[bagpipes playing Amazing Grace] [bagpipes playing Amazing Grace] will good And-welcome'>Morning And Welcome to Fox Friends as we look live at shots from lower Manhattan Ground zero just below the Freedom Tower, the site of the two World Trade Center towers 20 years to the day September 11th, 2021 after the he most notorious Terrorist Attack an our nations soil. A solemn bay but also a day as we mark for the heros to stood up that day who saved so many. Who showed us our national character. Im will cain along with Pete Hegseth And rachel camposduffy. Rachel good morning. Pete good morning. Will you were listening to the And-play'>BAnd Play Amazing Grace. Pete looking down at the nypd right over our Shoulder Mouse Terg this morning providing security for the entire set of events that are happening today all of which will cover you see right there on your screen but many of them lost brothers that day as well from the fdy or nypd. Amazing grace is a fitting way to open up the school. It is a solemn day but we also remember the heroism of so many on September 11th, 20 years ago. Rachel absolutely. So many of us want to remember that heroism. You need to remember what happened, but, really think so much about the good that came as well on that horrible, horrible day. I have never been to this Memorial Site before this area of the city before so for me its special to Do It on this kay of all days. Pete for sure. Will meanwhile, President Biden And the First Lady are here in no, as well. They arrived last night And will attend the 9 11 ceremonies today. Rachel ahead of their arrival the White House released a prerecorded address from the president paying tribute to the lives that were lost. Pete Ashley Strohmier joins us now with Joe Bidens message. Ashley . In that recorded 9 11 message to america, the president spoke directly to the families who lost Loved Ones in the attacks. America And the world commemorate you And your Loved Ones. Pieces of your soul. We honor all those who risked And gave their lives in the minutes, hours, months And years afterwards. The president went on recalling the national unity in the days And weeks following the attacks. Junt what makes us who we are, america at its best. To me, thats the central lesson of September 11th. The president will attend memorials at all three attack Sites Today in new York City. Shanksville, pennsylvania And the pentagon. Meanwhile, officials are reassuring americans in new york And across the country they will be safe. The homelAnd arising from any terrorist organization or terrorist individual. I absolutely guarantee the safety of the city tomorrow. Come out And enjoy new york. New York City Bill De Blasio promised massive resources will be deployed to protect new yorkers And visitors And the governor warned people they will see an increase of heavily armed officers around Mass Transit hubs today. Back to you guys. Will thank you so much, ashley. Rachel thank you so much, ashley. Pete you know, there are so many ways you can reflect on a day like this. And the last thing you want to do is get political And i think we are going to do right by this Show Today but at the same time it brings up questions of where you are, where were you. You know, could we react the way we reacted then as a nation. Specifically around the idea of unity And the way the nation came together after those attacks And what was not a superficial way at least first few weeks And months when people rallied around the flag And said this is our country, we will defend it. We need to come together. But you automatically sit where you are now And look back And say could we do that today . Rachel yeah. And not just united as a country but red And blue. I was in Rural Wisconsin when this happened but we all felt like new yorkers that day. The divide in america between red And blue america, reporting live And Urban America is so stark. It was interesting because Rob Oneill the man who ended up taking out Usama Bin Laden. Many of us who have gotten to meet him feel honored to actually know him said despite the events of the last few weeks And the thought that terrorism might be on the rise again And we have had, you know, White House officials actually saying that, generals saying that, thats not what worries Rob Oneill. He says the biggest concern is this division you are talking about, pete. He said my biggest concern is the division in this country. Most people are good to Each Other. There are people running out of the towers to live And there were policemen And firemen running up to die. Someone is going to be there to defend you And america should realize that. Will we should realize that And i dont think its inappropriate, pete, to put the context of today into the surroundings of our present moment, the politics, the culture, the climate of our present moment where americans turn on Each Other urban vs. Are reporting live, black vs. Blue, black vs. White, unvaccinated. Treat Each Other as greatest enemy when reality is we should be one. We should be a people that can come together, certainly support attacks And threats from the outside but also to accomplish great goals. And it is after September 11th. It was in those moments that so many realized who we are as a people. Joseph And Richard Meyersthe Cht that moment in the after this terrible attack. They laid it out On Ingraham. Watch. But if it had happened, i mean, there was a feeling in america that i never thought i would experience. Everybody was kind to everybody. They were cheering for their uniformed forces. You know, everybody was helping everybody. And its just a shame we needed a disaster for that to happen. It should be like that every day. I also think about how unified this country was right after 9 11. I had been around washington, d. C. And seen cars with american flags streaming out of them all over the city by everybody. Of course, 20 years a lot has changed for a lot of reasons. But i kind of long for that solidarity that 9 11 brought to the united states of america. Pete boy, dont we all . Rachel there was also a spiritual revival. When this happened, i think a lot of people went back to the church. There were so many stories of people not just on that day, trying to find refuge in churches around the city, but literally going back to god, returning back to god. And so many pastors And priests seeing their churches filled in the months following And i think that has a lot to do with that unity, too. I think we have become not just more disunified since then as a country, we have also become, i think, much more secular And i think the polls bear that out as well. Pete there are no atheists in Fox Holes. Everyone was in a Fox Hole in that moment. Rachel thats true. Pete you think back to September 11th, 2001, just months over they had are recount over who was the president of the united states. There were plenty of political differences in 2001, republicans, democrats And partisan swipes. What feels different 20 years later is division feels deeper. Whether the flag should be flown at all. Thats the scarier part for us in our conversation. Will, you alluded to it, could we muster as the Home Team with f. Necessary something like this or is americas view so predominant in what we teach our kids And reinforce in our media that we could or could not do that . Will well, the only way to answer that question, unfortunately . A moment of necessity. You know, comfort, And wealth, these are actually conditions that lead often for the worst to come out in people. You could indulge every single women that enters your brain. Any who are gobble thats plagued your insecurity. Fear And necessity And how are in the moment thats revealed on days like September 11th, 2001. We saw it as a nation. We saw who we are, who people can be. We saw it, honestly, in the heroes of that day. We saw the best in us. And this is what the new York Post Editorial Board had to say. They said heroes beget heroes. And not just among their own children, those who stood up on 9 11 remind americans who we are, resilient, defiant in the face of terror. United in our patriotism. This is the american spirit. The Human Spirit. Every 9 11 anniversary is a day of tremendous sadness but also one of And-gratitude'>Awe And Gratitude for so many firefighters, police And civilians who face down And-fear'>Horror And Fear to serve us all. Never forget. Pete never forget. Rachel its a great quote. Again it brings up stark differences between then And now. I think even respect for Law Enforcement And for firefighters, especially for our Police Officers has really declined in america since then. And also i think as much as we want to focus on the heroism of that day today, i do believe that the events of the last two weeks have made this anniversary more painful than it maybe had to be. And i just dont think we can deny that. Pete you cant deny that. How could it not for people looking at what has unfolded in afghanistan, the political nature, the manner in which it was ended. That does add an additional imprint. Rachel it does. Pete on People Today. No doubt about it can you hold both at the same time in saying 343 firefighters that ran up the stairs while the building was on fire, they all had wives, they all had children. They all had futures. And they chose to run up the stairs for people they never met for instance, there was absolute chaos. Who knew that those buildings could collapse . Didnt matter. The whole thing when you step back And think about it on an individual level is jarring, the courage of those first responders. Rachel it really does. One of the heroes who lost his life on 9 11 was fdn Firefighter Steven still. Will when steven heard the news of the North Tower he responded strapping his Gear On his And-racing'>Back And Racing on foot through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Pete amazing story. 20 years later his brother frank is honoring his mother with the tunnel to Towers Foundation And by finishing his never forget walk which kicked off right here on Fox Friends about a month ago. I think its so important that we never forget what happened 20 years ago. And so im walking from the three places that had such unbelievable loss of life. I got unbelievable things from my family that im wearing that were pictures of my brother right here on my right on my heart as im walking. I cant fail them. I will complete this. You can bank on it. Rachel that Picture Right on his heart, oh. Lets check in with frank along with fox Friends Enterprise Reporter lawrence jones. Lawrence. Lawrence hey, good morning, family. It is a somber mad out here today. Frank has been walking for over 500 miles across the country, taking that path. And now we are here at the spot where it all started for your brother, frank. Tell me about the emotion that you are feeling right now. Wow, it is very difficult to be here, thinking what my brother did 20 years ago. His car came to a Screeching Halt a couple hundred yards away from the mouth of the tunnel which we are right at. And eyewitness said that he got out hopped out of that car, put his Gear On, And started running right into that tunnel. And Police Officer told me afterwards that when he moved the car, he my brother had Business Cards in his car, says siler And sons. His sons were only two And a half And nine months old at that time I Cant imagine what it was like when he ran into that tunnel And didnt come out The Other Side. The whole journey i have been on the 537 miles, its definitely to honor him. It has been a personal, very personal for me this year to da it. I just wanted to make sure america never forgets what happened 20 years ago. And i think a lot of people eyes are wide open, especially with e events that just happened in afghanistan. Lawrence you know, frank, you have been on this journey over 500 miles. And you have had the opportunity to reflect about what happened that day how it changed the country forever. What do you think about the young People Today that arent aware of the ultimate sacrifice that a lot of people like your brother paid the ultimate sacrifice . Yeah. You know, i say that once again, on this walk, i had to see many young families out with their kids. 8 different parades in 8 different towns. And many times they just lined The Street. They are out there with their young kids. It gives me some encouragement that parents are telling their children what happened 20 years ago. I addressed eighth graders yesterday, seventh And eighth graders i said you guys are old enough to know the truth, you know, that islamic terrorists tried to kill as many americans as possible. They did kill 2977 of them. And many of them at the And-south'>North And South tower here when i come this tunnel on The Other Side. Look, do you know what im doing today . Im calling the widow of lance column, im going to speak Toker H im telling her that the tunnel to Towers Foundation is going to deliver her a Mortgagefree Home because its so important that we, All Of Us as americans, but most certainly tunnel to Towers Foundation And my family do something positive because we want to make sure that goodness always beats evil, thats why im going to call her And speak to her And let her know that she will always be part of the siller family. Lawrence this is the first time i have been to Ground Zero. I have lived in new york for two years. Commuted back And forth five years. This happened when i was in the second grade. And i have always avoided Ground Zero because of the emotion there. It was that day that my dad became big fan of President Bush. When he said the people i hear you, the world hears you, pretty soon they will hear from All Of Us, that was the moment that we became unified as a country And unified as a family, guys. Let me send it back to you guys. Pete it was a powerful moment. Will all right, lawrence, thank you so much. Pete thank you lawrence And frank. We will check back in with frank as he goes in the tunnel this morning completing the journey. Can you feel the emotion. Rachel, to the point you made, the donation that he just announced was for one of the marines, i believe, that was killed in afghanistan. Rachel yes. Pete you cant deny the connection to the mission that we had there And what happened in the last few weeks. And how it is tethered to the hearts of someone like Frank Siller And these families who know the truth of who attacked us, islamic terrorists attacked us on 9 11. You can try to have a revisionist And-pretend'>History And Pretend thats not the case. Its a long thread that leads from afghanistan to here. Ains. Rachel you are so right. We have him on. He looks amazing. We should go on that walk. Its the fittest i have ever seen him. He looks really healthy. He doesnt just raise money. Hes raising awareness because whether we like it or not, there is a segment of our population that doesnt want the story told. They think that its insensitive. They dont want they want to make sure that there is no blame attached to what happened there. That is absolutely happening. And there is a generation of americans who are growing up, going to school, never getting a History Lesson on 9 11. So, frank is encouraged by the families that have come out while he has been walking And thats very encouraging. But, believe me, if you are not telling your kids about 9 11, were finding out if theyre learning in school, you might be surprised i as a parent was surprised that 9 11 sometimes is not taught on 9 11 in the childrens school, And we cannot forget what happened. We just cant. Will just to bring the segment full circumstantial, what a not just beautiful gesture by Frank Siller but beautiful gesture for everyone watching at home to think about Stephen Siller to think about that heroism And his car coming to a Screeching Halt right outside the Brooklyn Tunnel And strapping on his gear And running through that tunnel And emerging on The Other Side where we are sitting this morning to destruction, to chaos, And right in the midst of all of that, one example, among hundreds, thousAnds, most likely, of heroism of climbing into that chaos. What one wonderful illustration, which will be keeping up with all throughout the morning. Pete best of america. Absolutely. We are paying tribute all morning long to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 9 11 Terrorist Attack. Our next guests both lost Loved Ones that day And join us to reflect 20 years later. Tom was a devoted And-And-father'>HusbAnd And Father who was working on the 104th Floor of the North Tower when the planes hit. Dorothy morgan 94th floor same building working at insurance company. She had spoken to her daughter any kia. Two decades later dorothy became 1,646th victim identified by d. N. A. Just this week. Dorothys Daughter Nikea And Toms Daughter joins us now. Ladies, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Good morning. Will nikea this week your mother was identified by d. N. A. Yeah. Will tell me what that feels like. Just this tuesday you got the news she was formally identified . Does that provide you what type of And-resolve'>Emotion And Resolve . It was reliving it all over again. It was very shocking, just it just brought me back to 20 years ago. Will what did it bring back . Your mother worked on the 94 of the floor. Tell me about that Phone Call. I called her every morning while she was at work And that morning we were speaking about my Sons School Supply list. My son was 4 at the time starting prek And so it was maybe 10 minutes before And since im glad i had that time, that Phone Call before. I got to tell her that i loved her. So im very happy about that. Will we are sitting here on And-terry'>Set And Terry And Ands'>Nykiah Held HAnds before we went on division. I said did you know Each Other And you said, terry, we are family. Will you shared a Phone Call that morning before the events. You spoke to your And-tom'>HusbAnd Tom that morning . I did. Right after the plane had hit he called to tell me that a plane had hit the building. I was stAnding in front of the Television Set, so i didnt see it wasnt on tv yet so i didnt know how actually horrible it was. But it was a very frantic Phone Call. A lot of panic in his voice. I could hear a lot of screaming in the background And commotion. And he said he was going to the stairwell but as i found out later, you know, the stairwells were gone from the airplane from the impact. And then it came on the Television Set within a minute after hanging up the telephone And i saw that black billowing smoke And the fire. He was on the 104th Floor. So i knew how horrific it really was. That Phone Call was both a blessing And a curse because i heard from him the last time that he was trapped And scared. Will i have asked you both about what you felt that morning, the Phone Calls you have had that morning. How does it Feel Today 20 years later to the day sitting here where were above Ground Zero . How do you feel sitting here today, terry . I also lived here for six years right across from the North Tower tom And i spent our first six years too long in manhattan while he was working on wall street. Its Coming Home A Little Bit for me. There is a lot of mixed emotions because a lot of happiness was spent here And then all that horribleness happened here, too. But i find comfort in the reflecting pools. I think the way that they did it is beautiful. Its a beautiful tribute to everyone that is gone. Im glad that they preserved the footprints of the towers but its a lot of mixed emotions. Will nykiah . This is my first time coming out here in the 20 years And speaking with terry earlier, she gave me some comfort in what i will be seeing, so im observation sighted to see the reflecting pool And see my moms name. And i will be Reading Names today. So, i feel good about it today. I didnt know how i how i was going to feel. So far im doing okay. Will what would you like people to know And remember about your mother . How wonderful she was. Caring, loving, just the comforter. And, terry, not only do i know you carried the fight for justice for what happened that day on the 20 years day. I understAnd your son your And Toms Son is serving in the united states military. Yes, my youngest was 4 days on on the 11th. At 19 he graduated from Fort Benning as a private in the u. S. Army. Im very proud of him. He has gone back to school at the university of kentucky. He is rotc And wants to have a career with the military. He wants to serve his country. Will well, And-nyky'>Terry And Nyky im so sorry for your loss but i appreciate you being here with us this morning sharing these stories with us And i want to say thank you very much. Thank you for having us. Thank you. Will for many the difficult attacks were a call to serve. You heard Terrys Son heard that call. That includes by the way as well medal of Honor Recipient Dakota meyer who was a teenager when the towers came down. He shares what today means to him. Right now tunnel 2 towers ceo Frank Siller is beginning the end of his 537mile never forget walk as he enters the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel And he heads to Ground Zero. Com hire pete the Terror Attacks on September 11th were a call to service for many of us in the military. Medal of Honor Recipient And Fox News Contributor Dakota Meyer was just 13 years old when the towers collapsed. He joined the Marine Corps five years later And deployed to afghanistan. Dakota joins us now to reflect on what this day means for Service Members, veterans across the country. Dakota, thanks so much for being here. Thank you. Pete you were 13. The attacks of 9 11, were they a motivator for you . How much did you reflect on them when you put the marine Corps Uniform on . You know, I Cant say that i joined i mean i was 13 years old. I can remember sitting in my Art Class at 13 years old. I remember them bringing in a tv. It was a tv they used to have on the stAnds. The stAnd was black And had like the strap coming over the top of it i will never forget they brought it in And i watched the second tower fall. Can i say i joined to go because of 9 11, no . Because i think without 9 11 i dont have that instinct in my heart to go serve. I mean, look, nOne Of Us forgot about it its our generations pearl harbor. It was such a significant And-moment'>Day And Moment for every single One Of Us as americans who were alive that day. Pete And your actions, i mean, the actions of so many in afghanistan were extraordinary, yours above And beyond as a recipient of the Medal Of Honor in 2009. When you look at Todays Date And what happened the last couple of weeks, are you able to reflect And appreciate or is it are you of two minds right now thinking about how we left afghanistan on this 20year anniversary . You know, look, i dont think we can wrapped around that as veterans went over And served And people who understAnd the pain of what this day represents i think we have an obligation to go out And remind people of the sacrifices that have been made on behalf of this country to stay free And what it takes to protect And to serve And to keep this country safe. I think thats what we have to do. We have to go out. Look, 9 11 is by far the worst day in modern history in the united states on our soul but 9 12 was a day that showed the world, our allies, it showed strength. It showed how united the united states of america is. People came together. All these subcategories that this great country allows us to be And to identify as And to go out And live as, we all came together as one, as american. We came together as the core of us And we represented that across the globe. And, look, the strength of the united states is something that is unchallengeable. Pete to that point of the strength of america being unchallengeable And you mentioned 9 12, do you think I Cant help but reflect these 20 years later are we creating the next generation of Dakota Meyer who look proudly at the flag And understAnd the dangerous world we live in And willing to put a uniform on And go do the dirty work of our country . Are you confident we can carry forth that ethos of fighting to defend freedom . I absolutely am. Im going to tell you why. Because i dont let politicians, i dont let school representatives, i dont let Anyone Else Put i dont rely on them to instill patriotism And doing whats right in my own children. So, i can tell you that me as a father, im instilling that in my daughters mile. Daughters look up to people in uniform. My daughters heroes arent And-basketball'>Baseball And Basketball players. Theyre the men And women who go out. First responders, people who wear the nations cloth, our Service Members, our veterans ill instilling that in them. With your question to wrap it up, i absolutely think we have the opportunity to Do It. But we have to do this as individuals And stop looking to other people around us to Do It. We have to instill in our next generation what this means because our generation, my kids hopefully hopefully my kids never see a are with a. Hopefully my kids never see attacks on 9 11 on the united states soul. I have to be able to represent that And remind them And show them what these things are without them having to see it firsthAnd, hopefully. And that is what we have the opportunity to do. So, yes, everyone watching this today, everyone going out And Hash Tagging never forget. Its not a hash tag. Its a way of life. Living And stAnding up for whats right is not easy. Its a way of life And it is what well it is what will decide what our future of the united states of america is. Pete so well said. What we honor, what we hold up is a reflection of what we value And ultimately that is on parents to pass it to that next generation. Dakota, thank you so much for Everything Youve done in the 20 years since And for helping us remember today on 9 11. Thank you. Pete appreciate it. Thank you. But the survivors And witnesses of the tragic events that unfolded will forever remember the images that they saw that day. Photographer Phil Penman who was on the scene joins us with leslie has kin who was in her office on the 36th Floor of the North Tower when the Plane Hit. Im going to start with you, phil. Youre a photographer. You were doing what you do. You heard what was happening. You ran down to the scene. You started taking photographs. The first question i had did you know you were in danger by getting so close . Good morning. To be honest, pretty much very unaware that you become like you are taken to another place. You kind of there is that moment where youre photographing people And you dont know if you can go through with it because you are seeing people at their weakest hour. You know, when it was all going down, it was very surreal. I was looking up at the building photographing the flames coming out And all of the sudden the building just you hear this rumble And its coming down And you are looking through the View Finder And just seeing the shards of the building getting closer And closer. And you are totally, you know, you are completely unaware until you see that its coming closer And closer to you. I was about a City Block And for me like firemen run past me And like run, run, run. And i ran into a Music Store that was right behind me. Rachel it was there that you ended up meeting someone, correct, that was you had this close relationship with that person since then. Tell us about that. Yeah. A lot of the people that i photographed that day, like i have since reached out to, you know, there is a friend of Mine Joanne who i photographed on that day, And we reunited after connecting the 9 11 museum, And she i actually photographed her wedding about 17 years later, which was nice. And then i was with her the weekend. There is a lot of the people that i photographed that day i have since met with or, you know, i stayed over at their house, you know, had dinner with them. You know, its been if i was to say anything nice that came out of this it was the connection that i made from the people that i photographed that day. Rachel absolutely. You were with her probably definitely on her worst day And on her best day. Leslie, you were on the 36th Floor in that North Tower, you lost 22 friends that day. You suffered through very severe pssd. Tell us about that day And also, i think so many people think, you know, it happened And dont really understAnd how long people carry that trauma with them. , yeah. You are right. I think from the moment the Plane Hit the building, we knew that it was only a matter of time because we heard the explosion. We felt the impact of it. And the building shook so violently And never really righted itself. Imagine going building it narrow And filled with smoke And seeing people And hearing people screaming And being burned alive, And when we came out of the building was where most of the jumpers were. So its been 20 years of remembering that And hearing those sounds again. I will never forget the sound of that building coming down. I will never forget the sound of people screaming And looking for help And those brave firemen who risked their lives And really gave their lives to go up those stairs to help some of my friends. Rachel yeah. Its just, as you describe it, i just cant even imagine. You say that what got you out of this was god. Tell us. Absolutely. It was after 9 11 And i, my son talked to me about something that he heard in school. He went to a Christian School at the time. And he was talking to me about a scripture that he learned in school. And for some reason, it resonated with me. And i just went to the lord that night And just prayed And said i dont love you because i dont know you. But if you really are the god that my mother said you were, if you really are the god that my father preached about, then im going to need you to be bigger than this event for me. And i went on a journey then of discovering who god is And learning who i am And the strength that god are each of us in the Human Spirit to really be able to overcome. Rachel wow. What a message. He is bigger than the evil of that event. And what happened that day And people caused that leslie, phil, thank you so much for sharing that with us. Powerful. Thank you for having me. Thank you very much. Rachel all right. The live look at the pentagon. The american flag was just unfurled to remember lives lost on 9 11. Up next, two sisters were inside the Pentagon Day Care center 9 11 attack And now both in the u. S. Military. How heroic acts from that day inspired them to serve. With Dexcom G6, i dont have to prick my fingers anymore. This little wearable sends my Glucose Numbers straight to my phone. You can see your number And where its heading. And i get alerts before i go too high or before i go too low. The Dexcom G6 has helped me lower my a1c. Pete moments ago, the Pentagon Unfurling The American flag as we remember the victims of the September 11th attack. Rachel our next guests are two sisters who were in the defense departments Day Care Center when the flight crashed into the building. Will both of them are now serving their country in the military. Hanna born joins us now with her Sister Midshipman in the naval Academy Class of 2023 heather bourne. Thank you so much your story is inspiring. I know both of you have been inspired by the events that happened that day September 11th, 2001. Hanna, i would love to start with you. I believe you were 3 years old so you have more memory of that day. Tell us what you remember as a 3yearold in the Day Care Center at the pentagon. Since i was so young most of my memories are a bit fragmented where i have bits And pieces that i remember quite vividly And then others that are a bit more blurry on my timeline. But, i think the common thread among most of them is an overwhelming sense of confusion as i struggled to process what was happening like many did that day. And on top of that justesen sorry overload sights And sounds of that day. Anyone regardless of how young or old you are or how many years have passed since then, when you have that type of sensory experience its a memory that never leaves you. Rachel yeah. I think about your parents they werent in the building when this happened. And, you know, i know you guys are grateful that your parents werent in the building when it happened. But, at the same time, I Cant imagine what they were thinking knowing that their little babies, their little girls were in that Day Care Center. You also describe how they wheeled cribs out of there, people that you dont know, And put you guys into safety And that that inspired you. Does that have to do with why you decided to enter into the military . Absolutely. I think, i mean, i was too young at the time to remember the events of 9 11 but since my sister And my family have shared stories And thats what inspired us to serve And i know this is just our story but its a nations story. And on top of that, the people who moved those cribs And moved us to safety at love them we dont know their names that speaks to their character. They did it out of the goodness of their heart never looking for recognition. Thats another piece that has inspired us over the years. Pete you inspire us this morning from there on the pentagon that day, your family of military service, Hanna Born now a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force And Heather Born will be commissioned in 2023, a legacy of service. Thank you for sharing that story this And-everything'>Morning And Everything you do. Thank you. Will straight ahead. Were actually in Lower Manhattan today marking, commemorating the 20 years since 9 11. You will hear the bagpipes in the background. That is the new Jersey State Police bAnd performing the Air Force song Into The Wild Blue Yonder on fox square. Welcome, will. Will thank you so much. Rachel welcome pete. Pete good morning. Rachel amazing day. I told you i have never been to this part of the city as many times as i have been here in new York City. And it is really amazing to see that tower And the images of the pool there. Pete 100 percent. We have the bagpipes there on fox square. Rachel moving. Pete some here right now. One of those days in new York City where throughout the day if you are here, you are going to hear those bagpipes And that sound it shakes you to your core. Rachel yeah. Pete it signifies the And-emptiness'>Aloneness And Emptiness of the people not here 20 years later, the 343 firefighters not to mention Law Enforcement, civilians And others. There is a shot of it here in Lower Manhattan. Ceremonies going on small And large before the larger ones that happen today where Joe Biden will be here And other dignitaries. But, every single fire hall. Every single police station, every single community remembering different people on this day And we do, too. Will its a And-honor'>Privilege And Honor to be able broadcast live from this moment And this location this morning. Its hard to maybe translate across the television screen. As you sit here And in the segments that were not on television And i lean my elbows on this railing And look out over Ground Zero what was the site of the World Trade Center, its hard to communicate the sense of awe that you feel. You just take a moment in a quiet moment And look out over this. You do feel what was lost. You do feel so much, i dont know, presence of so many things. Of course, the people that were lost but, also, the prayer, the faith, the principles, what this nation stAnds for. Its all here. Its all somewhere in between these buildings. And you truly do feel it when you are in person. Rachel i dont know, just sitting here hearing the bagpipes you dont have to be irish get emotional hearing that its just so powerful And, again, as somebody who has never been here before, its it how close everything is, And you just cant imagine. I really cant imagine what happened in this tight space with all these buildings around. Im really in awe. Pete were going to talk to Eric Shawn in a moment when the plane flew over his head set the scene of that day. You mentioned all those adjectives that describe it. All of them are correct. Its the And-dignity'>Honor And Dignity the reverence that you feel of this place the people here to ho knew someone who was lost. Look at the sky that day beautiful crisp air Blue Sky Tuesday Morning in manhattan. Everyone going to work as they always did. And it has that same Feel Today a beautiful day but we are a long Side View taking it all in remembrance not just the sacrifice And there was a lot of it. But the Shear Heroism And courage. Some people, including at the pentagon And on Flight 93 when those courageous men charged the cockpit And took that thing down saying lets roll in the first Counter Attack in this long war. Rachel there were courageous people on the ground. And one of them was Frank Sillers brother. Frank is right now in the final stretch of his 537mile never forget walk as we watch him finish his walk in brooklyn, the battery tunnel, the same tunnel his Firefighter Brother Stephen Siller ran through on 9 11. There he is. And we are going to be speaking with him a little later about this emotional journey. Pete that gives me chills knowing frank And his core. Rachel I Cant imagine. Pete his love for his brother And his family And his memory. He cant walk half a block in new York City without being thanked And loved by firefighters, And Police Officers because of his dedication And to think about walks going through his mind as he walks the steps of his very brother 20 years ago. It was his day off. He didnt have to come in. He was on his way to play golf. He heard about it And threw his Gear On an ran through that tunnel. Frank is watch walking the final steps. Will shanksville And here to new York City. Frank is walking from the Brooklyn Side the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel emerging into new York City. Again, the same walk, his brother performed. He was on earlier describing that situation where in his Brother Car came to a Screeching Halt on the Brooklyn Side of that tunnel, he strapped on his gear And ran through that tunnel to here, Lower Manhattan, where the World Trade Center towers had just been attacked on September 11th, 2001. As you mentioned, pete, we will talk to pete in just moments. But, as eemerges in Lower Manhattan, i would be fascinated to know whats going through his mind hes walked the same walk that his brother did 20 years ago today. Rachel to think about what was going true his brothers mind. He had two young children as you mentioned. Will five. Rachel five, im sorry. To think that you have these children And youre not you are just going forward trying to help people putting that at front of mind. I mean, the pictures of his brother, so young, so hAndsome. Again, i agree. Im feeling for frank right now. You i can see that this is an emotional moment for him. Pete emblematic of so many on that day. I love what you said earlier on the program, rachel. I was in Rural Wisconsin but we were all new yorkers that day. Rachel we were. Pete certainly the sentiment of the country And what those heroic first responders did frank is representing now lives in our hearts still today. I mean, to run up those stairs. When you knew you probably facing certain death, to save people you didnt know in entirely chaotic situation. Here is frank right now emerging from the tunnel. It is his foundation is tunnel 2 towers And that is the first part of it coming out of that tunnel where his Brother Stephen had come out. Hearing a little bit of frank right now. Holding family. All about family for him And everybody else out here. People they are missing And remembering. Rachel frank talked so much how important it is to him that young people, children, learn this story. They dont always know whats happening because, as you know, the story of 9 11 isnt always told in school but here is frank surrounded by children And families who are commemorating this remarkable day, a day that i think has been made all the more painful because of the events of the last few weeks. Will once you emerge from that tunnel into Lower Manhattan you are struck as a tourist or new yorker how tight everything is, how close everything is. Lower manhattan is not a large geographic place. You are quickly in the midst of towering buildings. You are quickly close to the World Trade Center. You are quickly close 20 years ago to this day to where it all went down. Lawrence jones is down there. He will catch up with frank in just a little bit. We will talk to frank about the emotions he is feeling as he walks the statement walk his brother Stephen Siller did. For now our next guest was in new york 20 years ago on the morning that everything changed. The first plane flew right over him before it crashed into the north World Trade Center towers. Fox news senior correspondent anchor Eric Shawn who joins us now. Eric, glad to have you with us this morning. I think the appropriate place to start is tell us what you remember, what you thought that morning, September 11th, 2001. Good morning on this very meaningful, deeply meaningful And special day. Its been 20 years but, you know, it seems as if not one day has gone by. That morning, a beautiful Blue Sky new yorkers called the September 11th sky was walking to work at Fox News when the first plane, american Airlines Flight 11 flew over my head. I remember it was low. It was loud. I looked up And that image of that plane is forever cedar in my memory. It was flying like this, very they call it crabby which is going sideways, aviation parlance. And it came over And it banked to the right slightly as it went right over my head And then disappeared over the building line. That was when Mohammed Atta directly was directing toward the World Trade Center. Frank siller is coming out. This is live right now. We have been showing frank And his walk there is frank come out of the Brooklyn Battery live here on the Fox News channel just blocks from the World Trade Center. You can see the group around him. This is just absolutely amazing. The story of his brother Stephen Volunteering that morning, walking through the tunnel, just what i remember it. What is so more meaningful And important of this day is what we are seeing right now live here on the Fox News channel. The love, the caring, the dedication, the selflessness, humanitarianism of all those people like Stephen Sill his or her gave of themselves And sacrificed themselves unknowingly for the greater good of this country. Running into the towers. Running to the damage And the death And the destruction. I came down here later on that day on September 11th, And i will forever remember the Smell Smell the sights the dust that was overwhelming. There was Metal Taste And smell that permeated manhattan. You couldnt get rid of it that went on for weeks And weeks. And months. When i went on the air immediately on the Fox News channel, i basically figured Usama Bin Laden And the alqaeda terrorists as the perpetrators of this. Lets not pretend otherwise. This was islamic terrorism striking at the very heart of our democracy And what this country represents. The first islamic Terrorist Attack against us occurred here in manhattan in 1990. That was the assassination of 48 And Lexington Avenue the Marriott Hotel giving a speech, shot by a follower of the blind sheikh. Three years later there was the bombing of the World Trade Center by that same group. And there was Andmark-plot'>LAndmark Plot to bomb lAndmark new York City. They werent successful in bringing the towers down 1993. Ramsey yousef promised to come back And Do It again And they did. This is islamic terrorism. The threat was then much the threat remains now, especially with the Taliban Takeover In Afghanistan And as a born And raised new yorker And Proud American, it is our duty And our solemn vision of our country to fight against islamic terrorism that killed so many people on this day 20 years ago, a generation ago. And are still taking lives. You have got to remember more people have died from that Dust Cloud And toxins than were killed on that day. 4627 people have died. There are 60 cancers that have been identified, 67,000 people who were exposed to that dust have Breathing Problems from asthma And copd, the bronchitis including this reporter having been here from that we have a lasting personal legacy whether you are a new yorker or not from what happened here. We will never forget. We will never forgive. That is our duty as americans as i stAnd Here Today A Generation 20 years later. Rachel eric, you know, it was the deadliest Terror Attack in human history. Im so curious hearing your story at what point, you know, you saw the Plane Go Over your head. At what point did you realize okay, this is definitely a Terror Attack . I know there were some people that, you know, when the first plane went through, they, you know, they thought it was an accident, something went wrong, you know, with the plane. At what point did you i know you are a reporter, you probably have a different sense about things. Yeah. When i saw the Plane Go Over, you know, your mind plays tricks in that i was looking at it thinking that wow, he is really low. And i was thinking that he couldnt clear the it tenth Plaza Building where Rush Limbaugh used to broadcast his show from above Penn Station because he was so low. You are thinking no, its from laguardia coming out from the north. Is he going to make a left And left to go into laguardia. It was when i arrived at the station And saw the towers burning And i ran down to the Assignment Desk And when i heard Vernon Gross was on our air probably a small plane lost in The Sun And saysna. I ran out into the newsroom i said no, i saw the plane it was a jet liner, i thought it was a 737. No, And i went right on the air knew right away it was a Terrorist Attack. Flying an airliner into a building is a Terrorist Attack And certainly when the second one hit i already knew. Look, i have covered this terrorism in this city for well, Will Fourth Generation now. They always newcome back we are a target whether its in this city. It is this country. They hate us. Its as simple as that they hate what we stAnd for. And they always wanted to try to return And this sadly was that momented that i been dreading for years, not only what happened but realizing immediately because it was an airliner this was no accident. Pete eric, i really appreciate your clarity, your cAndidness about the reality of the threat we face, who it is, say the name, be honest about it. I think your both And-understAnding'>Reporting And UnderstAnding of the issue but also having been there, keeps it raw And visceral for you. Do you feel like we are remembering that the way we ought And need to considering the fact that we still live in a very dangerous world . Sadly, no. I think we have been lulled into a sense, pete, a sense of comfort And security, Law Enforcement, federal, state, local, new York City Police Department talking to the commissioner early this morning. Magnificent job protecting this nation since then. Buff the threat still exist. Its always been there. And now im concerned personally And professionally im concerned for our nation because of the takeover of afghanistan by the taliban. Make no mistake. Alqaeda is there. Make no mistake. It is a Terrorist State. You cannot negotiate with a Terrorist State that wants to attack us. And that is my deep feeling And our sense that we have to be on guard again. You must never let our our god down And we should not And we have to remember And always call out happened here 20 years ago that it was not something that was politically correct. It was islamic terrorism aimed at us And if you want to a reminder of that i would advise all of our viewers come to new york And visit the museum. The 9 11 Memorial Museum And also go to the Tribute Museum run by the families if you want to seat personal impact of islamic terrorism And the toll it has taken against us. The cost was so great. But we will bear any price, i hope, to face it. Will Eric Shawn, thank you so much for sharing your And-clarity'>Story And Clarity And now with us this morning. Pete great stuff. As eric was talking, we continue to monitor franks walk. He is getting closer And bagpipes as we mentioned still playing. Rachel still playing. Will there he is. Pete coming into view of our location. We leaning over our shoulder he is back i believe. Rachel is that him right there . Pete if you were to take our shot our our shoulder, frank is walking right past our Location Led in by bagpipes And a growing group of people following him as he walked straight by an Fdny Memorial where they have been preparing. Now we understAnd for his arrival a portion of it And if you see walk in through that location right now. Rachel wow. Amazing. Amazing footage. Pete again a testament to what frank is doing in remembrance that, you know, this is something fully embraced by the fdny. This is not him doing his own thing. This is the institution And the organization of Law Enforcement embracing the Towers Effort it is such a commitment on this day frank is the ringleader. Yeah. The idea of tunnel to tower is to give housing And Mortgagefree Homes to people from not just 9 11 but all of our first responders And military the situation but he is actually also constantly bringing our attention back to 9 11 And what happened there that day because we just can never forget, as he always says. Will quite a shot. Will there is the Shot Share with you some of the context. This is across The Street from the World Trade Center plaza from what now stAnds the Freedom Tower. The tower the nation built taller And bigger than the one knocked down by islamic extremists some 20 years later. There is Reception Line of fdny firefighters receiving franks, his family right there. As he ends his walk, 537 miles from the pentagon to shanksville, pennsylvania, the site at Ground Zero where his Brother Ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel And climbed into these towers And gave his life. A Act Of Heroism that he was not alone in on that day. Frank is there to represent not just his brother but all those who gave their lives And continue to give back And help those who served this country. Rachel an Act Of Heroism he didnt have to do. Again, he was on his day off. He was going golfing but he saw the need. He jumped out of his car And ran through those tunnels. Pete so true. You talk about the rebuilding. And rebuilt an even taller building adjacent to the location And intentionally built it 1776 feet tall. 1776 is the height of the Freedom Tower that we can see over our shoulder right now which looms over this very ceremony, again, to your point, will, how tightly packed Lower Manhattan is. Its not a big place. And its a reminder of the devastation of that day but also maneuvering people in And out, evacuation efforts. And that fire hall, right . There is one right around the corner from that location as well is where such a substantial loss of life obviously was as first responders came rushing in. Were going to get back to were going to continue to cover frank. We are going to be speaking with him in just moments as the ceremony continues. But, up next, 9 11 first responder buried under the rubble for 13 hours is reuniting. One of the officers who helped save his life. Both of them join us next to share their stories ahead of the 20th anniversary. This is the tempurpedic breeze. And its mission is to make sleep feel cool. So, no more night sweats. Along with one of the officers who helped Safe Him Nypd Emergency Service unit on 9 11 scott straus. Gentlemen, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Thank you. Will here we are we sit here 20 years later officer jimeno tell us feel about 13 hours. Today im a Proud American who able to be here with scott And led the operation with And-shrika'>Mcgee And Shrika to be the survivor And tell the world of the good of that day not the bad the as americans we came together, as the world we came together And as a survivor im able to be here to represent the Police Officers. Nypd officers. And i want america to know never go going to bring us to our knees as far as that evening it was horrific. I dont wish this to happen to anybody else. You know, we were the only two to be found And survive from underneath the World Trade Center which is a michelle. I think its a testament to the american spirit, who we are what we are about. I know we have been through a lot of tough times this past year. But we are americans. And i came from a different country. And i just believe we are going to overcome all the challenges set before us. And on that day the cowards, the terrorists lost. We, the good people won. Will you heard will talk about that testament, that spirit inside of us And what was represented quite honestly embodied by you And fellow rescuers that day. Tell us about the spirit that helped drive you that morning to find will . Two marines found him And myself And many other Emergency Service Unit officers from the nypd jumped on the pile And started digging as fast And furious. It took a tremendous amount of time to get will out. Sergeant mclaughlin out the next morning. But past that the spirit that the united states shown as one And gave to us let everybody down here at Ground Zero. Everybody down at pennsylvania that we werent alone. And the washington, d. C. The entire country was one. We were united And there was nothing that was going to stop us then. Will yeah, im thankful you mentioned those two marines by the way. Two marines private citizens in their alternative life they were working one of them in And-trophy'>Connecticut And Trophy down, volunteered to come down And search the debris, search the pile And ended up finding you. You know, will, that moment that 13 hours, that moment of hope, you know, you both are mentioning the positive, the feeling that drives you forward. Drives you forward 0 years later. Do you see something . In that one moment that day that still carries forward to this day an emotion that you have from that day that you think the one you still see here today . Its love. You know, when i tell everybody when we were in between the towers, i saw a long line of civilians helping Each Other. They came from different background, different skin colors, ethnicity. Im sure political views. But on that day We Saw the worst in humanity but the best in humanity. Im proud to tell future generations as a survivor remember September 11th for the good of it, not the bad of it. Thats how we are going to overcome any challenges in this country. Remember, the american flag is not made out of cloth. Its made out of blood of patriots. On September 11th we lost a lot of patriots. First responders, common citizens who came together And i believe in america. I love america. And were going to overcome anything ahead of us. As per the terrorists, they will always lose. Will your thoughts 20 years later . When i think back to that day 20 years ago, myself, patty mcgee, all of our fellow Emergency Service cops down there that day we were ready to give up anything And everything. Our Loved Ones, our lives to do what we had to bring Everybody Home as many people as we could. Shining light as we helped john And will out And we wish we could have saved more. But the best thing that we can do is live our lives the way our friends who died that day wanted us to live. And do the best we can for the public, do the best we can for the city of new york. And do the best we can for our families. Will gentlemen, scott, will, im proud to share this set with you this morning. Im proud to share It Country with you. I want to let everybody know that if you want to do something good today, go to 9 11 day. Org. Its an organization that if you feel like many of americans did that day, that they need to do something good on 9 11 day. Org it will help you do something for your community And thats the way we help people to remember September 11th. Will thank you both very much. Thank you. Will all right, now go back live to pictures of Frank Siller as he finishes his never forget walk. Lawrence jones is with him right now. Lawrence . Lawrence good morning, family. Frank just finished that walk And he is surrounded by Loved Ones, people in the community that feel the impact of this And here some younger. Frank, i want to bring you back, in earlier today when i talked to you i said how are your joints feeling you . Just completed that walk And you said today is all heart. There is a physical aspect of this is over but the heart. Talk about that. All i was thinking about was my brother, of course. And i mean, who does what he did . Right . Throws his Gear On his back And runs for that tunnel. I was walking through there with my family that i love so much. And i was thinking of his face so vividly And his bald head And his smile. And i will tell you i know he was running there And he had one thing on his mind to help And to save. And he gave it all that day. And firefighters we lost 343 firefighters, the name of every one of them are on this wall, lost 60 Police Officers. They gave their lives that day. We lost 2977. But all those first responders, they gave their life by running in that building And saving over 20,000 people. My brother was part of that he will always be remembered as the firefighter who ran through the tunnel And gave up his life to help others. Lawrence exactly right. Talk about unity. How do we get the country back to where we were that day. We didnt care about how people looked, what religion they were associate with. We cared about them being americans And we wanted to honor the people that gave the ultimate sacrifice like your brother. How do we get back there. Its very simple. It starts at the level of schools that they got to teach that we love america. That america is the greatest country that ever existed. Why . Because we have men And women in uniform that are willing to die every single day for our freedom, for our liberty so we can go out And live the great life. The best life of anywhere And our Police Officers And firefighters they give us the security inside our communities. Without that, we dont have a society. And i think it starts at that level. You start at that level, you pay the respect of these great Human Beings that are willing to risk everything for us, you will start appreciating what you have as a family, the freedom that you have. And thats where it starts. Did i see that through my walk. I saw it. I saw families coming out. They were waiving the flag. They say never forget, frank, never forget, frank. And they were walking with me. And its very inspiring with you its very hopeful. I see a lot of hope in this country. And when we lost our 13 great Military Personnel just recently, everybody in america was upset. Everybody. And thats the beauty of america when it comes right down to it, we care about Each Other And it really comes down to it. Lawrence if your brother was here today, what would he say . I know what he would say first because he was a bit of a buster. He would say, frank, george, mary, gina, janice, russell, come on. Will you guys do something . And And then he would put his arm around us And say thank you not just for remembering him but all his brothers And sisters And all those that gave their life. Lawrence you took a tragedy And turned it into something good. You are going every single day helping those that we have lost in the line of duty. Police officers, firefighters, as well as our soldiers as well making sure they dont have to pay for the mortgage. That their family doesnt have to worry about how they are going to get their next meal. Talk about that. That is why we are successful. We have simple mission. First, never forget this was a never forget walk. Then its to honor. And we honor by doing this, by coming together. And then its to do good. Saint francis said brothers And sisters while we have time let us do good. That is what we live by. Thats what my family lives by. That is why from the very beginning we decided that we are not going to stay in a bad place that we are going to crush that evil And do good. And not just stephens name but the name of all these great heroes that day. And to build houses for our catastrophically injured Service Members. To say pay off mortgages for Gold Star families, including lance corporal mccollums family, to take care of Police Officers And firefighters. Police officers, instead of people spitting on the ground they should kiss the freakin ground that they walk on because they give us, once again, the life that we have. Tunnel to Towers Foundation is simple mission. But its so important. Thats why people join us because they know theyre their money is going to do good. Lawrence exactly right. A lot of people talk about it, but you guys are being about it And putting your money where your mouth is people in the country, thats why they decide to give to you. Frank, we are with you today. We are praying with your family. It is raw emotion out here. Thank you so much for what you do for the country. Guys, im going to send it back to you guys in new york. As i said it is raw emotion out here. There is a lot of love as well. It feels good that the country is acknowledging what happened this day. And honoring those Service Members that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Send it back to you guys. Pete absolutely, lawrence. Looking down on you right now. We can see the ceremony. Rachel we can see you behind us. Pete over our shoulders, powerful word from frank And i know his brother is looking down on him right now. Rachel i love so much of what he had to say. He said it so simple teach the kids to love america. We have, you know, back if you remember on 9 11, the flag was not controversial. We didnt have two national anthems. We were united under one flag, one anthem. And so, its a reminder that we have a lot of work to do. We actually have a lot of work to do. And bringing about that unity. Pete instead of spitting at Police Officers we should be kissing the ground they walk on. Rachel amen. Pete what they do for us. Powerful stuff. [bagpipes] [bagpipes] Pete Welcome back as we mark 20 years since the Terrorist Attack on 9 11. And that is the new Jersey State Police bAnd performing to Army Song on fox square. Beautiful. Grateful for them being with us all morning long. We also remember the And-selflessness'>Courage And Selflessness of the men And women on united Airlines Flight 93. It crashed to the ground in shanksville, pennsylvania after the group of passengers stormed the cockpit preventing the plane from reaching the u. S. Capitol, its presumed target. Richard was on that flight returning home after celebrating his grAndmothers 100th birthday party. He dedicated his life to protecting wildlife And the environment. His Cousin Colonel Chris Wheelen joins me now from the Crash Site in shanksville. Colonel, thanks so much for being here. By the way, on that day you were a Ander'>Company CommAnder in the 101st Airborne And you knew we were suddenly now on a war footing. Did you know how that the first Opening Salvo Flight 93 that your cousin was on it And piece to me piece together for me, if you would, how you learned about the events of that day. I spent that day with my work stop. Company commAnd meetings so the other events of 9 11 occurring, we kind of watched throughout the day, the morning And then later in the day, much later, when i was heading home, my father had called me And told me that my wifes cousin, My Second Cousin Richard had been on that flight. Until then, i had no idea. Pete so you didnt know you had family on that flight. And then once you learned that, you know, we have i have heard some stories about Flight 93, the story of todd beamer, lets roll. How do you piece together what happened on that plane that has frankly inspired some over these years . To me, i think, there were stories about those who made Phone Calls. I dont think In The End those Stories Matter as much as the entire group, all 40 collectively made a decision. We will never really know exactly what happened on Flight 93. What we know is 40 people stopped a terrible act from happening And all of them collectively are heroes together. Pete absolutely. Tell me about your cousin, richard, if you would. Richard, i didnt know him really well because i was a bit younger than him. But from what i understAnd a lover of the environment like myself. I love outdoors stuff. Someone who gave his life for his career in wildlife with the government as i had done with the military. Also someone who had a lot of passion, whether it was gardening or playing music. In fact, he built his own guitars to play on. He loved to cook. So whatever richard did he did to the fullest. And that is such an inspiring thing on its own above And beyond the actual events of the day. Pete no doubt. Colonel, i presume as a Ander'>Company CommAnder you were a captain on that day. How did it change your life . Reflect on the 20 years as a service member. I came in the military before 9 11. I didnt expect to have much of my career caught up in the events of that. While that is important And has shaped my career. I think today is really about 9 11 And the civilians a all three locations And not the events since then. Pete you are in shanksville, pennsylvania, sir, a site that sometimes is overlooked. It shouldnt be. And hopefully this segment helps remind people of the heroism of Flight 93. All those amazing Souls On Board who collectively as you said made a decision to fight back And saved a lot of lives as a result. Colonel chris whelan, thank you for sharing your And-story'>Service And Story this morning. Thank you. Pete You Got It today we remember the fallen heroes who ran through the towers 20 years ago. Just, first of all, welcome to all of you, i am going to start with you, christopher what is behind you . Tell me about these flags And where you are at. Behind me is 403 crosses, 47 crosses for the Police Officers killed, 343 for the firemen killed And another 23 for the Nypd Officers that were killed. Each one has their name on it And where they worked And where they were assigned. Rachel christopher, tell me a little bit about your father. So, my dad was pretty humble guy. He didnt know a lot about what he did at work until after he was already gone And setting up this memorial And having his coworkers come, i had 10 guys that worked with me last year. Worked with them last night. They like to tell stories about a bit of a Ball Buster And really good at his job. He loved to train. He loved to do the job. And he loved helping people. Thats what he was all about. Rachel is that what inspired you to also follow in his footsteps . 100 percent. I just wanted to learn more about how he did things. I became a fireman. He was a cop. I think he would still be okay with my career choice. Rachel are tell me about your dad. My dad pretty similar description. A humble man. Hardworking. Really loved what he was doing ago a firemen And loved his family. Rachel how old are you when this happened . I was 20 years old. How is the way he died, the day he died how how has that impacted your own life choices . I think he definitely set a bar almost like expectation. Just his passing. All the firefighters And cops passed. It gives you almost like expectation of whats expected of you on the job. Helped me personal life start a family And take care of my kids And. Rachel do the right thing. Rachel I Cant imagine of course, its going to have that impact on you. Robert, your situation a little bit different. Your father had health related illness because of the 9 11 towers coming down And toxic things that happened after. Tell us about his journey And also what he was like, also how important it was he was speaking for so many others that suffered long after from these illnesses. Yeah, i mean, he responded to the World Trade Center that day. I never thought many years later it would end up taking his life from breathing in all the toxins in the And-asbestos'>Air And Asbestos pulverized glass the reason he was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in 2015, And unfortunately he is not here with us today. But, very fortunate to follow in his footsteps And make him proud And, you know, he was a guy that loved to be spending time with his family And he always laughed And he always wanted to help people. Thats what he did. He wasnt to washington, d. C. To get the bill refunded And extended. Took many trips until he was in a wheelchair until the very end. Rachel its bittersweet you didnt lose him on that day but he did. Going to washington And using his story to do that. Tell me about your own journey And how your Fathers Legacy has impacted your journey. As a man. Well, he was a firefighter. And i ended up following in his footsteps And becoming a fireman And i work in brooklyn. Im very happy to follow in his footsteps. Even after he passed, too i took several trips down to washington, d. C. , you know, help get the bill refunded And extended. Rachel right. I Cant Help but looking at all of you And going i know your dads are proud of you. What does today, its 20 years since it happened, the last two weeks have been pretty rough, i think, for the whole country, probably especially for survivors men like you. What does today mean to you. 20 years this Year Today feels like 20 years. I cant say it went so fast anymore. I think being close to the site, its definitely a reminder of sacrifice And what has gone on the past 20 years from firemen, cops, medical will field of finding each person killed in the Trade Center And never giving up until we found every one of them. I think is a very good place to symbolize what americans do to find americans i find things need to be relearned. Rachel there are some lessons we need to keep learning. To both of you, i want to thank you And also, christopher, thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you. [bagpipes] [Amazing Grace] [bagpipes playing Amazing Grace] Pete Today is september the 11th, year of our lord, 2021. 20 years ago about this moment, almost one minute ago flight 11 took off from Boston Logan headed for manhattan for all the wrong reasons. Today we remember all the heroism of that day 20 years later as you look at a flag unfurled. Live shot at the pentagon And we, rachel campos duffy, will cain And myself are down in Lower Manhattan this morning recognizing remembering. And that rendition of Amazing Grace performed by the new Jersey State Police bAnd. It is, i know i speak on behalf of my cohost here, its an absolute honor to be down here this morning remembering, talking with, praying for all the souls that were involved in what happened that day And making sure the country we never forget. And i did look down at my phone a moment ago guys And realized that flight took off a minute ago 20 years ago from Boston Logan. They thought they were headed they thought they were headed to los angeles. Instead, 47 minutes later they would crash into the North Tower here. So Convenience Unfolding in realtime 20 years ago. Rachel yeah. Its just really hard. This is my first time being in this part of the city. Its hard to believe what happened here in this very cramped quarters of the city And what people. Images of the people running with the big huge dust piles behind them . There is something about being here that helps you visualize it, you know, better And, of course, you know, the emotion is just amplified by those bagpipes that playing for us. Will it really is meaningful to be here. Our job is to translate what we see, what we feel in some cases what we think into words. I ratherred off a list of adjectives earlier in the show. But i think the ones you have shared with this morning are the right ones, humbling, its an honor because of the sense of awe And maybe its the scale maybe it is tight cramped quarters. All Emotions Place one And-pride'>Moment And Pride the Freedom Tower that stAnds today taller than the ones that islamic extremist knocked down 1776 feet to represent what they attempted to take down in this country And failed because part of that And-part'>Awe And Part of those feelings is who we are. We have been trying to share stories all morning long of the people that stepped up. Those are the people not just who we lost that we honor today, obviously, but those who stood up And embodied our values And who we are. We lose sight today. We fight Each Other, we are divided. We question who we are. Not when you stAnd here. Not when you remember 20 years ago today. Rachel nonetheless though we spoke with Rob Oneill earlier And he says that despite the fact that many of us, many of our experts in our government And generals believe that terror is on the rise probably because all the circumstances that have happened surrounding our very disastrous withdrawal from afghanistan the events of the last two weeks. Unity is the biggest challenge our country faces. And as i sit here And i think about all the things you are saying And i agree 100 percent. There is something if you are alive And old enough to remember all of this, on 250250, 20 years ago as i was on 9 11, you are still reminded of what we have to do of what we are failing to do. I think can you some it up to not teaching our children to love america. Part of it is we are not even telling this story which is why it is so important that we are here doing that today. Pete i think the gravity i feel of it as well the responsibility to do proper remembrance by it. There is so much we cover on a daily basis that can make you cynical And frustrated with the trajectory of our country we talk about it all the time. But being here reminds me that just like on that Day Everyone was a new yorker. I mean, i want to recapture that feeling as much as we can And transfer it to the next generation because without it, we are in serious trouble as a country. Rachel White House released a address paying tribute to the lives lost. Pete Peter Doocy joins us from the White House with Joe Bidens message. Peter . Good morning, White House officials decided at some point instead of giving live Remarks Today they would have President Biden instead release a 6minute Longpre recorded message. Some have grown up without parents And parents have suffered without children. HusbAnds And wives have had to find ways forward without their partners. No matter how much time has passed. These commemorations bring everything painfully back. Officials here originally wanted today to be the day that u. S. Troops symbolically left afghanistan but they decided months ago that today needed to be less about policy And more about the people they lost. In that president ial message, mr. President biden does talk about his own personal loss, hoping to draw upon his own skill as a healer. Unity is what makes us who we are. America at its best. To me, thats the central lesson of September 11th. President biden plans to visit the sites of all three attacks today. It is going to be the first time he has visited events in three different states in one single day as president. Back to you. Are. Pete Peter Doocy thank you very much for that report. Joe biden did Release Taped Remarks which begs a the question a lot of people mentioned i what kind of reception he will get. Rachel a lot of question around that. Pete in light of what happened in afghanistan there is a great deal of consternation amongst Service Members And first responders about how that was hAndled. Im sure it will all be civil And it should be on a day of remembrance but there is a lot of Boiling Frustration under the surface. Rachel there is no question that this anniversary was going to be painful but probably all the more painful, more painful because of the events of the last two weeks, the humiliation that our country suffered fallout now we are probably facing more probability of terrorism because we just armed a Terrorist State. Will looking at your screen, Joe Biden, President Biden is arriving in Lower Manhattan here at the site World Trade Center Ground Zero now see him arriving. Pete the event here include And we will be covering them on the channel, reading of the names of those nearly 3,000 people killed in the attack. He will be attending that although were told leaving early to be able to facilitate And there he is right there walking out of the door greeted And assign that the ceremony. We are going to actually before we get to reading of those names on this channel, were going to play about 21 minutes of the events as they happened on that day, which happens once a year on the channel, those images of the planes crashing into the building because it is important to remember exactly what happened And exactly who attacked us those 20 years ago. Will i have asked you both during commercial breaks where were you. I think we do that everyone watching at home, you go back through the event as they unfolded in your own life. Where was i when i saw the images new York Stock exchange likely on your television screen. How did i internalize them . Every single person goes through that process. Even the guest we had here today, we had Eric Shawn on who was on The Streets of manhattan And watched the Plane Fly over his head. One of the things we have done as a country, as a people. We have also experienced that through the eyes of, for example, our then president , president george w. Bush. As We Saw him receive the news And the relation dawned on him And lets take a moment. This is the moment that President Bush finds out about the terrorist acts on September 11th, 2001. Page 153. Pete imagine you are in a classroom full of kids because your biggest initiative is literacy And education, foreign Policy Wasnt even really a discussion. There were rumblings, i was watching a special last night there were indications that some sort of an attack could be eminent in the country. No one had their arms around time And location or specifically what it would be. You wonder when Andy-card'>Andy Card leans over And says that what are the first few thoughts . How as a commAnderinchief you are under attack And you are right, a lot of us lived the experience of 9 11 through watching how george w. Bush hAndled this in those moments And heard from advisers around him as well about that. Rachel that moment from me is really poignant because i was surrounded by my child. I was pregnant with my second you are trying to keep it together. Seeing obviously not as much as George Bush did in that moment. You are aware of these children around you And what this means for their future, there are so many things that go through your head. For me, will, i was in a little town in rural, wisconsin i think about how divided our country is right now at that moment those divisions did not exist. I felt like a new yorker. There was no red or blue states. There was no republican states, democrat states, we were all americans. If you go back 20 years, our flag was not very controversial back then. We didnt have two national anthems. We were very united And i think that is what being here, looking at the tower behind us, thats what i think we all want. We want that unity back its hard to see how we get there its simple. We need to teach our children to love america, to not be ashamed of america. And her exceptionalism, And its really simple, but, yet, its not. Pete its not. We mentioned george w. Bush that day. Well, one of the people that was with him was ari fleischer, his Press Secretary on 9 11. He was On Ingraham last night talking about what it was like being with President Bush on 9 11. 30 seconds before Andy-card'>Andy Card walked into that room And whispered in the president s right ear, i was leaning against the left wall of that room about 20 feet over from the president s left shoulder And i got a second page And the second page told me second plane has hit the second tower. And i just knew at that moment, laura, that it was terrorism. And it just started to brace And get ready for everything that i knew would have to unfold as united states defended itself. Rachel yeah. Will you said we have experienced this through the eyes And experiences of president george w. Bush. I was proud of how he stood up And represented this country in that moment. Some different times throwing out that first pitch at yankee stadium. And then when he stood atop the pile here at Ground Zero. Pete nothing like it. Will And he said this. I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people. [cheers And applause] And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear All Of Us soon. Pete just a few days later, i think exactly what the nation needed to hear at that moment. We were still grieving. We were still sifting through. Trying to figure out what happened. And he stood on that Rubble Pile And said we are going to find you And we are going to come after you. The world is going to hear from us. It was a president ial moment, maybe the best i will ever remember as someone who has observed speaking on behalf of a nation. Rachel how does it feel for you, pete, you are a veteran in light of what he just said President Bush just said And the events last two weeks And how does that make you feel . Pete im proud of so many people who have given so much. I think that was a motivating moment for so many People Today what part can i play in the vengeance of a nation. Against islamists who struck us at home who deserve to get a boot on their neck. That was a real, very real sentiment for years And years And of course wars change And morph And all of that none of what has unfolded in afghanistan changes my feeling about the amazing nature of so many people who serve And certainly today reminds you on the first Responder Front here. Rachel absolutely. Pete civilians on the planes who did such heroic things how proud we should be as americans how exceptional we are as free people who dont seek other soil for our own but liberty other liberate otherpeople And give me freedom. Its a special And-george'>Thing And George w. Bush represented that on the pile for us that day. Will those people you are talking about, we spent several moments, a lot of time this morning talking about Stephen Siller. He was a fireman who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to this site, ran into the buildings to save people. And he embodied. He illustrates so many people that did just that his brother Frank Siller has honored him since that moment with the tunnel to Towers Foundation. He is the And-ceo'>Chairman And Ceo of that foundation thats honored And helped pay the mortgages of fallen firefighters, fallen policemen. Fallen military members who have honored this country. He was on the show a little bit earlier talking about this walk, this 500 plus Mile Walk from the pentagon shanksville, pennsylvania to Ground Zero to honor his brother. And here is what frank had to say. We lost 343 firefighters, the name of every one of them are on this wall. We lost over 60 Police Officers. They gave their lives that day. We lost 2977. But all those first responders, they gave their life by running in that building And saving over 20,000 people. My brother was part of that he will always be remembered as a firefighter who ran through the tunnel And gave up his life to help others. America is the greatest country that ever existed why . Because we have men And women in uniform that are willing to die every single day for our freedom, for our liberty so we can go out And live the great life, the best life of everywhere. And our Police Officers And firefighters they give us the security in our communities. Without that we dont have a society. Rachel frank took a moment of tragedy And he just turned it into a moment of triumph And this walk, i think, really embodies that. Will thats absolutely true. Pete reremain in awe of them. We thank them. We honor them. We remember them. Were inspired by them. Rachel yes. Pete take a moment to thank someone who still serves today. Take a moment on bended knee to pray for the souls And the family of those still here And that we as a nation will always remember what they did. And live worthy of it, frankly. Live worthy of the action of that day of so many. Will remember who we lost. We remember who embodied the best of us. Remember what we can be And remember who this nation is. Thats what this day is 20 years later. Now, you are looking live at Lower Manhattan where just a moment ago, a moment of silence or a moment from now a moment of silence is about to begin to observe the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. As we remember the September 11th attacks on america as it happened. A huge explosion. Send every available ambulance. Everything you have got to the World Trade Center now. There are images And language you will see that is disturbing. We show you this in effort to never forget the true tragedy of this day. Pete now we take you back 20 years ago this hour as the 9 11 attacks happened. This is 1010 news. You give us 22 minutes, we will give you the world. Good morning. 64 degrees at 8 00. Jumpers. Art, division one be advised. We have jumpers from World Trade Center. Oh my god. Oh my god. The plane, obviously, went in on one side And came out the other. There is debris all over the ground. And as you can see, it affects, perhaps, 10 floors of the World Trade Center building. It is over 100 stories tall. Brian at this time of morning is when people pour into that building. Its usually next. Steve we have also got to remember this is near the financial district on the tip of manhattan. There are so many people at this hour who are in that neighborhood. All the police And Fire Department And emergency technicians are headed to that area. This is horrible. Brian all we can do is stare aghast at these pictures at this point. You are looking at the North Building of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in manhattan. These are coming to you live now. Debris raining down from 110 floors up. As you can see this is a clear blue Sky Kay in manhattan. If this was an accident, it would be a needle a Haystack Kind of accident. Our Wendell Goler is traveling with the president. John, the president is here promoting a Reading Initiative on the second day of a Twoday Trip to florida. [camera shutter] a 175 recircle for code 170. United 175; do you read, new york . I cant get ahold of united 175 at all right now. I dont know where he went to. About 5,000 feel. Looks like yeah, thats him. Is he descending for the building also . He is descending really quick, yeah. Well. 2500 feet now. Just dropped 800 feet in one swoop. There was another one. We just saw we just saw another one. We just saw another one, apparently go another plane just flew into the second tower. We have a second plane into the other tower the tower advising a second plane into the World Trade Center. The other tower. Mayday mayday. Another Plane Hit the second tower, jay. This has to be deliberate, folks. We just saw on live television as a second plane flew into the second tower of the World Trade Center. Now, given what has been going on around the world, some of the key suspects come to mind Usama Bin Laden. Eric shawn is with us. Personally i apologize for being out of breath because i was walking down fifth avenue, which is close to our studios And i heard a jet flying low, unusually low over fifth avenue And it made a right toward the building. This is clearly deliberate. Chilling, chilling horrible scene we just saw is attack not just on the World Trade Center but at the very And-heart'>Soul And Heart of our nation, jon. It is a tragedy, it is abhorrent. It is disgusting. Obviously, it takes a lot of And-expertise'>Training And Expertise to fly a complicated sophisticated aircraft. These are not little says nasa, little pipers. So, there is a you have to wonder what was going on in the cockpit. Jon lets bring in david Lee Miller our correspondent, what can you tell us. Good morning, john. Im a few blocks from the World Trade Center as you would expect. The roadways are cut off. Only way to get near the building is on foot. The scene is absolutely a horrific one. You look outside the fox studios, look how clear it is. How could you miss the trade towers . Not just one but two planes . No matter how this turns out, this is going to be a day that is going to live in infamy And, you know, its going to cause changes in terms of security like this country has never seen before. Jon let me bring into the conversation david asman, my colleague. Yes, jon scott, i want to give you late breaking information. All of manhattan has been sealed off. In today we have had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent Terrorist Attack on our country. I have spoken to the Vice President , to the governor of new york, to the director of the fbi. And i have ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims And their families And to conduct a full Scale Investigation to hunt down And to find those folks who committed this act. Terrorism against our nation will not stAnd. And now if you join me in a moment of silence may god bless the victims, their families And america. Thank you very much. Jon you just got wonder what reaction happens next . Lets find out from a former special agent of the fbi, this is joseph, And the federal government simply shut down the airspace And keep all airplanes on the ground . Well, of course. Any legitimate aircraft can be controlled totally through the faa in the various control centers And towers; however, a hijacked aircraft that is under control. Jon i want to interrupt you for just a minute. The White House is being evacuated. That comes to us from one of our fox producers in washington. The White House is being evacuated. The pentagon as well. Everybody back. Everybody back. Lets go. Move it out. Just had an airPlane Crash district area. American Airline Plane headed east over the pike possibly toward the pentagon. See the smoke. Responding to check the area of the pentagon. Advise on channel 1. Im directing there is high visible smoke coming from that area. High visible smoke. Jon i dont want to insight any undo panic there is a report only of another aircraft that has crashed. David asman is joining from us fox central. David, what do you have. We have the heart of the financial district of america being attacked now we understAnd that there is an explosionthere has been an explosion in the pentagon, the heart of the military And-center'>CommAnd Center of the united states of america, jon. It cant get much worse than, this lets hope. Jon it has happened again. Another large airliner, perhaps hijacked, perhaps part of some widespread plan, apparently slamming into at least the area around the pentagon. Aboard back to airport And have our 2k3457bgdz demAnds. United 93 calling. United 93 understAnd have a bomb on board . Go ahead. 9 56 did you understAnd that transmission. Affirmative. He said there was a bomb on board. Aircraft cant get ahold of turn to the east now. He just turned to the east also. United 93, do you hear And-center'>ClevelAnd Center . We just lost the target on that aircraft. Jon we now understAnd that the federal Aviation Administration is shutting down all Airport Airline takeoffs nationwide. Planes that are in the air right now are going to be diverted to the closest airport as soon as possible because in a situation like this, the authorities dont know where the next one might come from. Collapse of one of the towers. Tower 2 major explosion And what appears to be a complete collapse surrounding the area. Collapse tower. Major collapse. Everybody in the area oh my god. What the hell happened . There has been a huge explosion. Everyone is running in the other direction. Were on Church Street. We are not sure what happened. There has been a huge eggs motion. Everyone is running for their lives literally. Police, media, i see a woman pushing a baby carriage. Its unclear what happened. If the tower collapsed or what. I think we better get out of this mess, dude. I think we better get out of this. Here comes the smoke. [screaming] help me, jesus. Can anybody hear me . Im a civilian. Im trapped in one of the fire trucks underneath. StAnd by, there are people close to you. I cant breathe much locker. Save me. Were setting up an ad hoc emergency post. We have multiple units on the way in at this time. 104. I have And-dozen'>Dozen And Dozen of firemen. We have medical emergencies, possible heart attacks. . Which way to go . Stay put. Stay put. Everyone is covered in like thousAnds of people down right now. David Lee Miller is still with us. David, what can you tell us . Jon, the scene is horrific. One of the two towers literally collapsed. There was debris falling people And the entire perimeter began literally including myself, thats why im out of breath to run for our lives. Jon it appears that the building simply collapsed of its own weight. There was so much damage from the heat of the fire. The steel will melt. That was the building that was hit by the second plane. That plane seemed to come in at a lower altitude. It hit the building lower down And there was that tremendous fireball. So, the damage to the building came at a point where there is much more weight on top of it And those steel girders, strong as theyre, had a lot of weight to support And apparently, im not a structural engineer but im just guessing now that they gave way. The loss of life here is going to be enormous. Eric may god help those who are there And the victims And their families And the souls that are lost today. Jon Rick Leventhal once again with our producer Carlos Van meek is in Lower Manhattan. You cannot even see the sky there because of the soot, the ash, the tumbled content that is continuing to rain down. This is Church Street it looks like a snow storm hit. There is thick ash on the ground. Lots of it pAndemonium here. How are you doing, sir . A little shook up. I went through vietnam And never seen anything like this. Its unbelievable. How close were you to the building when it happened. I was in front of the door of five World Trade Center evacuate its the people out of the building. We got a lot out but then it just blew. You couldnt move because you couldnt see. There was ash And smoke. I couldnt see because my eyes And my mouth were full. As soon as we heard the explosion. We ran out of new York State supreme court And jumped on juriy bus. Back it up. Back it up. Here we go again. Here we go again. I dont know whats going on but this the second building is collapsing, i believe. [screams] the other tower just collapsed. Collapse. The World Trade Center collapsed. Building 2 has collapsed. Urgent, urgent. Everybody get out. We had a collapse of the second tower. Everybody is running from there. Here it comes its hard to describe, folks. The pictures show what has happened in Lower Manhattan but we dont have a hAndle yet on the devastation. The World Trade Center has collapsed. And the Casualty Figure we cannot even begin to guess at at this point. United 93, have you got information on that yet. Yeah, he is down. He is down . Yes. When did he lAnd . He did not lAnd. Oh he is down . Yeah. Somewhere northeast of camp david. Jon authorities at the Somerset County Airport confirm a large Plane Crash about 80 Miles Southeast of pittsburgh. The united states will hunt down And punish those responsible for these cowardly acts. Wow. If your household is like our set, silence And transfixed, taking you back 20 years to exactly what happened, exactly who is response cybil. Rachel you know, im really having so many emotions as i watch that. I cant believe how much anger i feel inside right now. Will not a word was uttered on this set as pete mentioned the last 2 minutes. Lets lay out now And allow the events unfolding at Ground Zero, site of the former World Trade Center as the memorial service begins. Banner yet wave oer the lAnd of the free And the home of the brave [cheers And applause] [bagpipes] [bagpipes] [bagpipes] [bell tolls] a moment of silence the moment of silence we just shared marks the very moment 20 years ago that american Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My name is mike lowe. And my daughter Sarah Elizabeth Lowe was a Flight Attendant on that plane. These 20 years have felt like both a long time And a short time And as we recite the names of those relost, my memory goes back to that terrible day, when it felt like an evil specter had descended on our world but it was also a time when many people acted above And beyond the ordinary. Beginning with the actions of the flight crews, like sarah, And the passengers on the four flights, the individuals in the towers, the professionals of the And-police'>Fire And Police And later the volunteers who helped work on the pile since the recovering Loved Ones remains, they helped pull us through the darkest days of our lives. In the last 20 years, my family And i have at times known unbearable And-disbelief'>Sorrow And Disbelief about the lives that would never be. Years we have filled with speaking out on my Daughters Behalf And calling on many more precautions. And also for the history to be remembered not as numbers And a date but the faces of ordinary people, people who looked a lot like sarah. At the first Memorial Ceremony my wife bobby And i stood here with thousAnds of family members moist of the black world of destroyed buildings. Today this is a quiet place of memory. The gleaming 9 11 museum holds a sacred repository for our Loved Ones remains And still brightly stories of the sons And daughters And siblings, husbAnds And wives, grAndparents And friends. As we carry these 20 years forward, i find sustenance And a continuing appreciation for all of those who rose to be more than ordinary people. And a Fathers Pride in his daughters selfless acts in the last moments of her life. Acting with calm to help those in the air And those on the ground.
