris: are you closer to the 40,000 donors that you need? >> we're closer to it. we're not there yet but we have 10, 9 days left so we're on target to make it if everybody jumps in there and helps out. >> harris: asa hutchinson, thank you so much. i know you spoke yesterday and you'll be back for the fair-side chat in iowa. good to see you. >> thank you, harris. >> harris: thank you. democrat-led states pleading for help in funding to deal with tens of thousands of people who flowed into their sanctuary cities from the border. plus republicans saying the biden administration is making a dangerous deal with iran. >> going to result in exactly what you think it would result in. more hostage taking. again, we want to see hostages freed but this is not the way to do it. you will encourage the taking of more hostages. >> harris: team biden is going on the defense over their controversial plan to release american hostages. marc thiessen in "focus" next. this nation is broken. new york city has been left to pick up the pieces. new yorkers could be left with a $12 billion bill. >> harris: biden's border crisis has a new critic. the mayor of a sanctuary city with regrets now. eric adams is begging the federal government and white house for more money. a new state report with a dire warning, here it is, quote, the lack of federal policy adjustments and substantial matching share of funding for managing the asylum seeker influx has created an unsustainable fiscal issue for the city. unsustainable? check out all those red states along the border which have been crushed by the out of control illegal crossings under this president. president biden's border crisis. even a progressive democrat is going after biden. >> we need leadership from president biden, period. we need that leadership here in new york state because, you know, new york state is struggling to provide housing and the supports migrants need. democrats are looking bad in new york state right now. >> harris: he is a democrat in new york. can't he be part of the solution? i digress. biden did request an additional $4 billion from congress for the border crisis. critics are pointing out it is just 1/6 of what he asked for in new aid for ukraine. at the same time, the president himself is saying climate concerns only make migration a bigger problem. >> isn't the responsibility of the u.s. to protect migrants who might be fleeing extreme weather in their countries? >> president biden: look, i think the united states should do everything it can to help people who are in desperate need and have no other means of help. we've always done that. it is just who we are. >> harris: marc thiessen. i want you to write that reporters' questions? his responsibility is to take care of us. that's his first responsibility. she thinks it is other people. >> secure the border. it is as simple. his job. climate isn't the reason for this. this is a crisis of choice. he has the same law and funding and everything on the books that donald trump and barack obama had when they secured the border. they didn't have this border crisis, neither of them did. obama was called the deporter in chief. keep in mind, he hasn't just reversed trump's border policies but reversed barack obama's border policies and unleashed the worst border craves is in american history. when i hear mayor adams complaining. he is complaining about the cost to new york and wants money to solve it. cry me a river, mr. mayor. you are the one who declared your city a sanctuary city. now that people are using your sanctuary you are unhappy about it. the problem is not the cost. the problem is the flood of migrants because if they were not in new york city, guess what? they would be burdening another community somewhere else in the country. so you are a democrat, joe biden is a democrat, go to washington, ask for a meeting with the president and explain to him the disaster that his policies have unleashed on your city and ask him to secure the border. then we'll take you seriously when you ask for more money and resources to deal with this problem. until then, sorry, no sympathy for new york. >> harris: i apologize to everybody who might be grabbing a late breakfast or early lunch. you know what they are dealing with in park slope, brooklyn, the former home of the mayor, people relieving themselves in empty pizza boxes outside people's homes. expensive neighborhood there. unbelievable. explain that to your child walking on the sidewalk. they have no place to go. and they keep coming. the biden administration reaching an agreement with iran to release five detained americans. in exchange the united states will release $6 billion in iranian assets. the five americans in prison are placed under house arrest as the deal moves forward. republicans are furious with this agreement. >> the iranians wanted that money and now they are going to get it. we're now about a billion dollars a hostage. that will be recognized by the russians and north koreans. the chance that iran will take further american hostages. they can use it to put american lives at risk. >> harris: team biden defending the deal. here is john kirby. >> we're certainly mindful of all the bad things iran does to its own people and people throughout the region. this is a dangerous nation state and one we continue to challenge. >> harris: first of all, how does a deal like this get done? why is this happening? >> because we have incompetent people in the white house. ask yourself a question. if these hostages were being held by isis or al qaeda is there any scenario under which the united states would give those organizations $6 billion? of course not. why? they're terrorists. iran in a terrorist state. islamic radicals carried out terrorist attacks against the united states of american. they have as much american blood as isis and al qaeda. a terrorist state that a few years ago plotted to kill the saudi ambassador by blowing up cafe milano in washington, d.c. the restaurant where joe biden was having dinner with hunter biden's business associates. that plot was foiled. why would we give these people $6 billion? he says it's only for humanitarian relief for food and medicine. if the iranians need to provide food and medicine for their people. if they give them $6 billion for those things that frees up money for terrorism. it is insane to set a price of 1.2 billion on -- he is setting a ransom on the heads -- price on the head of americans to be taken hostage around the world. >> harris: i hadn't thought of it that way. that's what's happening. this sets that precedent. i hope we have good eyes on what house arrest means inside iran. >> they aren't even free. they aren't even home. how much does that cost? >> harris: i pray for their safety. great to have you in folk he can. unprecedented devastation in hawaii. hundreds missing, communities destroyed. dozens killed. i will talk with a hawaii an official. how do you go forward? stay close. >> harris: all right. so those fair-side chats have kicked off. this is miami mayor francis suarez joining governor kim reynolds in the fair-side chat. let's listen. >> to say they go from a spy base in cuba to a military training base 90 miles away from our shore. they have our advanced micro chips they make in taiwan. if they take taiwan it will put us into a depression. not only will it put us into a depression you can kiss these things goodbye. our cars that use technology and weapons systems. of course unfortunately graduating more ph.d.s in computer science than we are. have more 5g and focusing on quantum computing to read emails. i don't think so. >> you are trying to make miami kind of the center hub for technology and innovation. with all of the things you put in place i can see why that's happening. >> yeah. >> so biden's border crisis is affecting all 50 states. we're experiencing it here. statistics over the last three months are just really concerning, shocking, unconscionable. it still is worse in places like texas, arizona and florida. we asked iowans to submit questions katie from madison county wanted to know what three specific actions you would take to control the border. >> i was there yesterday. i saw the difference in intentionality from the last administration to this administration. i literally stood in a junction where the last administration's wall stopped and this administrations wall began. to give you a sense, one of the walls was 30 feet high, unclimbable. the other one my 9-year-old would have had fun climbing it in two seconds. we need to be intentional about protecting our border. we need to instead of -- you want to defund something, lets defund the 87,000 i.r.s. agents. let's defund that and why don't we use that for border patrol agents and technology to make sure that our border is safe. then the last thing is i think we really need to designate the cartels a terrorist organization. they are flooding our streets with fentanyl. 80 to 90,000 americans die every year. that's the equivalent of a 747 crashing every single day. think about the national tragedy that was the submersible. think of a 747 were crashing every day not talking about the human trafficking crisis which is a bigger revenue generator for the cartels than drugs. it's awful. i don't know how many of you have seen sound of freedom. the i don't know how many of you have seen it? yeah? executive producer lives in miami and telling me the story what they do with kids and as a father it is shocking. we need to have a strong president that projects american strength. we have a president right now that is projecting weakness. >> harris: we're watching the mayor of miami, francis suarez talk with the governor of iowa and her early sit-downs fair-side chats. fascinating to hear from the candidates. as we see more of them this hour if they pop up, we'll definitely pop in on them. all right. more now on our top story. the devastating hawaii wildfires, at least 55 people have died in maui. around 1,000 people remain unaccounted for. i have said that number hopefully will go down as they find more survivors. nearly 2,000 buildings, billions of dollars in property gone. in "focus" now cindy mcmillan. spokesperson for hawaii's joint information center, part of the state's emergency management agency and cindy, first of all, tell me what today, when you woke up today, what were you facing? >> first of all let me just say thank you for having us on. we know that many people around the nation love hawaii and are concerned about the impact of these deadly wildfires. everybody here is so devastated by the loss of life and the property and historic community. but right now today as we wake up, our efforts are focused on search and rescue. when daylight approaches. it is approaching. search and rescue will be underway. we will also focus on evacuating residents and visitors from the island so we can take pressure off the shelters that are there and going to support those folks with some services. >> harris: how long have you lived in hawaii? >> i've lived in honolulu since 1996. 20 plus years. it's home, yes, it's home. >> harris: as you watch a nearby island burn. i have been there. you aren't too far. a quick plane ride. as you watch and see the smoke and know people jumped into the ocean to get away from the flames and perished because the smoke sufficient indicates them from what i'm reading what goes through your mind. >> it is terrifying and horrifying. hawaii is a pretty small community. we all have friends or families impacted by this. the loss of life, the loss of commerce, the loss of business, the loss of the historic community. this is a community that was once the capital of hawaii. our native queen is buried there. it's an unimaginable loss. >> harris: i didn't know all of that detail. and what to do about those historical burial grounds, too, is complicated. if they aren't charred they are covered with everything else. talk to me about the future. the first things that you'll do once you are past the immediate still putting out the flames and finding people. >> you are right. the fires are not out yet. the fire department is actively fighting the flare-ups and hot spots. at this point all levels of government from the local, the state, the federal, we're all working together with our private sector partners to make sure we can protect lives and sustain the survivors. once we get to a point where the fires are -- it is safe for people to go back in, then the damage assessment will begin. this will be individuals going and assessing their homes, businesses assessing what they've lost and fema is helping with this assessment. the president has declared a major disaster. so things are moving forward but i know that we all feel a sense of just -- we want to do more and more and more. >> harris: it is shocking. >> it is shocking. >> harris: shocking. blessings to you, your beautiful state. that gorgeous island. cindy mcmillan, thank you for your time. >> thank you, we appreciate your concern. >> harris: always. house oversight chairman james comer has ramped up his investigation again. he is looking at the biden family's financial records getting his hands on more. he wants to subpoena the president now and hunter biden. >> we've looked at joe biden's financial disclosures over the years. it is hard to figure out how someone that lived on a politician's salary can accumulate that much wealth. so there are a lot of questions. >> harris: it's not just the president and first son, though, who allegedly made big dollars off the oversees business deals. we'll break it down. plus an artificial intelligence bot which generates meal plans for shoppers. what could possibly go wrong? how about recipes that sound like poison. bleach rice surprise. it happened. raymond arroyo in "focus" next. raymond arroyo in "focus" next. credit cards and car loan with an affordable va home loan from newday. you can save $500 every month. rates on credit cards have gone up to 22%. for late payments, as much as 30%, more than three times higher than a newday va loan. pay off your credit cards and car with a newday100 va loan and save. which hotel? >> look, harris, it's just one shell company that chad mentioned there with the breakdown in that tree. the bidens have more bed hopping intrigue and exploits than another family at this point. when you look at what comer's committee has uncovered, more than 20 shell corporations, $20 million and counting from places like russia, kazakhstan, china. the question is what were they doing for the money, harris? and secondly, it's an important point that comer raises. let's say that this was all legitimate money. that they were somehow doing some service to these foreign oligarchs. they didn't pay taxes on $20 million plus according to comer. that needs to be scrutinized. that is illegal. you just can't do it no matter what your last name is. >> harris: so chairman comer is now saying when he subpoenas president joe biden. when he subpoenas his son, hunter biden. the shift. what is your take on it? >> well, i think the preponderance of evidence is such now when you look at the $20 million. another key finding that has been overlooked. six policy decisions were connected to this pay for play and influence scheme where you see a corporation sending money to the bidens or one of their shell companies and suddenly a policy that they are advocating is moved forward via joe biden or subordinates. that's a huge concern. it shows that there was an influence scheme at play. if they can prove that and the only way to do is to subpoena the primary players. you have an f.b.i. and department of justice not cooperating with the oversight committee and you are not going to get justice from either of those agencies. it is up to congress to ferret out the truth and take it to its natural end. justice needs to be done here. >> harris: we'll get to this. a new zealand supermarket artificial intelligence experiment is creating risky recipes. home cooked meals by entering any three ingredients. when some tested if tech by typing in harmful chemicals the system didn't reject it. a.i. is it sounds tasty. made for bizarre suggestions. aromatic water mix with invigorating sense of ammonia, bleach and water. users reported recommendations of a bleach-infused rice surprise and methanol bliss mock tail. oh, raymond. >> look, they call this thing the save me meal bot. there are no governors on this a.i. look, it is a little unfair this story. it is not like the bot is spitting out the toxic harmful recipes. people are maliciously and deliberately entering toxic items like bleach and ammonia and ant poison. >> harris: shouldn't a.i. tell the difference? you were supposed to use pap rika and such and such. it is not like i expect a.i. to know the difference between pap rika and chili powder. >> they have banned the substances or ingredients from their recipe bought. you can't put them into the bot. i tried it earlier. they've cleaned up their act. >> harris: they had to cancel the ingredients to keep us safe from a.i. >> like politics. the outcomes are only as good as what you put in. that's what happens in the recipe and in our political lives. >> harris: bringing it all home. celebrity show of support for democratic president hopeful robert f. kennedy, jr. woody harrellson is posing with his hat and the candidate's wife. his hat says kennedy 2024. harelson and rfk junior have criticized and both criticized the government's covid response. we lost woody. woody harrellson canceled himself. woody went to the dark side. raymond. >> you know what i see here. wearing a hat with a friend doesn't necessarily mean he is endorsing rfk junior but so what if he is? celebrities endorse people all the time and people don't lose their lives over it or blow up the internet. in this case, it reveals the toxicity, i think, of our politics now. you have a majority of democrats who think biden should not run and when an alternative comes forward you have a group of people who pounce on anybody that dares support that alternative candidate or suggests that he should get a listening to. that's all harelson is doing here. woody harrellson and rfk junior have long been opponents of the pharmacy and military. it makes sense. >> harris: what you said makes a lot of sense. who cares he supports whoever he wants to. hollywood is actually not america. >> that's true. it is a little slice of something that's fallen off of america and usually is on strike. but poor woody. he wore a hat with a friend. give him a break. >> harris: last one for you. this is breaking out at the iowa fair. we took a little live and dip in as the candidates are up and down in the chair at the fair-side. your last quick take on what's happening out there? >> well, i think what you are seeing is a group of candidates trying to garner some following and donald trump is just dominating the field, harris, without showing up. i think he is making an appearance at the fair but he may not make this debate. it seems he wants to protect his advantage and these other guys are having difficulty getting traction. i'm glad they're at the fair. the voters deserve to hear their plan. we'll see what happens. >> harris: thank you, raymond.
