But they say assuming they show up, 12,400 will have their cases heard by an immigration judge. Many are given notices to appear and simply released into the u. S. A bit of a challenge. Its a challenge. Because once the message gets sent to other potential caravans coming to mexico or coming from mexico into the u. S. They are going to want to make that journey . What do you think the biggest mistake was during this entire covid situation . Well, i think there is a lot of focus on the political narrative, whether or not there were political mistakes made and certainly political standpoint when people dont focus as much on is more systemic features of government where we had failures in the structure of the response. One of the biggest failures in the structure of the response in my my view we turned too touch cdc and had this misperception that cdc had operational capacity to actually mount a response to a Public Health crisis of this magnitude when they never had that capability. Dr. Walensky, thanks for being here. You just heard Scott Gottlieb talking about about the cdc and some of the shortcomings. I just want to, before we talk about everything else, get you to address that head on, about the fact that the cdc hasnt had in critics minds its open data and statistics. Have you been relying on israel and other places on big Policy Decisions that affect everybody. Yeah, good evening, bret. Its great to be here. I, at this point in time reiterate the cdc is a very different place than it was four years ago. I do want to acknowledge though that dr. Gottlieb is right in an important area and that is the cdc has not been resourced in order to accommodate a response of this magnitude and i say that with a decade, this past decade where we have had infectious threats like h1n1, ebola, zika and now covid19 and during that last decade we have lost over 60,000 jobs. We have had Data Infrastructure that has not been interoperable among states and we have had weak lab capacity. What i really think is a key message from dr. Gottlieb is that the cdc needs more resources to build a more robust Public Health infrastructure that has been funded over time with these threats come and go. Bret considering all of that lets get to this decision on the Booster Shots. Throughout this we have heard from experts like yourself and others follow the science, follow the science. Are we following the science with this decision that you have made about Booster Shots . We are absolutely following the science. I have attended Fda Advisory Committee that occurred on friday and i listened to hours of scientists. I attended and tuned in to hours long deliberation and discussion from a Stellar Group of ache item admissions part of our Advisory Panel at the cdc. What you are starting to see is science is emerging. We are in a pandemic here. We are actively getting new information every Day Effectiveness of vaccines and boosters and safety of these vaccines and updating our guidance every single day and following the science. Bret right. Dr. Walensky you mentioned the fda Advisory Board it voted 162 against a general broad booster shot for everybody. It did say 65 and older and immunocompromised and you went beyond that and said Frontline Workers fall into that and expanded by millions of people. Take a listen to fda and then Admiral Brett Giroir about. This very clear populations that have impaired or diminished good cell ryu larr responses and a boost may be very appropriate for them. Its not clear to me that the data we are seeing right now is applicable and necessary to the general population. The person that ignores data is the one that is surprised. We are not going to ignore data. There are several key points, i think that very strong date that third doses that have been given. The president announces a month ago, before the science or any data, that he is going to have a booster campaign. The science comes o the scien confusing or smell of politics, i dont know what is. So, of course this is going to lean to more vaccine hesitancy. Going to backfire in certain communities you can address that head head on there. Absolutely. The clip you will neglected to show unanimous vote from the fda Advisory Council which was the final polling which actually asked could Frontline Workers, people people in Healthcare Workers, do they merit a boost . That was unanimous on the fda Advisory Council and their guidance and their safety and efficacy guidance suggested and regular gla torely approved the authorization for use in people with occupational exposure. It came to our cdc Advisory Board and we deliberated on it. It was a close call. As you noted the vote was 69. But we had a unanimous vote from the fda. We had a close call from the cdc and following the science, following the safety, we i made the decision to go along with what the fda said and with what many of what our Advisory Board said. Bret the First Advisory 162 that was against the overall generic booster that the president was talking about weeks ago. You are saying thats different than what you eventually ended up at . So, yes. We did not recommend boosters for every american at this moment in the United States. Bret but you expanded it . We no. What we said is boosters are now recommended for people over the age of 65. For people in longterm care facilities. For people at high risk of severe disease, by virtue of the fact that they have comorbidities and for high risk of people who are exposed by virtue of where they live or where they work. So this is not for all americans and its certainly after six months of your past your second dose and this is for people who received. Bret couple more things. One is someone who halls had covid, do they have more or less immunity than somebody who has a vaccine but didnt have covid . Thats a really important question and one that is being actively scientifically followed. We do know that people who have infection induced immunity get a robust response. Some of them do. We have seen data that has demonstrated that we have also seen data that if you vaccinate both people theyre two and a half times more protected than they would have been if you dont vaccinate those people. And thats the reason for the recommendation vaccinate people who have infection induced immunity. Importantly though, there are things we dont know. So we dont know, for example, what if you only had mild disease . Or what if you had disease months ago and how much has your immunity waned or, in fact, what if you had a different variant . How well is your protection against Delta Variant if you have had alpha or wild type variant . So in the context of so many scientific questions around us, we are absolutely recommending that people who have had infection before again be vaccinated. Bret we have gone a long way to deal with some of the things that are out there. We have had you on here, the surgeon on here to talk about how the vaccines over all have been safe and have been study deed for years and years and years. However, there are a lot of people who are still scared about putting it in their body just to be honest. And are there enough is there enough information from you about the negative impacts that some have seen about the vaccine around the country . Are you addressing those head on . You know, we have now vaccinated nearly 6 billion people around the world. We have vaccinated more than 1 will 0 Million People twice for the mrna vaccines in this country. A few million of those got the j and j vaccine and only received one about 12 million of those. We have an extraordinary amount of safety data that we four collecting in four different safety signals. When it came to the j and j vaccine, we were able to detect signals of 6 in 8 million. We can detect our safety down to very, very rare events. And what i will tell you is with all of this vast experience of these vaccines, we have yet to see adverse events in the situation where i would not recommend the vaccine. The Vaccine Risks are far outweighed by the severe risk of covid. You have a 10 fold more likely chance to be hospitalized and an 11 fold more likely chance to die if you are unvaccinated. Bret last thing, quickly. Do you know a time frame for a vaccine for kids under the age of 12 . We saw some data early this week from pfizer that in their Press Release we are really hopeful that they will be submitting those data soon. We will address that with urgency.
