now, the polarizing media environment means pro-trump people will feel offended by the attacks, pro-biden feeling the harsh words were justified. i'm trying, as always, to stick to the facts, but i get the deep level of distrust. none of this moves the ball or helps solve a single problem facing the country starting with covid. it's just more finger pointing that some folks may well be tuning out. january 6th remains a double tragedy. the violence two blocks from here, a year ago and the toxic politics that have led to a more divided america. i'm howard kurtz, and this is "mediabuzz." ♪ ♪ howard: ahead, brian kilmeade joins us on the media coverage of this emotional week. the 46th president devoted much of his speech in the capitol rotunda to denouncing the 45th prime minister. >> we didn't see a -- 45th president. >> we didn't see a former president who had just rallied the mob to attack sitting in a private dining room off the oval office in the white house watching it all on television. and doing nothing. for hours. a former president of the united states of america has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. howard: trump hit back with tough statements calling biden a failure. the complicit media calls it the big lie when in actuality, he says, the big lie was the election itself. the democrats want to own january 6th so they can sow fears and divide america. i say let them have it because america sees through their lies and polarization. and the pun pundits are also using strong language. >> all of this may be a turning point for president joe biden. his speech today was the most direct and powerful since he took the oath of office. >> this was the theater of the politically absurd. none of these democrats really believe our government faces an ongoing threat from maga mobs. >> if you think that speech was partisan, then you believe the former president's lies. it's only a partisan speech if you think there's somehow a truthful dispute here. >> what he did was he scolded millions of americans for what he believes something very bad that they can did. he's presuming their guilt. he's assuming their guilty. that's not what a president should do. >> the gaslighting from the democrats, the mob in the media, is reaching record levels. fake hysteria, crocodile that tears. analogies to 9/11, pearl harbor and even the holocaust complete with a special performance from cast of "hamilton." >> the former president responded with his usual desperate pleas for attention. we're not going to give him any air time tonight. howard: joining us now to analyze, ben.com domenech -- ben domenech and julie banderas. ben, what's your take on the media cover only on the first anniversary of that tragedy and president biden's speech many particular? >> well, i'm glad that you used that chuck todd clip, because it was something i was going to bring up describing your reaction to that speech as being partisan is itself in some way an indication that you've bought into everything that donald trump says about the election or something along those lines. that's absurd. that speech was partisan. it was very clearly partisan. it was just as partisan as don lemon or joy reid or chuck todd is or anybody on these other networks who espouses these views. and i think it's very unfortunate and a mistake politically on the part of the president to go down this road. we we saw what happened in virginia in november when you had this lean in for the previous month, essentially, from democratic candidates trying to wrap january 6th and everything that happened on that day around all these different republicans. it didn't work then, and i don't think it's going to work now. and i think that the media that's carrying water for this speech suggesting that it was something that was appropriate given the context of this, you know, the is just completely off the ball. i think the average american, democrat and republican, can say that what happened on january 6th was very bad, that it was something that was embarrassing, that we ought to look into it, we ought to make sure it never happens again. they also have the ability to say this was not 9/11, this was not pearl harbor. we do not remember this in the same context as those terrible days. it's disrespectful to do so. and the fact that kamala harris did that and that joe biden seemed to lean into with it as well, i think, was reprehensible and a huge political mistake. howard: julie, why do you think president trump canceled his press conference? absolutely not. that is where the mainstream media has gone wrong for exactly one year. every single night when you turn on msnbc or cnn, all you see is them talking about january 6th. we realize the insurrection was an absolute disaster, we realize that the extremist followers of president trump's who then just got voted out of office obviously took it too far. could the president have said more to stop them? >> well, i think one aspect of this is just total incuriosity about what we do know about election fraud or stories that are within that area. there is a rush on the part of the media to dismiss any stories along those lines and essentially acting as if they don't matter because they don't want it to reflect some broader belief that the result of the election, the outcome of the election would have been changed. on the flip side of that though, transparency is something we should all welcome. transparency both when it comes to our elections and also when it comes to january 6th. the fact that this commission that nancy pelosi formed has focused a lot more, it seems to me, on going after republicans and even members of the media, members of this network, as opposed to focusing on the real questions that i think are very important about the security precautions that happened that day, the fact that we're, you know, standing here today and the inspector general of the capitol police, according to them only 30 out of more than 100 recommendations that they made about changes to the security policy in the capitol have even been taken up or advanced in any way. they're serious questions about what went wrong, and i think we deserve to know the answer. howard: since you point out the committee controlled by democrats, that committee has asked for voluntary cooperation from seine hannity and -- sean hannity and released a new text, i'm very worried about the next 48 hours. hannity's lawyer, jay sekulow, says the requests were serious constitutional issues including first amendment concerns. but the broader question is, and i think you started to touch on it, if i canned get you to wrap up the point, by going after trump, mark meadows, people at fox, why is it -- do you think the media ever suggests the possibility that some of the actions by this panel might be partisan? permanently banned marjorie taylor or green after her fifth violation. the republican congresswoman tweeted there are extremely high amounts of covid advantage a seen deaths. actually, serious adverse reactions are rare. now, donald trump called the move a disgrace to democracy, and marjorie taylor green said she called upon her fellow republicans to abandon twitter. >> but when a private company that is not elected by anyone in this country declares war on a sitting member of congress and a sitting president who happens to be both from the republican party, it's up to our leadership and it's up to our conference to do something about it. howard: joining us now from dallas, steve krakauer who watches the newsletter on the media. steve, in marjorie taylor green's criticism -- facebook suspended her for 24 hours over the same post -- she says almost nothing about her disparagement on vaccines is unsafe. don't social media sites also have a responsibility to keep vaccine misinformation off of their platforms? >> i'm not sure about that. i think that social media platforms should be platforms for speech and, you know, i'm someone who believes most speech should be allowed on a lot of these platforms. now, marjorie taylor green mentioned they are private companies, so they have the right to take her off. but it absolutely applies to the beta the rules on these platforms are enforced. you talk about misinformation, disinformation, what was happening at the supreme court on friday with sonia sotomayor talking about how many children are hospitalized could count as covid misinformation. i think what it comes down to is there's a clear bias here for certain kinds of speech when it comes to how these social media companies apply their rules. now, a lot of conservatives have large platforms, but when it comes to what they can kick them off for, it absolutely is biased in one direction. howard: i agree with your larger point. on the other hand, congresswoman green kept doing this, for example, in office she tweeted that the vaccines are failing, which they're not, and maybe a better solution is just to flag it it and say there's a dispute about it. she still, by the way, has her congressional twitter account. it has left-leaning companies so undermining their reputation for fairness that when they do take action that some would say is justified, it's written off by the right as pure politics. >> it is. and i think that, absolutely, i would agree with you that marjorie taylor green has spread misinformation about a variety of things on social media platforms. the question is what do we do about it. and i think there's two respects here. first -- two elements here. when they banned marjorie taylor groan, that ends up people leading to say, well, why, and starting to dig in more. when you can hide it from the public, it becomes even more intriguing to a certain group of people. it would be better to call it out and to leave it out there. the second thing that i think is really important is we are seeing right now -- think of the journalists. you would think they would have an interest in shining a light on everything, even digging in and maybe having some curiosity about other things. but instead we're seeing this rise of anti-speech activism in newsrooms in new york and d.c. they're cheerleading this sort of remember sorship, and i thin. what's going to happen? if we start regulating these private social media companies, we're going to -- it's becoming a slippery slope. you put another -- howard:
