It was more than that. Bret we heard from Lucas Tomlinson down at Guantanamo Bay. Why do you think there hasnt been a trial . 20 years here and still in pretrial hearings . Yeah, i think, you know, its well documented that several president s have tried really hard to close it down and expedite these trials and complexities of the issues involved are such, i guess that they just cant get it done. I do not know the intrick crazies anymore. When i was on active duty we were not quite to the Trial Stage when i was still in service. I havent followed it closely enough to know the legal complexities of why this isnt happening as bad as these people are they need a trial. Thats one of the things we guarantee our citizens. I know they are not our citizens but the right thing to do is get on with the trial and let justice take its course. Bret two more things should the military be held accountable for happy talk about the status of Afghan Forces. Considering what We Saw in recent days . Is the media involved in that . Should we have been asking tougher questions to you all . You know, thats a great, thats a good question and those were the same questions i had when we were chairman starting to train people and how many lee sources to doo we put to training Afghan Forces and can they be an effective force in The End . It turned out they werent, but i think what they rely on, a lot as the the country was trying to become a countri and not a group of tribes they relied on u. S. Advisers to focus in and be the informal leader and the inspiration for what they were doing. Without that, and it falls apart pretty quickly. And im also told there was a lot of corruption in the hierarchy in the afghan army. So, the high ranking officers were maybe not alwayS Paying the low ranking officers which doesnt build a lot of loyalty. I think there were a lot of issues with that. And i think we all should have been asking a lot of questions. You know, obviously i havent been in many Briefing Rooms where that was discussed so i cant give you the specifics on it. Bret yeah. Last thing. Its a heavy one for the last one. In retrospect, in 20 years looking back, do you think going into iraq was a mistake and drained resources and attention from afghanistan . Unfortunately i dont think thats as big an issue. Two operations. Its the intellectual Capital And Energy you have to deal with problems. I think we could handled that things ebbed and flowed. Afghanistan was looking good and got worse and then got better. I remember telling a reporter in Afghanistan One of my first visits that if were going to be successful in afghanistan. The afghan people are going to need several generations to change. If they want to change for the better. And we just you know, we never got there. But, im not sure i would say that we didnt have the resources to do both. Although when you consider all instruments of National Power, you know, we made both of those problems heavily a military problem. And i think thats that wasnt correct.
