>> let me just conclude by saying that either we are going to come together as americans, which i hope and pray we do, to defend our democracy, and look back on january 6th as a painful low point in our nations history. or we can turn over power to a mob that is willing to do anything and say anything to dismantle our democracy and destroy this grand experiment called america. the january 6th insurrection tried to overthrow our capital, and their sidekicks in suits and ties are trying to overthrow our elections. just as we shored up our security here to protect the people's house, we need to upgrade our election laws to protect people's freedom to vote. today is a day to remember, to be grateful, for all of those who risked and lost their lives to protect us. to be grateful for all of those who stood up for our democracy, and continue to stand up every single day. today is a day to be grateful that we live in this great democracy called america, and it is a day to recommit ourselves to protect our freedoms for our children and our grandchildren. thank you, mr. president. i yield the floor. >> mr. president. to speak of the senator from nevada. >> thank you, mr. president. you know, this morning i have been listening to my colleagues, watching the news, watching our president, reflecting on -- >> harris: we are watching what's happening play out on capitol hill, and what we are told is that right at the top of the hour they would hold a moment of silence. we were then going to hear from speaker nancy pelosi. we will continue to watch this. obviously we are now seeing multiple senators come up and talk about that day, january 6th, a year ago. there has been so much political fire thrown onto the grill of conversation, if you will, going into today. i want to bring and bring in aishah hasnie live on capitol hill. aishah, you are with me last hour for "the faulkner focus." we are starting to see what we had anticipated. it is so much less about what happened that america saw was painful, much like all of the rioting leasing in this country for the last two years, and more of the politics of it. >> it's interesting, harris -- good afternoon -- is as you're watching both floors, the house and the senate, we expect that moment of silence happening for it on the house side you watch -- on the senate side you'll see a lot more democrats come to the floor. that's because you just won't see any g.o.p. leadership at any of these events today. that is because republicans believe democrats are trying to politicize today's events. back to you, harris. >> harris: aishah, i want to make the point that the house and senate were supposed to take that moment of silence simultaneously. that didn't happen. since that didn't happen, we are now waiting for that. let's tap back in to see what the speaker is saying at this point. >> addressed the chamber. today, one year ago, the capitol on those who work within it were targeted and violent insurrection that sought to undermine democracy. as we acknowledge the horror of that day, we honor the heroism of so many, particularly u.s. capitol police, institutional staff, for leadership, committee and member staff. we had a session this morning where we could say thank you to many of them. unfortunately, covid did not enable us to have the full house and we will have it another time when the attending physician allows. as we acknowledge the horror of that day, in the face of extreme danger, they all risked their safety for our democracy by protecting the capitol complex, members, staff, press, et cetera, safeguarding the ballots in those mahogany boxes to validate the election, and ensuring that congress could accomplish our purpose and honor our duty to the constitution and to our country. that day and the days after, they were the defenders of our democracy, and their courage and patriotism remain an inspiration. because of them, congress was able to defeat the insurrection, to return to the capitol that same night to ensure that the peaceful transfer of power took place. because of them, and are members, the insurrection failed. one year later, the sacred space where members legislate, children learn, visitors are welcomed, was defiled and damaged. we know that. as we reflect on the darkest day, we remember the insurrection sought not only to attack the building but to enter my democracy itself. when the violent assault was made on the capitol, its purpose was to thwart congress' constitutional duty to validate the electoral count and ensure the peaceful transfer of power. the assault did not deter us from our duty, i will say again, and this capitol assembled a democracy to the world that evening because of the courage of all of you. we rose to honor our oath and protect our democracy. we did so honoring the words of president lincoln during the civil war. fellow citizens, he said, we cannot escape history. we will be remembered in spite of ourselves. no personal significance or insignificance can spare us one or another. we hold the power, therefore we bear the responsibility, lincoln said. today we accept responsibility as daunting and demanding as any previous generations of leadership. since the january 6th, there have been completed assault on our democracy undermining the sanctity of the vote in the integrity of our elections which are the basis of a democracy. let us feature to the vision of our founders who brilliantly established our democracy and made it a model for the world. let us honor the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform and protect that freedom with their lives, and let us remember the words of another president, our patriarch, president george washington. when he delivered the constitution to the congress, he said this. he said, this constitution represents the creation of a government to allow for the continuation of rigorous debate, but relies upon the common sense and good faith of the american people to find the better angels of our nature. as we proceed, let us find our common ground, with liberty and justice for all, remembering the words of our great patriarch. and in the spirit that our chaplain referenced, charity toward all. let us acknowledge today, as i conclude, our fallen heroes of that day. u.s. capitol police officer ran significant, jeffrey smith, billy evans of the leader assault. now i ask all members to rise for a moment of silence in their memory. thank you. pursuant to resolution 188, the house stands adjourned until 6:30 p.m. on monday, january 10th. >> harris: speaker of the house nancy pelosi just holding that moment of silence. as i said before, the senate and the house were supposed to hold them simultaneously. we don't know if that was some sort of mistake or just a change in programming or what, but on the senate side, sentiment, senator schumer had just spoken, and on the side she had not quite arrived at it. when went, the other went, and now it is done. when you later, january 6th, she recognized the police officers only. at the fifth person he was also killed that day. we will move on and be right back after this
