streets for failure to comply with the vaccine mandates. we have the latest with the windy city and the police unions. also tonight, taking a look at how the main stream media is ignoring stories about the biden administration. now they're playing catchup to fox news. we begin with the #emptyshelvesjoe signing up american's increasing agitation with the administration. he seems reticent to tackle the country's crises head on. kevin cork has details tonight. good evening. >> good evening, shannon. few things stoke the flames of discontent like high gas prices, high home heating costs, rising food prices, and, yes, empty store shelves with the holiday season around the corner. so, is it any wonder that the president's poll numbers are falling faster thank fall temperatures. however, the transportation secretary wants you to believe in a the bottleneck is in a way good news. it's quite simple, really, as long as they're out there, the floating armadas of consumerism, the merchandise they carry is not here. the stark reality for the biden administration, evidence for all to see, coast-to-coast, hamlet to metropolis. to hear the man responsible for solving the problem tell it, everything is just swell. it's all part of the plan in a way. >> the demand is there, great news, which represents a policy of success. we need to make sure that the supply chains are there to support it. >> hard to imagine a more rosi assessment when the supply chain is by a shortage of containers and truck drivers leaving consumers with few choices and in many cases, without basic necessities. the white house as you may have heard announced a series of measures to ease the crisis allowing the ports of los angeles and longbeach, for example, to operate around the clock and pushing big retailers like walmart and target to expand overnight operations. but that hasn't stopped critics from lampooning the white house and the president in particular with #emptyshelvesshow trending no. 1 on twitter today. the same joe, you'll recall, who said this back in 2020 about covid-related lockdown shortages. tweeting, we don't have a food shortage problem, we have a leadership problem, now with the onus on him to put up or shut up, biden is talking, but saying fairly little. today offering not so much a detailed explanation of how he'll fix the problem. instead, just more pugilistic political platitudes. >> overall economic recovery? >> no problem. you know that? what a question? (laughter) >> do you think the bottlenecks are threatening the economy? >> are they threatening the economy? they have an impact on it because of covid. we got to catch up. >> no problem. now, despite all of the supply chain problems estimated u.s. retail and food service sales actually rose .7% in september. that marked the fifth consecutive month when the consensus estimate was for retail sales to fall. but in this case, consumer demand pushed the figures into the black, which is a bit of good news in an otherwise gray and gloomy week on the market. >> shannon: we're all cheering for good economic news on the country. you have an update on transportation secretary pete buttigieg facing criticism, missing in action in the supply chain crisis. but he has a good reason. what have you found out? >> for much of the day, especially for the main stream media, the coverage is on the fact that pete buttigieg was two months off for paid paternity leave amid the supply chain crisis. that's not the problem itself. the real problem is what's happening in the crisis, not that he took the time off. he put the best spin in the situation in the pacific. he said, listen, this problem is not that bad when you consider the president's policies are working. >> so you're saying it's a high-class problem. >> what i'm saying is that we are better off because the economy is growing and the economy is growing thanks to the leadership of this president. >> that's a fairly rosi assessment, especially when you consider the stark reality is we're looking at empty store shelves all along the fruited plains. and here's the real key, shannon, critics warn even with the white house's recent policy moves, it's likely to be shortages into the new year, which begs the question, if this is all because of the economic recovery that the white house said they were planning and hoping for -- obviously we're left with the question which is can why didn't they plan to fill the gaps in the meantime. that's a question they'll have to wrestle with as we look forward to the holiday season, shannon. >> shannon: doing all of my shopping at the drugstore. so, they have quite a gift selection, gift cards. i have a feeling that's what a lot of people will do. kevin, come back. we have something we teased last night, something unusual. going to test it live and see how it goes. >> drinky drinky. >> shannon: friday night. some viewers may be drinking too. it's about to get worse and more than just getting the ships to the port and get them unloaded. some of the biggest problems come after that. >> the clock is ticking on america's retailers. black friday, the day the stores are supposed to become profitable is just six weeks away. yet experts say it could take months to untangle kinks in the supply chain. >> terminals do not have room to store containers, truckers don't have enough chassises or tractors. or enough drivers to manage the flow of goods in a continues to bottleneck at the ports. >> it's going to begin operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. >> but officials admit the president's ambitious target isn't happening soon at scale. >> we've been mostly focused on the next 80 days or so. >> we've got work happening at the port seven days a week today. but we want to make sure we're in sync with the other players in the supply chain. >> we're trying to move to more effective 24/7 operations. not sure how much of that we're going to get done in the near term. but it's a good goal. >> a major choke point, the ports of l.a. and long beach where 77 ships are waiting offshore and 25 more are arriving in the next three days. >> today we're at six imports for every export container. that's the widest gap we've seen. >> america's trade gap with china surged 11% in august, pushing america's total trade deficit up 34% from a year ago, that's reflected in california's jam packed warehouses with only 2% vacancy. the main reason, there aren't enough truckers to move it. industry wants washington's help. >> at 18 you can go fight for your country in the military, you can fly a plane. but the idea that you can't drive intrastate in a truck really limits the capacity for the industry. >> to put this initiative in context, this week administration officials said long beach had gone 24/7 and the port of l.a. would, quote, meet that effort. in fact, only one out of six terminals in longbeach added that 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. shift and only four, not seven days a week. so it would be misleading to imply that the task force immediately doubled capacity. true, the port and other stakeholders want to go 24/7, but 80 days? well, two to three months? that's not days or weeks. in the port of los angeles, fox news. >> shannon: the violent crime crisis in two of the largest cities in the u.s. getting a stress test this weekend, dozens of first responders on leave in san francisco. chicago now bracing for the possibility that the policeman power being cut by as much as half as a result of the city's new vaccine mandates. we have the latest for us tonight. good evening, matt. >> shannon, in san francisco, more than 180 police, fire, and sheriff's department employees remain unvaccinated as the city's deadline to getting the shot passed wednesday night according to the san francisco chronicle. those holdouts could get fired. the deadline for all chicago city employees to submit their vaccine status to the city expired at midnight central. employees must reveal if they've been vaccinated or if they want to get twice weekly tests on their own dime and time until the official deadline in december. the union president estimates up to half of the police force might not disclose the vaccine status. thousands of officers could end up off of the job in the city with steep violent crime. chicago's mayor said officers who have not complied will not be sent home this weekend. but chicago police who don't obey worry they could be fired at some point soon. the union president has been encouraging his members to ignore orders from superiors to enter their information. chicago's mayor said the union president has destroyed the career as a cop and intended to lead his members off of a cliff. on friday, the laidest development against a president prohibiting him from publicly commenting any more about the city's vaccine policy. >> if you ignore a directive of your supervisor or worse, a direct order that's lawfully given, you're going to destroy your career. that's going to follow you forever -- over what? going to a website, clicking yes or no? and if no, saying that you're going to sign up for testing? really? that's worth it? >> with that being said, everybody has to do what's in their hearts and minds, whatever that is. but i will just leave you with this -- policy starts at the top in this city. and it has proven time and time again that the top of this city's policy needs to change. >> in seattle, the deadline for city employees to be vaccinated is next week. the latest stats from the city indicate 20%, about 200 active police officers have not gotten vaccinated. seattle's mayor's office tells fox news he hopes the officers will do the right thing. and here in los angeles, city workers must be vaccinated by wednesday or submit to weekly testing. nearly 900 los angeles firefighters have filed a notice of intent to sue the city if they are sent home without pay or without due process. shannon? >> shannon: thank you for the update. president biden is being sued by some members of the military, federal employees, and civilian contractors over a federal order mandating vaccination with a penalty for noncompliance being discharged or termination of employment. the class-action lawsuit filed named secretary lord austin or homeland secretary mayorkas. david amos stabbed to death in a meeting today with stitch wepts at a church. the conservative lawmaker and father of five served in parliament since 1983. 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene. the paris incident tonight noting a potential motivation to islamist extremism. the well regarded mp remembered by prime minister boris johnson. >> the reason so many were shocked and saddened was above all, he was one of the nicest, most gentle people in politics. >> he is the second sitting mp murdered in the last five years. the family of gabby petino still waiting for answers about her death after the grieving process of getting on with their lives because brian laundrie is still nowhere to be found. laura ingle is tracking developments tonight. good evening. >> hi, shannon. a lot of developments in the case this week starting with the news that her cause of death is strangulation, her parents meeting with the investigators and bring her guests home. gab bif was discovered september 19 in the bridger teton national forest. thursday her parents hiked to the remote site where the body was found to see the location for themselves and to leave their own remembrances including a bright yellow sun flower. they tweeted this saying i now know why you came here, #gabbypetino has a beautiful view from now on, love you and miss you. her attorney and officials meeting for an update on the case. the search goes on for gabby petino's former boyfriend, brian laundrie who returned without her september 1. police officers were seen at the carlton reserve some conducting the training while searching for laundrie according to police. the man hunt holding an unrelated press conference friday and was asked what his theory was on where brian laundrie could be. >> something like this could be a suspect when something like this happens. there's something going on here with the family. i hope he's apprehended and brought to justice if he's the one guilty of this. >> the petino-schmitt family plan to leave with her cremated remains. friends and supporters holding a fundraising event sunday on long island to benefit the newly established gabby petino foundation. shannon? >> shannon: laura, thank you very much. >> i don't think you should be able to make a million or a billion dollars, i'm a capitalist. but i'm also for 36 years the poorest man in congress. i make big money now like the president. all kidding aside. i don't think we should punish anybody, but just pay your fair share. >> shannon: president biden pitching the build back better agenda friday arguing it's the rich that will pay for it. but critics say it will hurt the middle class. lead dig in to the supply chain crisis and inflation, all of it, with insight on how we got here and what we can do now moving forward. we're joined by freedom works economist steve moore. glad to have you back, steve. >> hi, shannon. >> shannon: a common line we hear from biden, we hear it now. he was whispering it today that rich people aren't paying their fair share. you're the economist, so i will let you tell us what the numbers do or don't say about that. >> so, look, if you look at the overall statistics, the number came in a couple of days ago that corporations in the top 1% are playing a record -- paying a record share of taxes in the u.s. economy. if you look at the people in the top 1%, 2%, 3%, they tend to be small business owners. i never could quite understand how we're going to create more jobs in the economy if we're going to tax more people that create the jobs. we estimate 4 million to 5 million lost jobs with this big increase. remember, shannon, i helped to put the trump tax plan together with larry kudlow and others. we had the best economy ever. record low poverty rate in the united states, record low unemployment for all groups, including minorities. it was an experiment that worked. basically the biden plan would reverse all of the gains we made under the tax cuts. >> shannon: this president does not agree. he tweeted he said we can't go back to the way things were before the pandemic. we have to build back better. it will lower everyday costs and build an economy where everybody has the fair share and not just the wealthy. let's get this done. the pandemic was horrible on so many different levels for so many different people. but he's saying he doesn't want things to go back to before the pandemic where you say the economy was in good shape and most americans felt good about where we were. >> no doubt about it. in fact, the end of the obama presidency, only about 1 in 3 americans felt the economy was on the right track. by the end of 2019 before covid, 2 out of 3 americans felt like things were on the right track. we had a record number of new jobs. we had good wage gains. i think the thing that we were kind of proudest about was that the lowest income people had some of the biggest gains. i just don't understand the logic of increasing american taxes that will put the u.s. at a competitive disadvantage. and the big story right now with the u.s. economy that nobody in the biden administration saw coming was this inflation that you've talked about, shannon, the fact that inflation is now up to 6% in the economy. worker wage gains are only up 4%. you don't have to be a mathematician to understand if your cost of living is going up 6% and your wage is only going up by 4%, you're losing ground. so the middle class is losing ground so far under the bide b administration. >> shannon: i went to law school because i was told there would be no math. i get that. we're told, though, this inflation is a good thing. i want to play something that jason fuhrman said earlier today on america's newsroom. >> the reason we have this inflation is actually a good reason. that the unemployment rate has come down, the family has gotten money, and people are buying more things than ever before. the problem isn't that our ports stopped working, it's that people are buying so much stuff that so much is trying to come through our ports right now. >> shannon: so people are buying so much stuff that we can't keep the shelves stocked and the ports can't handle the traffic because of all of the stuff we're buying. does that sound good to you? >> i don't understand that argument, really. if you look at in the '80s, in the reagan era, we had rapid increase in employment and falling prices. we had the same thing under trump. we had a strong economy with one of the lowest unemployment rates ever and inflation was only running at 1% or 2%. now running at 6%. i go back to when jimmy carter was president and we had inflation rates higher than they were now, i think that's what cost jimmy carter his presidency when he lost in a landslide to ronald reagan. people hate inflation. you see people at the gas stations and stores, you see people grumbling about the higher taxes. we're headed to $5 to $6 gallon gasoline in the next week or so. i don't want to ruin people's weekend. these are all over the economy. increasing the debt and increasing the borrowing and the printing of money in washington is only going to make this inflation problem worse. >> well, we're told we're probably not going to get our christmas presents. and if you're saying $5 and $6 a gallon of gas, a lot of people are going to feel like they're getting coal in their stocking this year. whether its a republican or democrat, people don't like it when it hits their wallet. great to see. steve moore, great to see you. >> have a great weekend. >> okay, a 90-pound beagle gets ripped. his amazing transformation. and he's as cool as the other side of the pillow. this reporter -- he got a shout out from tony hawkment. the viral video, next. capsule clinically shown to cause fewer ulcers than plain aspirin. vazalore is designed to help protect... releasing aspirin after it leaves your stomach... where it is absorbed to give you the benefits of life saving aspirin... to help prevent another heart attack or stroke. heart protection with your stomach in mind. try new liquid-filled vazalore. aspirin made amazing! ordinary tissues burn when theo blows. so dad bought puffs plus lotion, try new liquid-filled vazalore. and rescued his nose. with up to 50% more lotion puffs bring soothing softness and relief. a nose in need deserves puffs indeed. up to one million dollars. that's how much university of phoenix is committing to create 400 scholarships this month alone. if you're committed to earning your degree, we're committed to making it accessible. because we believe everybody deserves a chance. and sometimes one chance is all it takes to change everything. see what scholarship opportunities you may qualify for at phoenix.edu is now a good time for a flare-up?
