drowning. the search for 22-year-old bishop evans is now in its third day. we're also following the latest on elon musk's proposal to buy twitter. "the wall street journal" reports twitter now are re-examining musk's $43 billion offer to purchase the company. more on that with fox news contributor joe concha later this hour. but first tonight, an adviser to ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy says secretary of state antony blinken and defense secretary lloyd austin are currently meeting with zelenskyy in ukraine's capital of kyiv. zelenskyy announced plans for that meeting at a press conference last night. the united states has not confirmed the sit-down. trey yingst is live in kyiv with the latest on what we mow there. trey. >> reporter: jon, good evening. i should reiterate we cannot independently confirm that this meeting is taking place, but according to an adviser to ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy, a meeting is taking place between two top-level u.s. officials, secretary austin and secretary blinken, and the leader of ukraine. now, it comes amid the two month anniversary of the russian invasion into this country and also as the civilian death toll here continues to rise. overnight at least 8 people were killed in the southern port city of odesa when russian missiles slammed into a residential block. a mother and her three-month-old baby are among the dead, a stark reminder of the innocent people stuck amid this war. further east in mariupol, russian troops are reportedly trying to storm a steel plant where more than a thousand ukrainian soldiers and civilians are trapped underground. ukraine's deputy prime minister calling on the united nations to demand a ceasefire in mariupol in order to create new humanitarian evacuation routes. this after a corridor out of the port city collapsed earlier today. >> translator: if our people will be killed in mariupol, if there will be a referendum -- [inaudible] ukraine will leave any negotiating process. >> reporter: intense fighting continues along front lines in the eastern part of this country. tank battles and artillery fire are reported. this comes as the ukrainian capital of kyiv does remain under fire. today we heard air raid sirens throughout the city as kyiv and other places across ukraine brace for further fighting. jon. jon: obviously, the ukrainian president wants the american delegation to know the situation on the ground, and and he's going to be pushing hem for military aid -- them for military aid. but as you say, we can't confirm that the meeting is underway, right, trey? >> reporter: exactly. it took the american and ukrainian press corps by shock really when it was announced yesterday during a press conference by ukrainian volodymyr zelenskyy. he was holding that meeting9 with the press underground in a a subway station because there are very few places where he can actually be seen in public. there are real threats against the life of president zelenskyy. but he is expected in any potential meeting with u.s. officials to ask for more heavy weapons. this comes after that $800 million package that includes 72 artillery units that are much needed by the ukrainian military to push back this new russian offensive in the eastern donbas renal are. jon? jon: and give us an explanation as to why they're keeping this meeting under wraps. i mean, e zelenskyy's office has talked about it, but the united states government will not potentially confirm it. why? >> reporter: i think it has to do with massive security concerns on the ground. we've seen other officials from europe come to kyiv and meet with president zelenskyy and even top-level diplomats explain publicly they are bringing their officials back to the ukrainian capital. but with so many unpredictable actions taken by russian president vladimir putin and the russian military, there's a real sense on the ground that u.s. officials and other top officials and diplomats simply cannot take any extra security risks right now amid this war. jon: makes sense. trey yingst live in kyiv, ukraine. trey, thank you. . now, the latest on on the border crisis and tragedy at our southern border. agents now presume that 22-year-old texas national guard soldier bishop e. evans is dead. evans went missing after he heroically tried to rescue two migrants who i appeared to be drowning in the rio grande. this comes as the lifting of trump era rules next month is expected to cause a massive surgery of illegal immigration. bill -- surge of illegal immigration. bill me rue gin has the story for us on the border. >> reporter: good evening to you. we're getting a first look after some photos of this missing soldier. if we can pull those up right now, these photos courtesy of his family. this is 22-year-old specialist bishop evans out of arlington, texas. and tragically, he is presumed to have drowned after he jumped into the rio grande here in eagle pass early friday morning in an attempt to save the lives of illegal immigrants he saw struggling in the water. he never resurfaced, and his body still has not been found. as you mentioned, texas rangers later determining those two with illegal immigrants were actually drug smugglers who were involved in this incident. you take a look at this video we shot earlier today, this is an expanded area of the search operation closer to where we are down river. and the state of texas as well as federal resources with border patrol have been surging -- searching nonstop for this soldier, till unable to find his body. so far the only thing they have found is his body armor, a walk walkie-talkie and his cell phone near the river bank where he jumped in. they've had to call out the dive teams multiple times because the current, have just been so strong. the soldier's family has been notified, and it is being handled as a presumed drowning. but in the meantime, the illegal crossings here in eagle pass are similarfully -- simply nonstop. take a look. in eagle pass, texas, it's a scene that plays out every morning. just after sunrise migrants make their move, wading across the rio grande, entering the u.s. illegally. and they continue to come from all around the world. they come in historic numbers. cbp in march alone reporting more than 221,000 migrant encounters. that's the highest number in more than two decades. the river can be deadly. fox news this week witnessed the bodies of multiple drowned migrants being pulled from the water. on the international bridge in eagle pass at the end of -- as the end of title 42 looms, groups of migrants are expelled back to mexico every 30 minutes. across the rio grande in the mexican city, groups of migrants are waiting. [speaking spanish] >> translator: my hope is for now that i get granted permission to cross with my son on the 23rd. >> reporter: in the rio grande valley sector, agents found this 2-year-old boy abandoned near roman, texas. there have been a staggering 38,000 of these unaccompanied children found in that sector since october. and, jon, tomorrow house minority leader kevin mccarthy is going to be bringing a delegation of republicans down here to the border, actually right here to eagle pass where we are standing where they will be meeting with border patrol and texas dps as both agencies prepare for title 490 to develot month. and later this week, dhs secretary mayorkas will be testifying before the house committee. jon: the numbers at the border have been staggering already this year. if the increase comes as expected, they're talking about, what, triple the numbers? >> reporter: yeah. it would be nearly a tripling of the current conditions right now. right now nationwide they're averaging about 7,000 illegal crossings a day which they're already overwhelmed with. the worst dhs projection is showing potentially upwards of 18,000 a day. so that, as you said, is nearly a tripling of the current situation which is already catastrophic in itself, jon. jon: bill melugin doing a great job reporting from the border there. thanks, bill. >> reporter: thanks. jon: well, a growing number of democrat lawmakers are joining republicans in opposing the biden administration's plan to lift title 42 pandemic restrictions at the southern border. they fear that dropping that trump era policy as planned next month will mean yet another massive migrant surge. alexandria hoff is live at the white house with the latest. alex. >> reporter: well, jon, there are practical and political concerns here. democrats who are in tight races right now, they don't want to be hurt by the president's immigration policy. still, the biden administration is standing by their decision to end title 42 a month from now. currently, 47 democratic members of congress are pushing to extend the public health measure put in place urning president trump. under president trump. on "fox fox news sunday," democratic congressman henry cuellar asked this: >> how can we have the emergency, federal public if emergency extended to july and say there's a pandemic going op in the united states, but at the border everything's fine and just let people into the united states? >> reporter: and it's not just a few people, as you've mentioned. texas congressman michael mccaul foresees half a million additional migrants crossing in border in the weeks following the end date. he also touched on homeland security alejandro mayorkas. >> i don't want to divulge too much of that, but he's very frustrating. >> reporter: senator elizabeth warren is among the democrats who supported policies, and she said this earlier today. >> title 42 is not consistent with our values, and it doesn't keep us safer. >> reporter: to complicate things, on tuesday the supreme court will hear arguments over the trump era remain in mexico policy. despite president biden's effort to repeal it, lower courts have kept it in place at least in theory. texas governor greg abbott weighed in on "sunday morning futures." >> surely, the supreme court will rule in our favor hopefully. but no one is holding biden accountable for his reckless decision to ignore all of these policies that previously had led to the lowest number of illegal crossings in decades. >> reporter: in the supreme court case, texas will argue that by lifting remain in mexico that tens of thousands of additional migrants currently awaiting court hearings across the border will then be released into the united states. jon? jon: more on this coming up. alexandria hoff live at the white house, thank you. well, minnesota republican congressman tom emmer joins us now. he chairs the national republican congressional committee and is a member of the house financial services committee as well. give us some of your feelings on the situation at the border, congressman. >> well, it's a mess, jon. and thanks for having me. actually listening to the prior reports and especially the reporter that preceded me joining you, the comment that democrats are now separating themselves in opposing, and i think the report was there are 42 congressional democrats now that are against ending title 42. jon, it's laughable. they have done nothing for over 15 months. this has been a crisis since president biden took office. they stopped paying attention to the border, and now they act like title 42 is somehow the magical tool? sure, it gives us the ability to send people back immediately, but i think haven't been -- they haven't been protecting the border. look, what they need to do is they need to have actions. not just their words with. they immediate to finish the wall. they -- need to finish wall, hay need to talk about instead of voting for mass amnesty which they already have, instead of continuing catch and release which is what they want to do, they've got to end catch and release. heavy got to talk about enforcing the law and literally they've got to finish the trump era policies of making sure our border is safe and secure. >> let me put up on the south korean the -- screen the names of some of the democrats who now say they are in favor of holding off, delaying the dropping of those title 42 covid era health restrictions. those are expected, the dropping of title 42 is expected to release that blood of incoming engrams -- flood of incoming immigrants, and here are a number of them who don't want to see that happen. kyrsten sinema and mark kelly, ironically, both arizona senators who are democrats who are --well,s mark kelly is up for re-election. and the suggestion is he's going to have a tough time keeping his seat or could. and then there's governor of texas. here's what greg abbott had to say on the impact of the president ending title 42. listen. >> with the lifting of title 42, about 18,000 people coming across the border per day. do the math on that, you find it means that more than 6 million people will be coming across the border a year. and about half of those would be in the state of texas. we would have coming across the border in one year more people than residents of our largest city in texas, which is houston. we would be adding more than one houston a year. there's no way the state of texas can assimilate those people. jon: there's no way the state of texas can assimilate them, what about the entire nation, congressman? >> it's going to be unprecedented. but we've got to keep in mind, jon, we already have a crisis at the border. a crisis that was created 15 months ago by president biden and these democrats who do not want to follow through on protecting our border and actually having policies that work. and, by the way, supporting our border patrol agents so we don't have tragedies like we had on friday. you talked about mark kelly up for re-election in arizona. he only recently said he hasn't supported title 42, but he's never said anything about enforcing the existing laws and making sure our border is a strong border that protects the american public, our property and our lives. by the way, tom o'halloran, a congressman up for re-election, recently said he objects to ending title 42 but, again, not critical of the biden administration's failure to do anything on the border since they took office. you have a crisis already, jon, that is going to become a super crisis. it's just going to get worse. and this administration and the democrats in congress have no answer for it except to complain that it's all about title 42, which is pretty hollow after 15 months of not enforcing our border laws. jon: as you say, mark kelly, democrat senator from arizona, seems to have recently found religion regarding title 42. here's what the new york times had to say about the mood in the democrat party. it's time to head for the lifeboats. democrats' fatalism intensifies, it says, and the quote goes on to read: some democratic politicians have begun creating distance between themselves and the president. senate candidates are stampeding the brake with the immigration -- administration's immigration policies, for instance. other moves are more subtle such as governor gretchen whit her of michigan. is joe biden something of an anchor around democrats' necks as they try to get reelect in november? >> absolutely. but if he's an anchor, they're the weights that that anchor is attached to. again, like you say about mark kelly, he recently found religion? like you say about this new york times report that democrats are trying to distance themselves from the immigration policies, pretty tough to do that when you don't have any solutions, when you're not willing to offer solutions like end catch and release, enforce the existing laws, jon. look, they do not if have -- do not have a solution for the american people. they're responsible for double-digit inflation. their defund the police nonsense is responsible for the crime wave across this country, and they are responsible for the crisis that we are experiencing at our border that, by the way, if title 42 is allowed to expire, it's only going to get much worse than it already is. american voters are smart, and they will hold them accountable come next fall, jon. jon: well, and american voters say this president is not very popular with them. he is plumbing the depths of presidential popularity polling. but his chief of staff, ron klain, betweenedded this out. he writes -- tweeted this out. an interesting observation, just fyi, president macron appears to have secured a double-digit victim erie at a time -- victory at a time when his approval rating is 36%. hmm. now, obviously, he's alluding to the fact that his boss' approval rating is at about the same level right now. what do you say to ron klain's analysis? >> well -- [laughter] i think some refer to him as the prime minister, prime minister klain. clearly, again, where's the solution, jon, for double-digit inflation we haven't seen in 40 years? where is the solution to help americans who are struggling to buy groceries and pay for gas at the pump? where's the solution to the crime wave that's taken over in our major cities across this country? where is the understanding and the answer to americans who are saying you have left our southern border completely unprotected, you are allowing people to flood into this country and, by the way, with them they're bringing fentanyl and other problems that are costing us american lives and damage to property. there's no answer. instead, you've got these cute little tweets about look what happened over in france. how about let's take care of what's going on at home, and let's think about what the american people are asking us to take care of, and let's get to work, jon. they're going to end up being held accountable for this next fall, and that's why you'll see a new republican majority in the u.s. house of represent9tives, and i believe you're going to see a republican majority in the senate as well. jon: you are part of the republican leadership team in the house. i want to play this bit of leaked audio from minority leader kevin mccarthy, sort of your boss in a way in the house, what he said about president trump in the days after january 6th. listen. >> i'm seriously thinking of having a conversation with him tonight. i think this will pass, and and it would be my recommendation we should move on. i mean, that would be my take, but i don't think he'll take it. but i don't know. i've had it with this guy. what he did is up acceptable. nobody can defend that and nobody should defend it. jon: he said that he was going to tell the president to resign, but i never had that conversation with him, ultimately. your thoughts. >> jon -- [laughter] why are we talking about this a year and a half after it happened? it is not the issue. americans don't care about this kind of nonsense. this is being generate9 by journalists -- generated by journalists who refuse to report double-digit inflation that is the number one issue for americans today that are trying to feed their families and trying to get back and forth to their jobs. they're not talking about the crime issue that is a direct result of the democrat party's defund the police, ridiculous policies. they're not talking about the border, they're not talking about the things that americans care about. and, frankly, as the chair of the republicans' campaign operation in the house, our job is to stay focused on the issues that matter to americans most, and that's where i think we should be. jon: okay. congressman, it's been a good conversation. thanks very much for coming on. we'll see you again soon. >> thank you, jon. jon: up next, twitter had been expected to decline elon musk's takeover bid, knew we're hearing the tech -- now we're hearing the tech gianting is giving his offer another look. zero overdraft fees when he overdraws his account by fifty bucks or less. overdraft assist from chase. make more of what's yours. ♪("i've been everywhere" by johnny cash) ♪ ♪i've traveled every road in this here land!♪ ♪i've been everywhere, man.♪ ♪i've been everywhere, man.♪ ♪of travel i've had my share, man.♪ ♪i've been everywhere.♪ ♪♪ ighting for one goal, this one ♪i've been everywhere.♪ mission, life. i get to keep her. we get to have her and enjoy her. and she gets to grow up, which is the best gift anyone could ever give. jon: the state of florida has decided to revoke the disney company's self-governing status over the company's opposition to the state's new sexual education bill. the special status gave disney the authorities of a county government on its property. the company held that status since 1967. joe concha joins now us now, media and politics columnist for "the hill" and a fox news contributor as well. give us your take, disney has lost something that was most like likely quite precious to it, joe, or at least it will in 2023 if this decision goes forward. >> yeah. not just that, jon, but escapism, right? if i even speak to -- i live in jersey, so i can find plenty of parents that vote democratic. hay don't like the fact that disney is taking a side here, that they have become activists now at this point, and they just want the escapism back, that's all. they don't want to have to hear about this stuff or them taking a stand. the bottom line is that the media keeps calling this law in florida don't say gay. it is a law that does not have the word gay in the bill any way, shape or form. yet we keep hearing it described that way over and over and, again, as a parent of young kids, we don't want to have to hear about parents -- as parents we don't want to have to hear about teachers keaching -- teaching our kids about sex, sexual orientation or gender identity at that age. disney is saying, nope, we support this, and now their business is going to get hurt in many ways just like we saw in georgia, by the way, with coca-cola and delta. they took a side over so-called voting rights in that state, a state where it's the easier to vote in georgia than it is in new york or delaware. so maybe these corporations should concentrate on making good products and providing good customer service and running solid companies and creating great cultures and jobs and a work-friendly culture and environment instead of getting political, because every time they do, you're guaranteed to alienate at least half of your potential customers, jon. jon: jerry demings is the mayor of orange county where disney world is. listen to his criticism of this move by the florida legislature. >> okay. >> do we have to take over the first response to public safety components for reedy creek with no new revenue? so why should they be exempt when other companies have to do the same? it's a very logical argument, quite frankly. jon: all right. so the twitter company might now be warming up to the bid that elon musk says he's offering for shares of twitter. this fight has generated front page headlines, it's generated all kinds of criticism from outlets like "the washington post." give us your take as a media critic on what's going on here. >> i just want to know, you know, as a critic, i want to ask a question, and that is why is everyone so threatened by elon musk? i mean, who could possibly, jon, defend the way twitter has conducted itself in recent years as far as censorship, as far as oppression, as far as activism as a political organization? we saw with the hunter biden laptop story, we saw when they would literally eliminate accounts, lock out accounts if you just shared a story if covid came from a lab which now is probably more of a consensus than anything else? and, look, twitter has to take another look at this offer from musk because if they reject it, they know there's a massive lawsuit coming because they didn't uphold to their fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders. it's hard to see how musk doesn't win here when you consider that he has the money and he has the right argument. he's a free speech salutist, anr has shown it just values speech that comes from a certain ideology, and that's not a way to run a company like that. jon: yeah. musk gave an appearance ated talk and gave his thoughts on his efforts to acquire twitter. listen to elon musk. >> it's important to the function of democracy, it's important to the function of the united states as a free country and actually to help freedom in the world more broadly than the u.s., twitter as a public platform x. so i do think this will be somewhat painful, and i'm not sure that i i will actually be able to acquire itful. jon: the world's richest man not sure he'll be able to acquire it, but he sure is giving it the old college try, joe.
