The financial capitol was hit hard, it has come storming back. A testament to capitalism and this Country and our resolve. Welcome, everybody. Im neil cavuto, this is your world. You know, 20 years ago today, it was a monday. That they, the last day of innocence some called it would no no Way Hint of the trauma and the nightmare that would come and change america forever. When It Hit, It Hit badly. For the financial community, hit badly as well. Not only in terms of financial capitol but human capitol. Hundreds died that day in the investment community. More than 650 individuals at one firm, Cantor Fitzgerald allots. There were many others. The death of firefighters and First Responders that went into the hundreds and growing questions as to whether New York could or would come back. My next guest remembers it well. Ted wiseberg joins us, seaport securities. Hes been through many crises. Where were you that day, ted . The day started out, the reverse of where i am today. On the phone in my office, 60 Broad Street, 31st floor. Beautiful crystal clear New York day, looking out over the harbor. We couldnt see the World Trade Center but we have a Panoramic View of lower manhattan. I was on the phone with a good Friend And Client in bermuda. Its exactly 20 years later, just a little later in the afternoon. You know, he said a plane just hit the World Trade Center. I said youre kidding me. He said no, no, im not kidding. The horror began to unfold. I got off the phone. I went down the elevator to go to the bottom. I never got inside the Stock Exchange. When i hit The Street, there were people everywhere. Dust in the air. I called the office upstairs. I said everybody get out. Well meet on The Street, on Broad Street in front of the exchange. I called the exchange. Some of our people didnt want to leave. Some did. Those that did, we all met on The Street. While we were standing out there, i dont know how long we were there but we were there a good 20, 30 minutes, both towers collapsed. You couldnt breathe. Weve seen pictures. I guess if you were a skier, a white out if youre skiing or driving in the mountains. You couldnt breathe. The dust was everywhere. Eventually our group decided to get out from under the dust cloud. So we walked to the river. Three hours later, we walked uptown. No cell phones. There were no towers because The Tower had collapsed and most of the Cell Towers were on top of the World Trade Center. Look behind you, all You Saw is smoke, piles of smoke going into the sky. Eventually we got up to the upper east side. Some folks bumped with Each Other. At that point most of the people that were with me or lived in upper manhattan. You know, we hunkered down until the morning of 917 when the Stock Exchange reopened and there we were at 9 30, good to go. It was very emotional. Neil yeah, that was a crazy day. Ted, were having some audio problems. I apologize. Ted wiseberg following all that. He referred to the markets opening again. That was six days later. That careened. We had the quickest dissent to a bear market. Wall street did come back. There were a lot of losses there. Im not talking financials wills. All the investment, heavyweights of the world were centered in the financial Community Downtown New York. John duffy headed a firm. He lost his son in that calamity. Lets go back. You had no communication with christopher that day. One of your other sons going to school in vermont did. That was after the second plane had already hit The Tower. He was i believe trapped in a Stairway Or Christopher was on a Trading Desk at kbw. I did call the office after the first plane had hit the North Tower. I had spoken with one of my assistants. People in the South Tower were fine. They werent sure what had happened at that point in time. So you know, it was five to ten minutes after the first plane had struck. When i attempted to call christopher later, Cell Phone Service was out. That is after the second play hit. There were a group of them from the Trading Defkt that were trying to access the different stairwells to find and exit route. They were unable to. Kevin is the last person that spoke to christopher. Neil when we talk about Wall Street, we talk about the money. But these were personal eventses, ceos, entire investment firms gone in a moment. As i said, 658 with Cantor Fitzgerald alone. Not only were people wondering whether the firm could survive but whether they could move on after such huge personal losses. But now theyre doing fine. The ceo joins us rights now. We should point out that Hes Part of the a new financial empire. Looking back on that day, remembering what your firm lost but you came back. I understand a lot of it had to do with the fact that firms starting helping Each Other. It was incredible. You know, the amount of good Will And Unity existed in our company and around Wall Street and around the Country was really part of the fuel that helped us go about and rebuild. After this happened and i saw the tape you played with john, john, myself and others, we sat down and said, look were going to do two things. Number 1, were going to do everything we can to help the victims and their families. Number 2, were going to rebuild the firm. That way we can do more to help the families and because we cant let the firm end that way. Were not going to let the firm end by terrorists flying planes into our buildings. In many ways it was almost therapeutic to go out and rebuild. That was the energy afterwards. But that was the feeling after those first couple weeks and the fuel that caused us to move forward. Neil every one talks about the exchange being closed and but for you it was personal and at the time for john, losing his son. A third of your firm gone. The idea of system how getting back, forget the financial losses, the human losses. Some of our best financial minds of that time were all gone. Did you ever wonder whether at least the way, you know, capitalism was known in the u. S. At that time would come back . I was a believer in that regards. You know, we just had a whole series of goals in front of us. I keep saying it was like pushing a big rock up a hill. Behind me right now is a flag that one of our Survivors Wife painted for us shortly after 911 with all the names of those that passed away on 911. It was the energy of rebuilding the firm because it felt to us like it was the right thing to do. Like i said earlier, that was the fuel. Neil, something now i think is interesting at the 20th anniversary. While we always honor the victims, i think its important that we remember what it took for the Country to rebuild. Because over a quarter of the Country-today'>Country Today is probably too young to remember the events live. Im worried that 911 may be a couple of paragraphs in a history book. Meanwhile, you have to think about that good will, the june tip, the resilience in our Country. Thats why im not sure if youre aware im a member of an organization called 911 day. We convinced President Bush to start and President Obama to sign a proclamation making 911 a national day of service and remember vance. So weve been encouraging americans to not let the last chapter that gets written by the terrorists and what happened that day but instead what do we do with it. So were encouraging a day of service to remember those that lost their lives and the effort that went into rebuilding. I was confident that the american system would survive. I dont think i was ever worried about that. I was worried about new York City. New York City did come back. I did wonder, neil, if i was ever going to come back to New York. I had been on a the sidewalk and saw the attacks and the two planes hit the buildings. As i was walking north to midtown, i wondered if i would come back to New York again. But rebuilding was therapeutic for us and felt like the right thing to do. Neil im glad you did come back to New York but being a key part in the rebuilding. Tom, thanks very much. Very good seeing you. Thank you, neil. Neil the question is always asked, could it happen again . I had a chance to catch up with Tom Cane of New Jersey, the cochair of the 911 commission and he raised with me the possibility of everything going on, yeah, it could. The notion that it could happen again, do you think it could . Well, we know what is happening in afghanistan. I worry that are there going to be places in afghanistan that are ungoverned and people can plot about the homeland. If they do, unfortunately we have to go back in. We cant let them do that again. Neil to rob oneill, a retired Navy Seal that shot Osama Bin Laden. Rob, what do you think of that . Theres a guy that did all the investigations about what led up to 911, fearful concern that it could happen again especially in light of these developments in afghanistan. What do you think . Good to be with you, neil. Thanks again. I think hes right. The issue right here is the taliban, alquaida, isis, the haqqani network, theyre true believers in their cause. They martyr themselves, that theyre going to go to paradise. Its a reward that they want. What they see now, our retreat from afghanistan is a win for their god. Allah gave them this victory. That will empower a lot of these sleeper cells. St. Louis, london, france. Theyre going to see a win. Its not going to stop them from getting a truck and continue the jihad because thats the way it works. Im concerned about that. I want people to be vigilant, keep your head on a civil. Because youre not at war doesnt mean somebody is at war with you. Neil one of the things i raised with the governor, the lack of communication and sharing information with Intelligence Agencies, the cia, fbi. He said a lot of that has been changed since the commission had the report. But we see things slip through the cracks. Does that worry you that we might not be ready for something because agencies are not on the same page . I dont think its as bad as it was before 911 but theres still people out there that want to get promoted for their own good so they wont let people share their pie. Thats one of the problems. Dont get me wrong. Theres wonderful Men And Women in federal Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agencies that are sharing but theres the issue of people not telling their bosses the truth. We see it in the military all the tight. They make their boss mad, they wont get the promotion. So you know, some people im concerned have gotten rid of The Greater Good for personal power. Thats what concerns me, too. A lot of people arent telling Each Other the truth, a lot of the times the truth can get you fired. We see it from getting Julie Banderas banned on twitter. Neil thanks, rob oneill. At least for taking out Osama Bin Laden and you and some of your brave colleagues that did that. Why the question still remains whether that could continue to be galvanized in a new afghanistan. Something that we were just starting to explore 20 years ago. The u. S. S. Roosevelt is ready, on route, destination unknown. Thats as it should be. Were not going to give away any military secrets even if we did know them. The roosevelt is leaving port here. The response at the white house. Peter doocy is there. Hi, peter. Hi, neil. The president is starting to narrow down or be more clear with the american people about which americans hes upset about with regard to the pandemic. Yesterday he just vaguely talked about a small minority of americans and a small minority of elected leaders that he thought were not allowing the u. S. To get past where we are in the delta variant. Today he came clean. He said its republican governors. Some of these republican lawmakers here in washington d. C. Think that that is the wrong tone. A scolding and condescending to americans, dripping with scorn, that somehow this is their fault that theyve been infected with a virus, theyre not going to persuade people to get more vaccines. The vaccine the Trump Administration designed are safe and effective. At the heart of this Sixpoint President Ial Plan to require convenience for millions of american workers and students is a new rule that is being worked on by osha. But the administration despite coming forward with their Intentions Cant tell us how long it will take for the rule to be written. They cant tell us whether or not it will be ready for the Delta Spike is done and theyre also now revealing that theres a very big Loop Hole in this sixpoint plan. I asked Jen Psaki why it is theres a new Vaccine Mandate for workers but not for people walking across the border. Certainly we want everybody to get vaccinated and more people are vaccinated whether theyre migrants or whether they are workers. Protects more people in the united states. But its a requirement for people at a business with more than 100 people and its not a requirement for migrants at the southern thats correct. Thats correct. The president pitched his plan at a Middle School earlier today. We expect to see him to head to New York for Tomorrows Commemoration at ground zero. Neil . Neil thanks, peter doocy. A lot of companies are already doing this. Mandates are already fully in effect for a lot of companies that are saying, no tab, no job. Grady trimble in chicago with more. Hi, grady. The Business Roundtable which represented the largest companies in the world says they support the president s plan, but many of the companies whos ceos didnt have Vaccine Mandates in place. That could change. American airlines sent a letter to employees after the announcement came through that said were reviewing the Executive Order and awaiting more details. Based on what we see, it will appears were impacted by the federally mandated impacts. Many of the companies we reached out to had something similar to say but nothing changed their policy yet. Several Labor Unions are also chiming in. They want to say in how the mandates are implemented, a handful of companies required employees to get vaccinated. United airlines, Kraft Heinz among them. United is playing workers that get a religious exemption on unpaid leave. The other facet is how workers will respond. A recent poll found that seven inten unvaccinated employees would quite their job if their employer required them to get vaccinated and didnt allow for medical or religious exemptions. So if people quit, there could be a lot of fallout from that. Neil i can see the lawyers lining up. Grady, thanks. Grady trimble on all of that. He lost his brother in the 911 attacks. Neil you know Ken Feinberg is a big deal when Michael Keaton is playing him. The role was controversial. Ken is coming up. Neil did Frank Stiller come to your town . He came to mine and hundreds across the northeast as he trekked better than 537 miles to remember his brother and to remember what happened that day. You can see, franks brother a new York City fireman was killed in those attacks. Frank has started what has been a Greats Way to make some goodness come of this horror. Hes very involved. In fact, now the Foundation Ceo of tunnels to towers. You finished, frank. How did it go . It was unbelievable, neil. It was so nice to see you out there. Im walking, i think it was mendhan, New Jersey . Right, right. There you are greeting the great caravan i had with us. Your son, a volunteer firefighter, you might be so proud. Neil i am. Ive been greeted im sure you are. Wellyou should be. Ive been greeted by so many Beautiful Americans who love america, who get it. They will never forget what happened 20 years ago. What is very encouraging to me, there were so many young families that have greeted me along the way. Morristown had an unbelievable parade the day after i saw you. Thousands had come out. It was raining, too, by the way. Neil yeah, they wanted to see you, frank. They wanted to see you. What i noticed go ahead. No, you go. Neil okay. Fine. I know today was so beautiful. If you would stop and every one wanted to take a picture with you, you shook their hand. Ever how long it took. You wanted to be there. On you walked again. I thought why dont you drive the 537 miles . You kept walking. It was amazing. Some of the pictures prove it in my particular town. I know you repeated this across all of these places that you visited. It touches people. What do they tell you . What do they want to hear . You know, it was so uplifting. They said thank you. You know, the reason why i wanted to do this, first of all, i wanted to honor my brother. Hes such a hero. He gave up his life on 911. He rack through the tunnel with his gear on the back to get there. A father of five. He was just a beautiful person. I wanted to do something. So many people say thank you for doing this because they dont want 911 to be forgotten. I just want to get them courage by seeing so many young people out there. Also, the reason why its successful, the foundation is successful, were helping the greatest of all americans, you know who they are, those that are willing to die for you and i every day. Our Men And Women in uniform and First Responders. Were delivering them mortgagefree homes or smart homes when they give their bodies for our Country. 20 years of doing joyful work for the greatest of all americans. Neil you know, you turn such horror into good for so many. When i see this, its tough to watch the commercials and still have a dry eye when you talk about families who have lost everything or their Loved One is so incapacitated. There you provide a home, take out the mortgage. They have a chance, they have a shot in a new very different life. What gave you that idea . Well, look, first we built the first smart home in 2011. Delivered it june 11, 2011. The first Quadruple Amputee was from New York. In 2014, december 20th, ramos was assassinated. They were worried about mortgage payments. We heard about that. Christmas eve, i sat down with these families and said that tunnel to tower would pay off their mortgage. We saw the difference that the mortgage payoffs, the smart homes are making in peoples lives. They have enough going on. They just lost their Loved One. Gold star families, what were doing for them. You know, we lost 13 great Service Member in afghanistan. One of them is lance corporal mccullom. He left behind a wife and a pregnant wife. I talking to her tomorrow. She knows our intentions stating i didnt want to call her too soon after her loss. Shes pregnant. Let them know were building a house. I talking to her tomorrow on 911. You know why . Because i want to do good on a day that was so evil 20 years ago because of what my brother did, im going to always make sure, my family is always going to make sure that good steps on evil every time. Thats what im doing tomorrow. Neil you know, frank, youre a remarkable man. You know that already. You honor your brother beautifully. To go to this extent is amazing. Ive told my brother if something happens, i would do the same for him. Youre that much of a wonderful human being. And i saw it myself. I saw it play out with people that wanted just a second with you and you gave every single one of them that time. Frank, thank you very much. Please joins us, help people to join us. Cant get it done unless the goodness of america takes care of the greatness of america. 11 a month. Let us never forget. Neil thank, thank you very much. Its an amazing charity. You know, you always hear about administrative costs and all of this. This is recognized around the world as one of the most important and productive cash efficient charities on the planet. It gets to where its intended to go. No doubt because frank is calling the shots. We have more. Remembering what was started on 911 that still goes on to this day. Having come up here and just look what is going on, you know, half a world away it seems in downtown New York. I cant tell you, john, just the number of times ive been on both World Trade Center towers in my 20 years talking to some of the mightiest in the corporate community. That community, of course, gone now. We did it again. Verizon has been named americas most reliable network by rootmetrics. And our customers rated us 1 for Network Quality in america according to j. In 2016, i was working at the Amazon Warehouse when my brother passed away. And a couple of years later, my mother passed away. After taking care of them, i knew that i really wanted to become a nurse. Amazon helped me with training and tuition. Today, im a medical assistant and im studying to become a registered nurse. Neil you know, almost 3,000 people lost their lives on 911. You probably heard the statistics repeatedly. It could have been worse. Mike hurley escaped from the South Tower on the day of the attacks. It was nothing short of a miracle. Mike, how are you doing . Im doing fine. Thank you. How about you . Neil good. Tell us about that day, if you can, mike. Well, i was on the 17th Floor of the South Tower. I got there early. I got my coffee. I started preparing for a class. Put my handouts. About a quarter till 9 00, the North Tower got hit. There was a tremendous after of debris coming down. Huge amounts. Size of the Kitchen Table and paper all over the place. Unbelievable the amounts of paper. I told the people, i arrived early, keep away from the windows and stuff like that. You could see the debris was heavy. Then i decided, something was wrong. That it was time for me to leave. So i told the woman that was in charge of the institute at that time that, you know, im leaving. I think you should evacuate the whole floor. She had a whistle for fire and things like that. She started blowing the whistle. She told everybody to go down the floor. Neil not everyone was evacuating, right . Your gut was right. What were you being told to do in the building or the Intercom System . We werent being told to do anything at that particular point. We got down to the i got down to the lobby. There was a Port Authority Policeman that said it was safe to go back up. I decided this was not a place to be safe. So i went out. I was heading towards the e train. Going through the various stores and lobby that was there. Some detective grabbed me. He said where are you going . He said theres no trains running. So i said, can i go out on Day Street . He said go ahead. So when i went out to Day Street, they had there was a cop on one side of The Street and the cop on the other side. He would signal to the cop to say let five people cross. He would wait until the debris started to lesson. We would run across The Street. We started going up. It was at that point that the South Tower got hit. Not that i saw the plane but i saw that big Orange Ball that we all saw on tv hit. And now the amount of glass that came down. It was glass that was from the buildings that were by me from the explosion. Thats when a lot of people got hurt, particularly the women. They took off their High Heels so they could run faster. They were running on glass. They got their feet cut. Nothing life threatening but they were in a lot of pain. Reaching for the other side. Neil a scary time. You got out. Thats what counts. Now you can live to tell about it. I wish it was im in a rush for time but so glad youre well. You were wise to follow your got. Mike curley, thanks very much. How would you like to be in charge of the Compensation Fund that would decide how much money you get and its decided not necessarily all even. Based on who you were, how much you made. There was a formula to it. Ken feinberg was the guy responsible for delivering it. Im the businessman, the only cpa running for gov ernor. California is a mismanaged mess. Taxes, cost of living, water, wildfires, homelessness. These arent political issues; theyre readily fixable management issues. Career politicians . Celebrities . Ive solved problems all my life. Lets fix this great state and their families will be compensated based on economic value lost. Thats exactly what these people need right now. Neil you know youre a big deal when Michael Keaton is playing you in a popular netflix movie. Its about Ken Feinberg, hell doed out the money from the 911 attacks. Ken feinberg is with us right now. Good to see you. Nice to be here again, neil. Thanks. Neil you know, i know Michael Keaton was trying to get your massachusetts accent down. Its North Tower as good as yours. Thats my opinion. Neil i didnt realize maybe theres a dramatic effect here. You had a hell of a task on your hand. This money was not going to be divided evenly. You had to recognize there were highpaid brokers and bankers and others in these buildings that were not going to get the same Compensation Check that a fireman would or dishwasher would. How did you arrive at that . First of all, congress and the law creating the fund made it pretty clear that i was to follow in principle state law, every state in the Country has courts and juries that provide more compensation to Stock Brokers and bankers than waiters and bus boys. Neil but never on a level like this. No. No. That was the problem, you see. When you have 5,000 claims for death and physical injury, everybody counts other peoples money. That is a response that was almost uniform. Mr. Feinberg, youre giving me 3 million. But youre giving my next Door Neighbor 4 million. What do you have against my wife . You didnt even know her. The law promoted the very type of divisiveness youre trying to avoid. Ultimately overcame that divisiveness. Neil there was much talk about how you changed your formula or whatever it was after meeting with a number of the victims families and that their i wouldnt call it an Epiphany But Something happened to move this forward. Because up until this socalled change, it wasnt looking like you had signed up enough to write off on the fund itself. Explain what happened. The biggest problem we confronted in this whole program was not financial. It wasnt calculating formulas. The biggest problem, as you know, neil, the law creating the fund occurred just 13 days after the attacks. Emotion, incredibly raw, angry, frustrated people. Mr. Feinberg, youre providing me 3 million. They havent even found my sons body yesterday. How dare you come here talking about dollars and cents. It did take time for empathy. I think a somewhat calmness in terms of evaluating financial uncertainty at least, but it was difficult. It was emotional and it was debilitating. Neil how did you expand it for those that we later learned to discover would get sick and die working on site or having to do with rescuing people on 911 . Then you had to revisit things, right . Of course. Dont forget, the statute expired. The fund was over in december of 2003. That meant that people, First Responders and others that had illnesses, had not manifested with cancer, emphysema, those diseases didnt come out until years later. So congress had to reacts investigate the fund for purposes of compensating First Responders and others that only in 2013, 14, 15, today are now manifesting those physical illnesses. Neil did the compensation, the way you went about compensating people, did that same method apply to this latest group of people who needed help . Yes. I think theres some variations. Basically the Victim Compensation that i administered versus Victim Compensation 2, they basically follow the same format. There may be some differences. Eligibility and valuation. But theyre basically the same. Neil a lot of people have looked into this and called to do it again since 911. It changed the note of how we reward people. That is the Way Congress wanted it. Did it ever envision the controversy around it, a family would not be as generously compensated as lets say a broker . Congress didnt think that way, no. Congress wanted to make sure that whatever i had to do to entice and incentivize people, do it. We dont want lawsuits, we dont want airlines being sued, the World Trade Center being sued. We want a better system in this particular tragedy to avoid litigation. I dont think youll see a 911 Fund again. I think it was a unique reaction to an unprecedented disaster in american history. It wont be replicated. Im not sure it will be. Bad things happen to people every day. Theres no 911 Fund. Ken feinberg, thank you. Victim Compensation Fund. I urge you to watch the Michael Keaton movie on this. It puts in perspective a herculean task. Thanks, ken, very, very much. Looking back at that day and all that would come as a result of that day, Compensation And Everything else. It was the Shear Enormity of the loss that hits home. Whoever committed this heinous act today, the gist was not only to cause tremendous physical damage and obviously a tremendous loss of life, they have also cut the financial capitol of the world to the core. Police and fire were racing to the scene. I ran as one of the buildings collapsed as did a number of Police And Fire in a number of nearby streets. New Yorkest Finest and bravest were trapped inside. There was total panic. Cops, sheriffs, construction workers, welders just dropping everything running up The Street. He was last seen when he left the house at 6 00 a. M. I havent heard from him. Not a Phone Call from him. Im looking for him. Anybody with information the f. A. A. , the Department Of Transportation said they will allow limited flights. Most of the flights were diverted to other airports are stranded. They will not fly until the airports are thoroughly searched and the passengers check in with tougher security. Were making it towards the water and running away. We have to do whatever you have to do. Just keep moving. Every time people look back, they look back and saw the second plane hit. It was gruesome. So theyre running back. Trying to get out of there. That plane was severe because everything is falling out of the sky. Including bodies. The Human Dimension is incalculatable. Thats the question. When trading resumes monday, yeah, you have the machines back, the wires back, the keyboards. The Data Terminals connecting. Theyre all working again. But youre looking at a lot of empty desks. Weve heard about the live lost and the buildings lost. I want to end talking about the friends, the guests that i lost. Im being selfish here. So many but finally id like to focus on two. Two eerily gentlemen that were regulars on this show. Bill and david. Theres a lot going on surrounding Wall Street that is unlike anything weve seen neil but its been going on awhile. At what point do you think the signals are enough . I dont think the signals will be enough until the fed does something. People might spend it. Exactly. Spend it. When you multiply that by the number of taxpayers in the Country by 100 Million people, 300 a pop off the top why save it. Exactly. Why save it. Its going to be a nice factor for the economy. Bill and david gone now but not forgotten ever. Thats what September 11th means to me. Neil there were many more that were lost that day. Guests on this show, those that provided their financial expertise of america and where we are headed had no idea where they were headed and how short those days would be before they were gone. In one case, someone was on with me a couple days before the attacks. You never know they say in life the unpredictability of it all. The rich, the poor and everyone in between who had any moment can be taken when they least expect it. Leaving behind families that needed help and healing. As Ken Feinberg would say, compensation as well. All of that was to be worked out. But not before the magnitude of the events that unfolded. If you think about it, 20 years ago this day was a monday. The last innocent day before everything hit the fan. When all we were talking about were, well, New York mayoral race and at least in this city, the hope that maybe the yankees or the mets would surprise us. That was then. This weekend we look into what is now. Ill see you tomorrow for special coverage at 8 00 a. M. Eastern time as we look back in and look forward. Jesse hello, everyone, i am jesse watters. Its 5 00 in new York City and this is the five. President biden telling republican Lock Governors to bring it on as they prepare lawsuits to fight back against the sweeping Vaccine Mandates that will impact up to A Hundred Million americans
