over. i'm harris "the faulkner focus" and you are in "the faulkner focus". cnn fired chris cuomo on saturday after court documents revealed he use sources to help his governor brother out of a sexual harassment scandal and now a new sexual harassment allegation against chris has come to light. for now the accuser is not known publicly and cuomo's spokesperson is denying the claim. however, just a hint at how cozy the elite media can be. they kept chris after this laundry list of controversies. he was caught shouting at a man who called and said it was the n word for italian managing to offend everybody. he got into a spat with a neighbor who called him out for breaking covid quarantine. he was out and about sick with covid. he also got priority covid testing thanks to his brother, the governor then. not just for himself but for his family. and his former producer at abc news accused him of sex harassment. that was the second woman. cnn media analyst last week said chris cuomo could be back on the air in a few weeks. wrong. >> this about a confluence of factors. about a series of headaches that seemed like they were never going to end. it seems like a case of death by a thousand cuts. this was about not any single headache but many headaches that continued to pile up. >> harris: i don't know if i would pick that guy to sell it. it is a network problem. you need a big name at the network. howie kurtz is live in washington, d.c. so howie, what do you make of how this rolled out and how long it actually took when you go back years with some of the controversies for chris cuomo? >> what a sudden about face. cnn couldn't wait to rush out an announcement it fired chris cuomo days after he was suspended and after months of letting the controversy slide. why the sudden rush? jeff zucker who long protected cuomo was facing harsh media scoout knee himself over his prime time host who crossed all kinds of journalistic red lines in orchestrating the defense for his brother and the magnitude of his efforts, seeking information about two of the women accusing the then governor of sexual harassment. cnn hired a law firm which dug up additional information about cuomo's actions. the "wall street journal" reports today that zucker felt misled by cuomo once the transcripts were released. cuomo spokesman telling the paper he said he kept no secrets and kept in close contact with zucker. he said he was disappointed. this is not how i want my time at cnn to end. the washington lawyer told cnn about a new sexual allegation involving a former junior colleague of cuomo's at another network, apparently abc but provided no details. cuomo denied the anonymous accusation but the timing of the complaint didn't help him. chris cuomo, the son of a governor, caught between loyalty to his brother and his network wound up acting like a political operative. cnn management allowed it to unfold before canning its top-rated star. >> harris: a lot to that story. the person they chose to roll out the information again not one of their top anchors. this was about credibility for the network and he is having his own issues. we'll get into that today. howie kurtz, thank you very much. i want to bring in jason rantz, seattle radio talk show host. let's touch on this a bit and get to the crime rocking the nation and some pretty explosive comments by one particular squad member congresswoman. for now, chris cuomo the departure and the collateral left behind for cnn. >> this was a crisis of cnn's own making. it is forlonger simply about helping his brother which i think people can at least justify intellectually why it happened. it's the sexual harassment bombshell that pushed it over the line. either the evidence was overwhelming for it to be determined so quickly. the bizarre leaked conversation between him and michael cohen, the former trump lawyer where he denied sexual harassment. weird at the time. no one understood why it came out and why he was talking that way. or just the idea with dealing with this was the straw that broke the camel's back. he should be offered due process but chris cuomo was unliked at cnn according to these reports and it makes sense, right? he has an insufferable personality pretends his ability to been much press half his body weight is a measurement of one's manhood. it is not. ultimately they will have to decide what to do next and whether or not they will lean into some of these calls for a female host to take over. >> harris: that's interesting, too. and we've seen the president of the united states want to make gender and race the reason for filling a job. we'll have to see if that's how woke they choose to get. look, about the women again not an unknown element in all of this. the previous woman who had leveled charges against him, the abc producer, remember the email he sent her and her husband. so sorry for the way he acted. i mean, this was a situation that was not even secret. >> exactly. they were very clearly protecting him but i'm assuming there is something a little bit more damning in the investigation they found out so far. a lot of it could have been prevented if they punished him early on. if this is punishment for the past things they know about they could have avoided this by giving him light punishment instead of none and would have been able to get out of this. >> harris: not the first corporation to learn that lesson. i don't use this word often but ironic that what might have been part of what got him pushed out the door also had to do with what his brother was perpetrated to have been doing against women. i don't know, it seems obvious. >> around the cuomo family. >> harris: the man who made the announcement, brian stelter getting called out for his panel of guests he brought on the show yesterday to talk about chris cuomo's firing. watch this. >> a lot more to unpack here. it has been a bruising week for cnn, a significant change in prime time and there could be more fallout to come. i want to bring in three non-cnn voices into the conversation to be as transparent as we can with you at home. >> harris: all right. so they are the non-cnn voices and sarah fisher from axios, david college media studies professor and podcast host. but digging into their backgrounds shows that fisher actually worked for cnn politics in 2013, one refused to say sunday that cnn has lost trust in the wake of the scandal. i want to say sometimes you get the fact checking if you have a journalist talk about a journalist leaving. it seems muddled. he is part of the media team, brian stelter. >> this show and brian stelter does the spin, he does the control after some story gets out that might look bad for cnn. he has always been that voice. i don't know why anyone expected something different this weekend. they lean into voices no one has heard of. it would get less attention. >> harris: except for the one who used to work for cnn. >> you had don lemon who constantly defended chris cuomo. all of a sudden that becomes an actual story that people will start to quote. >> harris: interesting. let's get to this. which got very bad almost overnight. los angeles crime victims are calling for the removal of liberal district attorney george gascon. l.a. and big cities across the country are dealing with a stunning rash of smash and grab robberies. most of them are blue cities, democrat-led cities. according to congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez it is not really happening. she told the washington times, quote, a lot of these allegations of organized retail theft are not panning out. but even california's attorney general also a democrat admits no, it is a real problem, aoc. >> smash and grabs, luxury store shakedowns, the pillaging of department stores. the organized retail theft we're seeing throughout the country and in california is unacceptable. >> harris: republican jim jordan says they need to look at themselves in the mirror. >> you shouldn't be surprised when you get more crime, when you defund police. the scary part of all this is it's intentional. democrats have legitimized crime. that's what is so frightening. >> harris: so we have seen in the course of time democrats are now redefining words. you are not defunding the police you are reallocating their funds. kansas city mayor told me that. but this is different. they are not redefining. they are trying to make it vanish like we're having a hallucination of being smashed and grabbed. >> absolutely. this is part of the abolish police movement and abolish prisons and this is how it comes across. this is what the actual plan is and they believe that the systems were built on white supremacy and need to be dismantled. they aren't just using that language anymore, redefining certain words to put p.r. spin on this. aoc is clueless on crime and i think this has to be on purpose. this has to be deliberate. i think the strategy is that you've got a bunch of people who are very far to the left in their own echo chambers. they aren't watching fox news or doing anything beyond listening to each other's nonsense and they might truly believe because they don't have any other influence in their lives that all of it is some right wing conspiracy pushed by pro-cop folks. the actual people who live in these cities are being impacted. the business owners are being impacted. customers who happen to be there during the smash and grabs are impacted. that comes not just with the danger to them but at the end of the day it also comes with political implications because those are -- >> harris: particularly blue voters living in the cities. >> they're saying wait, wait, maybe some of the positions that i thought were the right move for l.a., san francisco, new york, seattle, maybe they're not the right move. you will start to see them course correct. we saw it already in new york with the new mayor. you saw it in seattle with the new mayor and council member. that's good news. >> harris: some people i'm talking with, voters on the left are saying they don't want to vote for the democrats who are going to do that or not sure they'll stay with the party. if you get more independents you get more opportunity for republicans perhaps. >> absolutely. >> harris: liz peek says voters must act on rising crime. let us be clear, the crime wave sweeping our country has nothing to do with covid-19 as jen psaki has suggested but everything to do with progressive democrats throttling law enforcement in our major cities. echoing what you are saying, jason. >> at some point voters have to realize that you have to be your own steward of your community. you have to be the one looking out for yourself, family and friends. >> harris: what would you say about vigilantes. >> they can call them vigilantes all they want. you have to make sure that you are not becoming victimized but make sure you are voting. we've had this conversation before. we've heard from communities over and over again saying they're sick and tired of the gun violence or the smash and grabs in this case. what are you doing about it? are you getting together and organizing and putting the right people in positions of power? >> harris: jason rantz, thank you for breaking down the breaking news and all that was getting us started on "the faulkner focus". massive reaction to a massive vaccine mandate in the nation's most populous city. who mayor deblasio said must be vaccinated right away or they will be penalized. what exactly symptoms even if he is showing negative? >> harris: of course there is. he is coughing everywhere. jen psaki asked a lot of questions. was that the right message for americans to see and hear? dr. difficult to understand why anyone would want to use the overpowering force of the federal government to tell someone that if they don't cooperate with the presidential medical orthodoxy they will be fired. >> harris: it is picking up steam. the charge led by utah's mike lee there you see and this week senate republicans will again try to kill president biden's vaccine mandate for companies with more than 100 workers, which you know is like almost every company in america. the resolution will have bipartisan support apparently because moderate democrat joe manchin, who wants to give republicans enough votes to send it to the house will jump in. congressional correspondent aishah hosni has more from capitol hill. that makes things more interesting. >> it always is the case, right, harris? senator manchin throwing another wrench into the president's plans here with his opposition. this is what he said the other day quote, let me be clear, i do not support any government vaccine mandate on private businesses. that's why i have co-sponsored and will strongly support a bill to overturn the federal government vaccine mandate for private businesses. i have long said we should incentivize, not penalize private employers whose responsibility it is to protect their employees from kofld 19. it targets businesses with 100 or more employees. the rule goes into affect january 4 affects 84 million workers nationwide. critics say this is a bad economic policy amid a disappointing november jobs report and rising inflation. the bipartisan resolution here might turn out to be more of a messaging move. here is why. even if it lands in the house, harris, we don't know that speaker pelosi would bring it to a vote and eventually it would be expected the president would veto it. that's not stopping efforts to derail the policy, though, after failing to pass an amendment to defund osha's enforcement of the mandate senator mike lee of utah is promising he is not relenting on this. he have says it will come back up for any future vote-a-rama and keep coming back up as long as the president keeps pushing this. others are counting on the courts to come through as multiple courts out there have ordered -- keep in mind osha is incredibly understaffed. about 1800 inspectors to oversee 130 million workers. it is not really clear how they are going to do that unless people start calling osha to basically tattle on their co-workers. >> harris: it is not unheard of. there is a bill for 87,000 additional i.r.s. agents. what do we think they will be doing. who knows if they could be repurposed? i wonder if it isn't putting some pressure on municipalities -- judges have been blocking the vaccine mandate. senator lee and others not going to give up blocking it and what mayor deblasio just did in new york. new york city's mayor dropped a verbal bomb today. the democrat calling it a preemptive strike on the winter virus challenges and omicron vair jant. >> we'll announce a first in the nation measure. health commissioner will announce a vaccine mandate for private sector employers across the board. >> harris: the president gets pushed against his mandate, right? and then you got mayors that will come out and do this. and you heard it right. every single private sector worker in new york city will have to be vaccinated as of december 27th including proof of two vaccine doses rather than just one. that's currently in effect now. you have to be fully vaced. 200,000 businesses. that's a lot of people. vaccine proof will now be required for children ages 5-11 for indoor dining and entertainment. who is going to check those? have they considered the workforce pressures that this puts on businesses? critics pouncing on social media. one wrote this. vaccinated person may be infected and not know it and could infect and kill others, science, remember? another quote things are so dire and dangerous we're waiting three weeks to do this. now that's been my point all along. omicron has been here since november 10th. on the globe not necessarily our continental though we don't really know. dr. marc siegel fox news contributor, professor of medicine nyu langone medical center. they took their time on an emergency. >> exactly, harris. of course they are going completely to the stick now. what happened to the carrot? talking about 5-year-olds. we're still in the process of having pediatricians talk to to parent and now they can't go anywhere without the first shot. it will completely backfire. no testing option on the table here, no allowance for immunity after infection that you and i have been talking about. you have to then have a shot before you can go out. it makes no sense whatsoever. you have to have testing and natural immunity and you have to go slow with all of this. and offer incentives. it can't be the stick. there has to be incentives. >> harris: this to me is like a lockdown for the unvaccinated. that's really what it means to me. so you can't go here, you can't go there. you have to stay here or there. don't take your kids. that's really technically what we're talking about. >> i agree with you. it is also based on fear, right? then it will lead to shunning the unvaccinated and lead to bullying and marginalizing. as you said at the top it can't be enforced. it is a way of shaming people. it won't be enforceible. will you fine a 5-year-old? how do collect, with their allowance? here is my allowance. absolutely ridiculous. >> harris: as a doctor i heard you say so much about the efficacy and necessity of being vaccinated so that we can move and groove as a big public. but you have time and time again said this is not how you do it. oregon is working to implement a permanent indoor mask mandate for residents. a doctor with the ohio health authority said permanent means indefinite. thank you, we have a working dictionary. it doesn't necessarily mean permanent. we can repeal it as well but we are only allowed to have a temporary rule for 180 days and anything that goes beyond 180 days we cannot extend it. we know what permanent means, we know things can be rescinded. this is long-term. does this work? >> i don't like it. like you just said about vaccines. i'm a huge proponent but something where there is cooperation. with mandates on masks it will be fear again harris. people are going to say we can rescind it but the message you are sending is a mask forever. this mask fatigue. masks should be used when there is a lot of covid around, when there are breakthrough cases around and a variant that you aren't completely covered or a lot of unvaccinated people. that's a temporary measure, not complete. it doesn't work that well but i believe it has public health value as a temporary measure. the opposite message we should be sending. this is sending the message of the unending pandemic and causes tremendous anxiety and unrest. >> harris: sending the message of the unending pandemic. for those of us who have been vaxxed and boostered and all of that it makes it hard to have conversations that don't get heated among our loved ones. thanksgiving was a preview. we'll see how people deal with it around the dinner table moving on with all the mandates and everything. with so many on high alert over the omicron variant president biden with this after our peter doocy asked him about that cough and that voice last week. >> mr. president, your voice sounds a little different. are you okay? >> president biden: i'm okay. i have a test every day and i have a 1 1/2-year-old grandson who had a cold who likes to kiss his pop and he has been kissing me. but it is just a cold. >> harris: when in doubt pull the baby out as your reason. the president has been out and about at public events with those cold symptoms despite the fact that covid tests can yield false negatives and prompted questions from five members of the white house press corps. watch. >> a lot of people in the workforce are encouraged not to go to work if they are exhibiting those symptoms even if they are fully vaccinated. are the rules different for the president? it is possible to test negative several times before there is a positive test. is there any concern about having him at work while he has these symptoms even if he is showing negative? are there any things being done differently? have meetings been scaled back? he gets tested when he is not showing symptoms. >> on a regular basis. >> is there a change in protocol where he be will tested daily? >> not a change in protocol. >> harris: your thoughts, dr. siegel. >> first i want to praise peter doocy. he wears that mask exactly right. it is clipped over his nose and you can see how great it is. right. as far as the president is concerned dr. fauci had that cough and maybe he got it from the president because the president says he sees him more than his wife. dr. fauci got tested every single day and stayed at home. i think president biden should listen to him. the idea he is not being tested daily for this, he is roaming around with a cough. mask half on, half off half the time sending the wrong message to the american public. if you want people to follow you, be consistent and follow the same policy you are asking them to do. of course i'm concerned. i don't want him to be sick but tested every day. it is not that accurate. it has to be repeated. as a precaution he shouldn't be in public like that. >> harris: wow, remember a couple weekends ago maybe three he was out on nantucket on a mask partying like it was 1999 for something like an 80-year-old man. he wasn't wearing one around a lot of people. thank you. a world war ii hero long-time senator and former
