So this remains a Search And Rescue operation. In fact, were told a number of individuals are still up in lahaina. They survived the fire but they dont want to leave because they wont get back. In the video i want to show you is from lahaina. Thats the commercial heart of this island and it was literally destroyed, right . So it burned to the ground. Historic front street. The pioneer whaling hotel, shops galleries and restaurants burned to the ground. Some got out just ahead of the flames. Others were either caught by surprise or blocked by downed power poles and debris from getting out. Along with dozens who were rescued from the water, we are told the water itself was on fire as the area from break water to the war warp is a prety tight area. Because there was so much gasoline from the sinking boats it too was on fire. We just heard horrific things that there were hundreds of people in the ocean, hoping that boats would be picking them up. Boats have been picking them up, but the entire harbor was on fire. Boats were on fire due to fuel. And its just its awful. So were told about 10,000 are still without power, no cell or land lines. That makes it especially hard for those trying to find out how their friends and family are they still alive . About 1,000 spent the night at a shelter, 11,000 tourists have moved off the island, evacuated from hotels and condos. I had no clue the desks until we hopped on the bus and we saw the carnage with all the homes burned and all the businesses burned down. As for the fires, the weather is improving. The residual winds from Hurricane Dora down now in the 20 mileperhour range. The National Guard has water dropping helicopters here to help an undermanned Fire Department and Officials Say the hospitals are not overwhelmed but they continue to see victims with smoke inhalation. President biden today approved hawaiis disaster declaration and promised help for maui. Were working as quickly as possible to fight these fires and evacuate residents and tourists. But, when you talk to India National Security Officials they are far more worried about china and the massive military buildup thats happening right now on chinas border with india than they are with pakistan at this point. And were seeing pakistan now move right into the arms of the chinese despite the long relationship we have had with them. Bret we have a lot of things happening on capitol hill in regards to china. Are we as a country doing enough to counter chinas activities around the globe . No. From one perspective, look at the steel plants in the world. The top 15 steel plants, nine of them are in china. Bret, guess how many are in the United States. Zero. We went from the top exporter of steel to the top importer of steel. Why arent we doing more to build modern steel here. Why arent we doing more to build modern aluminum here . There are things we need to be building and we have got to lower the Trade Deficit with china. To say me, thats the biggest miss. I think we are in a bipartisan way taking action to arm taiwan, make sure we have naval peter. Superiority. We could only muster four in response. Part of that is that our Ship Building in the United States has completely atrophied. We dont have the Raw Materials like steel and like other types of manufacturing and so i think you see a lot of agreement we have to get that back in the United States and what the chinese are counting on is that we cant we literally cant afford to compete anymore. If the director of federal bureau of investigation says he is aghast to find what he then called a draft memo im aghast, too. Its pretty outrageous and pretty claim bureaucratic defense to say well, just a couple people in this one office. Oh, yeah, other offices, too. Comes at a time, of course, when the fbis reputation is under fierce assault, having to do with everything from the Trump Administration to other matters this is ad not a good look for the fbi. Bret just a few moments ago at a Fundraiser Out West President Biden was talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and heres what he said at this fundraiser, quote i wish i hadnt called it that. It has less to do with inflation than it does providing alternatives to Economic Growth even when there is inflation there is a way to provide breathing room. Maybe you get what he is trying to say there. There was all this talk about why do you call it the Inflation Reduction Act, julia . He is saying the silent part out loud. Yeah. Thats exactly what i was going to say he is really going into something that democrats have really been struggling with. They have been trying to tout the Economic Growth indicators under the Biden Administration specifically pointing to unemployment. But the problem is thats not translating in the polls. We see that americans are still feeling pain at the pump and pain at the Grocery Store because of inflation. The Biden Administration continues to talk about how great the Inflation Reduction Act is. Thats not going to translate well with voters. So, right now, maybe were seeing some sort of a rejiggering of that messaging. Bret i mean, the one good part for the biden Communication Team was that it wasnt on camera. It was a quote at a fundraiser. The press said this has very little to do with inflation. Months and months later they finally come clean. Maybe bidenomics is this. We never said bidenomics. Bret yeah, right. Meantime, the republican side, the debate is coming up. They have to sign this pledge that they are going to support the republican nominee. Nikki haley saying all right, fellas, your turn. She tweets her signed pledge supporting the republican no, maam to me. The former president , although is saying he is not doing it. I mean, i have a problem with the debate for another reason. I wouldnt sign the pledge. Why would i sign a pledge . There are people on there i wouldnt have. I wouldnt have certain people as somebody i would endorse. They want you to sign a pledge. I can name three or four people that i wouldnt support for president. Bret so he says he is going to make a decision next week whether he is going to show up on the stage or not. But what about that, not signing the pledge . The pledge really deals with the rnc hands over their data to the nominee or the people running and kind is more logistics than anything else. The rnc has their rules in order to be in the debate certain polling threshold, donor threshold. They want you to say you will support whoever the nominee is and share data with them. I was actually really interested because Chris Christie came out early and said he would not support donald trump if he were the nominee which would seem to mean he couldnt be on the debate stage. I dont know how big of an issue this is at this stage for republican voters. They do want to see these people out there. They want to see how they perform in debates. I dont know if they care quite so much on that. Bret Iowa State Fair asked some of the candidates. Some of them might have a hard time getting to the stage, but they were all out there. Asked them what they will do on day one. Day one, im going to pardon donald trump. I would resume construction on the wall. I would reverse the antitrump border policies. On day one, take all the Biden Regulations and executive and we are going to throw them in the trash can on january 20th, 2025. What would you do on the first day in office . Sell energy to our friends and allies, stop buying it from our adversaries and our enemies. Bret julia, its going to be a long trek here but the Iowa State Fair is a big part of it. It is a big part of it. There is potentially some opportunity, a very small window of opportunity, though. There is a New York Times Siena College poll that came out last week that shows donald trump with 454 in the lead nationally. In iowa, thats 10 points lower. So he is maybe somewhat more vulnerable. That is sort of giving some optimism to the Desantis Team but, once again, a very much uphill climb. Briefly jump back into the pledge. We are all guessing e dominates the news. He may use this as a cover. Lets say he gets. In he doesnt win, which is unlikely at this point. And he decides not to support the nominee.
