Department. Good evening, david. Bret, tonight we are learning of 8 additional visits in 2016 to the white house by Hunter Bidens then business partner. If you ask Attorney General Merrick Garland about the federal investigation into hunter biden, dont expect a long answer. He appeared before a Senate Committee today to talk about the budget but the conversation quickly changed to the president s son. Do you have any reason to dispute the evidence that indicates that President Biden was involved with and using money from hunts Business Deals. We dont discuss cases. Attorney general Merrick Garland peppered by lawmakers about the ongoing federal investigation. Do we need a Special Prosecutor to look into the hunter biden, you know, affair . A question of whether to have a Special Counsel is one that is internal decisionmaking of the department, so i dont want to make any judgments one way or the other. Hunter biden made millions from what critics call questionable Business Deals in both ukraine and china. If republicans win the house or senate this fall, they pledge to investigate the younger biden. Trump appointed u. S. Attorney David Weiss In Delaware is running the probe. Garland also pressed on other high profile subjects at todays senate hearing. I think the Justice Department is losing. I think you are losing on crime. Do you agree that the governments inability to secure the southern border has led to more drugs coming in to our country . The job of the Justice Department is to fight the large scale Drug Trafficking organizations that are bringing this moneythese drugs into the country. The Attorney General also questioned on another dire issue. Rising crime rate in cities large and small. There is no one solution fits all that the federal government can suggest to state and local law enforcement. Back to the investigation into the president s son, sources we know, actually, bret, hunter biden has not been charged with a crime. What i was going to say is sources say that grand jury proceedings in this case have significantly picked up in recent weeks. Bret . Bret more on this with the panel. David, thank you. Breaking tonight, new information about how Many Americans may have had covid19. This comes with news that Vice President Kamala Harris has tested positive. White house correspondent Jacqui Heinrich has our report. New numbers from the cdc show nearly 60 of americans have had covid at least once. Almost double from the same time last year. Now Vice President Kamala Harris adds her name to that list. She is boosted, twice boosted. We have a very, very contagious variant out there. The v. P. Has no symptoms but her illness puts a spotlight on the virus as the white house sounds the alarm over funding. We may get a whole new generation of vaccines in the fall or winter that may be more effective and more durable. None of those are going to be available to the American People if we dont get more funding. We are tracking the treatment. On capitol hill republicans broadly oppose another covid bill slow so long as the white house is charging forward to end pandemic restrictions at the southern border. The Biden Administration is claiming the pandemic is over and finished on our southern border. Now, they dont believe the pandemic is over, however, for american citizens. Though the white house consistently punts responsibility to the cdc title 42, the authority was given to the cdc by congress. They made a decision. If Congress Wants to decide, make any decisions about the next steps for title 42, they can Work Together on that. Democrats who just met with the president say he is eager to end it. Title 42 was just an excuse to keep people out of our country. This administration, the president himself said that he is going to be looking forward to lifting title 42. The white house painting that as no secret. Is the president really wanting title 42 to go away because it was a trump era policy. The president has never felt that title 42 was an effective Immigration Policy and he talked about that during the campaign. Today the Supreme Court heard Oral Arguments over another trump era policy the Biden Administration is trying to end thats remain in mexico it requires migrants wait outside the u. S. For asylum hearings. Right now a little bit unclear where this going to go. Chief Justice John Roberts asked of his colleagues what are we to do . So we dont have a clear idea, bret where exactly the votes might lie. Bret Jacqui Heinrich on the north lawn thank you. The controversy over title 42 a National Guardsman who lost his life trying to save two Illegal Immigrants in the rio grande river. Influx of Illegal Immigrants shows no sign of letting up. Mixed in with them, texas dps says was this suspected Mexican Drug Cartel member. In the rio grande yeah Border Patrol arrested ebb child sexual. And arrested two ms13 members over the weekend. Border are agents arrested this Child Sex Predator in mexico previously convicted of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. And, bret, here in del rio sector just this past weekend alone, there were more than 2,000 illegal crossings, that includes 67 unaccompanied children and six convicted criminals. In the meantime, there have been nearly a quarter million illegal crossings in this sector just since october. Those numbers up about 160 over the same time last year. Well send it back to you. Bret bill melugin along the border. Thank you. Lets bring in Georgia Democratic senator jon ossoff a member of the judiciary and Homeland Security committees. Senator, thanks for joining us on Special Report. Hey, bret, thank you for having me. Bret i want to talk to you about Bipartisan Legislation you are working on first follow up on bills report on the border and the debate in your party in particular about title 42. And where that should be with immigration. Where are you on this . Well, i expect we are going to vote on title 42 this week. Im doing my Due Diligence reviewing the ruling from the louisiana district judge. I was briefed earlier today by secretary mayorkas. I will make a wellinformed decision when that vote is on the floor. And i think that its important for us to acknowledge in congress the following. That this is deeper than title 42. And heres what a lot of folks in congress, whether they are democrats or republicans refuse to acknowledge. Democrats are afraid to talk about Border Security. And republicans are afraid to talk about establishing a Path To Legal Status for the folks who are here and otherwise follow the law who are part of our society. And, until we are willing to acknowledge that, and until we are willing on that basis to pass legislation that secures the border, and that addresses the undocumented persons who otherwise follow the law in this country at a time when we have severe workforce shortages, we are going to be relitigating these same issues year after year after year whether its title 42 or remain in mexico. Because the crisis at the border will not be addressed. Its up to us in congress to get it done. We have to be honest with ourselves and willing to have an open conversation in order to do so. Bret senior, you are senior senator from georgia by a nose. But, before your time here, there are obviously, as you know, been many efforts down this road and republicans wont get there unless the Border Security is first. So, there is all kinds of talks about a grand bargain and a comprehensive plan. But it never gets across the finish line. Were one election away from solving a big issue, it seems like this. So i guess how do you get there right now in this Emergent Situation . Well, i think it starts with being honest. Being honest means acknowledging that we have a serious deficiency when it comes to Border Security. Its systemic it predates this administration or this congress. The United States must be able to know and control who enters exits our territory. Thats what makes us a country. We currently lack that capability. And in some places that may buildings physical infrastructure. In other places it means approval our ability to surveil the border and conduct enforcement operations. It also means ensuring that we have the infrastructure on our side of the border to adjudicate asylum cases. So that we dont have backlogs that last months and years. It also means that we need to have an honest conversation about the folks who are here without proper documentation and otherwise follow the law at a time when businesses are short of workers, rather than them remaining in the informal economy and in the shadows. Establishing a Path To Legal Status. Americans overwhelmingly support both of these policies, Border Security, real effective Border Security. And a pathway for those who are here without documentation otherwise follow the law. But what you hear in congress is partisan rhetoric, neither side willing to acknowledge the reasonable points that the other side makes. Im willing to make those acknowledgments, have that conversation, support both Border Security and that pathway for those who are already here. Bret we welcome that conversation with republicans and democrats here to talk about solutions. You know, this is a Political Year and democrats are facing an Uphill Battle on a number of fronts, immigration being one of them. A crime across the country being another one. The other issue is inflation. When somebody says to you what are democrats doing to address inflation, what do you say . Well, look, the economic stress that begins with the global pandemic, unprecedented effects on supply chains. Over 14 . Massive economic Ripple Effects in every region of the world. And a massive fiscal and monetary response, all of the associated shocks to our Logistics Infrastructure have all taken a toll. Family in my state of georgia and families across the country are struggling with a rapidly rising prices of staples like groceries and gasoline. Congress has a role to play. The fed has a role to play because its something that effects families in my state and states across the country every single day. Bret quickly, tangibly could you point to one thing the Biden Administration or you democrats in control have done to deal with inflation . Well, i can talk about what i have done and what im willing to do. I have focused my attention, for example, on helping to unravel the Supply Chain Bottleneck at the port of have a sauna in georgia. We have the fourth largest Deep Water Port in the country and Busiest Airport in the world. I have played a supportive role in georgias infrastructure fewer ships standing off those ports a major contribute contributor to bottlenecks. Possible legislative deal to address inflation in the weeks to come. Im willing to have that conversation with senator manchin and any colleagues to bring ideas to the table. Bret thank you, senator. I want you to weigh in on this legislation. You have been working with senator ron johnson about some concerns about military families. Explain that for our audience. Sure. So, in my home state of georgia, i represent the folks that fort gordon which is a major and Strategic Military installation. It hosts the Army Cyber Center for excellence. Major sigma corps and military Intelligence Units and in the first few months after my elections i went out to fort gordon. Met with military families and enlisted personnel and heard nightmarish accounts of private advertised housing on posts. Infestation, contamination, unsafe living conditions, environmental hazards. A company that was Unresponse Stoift needs of my constituents, these Service Members and their families. They asked me to take action. So i launched an eight month intensive investigation as chair of the permanent subcommittee on investigation working in a bipartisan way with the Ranking Member on that subcommittee. My colleague senator ron johnson, we reviewed Tens Of Thousands of pages of records. We interviewed dozens of witnesses and what we determined is that the mistreatment of military families at fort gordon, at Shepard Air Force base in texas, and military installations across the country continues. We heard today in my Subcommittee Testimony from Service Members whose children and spouses have faced Significant Health effects from the contamination of their homes that was not remediated by the Company Responsible for their housing. This is a systemic issue. This is widespread. Thats why i launched this investigation to establish the facts of the matter. And when we found is that not only is this continuing systemically across the country, its continuing even after this company was found by the department of justice and convicted of a scheme to defraud the United States between 2013 and 2019. Im going to continue working to expose the abuse and mistreatment of military families whether in my state or across the country this report is a part of that effort. Bret we have done stories on that on Special Report. We appreciate you coming on and welcome back. Thank you so much. Bret stocks lost more than. Borders of inflation and growth. Dow pludged 809. Antony blinken testified before the Committee Says russia does not appear ready or in the mood to top peace this as the nations top defense official says the conflict between russia and ukraine is not a proxy war for russia and the u. S. Defense secretary lloyd austin talked with National Security correspondent Jennifer Griffin who was on that trip. Here is part of her interview. An hour after you left kyiv with secretary blinken, there were russian missiles that struck the rail lines five spots along the rail line. You traveled out by rail. Were they targeting the u. S. Delegation . The railway at large is a target that you would expect for them to go after but hard to say. I doubt that they had specific knowledge of where we were at any one point in time. Russias foreign minister Sergey Lavrov says the potential for a nuclear war is real. Do you consider this hyperbole or is this a threat. Saber rattling and rhetoric like that is just unhelpful. Hard to say whats motivating mr. Lavrov but, again, i think that kind of talk should be avoided. How would you respond if russia used a Tactical Nuclear weapon. I dont want to comment on any kind of response we would make. What my job is, jen, is to offer the president a range of options for anything that happens. I feel confident that i can do that no matter what happens. Yesterday you said the goal is to weaken russia at the end of this conflict. Why not say defeat russia. We are not in a fight with russia. Ukraine is in a current struggle with russia. And what ukraine desperately wants is to make sure that it can protect its govern territory. We want to make sure that were helping ukraine do that. Was there anything you could have done to deter putin. Ukrainian had the types of things that they needed. They were successful in stopping the advance of the russians in a number of places around the country and defeating the russians and the north around kyiv. Are you worried this might be turn into a proxy war between the u. S. And russia. No. Its not. This is clearly ukraines fight. And ukraines neighbors and allies and partners are stepping up to make sure that they have what they need in order to be successful. How important is the next few weeks on the fight on the ground in ukraine . Its absolutely important. Every day is important in a fight like this. But you dont believe that this will end in a nuclear war. I do not. Everyone thats in this neighborhood thats a part of the International Community are going to do, you know, everything thats necessary to make sure that that doesnt happen. We have new Polling Information on some of the key races developing for novembers midterm elections. We will talk live with virginias governor in just a bit about how the culture wars are playing on other key issues in the falcon test. First, here is Chief Washington correspondent mike emanuel. Make America Great again. On the republican race on the senate side president trumps name isnt on the ballot his name is mentioned often. The reason mehmet mentioned trump he cant run on his own records. Dr. Oz who has the trump endorsement was asked if it is time to turn the page on the 2020 election. Under the cover of covid there were draconian changes made by democratic leadership. In ohio support for author vance has doubled launching him ahead in the state primary. State treasurer josh imagined and mike gibbons. Vance jumping from 11 in march to 23 now. With gibbons appearing to losed most. Vance was once a trump critic but now has his endorsement. 42 in the fox poll say that makes them more supportive of vance. In the Georgia Senate race, former football star Herschel Walker who mr. Trump is backing appears to have a dominant lead. Walker is up 59 with the other republican candidates all in single digits. There is Political Risk for trump if republican primary voters are picking nontrump endorsed candidates. It could signal a sign of weakness for the president. We are in a fight for the soul of our state. In georgias g. O. P. Gubernatorial primary the trump backed candidate former senator david perdue is far behind governor brian kemp. If kemp earns more than 50 support that would be significant avoiding a primary runoff. The poll in that race the majority says the former president s endorsement made no difference or made them less likely to back a candidate. Bret . Bret mike, thanks a lot. Joining us tonight is Virginia Republican governor glenn youngkin. Governor, thanks for being here. You got us, governor . Governor, can you hear me . Its bret baier. No, there is no bret all right. We just disconnected here. Governor youngkin, can you hear us now . Hang on a second. Hi there. Bret all right, mike. Im going to come back to you. The key issues here as we get Governor Youngkin set up. Sure. Bret we covered obviously his race in virginia. Education was a huge issue. But now you look across the board at all the races you just mentioned. There is a host of issues. There is immigration we talked about earlier. Crime, inflation. It seems like the republicans are in the Poll Position in a a lot of these races but figure out which republican in which race is going to be interesting come primary season. No question about that. Those are big issues in all these key states. Inflation, what are you going to do about it . Its costing us more at the gas station, at the grocery store. They are digging into these issues trying to figure out what resonates with people in their respective states. Bret all right. Thank you. Thats live tv for you. Up now the governor of virginia glenn youngkin. We apologize for the audio issues there, governor. Thanks for joining us. Oh, bret, thank you for having me. I always enjoy being with you. Bret we talk about the key issues as we head toward the midterm. You have one of these races that we all focused on. The economy was huge. But also education in the commonwealth of virginia. As you look at where you sit now, after being in office for the time you have, what do you think is most important . Well, what happened last year was more than a campaign. It really became a movement. And it became a movement led by parents. And in case people hadnt noticed, parents matter. And i think what started in virginia has really spread across the nation. A recognition that parents need to have a role in their childs education and when we had a chance during this first legislative cycle in virginia to pass on a bipartisan basis legislation to empower parents to make decisions with regards to masking for their kids, to have transparency into their curriculum so they could see what the materials looked like and if they were sexually explicit they could remove them from the curriculum, to be engaged fully in their childs education with Higher Standards of education, this is at the forefront of issues in america today. But i dont want to diminish what rising inflation is doing to all americans and virginians. Thats why we are working so hard to cut taxes in virginia. Oh, by the way, Public Safety is on the forefront. We have continued to see Violent Crime escalate. In virginia we are at 20 year high in murder rate. And we are going to work right now to make sure that we can, in fact, combat that and bring crime down by Funding Record increases in compensation. And funding. All kinds of Training Budgets and Equipment Budgets to bring crime down in virginia. Bret i want to ask you about the school issue in just a second. The big concern across the country is the Sticker Shock of inflation at the gas pump. Whats the latest on a Gas Tax Holiday in virginia . Well, i believe that we have a unique opportunity in virginia, we have record surplus in our commonwealth transportation fund. I propose to bring down and eliminate our gas tax for three months. Particularly going into the summer. And that is being debated in our legislature right now. Legislature passes it because its time for virginians to get a break. Bret one of the ideas democrats propose sending 50 bucks to each car owner, hundred dollars to each household. Is that an idea you are considering . No. I believe this is just consistent with just paying people. I believe that we have to bring costs down at the pump by cutting taxes. We can do this. And that will, in fact, draw people into transportation this summer. Getting out. Were coming out of the pandemic. Its time for folks to get out and enjoy being in virginia. Were going to cut taxes and we are going to make sure that people can afford it at the pump. Bret you talked about the school issue. You made headlines recently by offering this amendment to put the entire Loudoun County school board on the ballot in november, a year early. Some of your critics. Bret, i have lost your feed. Bret im so sorry. Im sorry about that but i cant hear you. Bret the question was really good, governor. We appreciate your time. We you have back when we work out these audio issues. Again, live tv. Fox news media analyst of a host of Fox News Media buzz howie kurtz shows you dont. The worlds richest man says he hopes his worst critics remain on twitter now that he is buying it. A stampede of Media Detractors dismiss elon musk Free Speech Vow as a Pretext Turning Twit near a scary plus. Elon musk lives in a world only kind of free speech is white men feeling free. Umhuh. To say whatever the hell they want. If you own all of twitter or facebook, you could secretly ban one partys candidate or all of its candidates. All of its nominees. And senator Elizabeth Warren called Musk Dangerous for our democracy. Conservatives who view twitter as badly biased to the left are generally praising musk. Elon musk does not agree with the rest of the billionaires in the tech business. He thinks everyone should be allowed to talk. But not everyone agrees, including those who are critical of musks Company Tesla doing big business in china. Musk, who loves to bask in publicity can play rough on the social media app. He just poked rival bill gates with a pregnant man emoji and a crude joke. The sec once fined him for improperly tweeting about tesla. He and tesla have efforts to sign Nondisclosure Agreements and reporters to submit their stories in advance. The banning of donald trump by the Silicon Valley giants under scores how facebook, instagram and twitter have all struggled with what content should be allowed. Some journalists say musks more lenient approach it hate speech, bullying and misinformation. Others say thats a fig leaf for more censorship as when twitter banned the Hunter Biden Laptop Story in 2020. Elon musk may not turn out to be a savior but his critics gloss over just how toxic twitter has become in recent years. The reason this matters twitter punches above its weight since journalists may be its most obsessive users. Bret . Bret howie, thanks. We have put the investigation into the hands of a Trump Appointee from the Previous Administration who is the United States attorney for the district of delaware and because we have me as the Attorney General who is committed to the independence of the Justice Department from any influence from the white house in criminal matters. Bret Attorney General Merrick Garland on capitol hill talking about the investigation into hunter biden. How its being handled and that he continues to stay out of it and let the u. S. Attorney in delaware handle it lets start there with our panel. The Washington Post columnist marc thiessen, Charles Hurt Opinion editor for the Washington Times and jeff mason correspondent for reuters. Marc, should there be a Special Prosecutor. It is in the hands of a Trump Appointee, so thats pretty solid political cover for them. Again, if hunter biden did nothing wrong, he has nothing to fear from a Special Counsel. So, if hunter biden did nothing wrong, what would be better than having a Special Counsel make that determination rather than leaving it in the hands of the biden Justice Department with Merrick Garland have the last say. Bret the white house has been asked about this different times different ways. Whats their response . Whats their level of concern about it . They dont really engage on it stance. I think they would also sort of backup what the Attorney General said which is President Biden is not going to weigh in on or take have influence on what his Attorney General does or says. Or what the Justice Department does or says. And thats backed up by some other white house officials who i have talked to who i think are probably frustrated with Merrick Garland on some other issues. Related to january 6th. Et cetera. The word has come down from the top, ie President Biden, i want this Justice Department to be separate. I want to change and have a shift in tone there from how he believes it was run under president trump. Bret are they preparing for the possibility of sixplus months away losing control of the house and senate and having to face an Investigative Committee on both sides . I think they are. I think they absolutely are i think thats a reality that they realize is coming. In fact, i did a story on this a few months ago that the Transition Team before the georgia race set up the White House Counsels Office essentially in the administration in general there in the white house for investigations because they were not assuming that the democrats were going to control the senate. So a lot of those people who were put in place then will be available as it were to take that on if needed. Bret thats a good point. Senator ossoff is one of the reasons why there is a democratic majority. One seat they needed republicans needed. Charlie, last word on this . What do you think . I do think its a problem for the white house. Regardless of, you know, who is handling, you know, the point person whether its a Trump Appointee is kind of amusing to listen to Merrick Garland trump that a tout nominee is handling something in this white house. But, regardless of that, its going to be a political issue and you can guarantee that republicans are going to pound that drum all the way between now and november and then come november, assuming republicans take control of it the house and possibly the senate, its going to get even more interesting. Bret New York Times opinion on twitter under elon musk will be a scary place. Mr. Musk is correct that twitter has become a de facto Public Square consider the fate of another Public Square billionaire real check on its power. Facebook knows algorithms are deeply flawed because mr. Zuckerberg holds a votes on the share internal pressure on the company to change how they are designed deployed has proved futile. Facebook has done outreach to different people to say hey we are dealing with this in different ways. Are you surprised by the reaction to the elon musk thing . The liberal freakout over this is so revealing. Basically elon musk, first of all, elon musk is not a conservative. I interviewed him at the ei world forum. Sending people to marchs and smoking weed and building electric cars. All he has said is two things i believe in free speech and i want us to have transparency. Put the algorithm out there so people can see how decisions are getting made. The fact that theyre against this against transparency and for displerp i truly it doesnt make sense. Last reason for the freakout is because twitter is their playground. One thing about the left is the left is authoritarian. They like to be in control. And so thats why they lockdowns went on so long because they like to be in control of our lives and they like to be in control of their playground and he is taking it away from them. I want to get to these races. I ask each of to you choose a midterm race. Jeff, let me start with you, what did you choose. I picked arizona and Senator Kelly who is raising a lot of money and has a war chest thats a lot bigger than any of his potential republican opponents but that said, arizona is a state that is potentially up for grabs. At a time when democrats around the country in these midterm elections are under threat. So, we will see who is his opponent ends up being, as i said, he is financially in good shape, but it could be auto tough race for him. Bret here is mark kelly on title 42. Title 42 is put in place because of a Public Health emergency, and it doesnt it it shouldnt be around forever. But right now, this administration does not have a plan. To be honest its going to be a crisis on top of a crisis. Bret thats, charlie, a common quote from jon ossoff to mark kelly to others. Yeah. And to listen to the Biden Administration suddenly started talking about the importance of the exact Legal Definition of title 42 and thats why they need to repeal it is kind of absurd when you look at the border and you realize that the law has not been important to the Biden Administration at all in terms of enforcing the laws on the books regarding immigration. Its kind of odd that they cherry picked this particular thing to be strict constitutionalist. Bret whats your race. I picked the georgia governors race. It is going to be the primary is going to be epic and the general is going to be epic. Bret there is the primary Current Governor brian kemp against david perdue senator. The a. P. Poll is lopsided. David perdue is the former president s endorsement. Important thing here is Election Integrity is the most important thing that we can have. The problem is that thats not what wins elections important issues that trump and trump alone brought to the forefront of not only our politics but also the Republican Party and thats how, you know, thats how you end up winning elections. Its, you know, Election Integrity is vital but you have got to be talking about bigger issues to win elections. Bret marc, whats your race. Ron desantis . Florida another bad race. Trump won the race 3 . Is he ahead by 9. 21 points in the University Of Florida poll if you believe that he has a 54 approval. 38 disapproval. Inverse of biden e is showing what trumpism without trump can be. He liked trump e is Counter Puncher without the baggage. Counter punched on Lockdown Establishment and punched back teachers unions and disney. His message is i can win in florida and i can give you everything you like about trump without the baggage. Bret do you think we will see in primary season the power or the weight of the former president s endorsement . Absolutely. The question would be is that weight does it show that he has still got it or does it show the opposite. Bret guys, thanks. In studio, again. Thank you. Bret tuesday tweets. Ben asks we apologize to the governor of virginia. We welcome him back about the audio issues. We have Secretary Of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on tomorrow. We keep doing it inviting all kinds of folks on Special Report. Fair and balanced. Patrick wants to know do you have any personal memory of the late senator orrin hatch . I do he was a big Special Report watcher e always came up to me and said loved the show. So he just had a great personality you engaged with him. Beth asked do you enjoy the toss from the the five over to your show or is it sometimes a little bit awkward you always handle it notably. Sometimes its a little awkward but hello, greg. Thats a good one. Thanks for inviting us into your home tonight. Thats it for this Special Report, fair, balanced and unafraid. I do enjoy the tossovers though especially this one Jesse Watters primetime is now. Jesse i have never noticed an awkward toss. [ laughter ] thanks, bret. Bret see you, buddy. Many. Jesse after years of censorship, the pendulum has swung back. One of the lefts most prominent pillars of control has come crashing down. And now libs are in a full blown panic. I dont think anyone disagrees it should be a free and open debate or a platform but i mean should it be necessarily a fawnt for misinformation or to, you know,
