look at what we can expect in 2022, midterm elections are coming, there are economic challenges at home. the world stage is always fluid and unpredictable. president biden beginning his second year in office, i can not think of anyone better to help us usher in the new year and reflect on what we've learned in the old one than martha. the host of the story. one of my favorite people in the world, her favorite college football team has a new head coach. she may want to talk about this too, happy new year, martha. martha. martha. >> trey happy new year. trey: is there anything in 2021 that caught your attention because you think it received too much coverage or under played a little bit? >> the thing under played we spend so much time covering politics. and the back and forth over numbers, i think about build back better bill and it is always a battle over the number. and not enough of a battle about what is best for the american people, what is fundamentals of underlying bill are. it is a transformative bill, that is the opinion of president biden who said it would transform the u.s. economy. we don't have enough discussion about what that means and what kind of country we want to be. do we want to expand the entitlement economy? what are the patterns that we've seen that have evolved in terms of family cohesion and employment and education levels. you have to ask yourself with the under pinning, instead of the knee-jerk reaction that is if you are not for this or that you don't care about people, we don't talk about enough about what is going on you were the bill. so much gets focused on people getting reelected. they want to be able to say i got you and i got you, that regardless whether or not it is the best thing for the country. trey: great point. senate is 50/50, there is a guy named joe manchin from a state where joe biden did did not win a single county, how realistic were the particulars of -- in this case folks on the left. right misplaced expectations also. but in this case the progressives, this was never going to be a progressive sandy store -- candy store in a 50/50 senate, was it. >> you made a break point, they should have always looked at joe manchin and kyrsten sinema. they should have seen it coming, i think there was a heavy period in the initial parts of this presidency, a strong push from the progressives to angle and frame this presidency in to something that maybe of never sellable with the american people, you have is a situation where i think that president looks at this new year and says what am i doing wrong? my poll numbers are terrible. people don't have trust me or have support or confident in me when it comes to the economy and law enforcement. pretty much in all measures he is pretty much underwater except for covid. i look for reevaluation at-this-point, i think he would be out of step and out of touch over this period as we look to the new year to not look at his staff, at the west wing, at the people who advice him say -- advise him and say, look, what is going on? does he need to get back to the person he presented himself as, when he ran for president. trey: they are all fantastic points. when you blame the referee, i saw reporting they are unhappy with the coverage, when you blame the referee, you don't have were else to talk about. i'm not going to ask you if made any resolutions, i think you are almost perfect. and probably did not have to. if i am wrong you can tell he off year what you want to do better in 2022. >> thank you, trey. >> happy new year. trey: still ahead. what will the world statement look like in -- world stage look like in the new year? are there new threats lurking in the shadows? general jack keane shines a light next (swords clashing) -had enough? -no... arthritis. here. aspercreme arthritis. full prescription-strength? reduces inflammation? thank the gods. don't thank them too soon. kick pain in the aspercreme. trey: as we reflect on last year and prepare for a new one. the world's stage continues to be challenging and fraught with potential peril. there is tension between u.s. and russia and u.s. and china, and china and russia appear to be teaming up together. middle east remains uncertain as iran continues to pursue a nuclear weapon, manage that israel said it will not allow. afghanistan dominating the news over the summer with feckless withdrawal, the killing of american service members and a terrorist attack and a drone attack that killed innocent afghan children, because we don't hear much about afghanistan does not mean things are getting better, if you are a woman or a religious minority, afghanistan remains a dangerous place. and what about isis and isis-k? there are other regions of the world that still provide challenges for u.s., like central america and africa and ethiopia people are starving to death, as we prepare for the new year, let's see where the challenges and conflicts will be, what it means for you and for us. as a country, joining us now, retired 4-star general, general jack keane, happy new year, thank you for joining us. tell us what we should be watching as it relates to russia and the new year? >> happy new year to you and our grade oddient -- great audience. china and russia are or great threats for sure. they want to return as much of the former soviet union, eastern states to their sphere of influence as they can, many of those states are already in nato, but they do undermine those states in particular poland and hungary and the baltics, those not align with nato, they will continue to putin flewence on them -- putin influence on them. we have seen it with belarus, dramatically in 2021. ukraine. this is going to continue. putin sees it as an opportunity, i am convinced that the reason why he moved the 110,000 troops into ukraine in the fall of 2021, after he moved about 90 thousand in the spring. was because of one similar event, the debacle that took place in afghanistan, in my mind he saw as weakness. and opportunity, he will continue this level of the aggression, i also believe his cyber activity will likely pick up. he used criminal activity, certainly authorized 'and sponsored by russian government to do that, that include his own cyber activity that government uses, that will likely continue and maybe step up a little bit and be more aggressive. yeah, russia will continue. you mentioned something we watching closely in foreign policy, that is relationship of china and russia getting closer together. and they have stark differences for years, when they are about is under mining the united states global leadership with like minded democracies to maintain the international order that has been in place since post world war ii, they want to create their own sphere of influints, they come together, they recognize they have a common objective in a sense they want to undermine the u.s. and these democracies. i think there will be more activity with them indicating not just a political coming together but military exercises will likely get stepped up. of course, concern that pentagon has, i was over in the pentagon yesterday, they are concerned that we could have actually a conflict activity trey, in the indo-pacific region, over south china sea or over taiwan, russia would see that as a huge opportunity, that would involve just about all of the u.s. military to deal with that, because we are out gunned there possibly they would move into the baltics and break nato and first its collapse. it does not have the wherewithal, given the fact that united states is tied up. now that is a worse case scenario, i'm not saying it will happen, but it on the hospitalization, -- on the horizon, we need to pay attention to. trey: another area of concern, iran, seems they are still bent on nuclear weapon, israel is not going to allow that to happen, what can we expect in the middle east. >> this area gives me concern. i was forecasting would be a problem for us before the biden administration had taken over after the election. i think it is coming to fruition. iran hell-bent on getting that nuclear weapon, no doubt, they will be in pursuit, and step up aggression to get united states out of the middle east, they are out of their eastern border in afghanistan, they welcome, that they are thrilled about, that they want us out of iraq and syria. they will put more pressure to do that. after all they tried to kill the iraqi prime minister. and they tried to kill a couple hundred u.s. soldiers that were at a base there. we got them out before then. how much help will render them will be the president's decision. but this is a dangerous situation. with iran potentially acquiring a nuclear weapon and conflict in the middle east as a result of it. trey: general, it sounds like 2022 is fraught with potential peril, thank you for your service to our country in every way if has manifest itself, we hope and you your family have a great beginning to 2022, thank you for being us. >> thank you, same to you and your audience. trey: education was afternoon american issue for state and political leaders in 2021, and parents, it was front and center in the virginia governor race, senator tim scott joining us next to talk about education and who gets to make those decisions on "sunday night in america." >> woman: what's my safelite story? >> vo: my car is more than four wheels. it's my after-work decompression zone. so when my windshield broke... >> woman: what?! >> vo: ...i searched for someone who really knew my car. i found the experts at safelite autoglass. with their exclusive technology, they fixed my windshield... then recalibrated the camera attached to my glass so my safety systems still work. who knew that was a thing?! >> woman: safelite has service i can trust. >> singers: ♪ safelite repair, safelite replace. ♪ have you checked singlecare? i know the people in my life, think you are pretty close to perfect. but has your mom given you something you need to work on or your staff, what do you want to do better in 2022? >> you know, that is about making continuous improvement. one thing that i have been studying scripture around the issue of discipline. discipline includes doing the right thing at the right time and the right way, you are one of people that challenges me on that, by model you leave for the rest of to us follow. i want to to more homework on how to make america's better place and market that. we should not spend more time on the darker angels, we should be piping hope into every corridor of the country, i need to do a better job of marketing the greatness of this nation. trey: i think you already do a pretty good job, if i mention it is plain -- discipline to you i misspoke, i don't want any more of that for myself in 2022, i hope you have the most incredible beginning happy new year to you, your mom and your family. >> thank you, to you as well, tell terry and mrs. gowdy i said god bless them. trey: amen thank you. >> we enjoy hearing from you at home, e-mail and social media learning what is on your mind each week, tonight. linnyette from michigan. >> any advice on dating in 2022 there with covid going on, we want to be safe. and also finding the right significant other. trey: my advice on dating is don't. i'm kidding. sort of. i'm not an expert, but i share that i met my wife terry, a friend of mine dared me to speak to her at church, i thought she was helen of troy, she was not aware i was alive, this was 40 years ago, life unfolds in mysterious ways, enjoy life, enjoy the mysteries, i think for time prioritize your health, then trust me, when i say sometimes the best things in life come when you least expect them. >> what are you hopeful for in the new year? trey: resurgences of fair less in our political discourse. most of us treat others fairly. in every other aspect of life, most people are good and fair, that is not often reflected this politics, that is my hope politics will be worthy of people it purport to represent. next question judy. >> what is the best pet i could buy. trey: we had cats and dogs growing up, my wife and i have gone toward a dog. we have their, judge. jury and bailiff, my daughter has a dog, my son has a dog, dogs are amazing, i do not believe in reincarnation but if i am wrong, i would like to come back as one of my wife's dogs, they have had really good happy lives, nikki? >> what is the first thing you want to do once the pandemic is over? trey: at this rate, i'm not sure i'll be around. long enough for that to happen, probably stand in line at grocery store without worried about person in front of me sneezing or ride on a plane without a mask that is painful. final question from luanna. >> what the most beautiful place you have visited? trey: that is such a hard question. where the ocean meets mountains in california is beautiful. the marsh in south carolina is beautiful, augusta national is beautiful, to me the most beautiful place in the world is my backyard, i like the trying and the grass, i like the memories. if you have a question you would like to share, send us a video or message on-line. on-line. >> midterm elections are coming this fall. what can we expect? >> well, trey, happy new year to you too, great to be on your show, it is a great day. great day to be alive. as far as messages, you right, they all matter, history, the mood. but look, i look at it has what party is able to put all of these issues in an 80% framework? in other words, you can talk about energy independence but first question is, do we deserve gas under three dollars? who wins that argument? it is a republican case. we win that 80%, do we deserve a secure border, to protect the american worker? do we deserve a strong dollar so that we can afford things again like we used to? to we deserve schools for or kids that are not obsessed with pronounces, that not obsessed with allowing boys to compete against girls in sports, and do we deserve schools that actually listen to parents, they are killer arguments. it is dom common sense, the reason why democrat lost in virginia, and almost lost in new jersey. talk about you know, banks and inflation is great. but, the truth is, if you frame it in 80% ways and talk like that, republicans can't lose. trey: i hear you saying, everything you just mentioned. there is politics, they they were policy positions, and stated in clear plain language that voters can understand. my fear is, when i look at the g.o.p., now, i mean i'll ask you, if you were invited to speak to every candidate incumbent or challenger in the g.o.p. and say this is what you need to talk about heading to november, first, i am not sure you need a bulletproof vest to stand in front, they seem to like to fight with one another. trey: >> >> you put up joe biden, it used to be that democrats ran against george bush, for 4 election cycles after he left, then they will try to run against donald trump, joe biden is 35%, and kamala harris 28%, that is a common denominator that works across the board, that is what republicans need to focus on, then focus on issued that i laid out, and other part, what are democrats running on? run on look at job that joe biden and kamala harris are running, and run on more blm riots in name of social just -- justice in the cities, what are they running on? they have nothing to run on. joe biden and kamala harris offer nothing across the board, terry mccauliffe found that out, he could not use joe biden anywhere, they wrapped up together. a nice little extra present moving to the new year for the republican party. trey: all right, even if republicans win the house in 2022, joe biden still the president. so, i think it is important to say, realistic expectations, a little bit of the messaging is we're going to stop bad thing. but is it important that we set the right expectations? biden will still be president roh matter what happens in november -- no matter what happening in november. >> you are right, i believe and i am sure you do, someone who believes strongly in the words of constitution. i think faction is stability and power, i think faction is in many ways what keeps america in a strong position in the world, i don't think there is anything wrong with faction in dc, i am not saying that sells but i think you are right in the case of expectation, sometimes it saying we're stopping the rail stupid idea that -- really stupid idea that lead to $5 gas and 200 thousand illegal immigrants pouring over the border and schools teaching your kids idiotic things, we'll stop those, and maybe joe biden can see something he used to talk ', which is allowing to us drill for our own oil so we're not paying through the nose for gas, we ought to have a fence or some way to control the flow over the border, maybe he will see these things, maybe he will aallow some of these to happen, if not 2024 is coming, they are not idiots it may cause change. trey: set realistic expectations and keep your word, great advice. reince priebus, i hope you and your family have a great beginning to 2022, i look forward to see you in person. >> god bless you and everyone out there today leading into hopefully a fabulous new year. trey: amen. >> still ahead,a covid enters a third year, fox news host, dana perino is joining to us talk about reasons to be optimistic. trey: covid-19 and all of its variants continue to cast a pal over the country. we find a way through. we have done it in the past, we have do it now. here to help us do that is co-host of america's news room and the five. author of everything will be okay, pretty much busiest person in all of television, dana perino, happy new year to you. >> i think brian kilmeade beats me out on the busy front. trey: about what rays of hope to you see heading to the new year. >> one, we're fortunate enough to win life's great lottery, we were born in america. there are people in the world that would give anything to have that opportunity, you have already won life's great lottery, you don't get to choose where you are born, if you are born to freedom and you recognize that and take advantage of opportunities here to get an education and work hard, you can succeed. also one thing that with this segment and you reflecting on the year and the year to come, a lot of people go through this, they will lose a pet in their lifetime, i lost my beloved jasper, i called him america's dog. he was only 9 years old and died of a fast-spreading cancer, what happened immediately of an incredible outpouring of support for us. i also felt intern alley okay, and comforted, i tried hard to live with gradtude. there are studies that show the more that you express gratitude in your life, the more resilient you can become to challenges that is where you find that serenity, i want to find more of that in 2022, and encourage myself and everyone that i know, not to put off things because you are afraid of hurt to come, we got another puppy right away. his name is percy, it was hard. to go for that love again and extent yourself the way that god wants you to helps. trey: such an amazing point to be intentional in our -- gratitude and thankfulness. we lost a dog, i told my wife, i don't ever want to have anything else that will die before i do. i don't want to say good-bye to something else. but then you are robbing yourself of the joy of love. i want to talk about something happy, you wrote a fantastic book this year, it for young women, i read it, i thought it was awesome. do you think you will ever write a book for old men so i could have something to give to my friends? >> i'm going to work on that. i feel like i don't know what i would o offer in terms of advice. but i was thrilled about "everything will be okay," a lot of men did read it, dads, managers, uncles, i did a christmas special i signed a lot of personalized books, many were men, i am encouraged that i want to help young women, it has great advice for everyone. trey: it does. and i learned a lot from it. it is well written. i have a daughter, i have young women that i work with. so it was helpful for me, even though i am as far away as being a young woman as possible. a dumb question, you are the busiest person in my judgment in all of television. i feel stupid asking is there something you personally would like to accomplish in 2022, have not already done. >> i think that the importances of taking care of yourself, your well being, physically, mentally and emotionaly and faithfully fit is most important thing we can do for ourselves, i am continuing to do that, i love to exercise and have fitness, i am obsessed with my posture, i am only 5 feet tall, i think if i went to a doctor i might have lost an inch, about posture and more open in my heart that is a big deal, i do something for my posture every day, i am going to up it, it two a days. trey: i have seen new person. >> you have great postsure. trey: you are taller. >> how do you do that. trey: if you grew up in a house with my parents you would too, it was that or be put on restriction. i wish that all i had to work on, in life was my posture, you must be -- >> i have a lot to work on, i also want to pair down my stuff. you know, i think we feel like, in our houses we are always cleans the closets, we have too much stuff, i'm getting rid of things. trey: you are right, i need to accept getting rid of something does not get rid of the memory of it, i have golf cards from 20 years ago, and i can't remember anything about the rounds, i will see inn you in new year, i hope you and peter and everyone you love and care about have a great beginning to the new year. >> happy new year to you as well. love working with. >> thank you. >> tonight we live in a time and a culture where people are quick to offer advice for others, people are quick to notice areas of perceived need for improvement in others, i've been guilty of that myself, i spend every saturday this fall trying to help men women and stripe shirts it human nature to want to improve the world around us. tonight is areas of potential of improvement in others. as we know one year and head into another, i think it the right time to to two things, first. to be thankful we have another year. thankful for the gift of life as many around us have suffered loss. and secondly, to use this gift of life to engage in the hard work of interspection and self assessment. best country, community and people look within themselves for areas of potential growth, does not require much to find areas where others can improvement do we have the discipline to look within ourselves?
