your questions about the situation in just a few minutes. but we begin tonight with correspondent jonathan serrie in atlanta, home to the cdc, good evening, jonathan. >> good evening, bret. the first authorized antiviral treatment for covid-19 that comes in pill form. physicians say it will reduce the cost of treatment. also make it easier because you can take it at home instead of going into a medical setting for an injection or an iv. >> the fda has granted emergency reduce authorization for paxlivid with patients are early to moderate symptoms likely to worsen. studies show the drug reduces hospitalization and death in high risk patients by 89%. the federal government has agreed to purchase enough of pfizer's drug to treat 10 million people. but a complicated six to eighth month manufacturing process means initial supplies will be limited during the current surge. >> we will have 265,000 treatment courses of pfizer available in january. with monthly totals of pills ramping up across the year. >> the highly contagious omicron variant has now been detected in all 50 states with south dakota confirming its first case today. and imperial college london college found risk for omicron variant u.k. 4 onto 45% lower than the delta variant. south african study waiting peer review omicron cases 85% less likely for hospital treatment. unsure about the new covid cases now approaching 150,000 per day. >> even if it is less severe, if it affects a greater number of the population, that will still lead to a volume of hospitalizations. >> ahead of christmas weekend, the cdc is urging americans to take precautions. >> please get vaccinated. get boosted. wear a mask in public indoor settings, and take a covid-19 test before gathering with others. >> many looking for tests continue to run into long lines and empty store shelves. >> you can't really get them at the store. we tried yesterday. they are sold out. >> major retailers including walmart, walgreen's and cvs are limiting the number of home test each customer can purchase. an army researcher at walter reed say they are developing a vaccine that shows early potential in come batting a wide range of coronavirus variants. they do caution that it's an early early phase trials and has yet to be tested against the omicron variant. bret? >> bret: jonathan serrie in atlanta. thank you. let's bring in fox news contributor dr. janette nesheiwat. thanks for being here. i don't want to dwell on the frustration about getting tests i mean i'm hearing it across the board. my social media is lighting up that people are going to pharmacies and just can't get it. but, the progress in getting this pill through the fda, can you just talk about the significance of that? >> absolutely. this, bret, this medicine called paxlovid is going to change the way we treat covid. it's a pill. it can be taken at home. the key though it has to be taken within 72 hours of your diagnosis. within 72 hours of your symptoms beginning to have the best effect and the best results. and this is why testing is so important so that you can get started on this medicine as soon as possible. this is a medicine that is going to help keep infected patients out of the hospital. especially those who are high risk. we see about 90% reduction in death and hospitalization and those high risk underlying medical conditions and for the rest of us that have no medical conditions, it's about a 70% reduction in death and hospitalization. so, very effective but it's a matter of getting it out now. you know, i inquired today, i asked my boss, i called pfizer to find out when can i start prescribing it? i had about 20, 30 patients at least already today who tested positive. so i'm anxious to start using it right away. >> bret: what was the answer? >> oh, so we're still waiting. we actually have to get it in our system. so hopefully within days we will be able to start using it but, remember, it's not for everybody. there could be potential side effects. for example, if you are pregnant, you are not going to be able to use it for those over the age of 12. if you have liver problems or kidney problems we have to take precaution. also if you are on certain medications, bret, we have to make sure it won't interact. i'm hoping within a matter of days we will be able to start prescribing it but there is a shortage. >> bret: doc, we have a number of questions from viewers, as we always do. here is beret, who writes: what are you supposed to do if you are fully vaccinated and boosted and you get covid but you don't know because you are asymptomatic, how do you know when to get tested? this is important because you might pass it to someone without any way of knowing that's a great question if you can get the test. >> yeah, absolutely. that's why we need millions and millions of tests to be available and accessible free of charge every single day without having to wait hours in ryan for it and that's a great question, really important, especially if you have someone who is vulnerable in the household. so if you think that maybe you were exposed, or maybe you weren't wearing your mask and you went indoors in public, that's a potential possibility of being exposed. so the best thing to do is to take that extra step of precaution is to get tested. if you think you were exbodied and you don't have the availability for testing right away. then at least wear your mask, and that will ultimately help protect those in your household who are vulnerable. ideally, if you are fully vaccinated. if you have had three doses. if you have no symptoms, you don't have to get tested. you don't have to quarantine. but sometimes it's good to know. it's not a bad idea to get tested once or twice a week to protect those around you who are most vulnerable with high risk situation, high risk medical problems. >> bret: i only have a few seconds here, doc. if you are fully vaccinated and i'm saying you have gotten two shots plus the booster, what do you say to somebody who says you know what? why don't i just get omicron and take miens thats. from what we have seen it's not that severe and suddenly i get over it after a couple of days. >> that's a great question. for most people it's not severe. but, bret, we have over 800,000 people who have died. and what county vaccine do for you? yes, you can still pick up covid, but it can lessen your symptoms. almost everyone that tested positive today that had only two shots didn't have the booster, their symptoms were mild. so it can lessen your symptoms or you will have no symptoms. and, you know it, can ultimately hopefully stop the spread of the virus in the first place. >> bret: doctor, we appreciate your time. merry christmas. >> thank you, merry christmas, bret. >> bret: president biden says his administration staved off a supply chain crisis. the president is also defending his team's economic record. white house correspondent jacqui heinrich has that story live from the north lawn. good evening, jackie. >> good evening to you, bret. after weeks of negative headlines about the holiday supply chain crunch the biden administration is looking for vindication. >> good news, we have saved christmas. >> a victory lap at the white house. >> earlier this fall, we heard a lot of dire warnings about supply chain problems leading to a crisis around the holidays. the much predicted crisis didn't occur. packages are moving. gifts are being delivered. shelves are not empty. >> the president touting action from his supply chain task force to get goods moving and eventually bring down inflation. biden said 24-hour operations at the nation's two busiest ports eased trucking restrictions and collaborations with big box stores for shipping made the difference. inflationary pressures persist with labor shortages a driving factor. biden promised keeping costs down is a top priority. but credited progress. >> nearly 6 million new jobs. a record number for new president because of my staff and my cabinet. unemployment down to 4.2%. applicants for new small businesses up 30%. compared to before the pandemic. [clearing throat] fastest economic growth in nearly 40 years. >> so far not showing up in the president's polling. >> we are going to be driven by policies not the ups and downs of the poll. >> biden framed social spending bill to drive down inflation and costs for americans. future uncertain. >> we are going to keep working on all these fronts. >> biden team does not have a new strategy to get senator joe manchin's vote after he killed talks over a rift with white house staff. >> is there sort of a shift in strategy since this all blew up over bullying? >> i wouldn't characterize it that way, jackie, but i would tell that you senator manchin is somebody who has won many tough fought fights in west virginia and i would doubt he is a withering flower on the side of the road. >> with build back better stalled the white house announcing they are extending the pause on another 90 days. they denied it has anything to do with their signature spending bills murky future. bret? >> jacqui heinrich on the north lawn. thanks. word that grew at 2.3 annual rate in the third quarter led the dow to 261 point gain. the s&p 500 up 47. the nasdaq finished ahead 181. let's get analysis from charles payne fox business. charles, great to see you. you listened to the president today, your thoughts? >> yeah, i watched the whole thing. i was somewhat frustrated, bret, this is a serious issue. can you tell americans don't believe your eyes or your pocketbooks and i don't think these kind of events help. i watched the entire thing. it was mostly hey bragging session about, you know, it being -- these things not happening before christmas. this supply chain issue is going to go on for a long time. there are short-term reasons for it but also long-term reasons for it i think the most important thing to understand is that the average american is suffering mightily. it's not about the christmas presents people may or may not have gotten. i'm waiting on few things, including some air hockey tables i don't think will make it. but the point is, you know, these sessions should be designed to seek solutions, you know, and every time they turn into some sort of cheerleading hey look what we did kind of thing. and it doesn't help. it doesn't solve the problems and it certainly doesn't help. public image. we do have some serious problems with supply chains and some of them are going to go away naturally. listen, the last stimulus checks have gone out. that is one of the things that created demand. when all that demand came up. everyone went to the computers and hit a few buttons bottom a lot of stuff and put them on ships from china. problem containers economic relationship with china, when ships leave here, they don't have that many containers on them because china is not buying our products. so they charge so much more over the last several months it's been two, three, four times as much to ship something here to there guess who pace the price? we do. there are some things in there some of the ceos were pretty cool, press smith ohio love if you ever get a chance look at his college on fedex that he got a c on. but, you know, i was hoping for more of a solutions oriented conversation. >> bret: yeah. so, if you are telling somebody at a holiday party or just somebody that you are meeting with what's the state of the economy as we are heading into 2022. what do you, charles payne say? >> i think the economy is good. but, i am worried about some of the signs ahead. some of the interesting things ahead. listen, we came into 2021. we came into this year in amazing shape. household balance sheets stronger than ever been. we sent out trillions of dollars. people paid off debt, bought stuff and put some in the bank. household balance sheets. the ability to spend money after you have paid your bills never, never been better. same thing with corporate balance sheets and we had a vaccine. i think we are going to be slower next year. i'm concerned, i'm to be quite frank with you i'm happy that this build back better has paused and maybe won't go through. i think it would have been more of a problem in terms of this inflation crisis, which is the number one crisis in this country. so, yeah, you know what? the economy will slow. hopefully in. i like that president biden brought up small businesses or small business applications that's the ethos of america. pulling yourself up by the boot straps. it began last year. it's continuing this year. and makes me very hopeful. particularly young millennials and general zers are going out there and making it happen. >> bret: let's hope for a good 2022. charles payne, merry christmas and happy new year. >> charles: you too, my friend. >> bret: up next, two additional republican congressman are hearing from the committee investigating the january 6th capitol riot. we will tell you about that first here is what some of our affiliates around the country are covering tonight. fox 2 in detroit as the federal government tesla allowing drivers to play video games on a center touch screen while its vehicles oare moving. the probe comes after the agency received a complaint about what is called game play functionality. it says the passenger play feature may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash. fox 31 in denver as supporters of the truck driver sentenced to 110 years in prison for vehicular homicide meet with the colorado governor to discuss clemenciy. aguilar are a moderas says the brakes on semitrailer failed as he was descending on a interstate 70 in the rockie mountain foothills. his truck plowed into vehicles that had slowed because of another wreck in the denver suburb of lakewood. four people were killed in that accident. and this is a live look at los angeles from fox 11. one of the big stories there tonight. a california woman run as nonprofit making dolls for children who have disabilities or other medical issues. amy it says she produces dolls for kids who do not see themselves on store shelves so it makes them feel better. that's tonight's live look outside the beltway from "special report," we'll be right back. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ learning is hard work. hard work requires character. learning begins in faith. it must move upwards toward the highest thing, unseen at the beginning - god. and freedom is essential to learning. its principles must be studied and defended. learning, character, faith, and freedom: these are the inseparable purposes of hillsdale college.
