how many officers are you down? >> the 1400 positions we lost plus an additional 300 vacancies we haven't filled, they impose a hiring freeze on our department while they lifted it for all county department except the sheriff's department services targeted directly to on public safety for the political agenda of the board of supervisors, so please do not care about the safety of their residents. this is appalling. >> you have a 65% increase in homicides year to date from september 2, '05, increase in shooting victims through the same period, you can't afford to have one or two this cops on the street, what are the actual numbers. how many cops might you lose it this vaccine mandate is enforced? >> if you are looking at 10% we would be losing 800 deputies, that includes senior deputies like homicide investigators, we are going to lose the tenured people at the end of their careers that are your most experienced people, subject matter experts in homicide, gang investigations, swat team, the elements that are very difficult to replace, take a long time to develop them, those are people that will retire early and this is so politicized that i cannot in good conscience impose a mandate like that. laura: what are you hearing from the board of supervisors, weaving from the mayor? they can be happy with saying i'm not going to enforce the mandate. >> since we have one party in california, this politicized is the vaccine mandate which just like the essential and nonessential businesses and destroyed tens of thousands of businesses they thought was a great idea this is one just like that, poorly thought-out, poorly executed and when the results blow apart they will just pretend they had nothing to do with it. i'm not going to be a part of that. >> we should say sheriff villanueva that is encouraging vaccines for his department, correct, you've encouraged them to get the vaccine but you don't like this mandate. >> exactly. i'm vaccinated myself. my entire family is vaccinated but i'm not going to impose it to my will that each person, encourage people to get the vaccination but we are not going to impose it. >> it is an endangerment public safety, you can't afford one less cop on the streets. last late august, physician doctor aaron karentaughty, took the university of california irvine to court over it strictly and vaccine mandates, he did so on behalf of colleagues like himself who i have 30 had natural immunity from past infection, this argument is backed by scientific evidence but uc irvine doesn't seem to care about that so october 1st they suspended him, then band him from working on campus, or seeing his patients. doctor ^10y, you were a psychiatrist, we reached out to uc irvine for comments, they didn't respond. look like they are trying to beat you into submission. they not only suspended you but put you on investigative leads. what does that mean? >> that is what it feels like to be, they are not allowing me to come on campus at all, initially not allowing me to see my patients. i was notified at 5:00 pm on thursday last week and went into effect the next day. i had already left the office, i was given no time to notify my patients, the supervising clinics every week that i was being placed on leave, they didn't know what happens to me or where i had done. my patients pushed back and the university relented and is allowing me to see them by telemedicine for visits this month. that anyone knows of face-to-face encounter and resume encounter are not the same thing. so they suspended me, my ability to earn a living outside the university while i'm suspended is crippled by my contract which says i can only see patients at the university. i'm in a tough spot professionally and there are other folks at the university who have also not been vaccinated or granted an exemption yet but those folks have not been sent home or placed on this investigatory leave status so from my vantage point it looks and feels like a form of retaliation because i filed a lawsuit as you mentioned in federal court challenging the constitutionality of their vaccine mandate. >> universities like uc irvine are emboldened by national health leaders who don't bother to study natural immunity. this is doctor fauci a few weeks ago. >> i get calls all the time, people say i already had covid. i am protected, the study says even more protective than the vaccine alone. they also get the vaccine, how do you make the case? >> that's a really good point. i don't have a firm answer for you on that, that's something we have to discuss regarding the durability of the response. >> millions of people have gotten this virus and he doesn't have a net server on natural immunity. you are the director of medical ethics at uc irvine. are these vaccine mandates medically ethical given the complete disregard for natural immunity?
