And Security Today once again was tight around New York especially on this 20year mark, the commissioner of the nypd say they employed many resources to make sure New York is safe and secure. Certainly interesting time right now. Vice president Kamala Harris was also here and she spoke about the importance of national unity. The names of the 40 passengers and crew who died that day were read out loud by their Loved Ones, all who died after they read the names as well former president george w. Bush Spoke Today about the america he knows we are and the america he knows we can continue to be. These americans were brave, strong and united in ways that shocked the terrorists but should not surprise any of us. Reporter on the morning of September 11th having heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the pentagon through Phone Calls on the planes with Loved Ones, the 43 passengers voted and decide Today Attack the hijackers in an effort to regain control of the plane which was believed to be headed straight towards the capitol building. Last night families let a candlelight for each of the heros of flight 93 and placed in front of wall of names which is built exact Flight Path of the flight. Reporter flight 93 was just an 18 minutes away from washington, d. C. Flying time and john, somebody named jeff who use Today Work At The capitol stopped me and said moments ago i came on the tenth anniversary and now the 20th, people dont recognize how many people they owe their lives of the heros of flight 93, jon. Jon Bryan Llenas in shanksville, pennsylvania, bryan, thank you. Former commissioner of the Fire Department of New York, thomas vaughn. He was commissioner of that department on September 11th, 2001. You lost 343 of your firefighters that day. Many of men that you knew very well. It had to be the worst day of your life. Yeah, it was, jon, and it just got worse as the day went by because the hardest part of the whole tragedy was dealing with the families and as the days went by, we couldnt give them whAt They wanted, they wanted to have their Loved Ones, we couldnt give Them A Rewouldnt Rescue we couldnt Rescue Anybody and we had no survivors and having trouble getting remains and having remains and someone to to have in a coffin and go to a funeral and just show the respect that you know they deserve was very, very difficult and just made the job for everybody that much worse. John and you lost so many leaders in your department as well that day. It must have been tough to go off . Jon, we had the best group of chiefs in the world. New york has so many highrise buildings, so many dangerous buildings, so many Prevention Laws and codes and everything else. The chiefs really knew whAt They were doing so when we had the second Plane Hit, we had to split them. I was in the North Tower lobbying, we sent half of them to the South Tower to try to get a handle on what was going on there and then when he we lost, many of Them Anyway, we were able to get many of them out of the lobby before the North Tower collapsed but the South Tower was surprised to everybody and the second tour hit, it was the first tower to come down. Yes, youre right, replacing people is easy because it achieved its list, qualified people on a Promotion List but replacing that Experience And Dedication thAt Those chiefs having gone through the Fire Department and those warriors in the 70s and 80s were hard to replace. I have trouble finding good. I think of two good examples, the Admiration And Respect for firefighters All Around The World was raised considerably with the sacrifice that my guys made that day giving up so much for strangers, not just the loved one. We know what family and people will do for a loved One But Stranger thAt Takes a special sacrifice. When i look At The tunnel to Towers Foundation thats done so much for soldiers, have been wounded in our different crisis All Around The World, the limbs and the legs and arms thAt They lost and whAt These whAt The tunnel to Towers Foundation has done for them giving them homes thAt They can live as best as they can and i think that has been one really, really positive result of September 11th, what steven stillers family did to always remember him. John former nypd commissioner. Thank you, john. John today is a day for remembering and also looking ahead as the War On Terror grinds on and all eyes are on President Biden to see how he and his Administration Plan to continue the fight. Peter doocy has more on that, peter. Peter a key component of the Biden Doctrine is. Over Horizon Capability. Peter previous post from previous president s. Theres a future there thats brighter not only for afghan people but most importantly american security and you guys are are the tip of the spear. Peter without americans in afghanistan anymore, American Military Muscle will be hundred or thousands of miles away. We are going to retain on over the Horizon Capability that if they were to come back to be able to take them out surgically moved. Critics charged, this wont work. Let me just say this is like over the rainbow. Peter Biden Secretary says theres no question that it will be more difficult, Trump Security Adviser recently explained why. The hours it takes to fly, man or unmanned mission from the gulf to afghanistan is extensive, so in thAt Time period targets can move, hostages can be removed. Peter however, when the president made this promise. We will never forgive, we will not forget. We will hunt you down to the ends of the earth and you will pay the ultimate price. Peter that happened. The over the Horizon Capacity can work and has worked in going over isis targets and killing people that went after troops. Peter longterm effectiveness of leaving terrorists alone in afghanistan. I would say that without soldiers on the ground with the cia present helping them, the likelihood of the 9 11 has gone up by 70 or 80 . Peter for now the president is not looking back. The War In Afghanistan is now over. Peter and the president defends the way he pulled out by if the man who planned 9 11 had done it in a country other than afghanistan the u. S. Would have never gone in the first place and hes counting on advances in Military Technology to keep tabs on the terrorists who could try to do it again. At the White House, Peter Doocy, fox news. John peter, thank you. On this day 20 years ago our own Bret Baier drove from georgia to the pentagon to report on the ongoing tragedy there and keep americans updated as the True Gavety of the situation began to unfold in realtime. Here is a look back. President bush call it is terrorists responsible for the scenes in new York City and here At The pentagon, enemies who Cant Run for cover for ever. What started out as a hopeful Rescue Mission has turned into a dismal recovery operation. John bret is anchor of Special Report these days and he joins us with his perspective 20 years later. Bret, im sure it seems like yesterday to you. It really does, john. Hearing your anchoring that day of the planes hitting the world trade tower. But i think not about our situation and journalists and what we did but of all of the people who died that day and the families who were dealing with it today was amazing is as horrible as that day was with some 3,000 people almost delaying it could have been worse. If you think of flight 93, all that happened on the plane with Todd Beamer and bringing the plane down because it could have gone to the u. S. Capitol or the White House and if you think of flight 77 hitting the pentagon actually it hit the pentagon going through 3 rings of the fivering pentagon but it was on a section that was being renovated and there were large office that is were empty on that section. People did die but many, many more could have. You think about what could have been and what happened and where we go next. John also worth pointing out thAt The flights that were hijacked were very lightly loaded, now, thats no consolation to the people whose Loved Ones were on board those planes but to have, for instance, on flight 77 40 people on board a 757, thats a very light load, indeed. You have been to afghanistan many times as a result of what happened on that day and obviously as a result of the launching of the war there. Give us your thoughts on that, bret. Well, i think you Cant Look At This day without looking at what has transpired in afghanistan over the last couple of weeks and on this day the taliban celebrating inauguration of the new taliban government. I think theres a lot of concerns in the intelligence community. I talked to about the possibility of Terrorism Sprouting up again in afghanistan. We as a country are much better, the Defense Department, the department of Homeland Security that was created after 9 11, the counterterrorism center, our capabilities exponentially improved but that piece from Peter Doocy about over the horizon taking outer risks and terrorist threats, it is going to be different without intelligence on the ground and there are questions that remain, the last Drone Strike is in controversy after New York times report there are sources telling us thAt They think the intel was still good but theres a lot more story to be done about that last strike and who was killed. John yeah. That is a controversy that appears ready to dog the Defense Department for quite some time in the future. Bret baier, thanks very much. Bret you bet. John Breaking News out of iraq tonight. At least 3 rockets reportedly have landed near irville international airport. American forces currently are stationed there. Producer in baghdad says that sirens blared inside the u. S. Portion of the airport and local news outlets are reports that have been evacuated. We will bring you new developments as they come in. Well, the Terrorist Attacks on September 11th completely changed the u. S. Military, we will take an indepth look at how next. Tide pods Ultra Oxi one ups the Cleaning Power of liquid. Can it one up whatever theyre doing . For sure. Seriously . One up the power of liquid, one up the toughest stains. Any further questions . Uh uh one up the power of liquid with Tide Pods Ultra Oxi. Jon the attacks on this country September 11th, 2001 fundamental altered the way the u. S. Military operates. Two decades later those who served on the front lines reflect on the sacrifices made to keep america safe. National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports. Pete was Train Today fly f16s, he spent most of the last two decades of his life hunting alqaeda and led Air Campaign against crisis. On 9 11 he was a major in the Air Force one corridor from where the Plane Hit the pentagon. I sat on my desk and massive explosion i heard, Windows Chattered around me and someone opened the front Door And Smoke smarted to fill the room where finally i couldnt see where i was going. The more i was running toward the center, i was running toward the center of the wreckage. Deployed the next day to the Middle East and became part of the Weapon System that would become the Signature Piece of the war. Remotely piloted aircraft or drones which were armed for the first time after 9 11 with fire missiles, predators, reapers, surveillance became a key tool on the War On Terror. We grew that system to immense scale but 6 Combat Deployments came at a cost. My first daughter born after 4 months after 9 11. My second daughter was born 14 months after that. Multiple birthdays missed, multiple christmases missed. Im pretty sure i kept bad things from happening and defended america on their ground and keeping america safe. In 2007 he was ambushed. I was hit 8 times between the Body And Body armor, i took around directly to the Face And Fastforward about 96 hours from from the moment i found myself in the Hospital Bed in bathes de, we are thinking about amputating and feeding through a tube. A conversation full of a lot of pity. He told his wife to put a sign on the door. Attention who all that enter here, if youre coming with Sadness Or Sorrow dont worry. I will make a full recovery. This room is about fun, intense Rapid Regrowth and if youre not prepared for that, we said go elsewhere. A few had more repeated deployments than the special operations community. I know guys in the seals team. I think the record that im aware of is a guy that did 16 Combat Deployments and the toll on that is tough. We unequivocally made a difference. Again dunford and deployed to marines to iraq and rose to command all u. S. Forces in afghanistan for 2 years before becoming chairman of the joint chiefs. We were providing Insurance Policy to protect the american people from an attack. Whats happened recently in afghanistan will serve as an accelerate for extremism around the world and we l have to find a way of dealing with that. Prevented from the united states of america from being attacked again. Conflicting feelings with pain and anger, we all have it. I want everyone to know that pain and the anger and the frustration and conflicted feelings are real and i know that and i share them but i also want you to know it wasnt in vain. Your service matter. If you wore a uniform, your service mattered. At the pentagon Jennifer Griffin fox news. Jon here in New York the names of almost 3,000 names read out loud. Terry Estradas Husband and chairs 9 11 families and united for justice against terrorism. She joins us now. Terry, ive read where you say this particular day, this 20year mark is harder than the others, why . Yes. Because the realization that 20 years have gone by since my children were 7, 4 and 4 days old and now they are young adults and i miss all of that. He missed the birth of difficult times that weve had and its just an accumulation of what has been lost. Jon the organization 9 11 families and survivors united were justice against terrorism. Whats your main thrust right now . Right now we are working with the White House. President biden put out an Executive Order of several documents, all documents related to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the role thAt They played in September 11th attacks so we are patiently waiting for the first report to come out due today and the White House is drags their feet a little bit, i dont know why but im confident we are still going to get this report and learn everything that we can about the Support Network that was put in place in this country to support the attacks thAt The kingdom was involved in. Jon what do you tell your daughters about that day and their dad . One daughter, two sons. He was wonderful charismatic, heart of gold, great sense of humor and, you know, he was he would have been their champion and their cheerleader for life and maybe he still is but hes not here with us but hes always in our hearts. Jon it is a good way to carry on his memory. Kerry strada national chair of 9 11 families and survivors for justice. Jon Baseball Roger clemens remembers 9 11 and scheduled to pitch for the New York yankees and clemens will join us about his mission to help injured Service Members. Thats next. Deep to left center. This one has a chance. Home run. Mike piazza and the mets lead 3 to 2. [cheers and applause] jon iconic moments in baseball just after the 9 11 we are or the attacks. The national past time widely credited with helping america heal its pain and just about an hour from now marking the 20th year since the tragedy, the mets and the yankees take to the field in queens for game 2 of their weekend subway series. Alex hogan live at Cifi Field with more, alex. Alex hi, jon, a lot of people are walking into the stadium for the somber anniversary for those who were alive during the terror attacks. We all remember where we were. The mets were actually all together at an away tournament and came back here and after here the Parking Lot becoming Surprise Center for donations sent around the Country And Shift to workers at ground zero. Baseball returned with the team unsure if it was the right decision. Mike piazza reflecting on how that day was so much more than one game. Even though the game didnt really have playoff indications, it wasnt a Postseason Game or Wasnt World Series game. It was it had bigger bigger effect and bigger emotional value, i guess. Alex as far as the game tonight, pregame in about 30minutes time, tributes honoring all of the thousands of people who died and thousands of families who continue to mourn their loved oned, jon. Jon Alex Hogan at Cifi Field, alex, thank you. You might be hearing the Bag Pipes behind me. Bag pipers who have been part of this ceremony in lower Manhattan Today are tuning up and playing some music. Just wanted to explain that. In the meantime former New York yankees Pitcher Roger clemens was scheduled to pitch for New York on this faithful day 20 years ago and clemens dedicated his life to supporting wounded Service Members. Hes not only a 7time cy young Award Winner but recipient of the lean Greenwood Patriot Award for commitment to military heros. He joins us now, roger clemens, welcome. Jon, thank you. I would like to say thank you to all the great stories that weve been hearing throughout the day and what fox has been able to get to us and keep it in our forefront of our minds. For me, just hearing the stories from the 20yearold kids from that had lost their parents throughout all of this has been really a treat for me to hear their stories now thAt They are young adults and its something that we have to keep continuing the younger generation aware of and to hear their stories is remarkable. Jon i was in the 9 11 Memorial Museum a month or so ago and i was surprised to see how many of those in attendance were under the age of 20. It really is a powerful testament to the legacy of the people that we lost that day. Baseball and the recovery from 9 11, they are very much interconnected and you were a part of that, tell us how. Well, i was supposed to pitch in 9 11 when everything happened. I was woken by a friend of mine from a building thats not too far from the World Trade Area and we went up to the top floor and saw what had happened. We thought it was a smaller plane or an accident and then obviously within 20, 30 minutes we knew, well, it was a Terrorist Attack and we were being attacked, our nation was being attacked and Everything Kind of changed. There was a little bit of a blur. I knew that we werent going to be playing baseball. I know major League Baseball was wrestling when we should come back and appropriate time to start again and then the decision was made for us as yankees to get to chicago to play the White Sox. I know the mets, i believe the braves came into New York. A lot of players were still on edge. I alluded to earlier on a clip, Mike Piazza hit an unbelievable Home Run and really got the fans able to take a lot of the peoples minds on what was going on and back to baseball a little bit and it was just an opportunity, again, i got an opportunity to pitch against the White Sox and got My 20th Win At The time but there wasnt a dry eye in chicago either or i looked left and right to my teammates, joey, coaches, even the fans had signs of i love New York. It was incredible to see that, but, you know, when you look 20 years later, again, you hear these stories and theyre incredible stories to hear. You know, we have a saying dont dont mess with texas. I can tell you as a yankee, dont mess with yankees. I wore the jersey 22 At The yankees and not too far from where i was at we had Fire Station 22, i went to see the guys down there and they lost, they lost quite a few men from that station and when we went back after the fact, it was it was probably one of the hardest things i had to do. I took a Yankees Jersey with me to present it to the station and you could just see it in the guys eyes, not many words exchanged, a couple really firm handshakes and hugs and you just dont know whAt To say and other than thank you and really ive met so many, you know, so many cool moments. When we came back to play the World Series Game 3 in yankees stadium, President Bush 43 came out to throw out the first pitch and i think everyone have seen the video of him with Bullet Proof best throw a perfect strike down broadway and the whole place lit up. I was in the bullpen and stopped warming up and asked mel to turn around and watch. Perfect seat, 55,000 people so it was great. Jon and i know since then youve done awful lot of work with helping the hero organization. Thats one that our viewers will want to check out. Roger clemens, legendary pitcher, thank you so much. Appreciate the time. Jon we will be back. And even when things go a bit wrong, weve got your back. Here, things work the way you wish they would. And better protection costs a whole lot less. Jon as Bag Pipers from the Fire Department from the city of New York continue to commemorate 9 11. Joining us now is andrew, the president of the Fdny Uniform firefighters association. 9 11 was his first fire as member of fdny. He was inside, nearby i should say when the South Tower collapsed. You were actually in the marriott the marriott connected the north and South Tower in front of it. Thats 27, 28story hotel. Jon so this is your first fire. Newly minted 5 weeks. I was assign today harlem. We came down after the second Plane Hit and we basically came down West Street over there. We basically north overpass took everything that we could off south along West Street and charging debris and people and got separated and we got to the South Overpass and made our way in and we were in there for a while and the rest joined us and thats where the Command Post was set up and my lieutenant went over to my Battalion And Lieutenant Bob Venn Egga went over to Them And they coordinated who was going on in South Tower and who was going to marriott and to evacuate marriott in South Tower and we looked at West Street thAt The tower was behind us, we were looking on West Street and we were watching debris and people jumping and landing in front of us, ten minutes after we got in there was crack and a Boom And Poppopo and South Tower landed on top of the marriott and we started running. The windows blew in and everyone was airborne, landed in a pile of people. Some people didnt make it out of the Collapse Zone At That point in time, you know, we landed in a pile. The noise was just definite and everything just got quiet and when people started yelling looking for an Exit Screaming Names out and i made it outside to the South Overpass just southwest and my lieutenant Venn Egga gave venega gave a Roll Call and we made our way west but we didnt know that Bob Venega was buried in the pocket by the Elevator Base with two chiefs. He didnt tell us to come back and we didnt know it but 3 other members of the company were working on digging him out and 45 minutes trying to dig them out and the next big bang, he told them make a run for it and everyone that was working to get him out, they tied a rope and we spent 3 weeks following the rope and the rope eventually is hole in the basement but i still cant imagine the bravery of someone who basically he wasnt hurt, he was a Vietnam Veteran and told the guys in front of them, just get me out of here. Jon you continued your service after that first fire. Thats a credit to you, sir. Thank you. Thank you. Jon and we will be back in just a moment. We are not getting you a helicopter. Here is one from Tom Renaldi at fox sports. 20 years later we say the names, we hold the memories, we carry the legacies, how in the stories we share in the lives we honor in the promises we keep to Them And to each other for sure there is wait in memory but there is beacon in its spirit.
