jonathan hunt is live watching this writing situation unfold. jonathan, good evening. >> jonathan: good evening. there are stunning and devastating. just emerging from the island of maui tonight. with the popular tourist town appearing to have been largely destroyed. take a look at these pictures. they are breathtaking. at least 66 people have died in the fires. hundreds of homes and businesses have burned to the ground and it appears many as 10,000 or so year-round residents will now be homeless. as a result of what is certainly the worst natural disaster to hit the hawaiian islands in decades. possibly the worst ever. >> the main focus right now is to stabilize and preserve lives. are secondary, of course, is to try to save as much property as possible. >> jonathan: unlike the hurricanes that hawaii is what used to, this externally powerful fire fled up with most flared up little warning and it quickly burned through dry brush and trees and into the wooden homes and stores that make up a majority of the buildings in lahaina. >> nobody was prepared for this. local people have lost everything. they lost their house. they lost their animals and it is devastating. >> jonathan: president biden send his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and prayers for all those who have lost homes and businesses. he thanked firefighters and first responders. as he put it, running toward danger and trying to save lives and the president said all available federal resources will be sent to help. the damage already done. it appears frankly catastrophic. and as the smoke begins to accrue, it feels inevitable that there will be more bad news and more heartbreak, trace. trouble if you go to malychai you go to lahaina town. now it is gone. see the before and after pictures. back to you in moments. let's bring in a resident who just evacuated after his home burned down. we are very sorry for your loss of your home. you described this as apocalyptic. can you tell me what it was like in the hours that the fire was burning? >> yes. where i live and unfortunately i didn't make it down town but you could see just huge plumes of smoke. and hovering over the town and going over the ocean. and the fire spread very rap rapidly. within an hour, we got evacuated from my house and my house was half mile down from where the fire entered the front street and my house came out. i have heard tales and i saw video of bodies lying in the street. things like that. it was apocalyptic. eye it is -- unfortunately. just looking at these videos. i have never perceived anything quite like this before. i'm from new orleans. i went through katrina, which is a totally different animal. there's no fires involved. this makes it like a war zone. that is very much the way it seems like. >> trace: if you know katrina, you have a very good feel for what this is like as we look at the pictures. and noticed earlier we saw some real pictures and it was totally different. unbelievable because the harbor is gone. the boats are gone and it only took 2 1/2 or three hours you are saying for the entire thing to be wiped out. tell us about that. >> yeah. we have so -- did not have cell service at all. we start getting texts from a lot of people who were there on the street and they were able to get video and let us know what they saw and what was going on. and again, looking at the aftermath, i have seen a lot of the same videos that you have seen and everything and it looks completely different. it does not look like the same place at all. it really looks bombed out. it is madness. you don't wake up in the morning expecting this to happen and be done with and it is not the width. but your town could be wiped out before sunset, before sunset, you know? is it chaos or is it kind of standard operating procedure? >> welcome everybody is going to make adjustments during the course of the campaign. i respect that. clearly, he has fallen in the polls and so he wanted to make some adjustments. we will see if that works for him. we are focused on our campaign. we got enough on our plate to deal with right now. >> trace: i wonder how you would do with the issue of abortion because you look at the house last night and their issue one was -- it was a bit victory for -- big victory for abortion-rights supporters. the result was a rare disease -- defeat for republican ballot in ohio and where the gop controls the office of governor and both chambers of the state legislature. i'm wondering for you, sir, is the gop handling this issue adequately? curriculum or pride books. here is the attorney for the parents and we will get your response. >> montgomery county school board's policy says that if you are a high school student and -- in a sex-ed class, you can opt out of any aspect of the class including ones that talk about diversity and inclusion of lgbtq students. but if you are in kindergarten, prekindergarten through fifth grade, they are not allowed to opt out at the same instruction that is being infused into starbucks and story hour. >> trace: the 18-year-old can opt out. the five-year-olds are stuck. >> and it is funny because in the court filing that they did today in the district court in maryland, one of the books that they talk about, which was the book that they are waiting to kindergartners and first graders, they have a word search and within the edward said, they are searching for words like leather and intersects -- intersex. and they are trying to circumvent the law. the law says they have to offer parents and opt out if it is within the realm of family health and sexuality and they are saying, instead we are going to do this in the middle of the classroom today and we are not going to tell you or notify you and you have no right to up your own children out. >> trace: yeah, it is amazing. education week. i want to put this survey up because i thought, a man, this is interesting. teachers who are very satisfied, 20% of teachers, teachers likely to leave in the next two years, bethany, 35% in the next two years. i mean, cops are more satisfied with their jobs than teachers in the united states. >> yeah, a lot of t that is the violence in the classroom and their inability to control the violence. not just the violence. it is all part of all part of the same package. the violence, the mental health, a lot of this was exacerbated tenfold by our response to the covid could not covid, a response to covid. masking kids for a year after they closed the schools, all of these things have made the classroom war zone and teachers are like, i don't want to do this. rewind into the maryland story from seconds ago, a lot of the teachers were opposed to this also. we don't know where it is coming from. a lot of these sort of lgbt focused sort of initiatives instead of literacy and math, all these things, teachers are not necessarily always on board and they are like, can we focus on
