Jerome powell acknowledging inflation is likely to persist longer than the fed had previously expected. American voters point the finger at President Biden. A new foxbusiness poll finding when it comes to rising prices twice as many think his actions are doing more harm than good. Lets bring in kevin hasson who served as chair of the White House Council of economic advisers under donald trump. Welcome. A year ago you called it. 7 inflation and here we are. I will give you a chance, do you see this persisting and where we do we go into thousand 22 . You mentioned 6. 8 but thats a backward looking number. Inflation hadnt taken off of it right now inflation is north of 10 if you look at the last few months but when you think of what fed policy has been when you had inflation at that level, it was very precise, very aggressive, and even at times surprising. In 1979, paul volcker did the Saturday Night Massacre. Do you remember that that is where we are. He was sure and station would go higher. They are running a deficit of one. 5 of gdp which is 0. One of what we have now and a poll, surprisingly Interest Rate which made markets realize this guy is serious. If we dont to do Something Like that, in the Michigan Survey that just came out, to a wage price spiral, all these wages that didnt keep up with inflation will go up and the firms will lift their prices, 70 of Small Businesses, so they are passing higher wage cost on to consumers. That is everybodys listing price. They need a Saturday Night Massacre site to get it is under control and youre going after it was scored guns next year. If we end like the 70s we will be lucky. Eric that is a dire prediction. I looked at what the Federal Reserve did this week, talks more hawkish lead but when you look at inflation they think it will fall in half and their Core Inflation Prediction excludes food and energy, 2. 6 next year. Is that Pie In The Sky . What are they seeing that you and i arent . As you and i have discussed the said models dont have a supply side and an administration that is aggressively feeding demand and attacking supplies, build back better passes, Small Businesses will see a 50 tax rate and corporations will see their corporate rate although there are still negotiations about how much but if you attack supply, inflation, the fed is kind of in denial but the main denial is the economy is really reeling because of the policies this year. If you factor that and it wasnt Rocket Science i told you about a year ago, 7 inflation but looking at demand and supply and supply is not doing well and demand eric the fed thing Interest Rates will go up 3 times in 2022. Is that realistic do you think or will they be shocked into doing more . If you look at the history of inflationary cycles and monetary policy, what happens is the fed hits the market over the head with some surprises so my guess is that will give us three because they put it on the table but inflation will stay the level it is now and looking at four or five months in a with annualized Inflation North of 10 and i wouldnt be surprised if they jump 50 basis points for going between meetings or something. Honorable people at the fed understand her job is to control inflation. Inflation is outofcontrol but the pandemic is a challenge for everybody so they have a chance to play catch up but dont forget what Alan Greenspan said, like steering the queen mary Fighting Inflation so it tried to steer the queen mary but the queen mary is on the rocks already and it will be a very ugly finish. Eric the white house saying pass build back better and inflation will go down. Thats partly based on the booties economist. What do you make of that . We are good friends and he send me a bottle of wine for Christmas Present. Cant be too hard on him but this hes not correct on this. Part of the problem with the bill is there are a lot of tax hikes but they tend to slow the economy and as it emerges, the inside analysis would reduce inflation but the tax hikes are reducing supply too and spread out over 10 years and all the spending in the bill is front loaded in the first couple years so precisely when we are already in a wage crisis spiral they are throwing this into the economy they are sucking it out slowly. There is no way that makes inflation go down. It just cant happen. Eric the build back better plan remains in the senate, republicans failing to deliver on the centerpiece. Eric President Biden conceding that his multitrillion dollar build back better bill will likely not pass the senate this year putting the centerpiece of his tax and spending agenda to 2022. Senate parliamentarian on thursday rule against a provision that would give Work Permit Deportation Protection to Illegal Immigrants dealing a blow to progressives who pushed for including that of the multitrillion dollar spending bill. Wall street journal columnist dan heninger and Kim Stross All and jason riley. How big a bill a big blow to the biden spending project is this failure to pass it this year . A massive blow. They expect to get this done this year. In large part because the bill is so ambitious and that is understating it. When it started we had three or four new entitlements, all these new laws and regulations related to climate, healthcare and an enormous number of new taxes to pay for. The most ambitious piece of legislation in 60 years, doing it with a very narrow majority, they knew they had to get it done to get towards election in the next year and the difficulty now is they have made so little progress over the past year. It has gone nowhere. The expectation was senator joe manchin would eventually bend and get on board. He has not done that. It is not going to pass by christmas and it is in big trouble next year as well. The democrats of really really dug themselves a whole. At the moment they are still digging. Eric to what do you attribute this failure to do that . You cant one thing you cant do is say President Biden hasnt been trying . Dan put his finger on it, the level of ambition here. President bidens lack of mandate to have this ambitious an agenda. This is not what voters signed up for. They wanted transformational, changes to voting patterns in this country, voting tools, tax credits that would apply to senior incomes. We are talking immigration proposals, essentially amnesty, legalization for people in the country illegally. People want to see control of the border. Theres a lot of sympathy with the dreamers brighter as children and what you do with them, people are looking at the border and saying we need to take care of that too. Theres nothing the bill for border security. Theres legalization of people like joe manchin complaining about the spending. We spent 7 trillion and that is enough. We need to watch inflation going on in this country and using shady mass to coverup how expensive this will be over time. This is not a realistic agenda given the Political Division we have to do it evenly split senate and narrow majority in the house. Eric i want to 0 in, a 50 57 you have to have such a vote. Not like hes been hiding under a rock that popped up in december and said i have this objection. Hes letting them know for half a year that he has a bcd, how badly have they misjudged him and why do you think it is . Mishandled and misjudged it them, operating since the center of this year on the proposal that joe manchin would roll over in the end and they have been poking at him ever since. He has been incredibly clear that hes worried about inflation, he didnt want to top line above 1. 75 trillion and wants means testing for programs, doesnt want Budget Gimmicks. What does Nancy Pelosis house and him . A bill that when you add it up because of Budget Gimmicks is 5 trillion with all the programs he said he didnt want and figured they would increase the pressure and instead he has continued to say no. They will try to blame him for this now but this is incredibly clear for a long time, what they needed to do to get over a finish line and close their eyes to it and made a bad bet. Eric they have another year to pass it, they control congress and the white house going into 2022 but do you think manchin will come around in the end of the administration meets his terms . Heres the problem. The administration in order to meet those terms has to fundamentally reimagine this bill. If youre going to get the Budget Gimmicks at which is manchins top demand you are looking at stripping out 90 of that bill focusing on a few core programs which can the Administration Keep its progressives on board and to do that . Can if it has the commitment but so far it seems to want everything and as for praying joe manchin will change they have to start over. Eric San Francisco mayor london bream hasnt changed, what the progressive is proposing in the face of that citys spike in crime. What im proposing today is what i will be proposing the future will make a lot of people uncomfortable. Now, she can have her cake and eat it too. It is time that the rain of criminals for destroying our city to come to a end and it comes to a end when we take a step to be more aggressive with law enforcement, with changes in our policies and less tolerant of all the [bleep] that has destroyed our city. Eric San Francisco mayor london breed another cracked on crime saying shes making Emergency Requests to the citys Board Of Supervisors for more money or police, cut 120 million from the budget San Franciscos police and sheriffs apartment last year. Nationwide protests in the wake of the george lloyd murder. The dramatic turnaround comes as crime surges in San Francisco and many other cities across the us with the bay area suffering a spate of Smash And Grab robberies in recent months. We are back with our panel, so jason, to borrow a famous phrase, the San Francisco mayor hit by reality. The progressive mindset is boggling. She promised her remarks saying what im going to propose here, more Crime Control is going to make people uncomfortable. What makes people uncomfortable our high crime rates, Smash And Grab robberies make people uncomfortable. Not her policing which is she is proposing and we see a pattern here. The oakland mayor did this recently, in minneapolis a turnaround, in portland, oregon a turnaround in thinking so slowly but surely it looks like even the most progressive cities are coming around to the fact that we need to stop handcuffing our police and start handcuffing the real criminals and keeping them locked up. Theyve been slow to learn the lesson. Eric if you expand on what she said she talked about drug use, rampant drug use on the streets, public disorder, homelessness and so on. It sounds like a little bit like she is endorsing without saying so endorsing policing which the progressives have derided for so long. A few broken windows proliferate people, great disorder, crime expands. Do you think that is what she is actually saying . There is a longdistance call between what she is saying and the reality of policies that will be put in place. The fact of the matter is mayor breed is not the individual in charge of setting criminal enforcement policy in the city. That responsibility falls to the prosecutor, the attorney, they are the people who decide what level to set bail, who to charge and for what crimes to charge them. The reason crime is happening in so many cities in parties because the police have either resigned or pulled back, simply not going after people because prosecutors like Georgia Gascon in los angeles employee will not bring charges. In chicago the county prosecutor, kim foxx dismissed 25,000 felony charges the first three years she was in office. What i am saying is unless in San Franciscos day the prosecutor stands up and aligns himself with mayor breed things are not likely to change. Hes facing a Recall Election in june and the voters themselves will send a message to the authorities in San Francisco it is time for a change. Eric the voters elected this prosecutor as dan pointed out in his column this week. Now i cant imagine the mayor of San Francisco, very progressive city would stand up and say what she did if she didnt look at what voters think and said i got to get on the other side of this and we are seeing that around the country. This is the backlash that would has been building for a long time. A lot of prosecutors reported in office some time ago, progressive policies on changing bail, releasing criminals, has been going on. What really changed it is 18 months ago we had all those protests and the defund the Police Movement and then episodes like waukesha where the perpetrator was on 1,000 bail, put attention on a lot of these policies. People didnt think much about it. They pulled the lever on a Straight Party line ticket without thinking much about the policies behind the people they were electing now when you have bodine and Larry Krasner in philadelphia, national names, theyve come to represent these policies and it is a big issue at the voting booth. Eric you know in new york crime turnaround, Stop And Frisk and cops focusing, heavy Police Presence in high crime neighborhoods. A lot of those policies have been repudiated. You see the political will to reimpose them . I do see some political will and that is borne out in these elections. Incoming mayors in new york and atlanta and seattle stressing Crime Control so i do think even in progressive cities among democrats running them there is some thinking that we need to get back to getting control, facing reality. We have a problem on our hands and we need to address or suffer politically. Eric russian president Vladimir Putin and chinese president xi jinping Take A Closer Look at growing Strategic Alliance and what it means for the usled global orbit. Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoo hoo ensure, with 27 vitamins and minerals, now introducing ensure complete with 30 grams of protein. Eric among heightened tension with the United States russian president the lamb hooton, Mister Xi Accusing the west of interfering in Internal Affairs of china and russia calling on beijing and moscow to safeguard security interests, inhaling a new model of cooperation, traveling to beijing earlier next year to meet with his chinese counterpart and attend the opening ceremony. Lets bring in cliff may. This new entente, is the symbolism or are we talking about a new stage of cooperation . A new stage of cooperation, a flourishing relationship. What do they happen, and most important of all they want to diminish the United States, they both want to end what has been the american lead liberal rulesbased International Order and replace it with an ill liberal International Order where they would be the leaders and make the rules and in places like the un they made substantial progress on this in many ways, Human Rights Council obviously, the world Health Organization. This is a very important entente between two powers, both former empires that want to reestablish and expand their empires. Each of them it is fair to say our regional powers and they want, when you say they want to undermine us global order is the first order of business for each of them to dominate what some call their spheres of influence or what they like to think of as their spheres of influence . Will china get americans out of the Western Pacific in russias case get the americans out of Eastern Europe and central asia and they can dominate those regions . Are those primary goals . I think those our primary goals, that the important next step. That is why you see the chinese taking the South China Sea and making them into military installations, trying to make the South China Sea into a chinese lake, threats against i russia has no problem with that or with the stripping of hong kong of its autonomy and various freedoms. Xi jinping has no problem with putin taking over ukraine if that is what he wants to do in exerting more influence their, that weakens western europe, both want to do that and both see the americans as the most important proxy to that in the european secondary but thats the immediate goal. How their cooperation working to do that . You mentioned the un, to make that essentially a feckless body in enforcing global rules but how else are they working together . A treaty, neighborliness and friendliness they revived and are extending, talking about increasing economic relationships. More trade, finding ways around the financial system. A big threat to russia i would say, to boot and in terms of ukraine is for the us and the eu to do serious economic sanctions like taking russia off the International Banking system, talking about setting up their own. They cant do that quickly but they can do it over time and it makes a difference, the security council, they know the un will not be critical of them. They are also making common cause with other authoritarians like the Islamic Republic of iran. All the authoritarian regimes of any import want to decrease americas power and influence in the world and even the whole idea of democracy is something nations should aspire to, authoritarianism is more efficient had a better idea in the long run. The initiative of china, a new imperialist action where they are all over the place and propping up dictators and doing things like probably opening up a military force, Equatorial Guinea on the atlantic, other authoritarians do the same. What does the United States do about this or is there anything we can do . We need stronger and more productive alliances with our european friends, too many think theres a problem between china and russia, that shouldnt play. We need to take more action at the un because that is the architecture of the International Order. It is useful and helpful the eu is getting serious about sanctions on russia but theres a real threat in terms of ukraine. I cant tell you what couldnt is going to do or when but one terrible scenario imagine putin goes into ukraine and simultaneously the chinese under xi jinping go into taiwan. That would cause considerable confusion in the Biden Administration a european capitals as well. The Free Democratic countries needme together and need Stronger Leadership from the Biden Administration than we have seen up to now. Eric the diplomacy also, more military investment. Thanks for joining us. Still ahead indoor Mask Mandates make a return and booster mandates begin as the cdc warns of the deadly winter of omicron variant. Scan the code on screen to try for free. Omicron has not yet spread as fast as it wouldve otherwise have done as has happened in europe but it is here now and it is spreading and will increase. We are looking at a winter of severe illness and death. Eric President Biden predicting a winter of severe illness and death as omicron takes hold in the United States, the warning comes as the us surpasses 800,000 deaths from covid 19, and the response to the latest variant claiming the steps they have taken have helped slow the spread. We are back with our panel, kim, that was a striking and dire prediction by the president. Do you think he was right to sound that way . Kim it is a little early to know if that is warranted. What we do know about omicron is it is highly transmissible. The numbers in the United Kingdom are quite staggering. The number of new infections are doubling every two days and so if it is making its way around the president is right that it will come here and theres not much we can do it will rise but what we also know and are finding as it tends to produce milder symptoms. It is a risk to people who are unvaccinated but even in the uk they havent had a huge uptick in hospitalization. It is a little early to go fullfledged to talk of big new restrictions until we get a better sense of this. Eric you look at the Media Coverage and the actions going on in New York City, broadway theaters Shutting Down, massive mandates being proposed, the Positivity Radon Testing tripled or double in a couple days. There is a psychology that sounds like 2020, do you see it the same way . I see it the same way. This is precisely the problem. They are acting like it is april of 2020, not december, two years later. Things have changed. We developed the vaccines which we have pfizer developing therapy. It is going to be a game changer. Many people are vaccinated. You listen to President Biden make that statement and as well as most of authorities and they blow by, they believe this one very important point which is omicron to the extent that it is a threat is a threat to the unvaccinated or people who have not been infected previously. That is a small percentage of the population. In New York City most people are vaccinated. Omicron, south africa, just reported this week that only one. 7 of people infected are being hospitalized but the authorities make it sound as though everyone out there has to fear for their lives because of this new variant. Thats not true and that does damage their credibility. People understand this. What do you think about where we are here and talk a little bit about this pfizer therapy, the president spent 5. 3 billion to buy 10 million courses of the treatment, but if we do get this breakout we will need a lot more than that. We are but that is what he should be stressing and what our elected officials collectively should be stressing, this virus is here to stay for the foreseeable future and the focus needs to be on getting people to realize that and encouraging to change their mindset from Prevention Per Se to spread your new variants and dealing with the fact that omicron is just the latest one. There will be more after this and we cannot react the same way we did in 2020 as dan was alluding to, Shutting Down economies, keeping kids out of school and so forth is not the way to go. It doesnt work work and mindset bring to bear every time a variant is coming and the president is focusing on therapeutics and we have to live with this thing. That is what he should be doing. 800,000 deaths is a terrible milestone, more deaths in 2021 than all of 2020. President biden on the Campaign Said any president who presided over more than 200,000 deaths should not be president of the United States. Is that kind of statement blaming the president for covid essentially coming back to haunt him now . Absolutely and it was a mistake when he said it. The obnoxiousness of claiming a single politician could shut down a virus that was raging across the world was always nonsense but that was the standard the Biden Administration set. Was are markable to me is theyve not asked him to to extricate themselves but situation and get to where jason just mentioned, the bar they need to be sitting is not get rid of all infections. That is not going to happen. It needs to be that they are returning the country to normality, as best prepared as possible to deal with ongoing endemic covid life. Supporters of School Choice are cheering as mayor like eric adams announces his pick for new York City Schools chancellor. What the end of the dimaggio era means for the citys 1 Million Students next. Or a run. Go for 10 runs run a marathon. Instead, start small. With nicorette. Which can lead to something big. Start stopping with nicorette. [uplifting music playing] i had a dream that someday i would just fly, fly away mayor elect eric adams announcing his pick for School Chancellor naming david banks to oversee the nations Largest School system was a former teacher, principal and Charter School supporter, a clear shift away from the approach with mayor bill deblasio, close ally of the Teachers Union and opponent charters, appears to be gaining momentum across the United States with 18 states passing legislation to introduce or expand programs this year. We are back with our panel, jason, you devoted your column to the subject this week. Hint of optimism in new york schools . Yes and not just in new york schools. It is important to remember, back in 2018, 2019, Teacher Walk Outs in arizona and kentucky, getting their demands back and lots of accountability, Squashing Competition from charters and post pandemic a real turnaround. The mayor of new york and School Chancellor, the Largest School system in the country, School Choice friendly a huge deal and i like to see it replicated. Now you have a much less hostile relationship between School Choice advocates and people in city hall and people running the schools and that is all well and good for the kids. The big issue is the cap on Charter Schools, the favor and against, more than 100,000 students, potential students on the waiting list to get into charters, that will be the first big test. No question about it. When Michael Bloomberg was mayor his chancellor was joel klein, they raised the charters but ran into a lot of opposition from the Teachers Union. Fast forward to now, weve been through the pandemic, the last year the schools were closed, people in New York City are still enthusiastic about charters and we should point out mayor adams new chancellor david banks, very interesting. He was the founder of a set of Charter School academies for all boys, mostly minority black guys and thats very unusual, 6 or 7 of those academies now. Mayor adams is aligned with somebody very much in favor of expanding the Charter Movement and i think theres an appetite among the public for doing the same inning in New York City. To pick up on the deck about the nationwide movement, to what do you attribute the shift in momentum that was going the other way free pandemic and is going in the choice direction . To expand on that number, weve had 18 states over the past year that passed legislation that introduced or expanded School Choice. That is quite the milestone in the simple answer is the pandemic on the school closures. People were outraged how long their kids were lacking education and a new look at what their kids were learning, that has been growing too, lack of standards in core subjects but also the rise of Critical Race Theory and other proselytizing, produced a parental back lash with legislators and they are getting the message and realizing it is a good issue and passing things at the state level. It was a cutting issue in the virginia governors race and i want her to what extent you would recommend this become a big push by politicians particularly republicans who dont depend as much on the unions in 2022. Republicans have nothing to lose by picking this fight and a lot of minorities are big School Choice supporters, not necessarily voting on the issue but republicans can get them to start doing that and realizing what giving Teachers Union so much control over Public Schools has done with the achievement gap, test scores, Graduation Rates and Everything Else and School Choice can make a real difference. We saw in 2018 in the florida governors race a big Dividing Line between the two parties that helped ron desantis as we have to take one more break. When we come back, hit and misses of the week.
