>> the democratic party, in a blow to president biden. >> we are keeping an eye on the nailbiter in new jersey. the governor's race, jack ciattarelli outperforming expectations to unseat governor murphy. carley: you are watching "fox and friends first". todd: we have live team coverage, ron meyer will react to it. todd: we begin with griff jenkins wrapping up the results. >> it appears 54-year-old political newcomer and businessman glenn youngkin may be leading a red wave sweeping the capital behind me. let's go, youngkin defeating terry mcauliffe by two points, 50 points 248 points, we've not yet, fox is not yet called the race for the lieutenant governor, i will get to those races in a moment but the man of the hour, glenn youngkin leading a comeback, a month ago mcauliffe was handily winning this race. he has focused on one issue in particular. he talked about it in the suburbs of northern virginia and his victory party last night. >> we will introduce choice into the public school system. we are going to embrace parents, not ignore them. >> back to the red wave sweeping the capital behind me, winston sears is poised leading to become the first black woman to hold that office statewide in 2002, the first black woman elected to the house of delegates, former marine, she spoke last night. here's what she had to say. >> what you are looking at is the american dream. it is a historic night but i didn't run to make history. i just wanted to leave it better than i found it. >> reporter: even more history may be made with the attorney general, the first hispanic elected to statewide office. we are following that race closely in addition, it looks like the house may flip to republican hands, 6 delegate races we are following for republicans leading, that would be quite a change in the state capital and as vice president harris said this election will determine what happens next november in the playbook for republicans in the glenn youngkin campaign. mcauliffe made his campaign about tying youngkin to donald trump. that following very short. we are getting reaction from some progressives, the change campaign, special interest group supporting progressives in washington trying to take control issuing a statement that terry mcauliffe can blame his loss on his own reliance on backward-looking trump messaging. democrats won't win by branding one opponent after another as a trump clone and hoping to speak out about the razor thin win, the campaign going on to say democrats have to grab power in washington, we may be seeing tonight and going forward the voters are rejecting that. >> let's bring in ron meyer, political analyst. what is your reaction to this tremendous political earthquake? >> virginia republicans caught lightning in a bottle. even if which is 2 months ago, two weeks ago when the tide started to turn, look at loudoun county, the public school situation ignited it. youngkin didn't win but close the gap by 15 points. in ashburn he closed the gap by 16%, combined that with driving of the pro trump area, that was the key to victory, virginia has become a blue state and this is shown how to win a blue state, bring the pro trump base and bring in moderate independents and that is what glenn youngkin did with his messaging and what terry mcauliffe didn't do. she drove people away because all he did was focus on trump. trump is not the president anymore. jillian: speaking the president, president biden in scotland yesterday said the virginia governor's race is not a rebuke of his presidency but you have to wonder if the president was more popular with virginia voters would terry mcauliffe had won? >> absolutely. if you look at exit polls, 52% approval, some polls a couple days ago showed him that 56% disapproval, biden won by 11 points. you get inflation, gas prices, look at other economic barriers, what is going on in washington, what does that say for 2022? a red wave, look at the virginia momentum. at this point it keeps going into 2022, the biden administration can change course, are they doing anything to address inflation or fix gas prices, grocery prices, i can't name them. todd: let's bring in george allen, former governor of virginia and virginia senator. once to follow up on something ron said. how much of a response the last 10 months of the biden dumpster fire was this win by glenn youngkin? >> the policies are a part of it. on the campaign trail, have you been to a grocery store or gas station lately? the skyrocketing prices for gasoline are being felt. one of his first acts on the first day was to shutdown the keystone pipeline, that lets russia have a gas pipeline into germany, begging saudi arabia to increase oil production. in oklahoma, north dakota increased production at all of this is unnecessary. when they say if they pass that bill, what is that going to do? for gas prices? it will only increase them and increase electricity bills. what happens in washington, even the crisis on the border, in afghanistan, terrible disapproval ratings of president biden but glenn, glenn youngkin, talking about the matter to virginians. by reducing taxes among groceries and reducing other taxes, mcauliffe is on the side of raising taxes. a key issue is safety in the schools, the content of what is taught in schools and safety in schools and this was a vote of confidence in the parents of virginia to decide and determine the destiny of their children in a variety of ways including education. there was a vote of confidence for police officers, law officers across virginia and a vote of confidence in three people, free enterprise running their own lives. jillian: we are grateful to have you on, nobody knows in her workings of virginia politics like you, you were in glenn youngkin's position as virginia governor, you won and election there as well. how much will glenn youngkin get done? the senate is still democrat, the house may have with republican but you still have the senate that is democrat-controlled. >> great question. when i got elected governor, the democrats control the house and senate. we had an audacious agenda to abolish sentencing and welfare reform and education, accountability, high academic standards and a variety of other issues but glenn youngclinton and jason and winston based on ideas and so the fact that they got elected, legislators will say they want to get rid of the tax on groceries or remove 40,$000 of taxes on 20,$000 of veterans retirement pay so this is a coalition of independents, a coalition of latinos, african americans, asian americans supporting these ideas and that the people of virginia who are owners of the government are going to want to see. to pick off a few rational thinking democrats to get these positive ideas done and a lot of other things to tenaciously defend law enforcement, not just stop funding of them or early release by criminals, it will change the parole board to not have those criminals. >> he ran on kitchen table issues of education, safety and the economy. thank you so much for joining us this morning, waking up early. we know you will have a long day ahead but thank you for starting it with us, we appreciate it. >> thank you. todd: in new jersey, paul ciattarelli and phil murphy within 1200 votes, with 88% of the vote people. carley: here to share his story is retired nypd lieutenant john macarry. >> thanks for having me on. carley: why did you choose to retire as opposed to complying with the vaccine mandate? >>
