the weather in new york, it will be pretty warm, 53 degrees. should be a good night for everyone standing outside although because it is covid, a pair down ceremony, you've got to wear a mask, that the reality of this situation. we are at the end of 2021. todd: the people in times square, it will be like every other normal night as opposed to typically thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people crammed in. they have to wear some sort of depends, you can't go to the bathroom free many normal hours on new year's eve, probably going to be a little easier, nice weather, not as crowded, social distance. happy new year. jillian: we begin with a fox news alert. a fast-moving wildfire forcing tens of thousands of colorado residents to evacuate their homes. todd: 5 crews working to battle the blaze that has destroyed 580 homes. the very latest on what is being called the marshall fire. >> reporter: dangerous wind driven wildfire sparked by downed power lines for thousands to evacuate homes and businesses as the colorado governor declares a state of emergency. harrowing scenes in louisville and superior county, the entire town forced to flee. video on social media showing frantic parents running out of chuck e cheese with kids in so as the fire burns dangerously close. wind gusts of 110 miles an hour in some spots dragging flames and break getting thick smoke prompting the evacuation of the costco and local hospital. >> we are looking down on, concerning seen with the hospital appearing to be on fire. >> reporter: security camera shows how fast the fire is moving with many residents caught off guard as they recall the terrifying scene. >> they are all up in flames. the wind continues to spread to other homes. it is so dark, you can't see anything, black of night. i would imagine this is what a nuclear attack would look like. >> first time i've been involved in anything like this and it is really scary. houses and things can be replaced, i want to make sure i will be okay and my animals okay and hope my neighbors heeded the warning. >> reporter: the governor promising aid to those who had to drop everything and leave. >> i want to assure you our fire personnel are working as hard as they can to save additional structures as we speak. when it is safe to do so we will start assessing damages. >> reporter: the 600 homes that have been destroyed before, 700 people injured including a first responder. todd: a horrible way to end the year. staying in colorado a shocking prison sentence for a trucker has been reduced to ten years. colorado governor commuting the sentence for a trucker convicted of a 2019 crash that killed four people. the original sentence based on minimum requirements sparking widespread back lash, petitions have the sentence commuted gaining 5 million signatures. one of the most part the campaigns ever on change.org. the vice president struggles to answer question on the inflation crisis. >> that ministration blasts the policies and prominent democrats panic ahead of the midterms. the details from washington, good morning. >> happy new year. this is what the vice president had to say when asked this question. >> was it wrong to consider inflation transitory? the price hikes seem like they will be with us for a while. >> we have to address the fact that we've got to deal with the fact that folks are paying for gas, paying for groceries and need solutions to it. >> reporter: went on from there, inflation is here to stay and warn against spending trillions in washington. >> i worry about 2022. i think there's going to be a hangover effect and the big variable right now, inflation bypassing some version of the build back better bill. >> reporter: whenever they go into the store inflation has skyrocketed to a 39 year high, food prices up 6%, gas up 58% and that's not all. to jackson, mississippi, all experiencing record-breaking number of homicides. >> reporter: we have progressive judges, shouldn't be surprised. and progressive judges and das in public servant economy. >> number of illegal migrants coming to the southern border, the highest in decades. hillary clinton issued the following morning to democrats. >> it is a time for some careful thinking. if we could have a congress, a white house that we can count on to be sane and sober. >> reporter: when the clock strikes midnight the countdown to midterms begin. with inflation, crime and immigration up from the congress. carley: thank you so much. happy new year. hillary clinton makes a lot of sense when it comes to her comments on the midterm election and she's not the first person to say something like this. if you recall after the 2020 election democrats were supposed to gain several house seats and held a panicked party phone call, people freaking out that they had lost ground, virginia congresswoman abigail san berger said at the time we could never say the word socialism or socialist again and have to stop saying defund the police, the party didn't do any of that over the past two years and many people think they will suffer the consequences. >> the preemptive strike by hillary acknowledging there's going to be carnage in the midterms for the democrats, attacking the party before the results come in, 11 months before the results come into the old guard democrats seeing what a horrible mistake they need by allowing progressives to hijack their party. it is also why you see so many congressmen and women retiring. they want to get out while the getting is somewhat good or not as bad as it is going to be. a last-ditch effort by hillary and other old guard democrats as the calendar changes to the party to the center to get legislative win in 2022 ahead of the midterms. the damage may already be done. crime, inflation, mandates that don't seem to be working. as covid takes flight. >> the president's party performs poorly in the midterms but we are also dealing with poll numbers for the president and vice president and look like democrats don't think they would gain ground over the next few months, and the chairman of committees, if you're in congress that is the highest level you can go. they realize they are going to be in the minority come the midterm elections and the other sign is a sense of hero dataware red states are gaining residents like texas, florida, blue states, illinois, california, as people say you are voting with your feet, areas that aren't blue anymore because people are so frustrated. todd: another map that is changing is the covid map. the disease, pandemic, record-breaking cases are reported against the us while president biden vacations in delaware. some questioning the whereabouts of xavier becerra. and white house covid briefings and anything like that. >> this turns into a game of where's waldo. no one seems able to find him on any of the issues he has altered fiction over. todd: lara trump discusses more on why the biden administration seems to be mia. >> eric adam says current mayor bill deblasio's vaccine mandate won't go away when he takes office. >> we want to maintain what was put in place for the business community. if there's a moment we can't change or alter that we want to do so based on the science. >> reporter: adam said his enforcement of the mandate would focus on compliance, not punishment. he added any new variant could be met by increased restrictions beyond the current vaccine mandate and president biden and president putin in a tense phone call yesterday of the russian president threatens to cut ties with the united states. todd: things remain tense on the ukraine border. >> reporter: the second phone call this month to discuss ukraine. following the 50 minute conversation both sides are reacting with jen psaki saying president biden urged de-escalating tensions with ukraine. and the united states and its allies and partners will respond decisively of russia further invaded ukraine. part of that response with extensive sanctions against moscow. president putin morning russia would sever ties with the united states if any punishment against his country occurred. a stock putin aid, to get security guarantees from the west, the buildup of russian troops near ukraine's border, tension at an all-time high. in early january lower-level conversations will continue to be there but officials in moscow advising the biden and ministration not to make any mistakes ahead of those meetings. >> reporter: biden has noted escalation continues, western countries will adopt sanctions in economic, finance and military areas. it would be a colossal mistake with grave consequences. >> of diplomacy prevails a war between russia and ukraine on a broader level would be extremely deadly and costly, something that is not good for either country. todd: happy new year. house armed services committee member michael walsh with this morning. >> those are his demands. he wants to dictate where we put our troops, where nato puts their troops, who has become a member of nato and backed himself into a situation where he dictates those terms or he continues or if possible moves forward with another invasion of ukraine, he's doing this because he knows he can, he knows he can get away with it, he got away with it under obama, and believes he can again. >> the verdict in the landmass called trial sent prince andrew's legal team into emergency talks. the mirror reported missing the season at any opportunity to discredit his accuser as nancy grace says maxwell may finally name names to reduce her sentence. >> i believe that all along she has been playing her cards very very wisely. she didn't need to implicate other people but this would be the time for her to start naming names. >> either way experts warn this will raise questions about how much prince andrew knew about his two friends, maxwell and jeffrey epstein and ghislaine maxwell can significantly reduce her prison sentence if she provides any valuable information that could lead to other individuals being prosecuted. she faces 65 years in prison so if talking is the thing that is the factor between dying in prison or seen the light of day again she has no choice. todd: i'm not sure i know which way she's going to go on this. let's do the math. she is facing the rest of her life in prison because nobody lives to 125, she is 60 years old, say she transit by half. she will get out when she is 90, 90 plus. how much of a labels you have at that point? i truly do not know. i don't know if i agree with nancy grace on that or not. the big question is will there be a cover-up now that she has nothing to lose besides friends and how far will that cover-up go? she's in a position to talk. the question, will she had how much will she spilled? this is a weird world that i know you are not a part of and i'm not part of, this uppercrust where they have these very very rich and powerful friends. i don't know how this will play out but you better believe all eyes will be on it because there are so many questions that still remain mainly how could the lies of the little girls, that is what they were, little girls be so jeopardized by these monsters. lisa: a weird world to say the least. todd: this is odd. the author of the 1619 project, nicole hannah jones, slamming the us as a racist country. in an interview with the ap she says, quote, we have been taught the history of the country that does not exist and we a society that willfully does not want to deal with the anti-blackness at the core of so many of our institutions that our society itself, the howard university professor also taking heat this week for saying she cannot understand why parents would be involved in shaping their kids education. time, 17 after the hour. president biden's recent comments of been so out of touch with reality that even the mainstream media started to ask about it. >> we have to acknowledge that, a 40 year high sound like americans should be prepared for more pain before this gets better. >> president biden: if we don't pass build back better i think you are right. todd: what president biden's agenda could mean for your wallet with economist peter morici. carley: darren hoffman and lera trump live on this new year's eve edition of "fox and friends first". these indicated they might have to raise interest rates three times to close things down. sound like americans should be prepared for more pain before this gets better. >> president biden: if we don't pass build back better, i think you are right. todd: what a difference one year can make from soaring inflation to a supply chain crisis and federal mandates putting mom and pop shops out of business. joining me as chief economist for the with international trade commission at university of maryland business professor, our friend peter morici, happy new year to you. in your estimation what is the number one way our economy has changed under president biden? >> inflation is the big deal. we were on a path, in good shape in terms of getting employment back, getting growth back but the march stimulus package manufactured inflation. it was financed with printed money and 2 to $3 trillion in extra spending power driving up the price of everything. the bills back america program would make things a lot worse. todd: all eyes are on inflation, this will not go away when the ball drops, it is something economist like yourself are predicting will be with us for a very long time. in other words it won't be transitory as the white house wanted us to believe earlier on. what else stands out from ways the biden administration has changed our economy? >> people have chose not to work because of the pain from the government. when i talk about 2 or $3 trillion that are out there a lot of that is refundable childcare tax credit, medicare subsidies and rent subsidies. it is good to help people in a crisis but the crisis is past, there is no reason for people to need assistance at this time, he paved them to stay home so you have worker shortages. look at new york where you are, so many restaurants are closed but the better open still can't find help. todd: there are too many people on the sidelines, you can barely get anybody to do anything these days, that has to change, something else that needs to change, i couldn't get eggs this weekend i'm only one person who had trouble in this difficulty with the supply chain in our economy and it is unbelievable but that said the white house seems to think we are okay when it comes to supply chain issues. take a listen. >> christmas gifts are arriving on time this year, good news, we have saved christmas. >> a lot of dire warnings about a crisis around the holidays. the most predicted crisis didn't occur. todd: i don't agree with that. >> anyone who goes to the grocery store, my wife comes back with stories of things she has to go to three stores to find. people spent 14, 16 hours a day, they don't go into the stores, we are in a prosperous area, but if we can't get things like eggs and milk on the first try what does it say about the more distant areas in western virginia and rural colorado. this administration is detached from reality. one example of what these people are going to do. build back america has been financing for childcare, childcare and establishment they would require every parent to use costs 25,$000 a year. their program would raise the cost of that to 40,$000 a year. that is just an absurd some. it would create lots of shortages, middle-class women would not have access to the program for several years, would not be able to afford the program but more than that there wouldn't be enough spaces in the program, basically a situation designed to placate unions, it is not the wages that will mess things up but the mandates. todd: as always seems to be the case. i hope 2022 improves on the economic front but doesn't look like that is going to happen. we wish you a happy new year. jillian: the economy is one factor that could be behind the president's plummeting approval rating. eddie scary has a few others to break down coming up next. ♪♪ our house ♪♪ ♪♪ i will bless those who bless you here in israel and the former soviet union the jewish people are living in very
