A lot of planning goes into a night like that not just with the Air Force but with the joint partners of the 82nd on the ground there. A lot has been made about The Five aircraft that happened to be on the ground. We had actually 20 aircraft in support rolls in the air. C17s on stand by in Case Anything went wrong. The plan leading up was fairly detailed and complicated. But you do that so that the execution can go as smoothly as it did that night. Bill kabul fell august 15th, a sunday as you know. Our marines and soldiers and navy corpsmen were blown up on the 19th. Were you on the airport on and around that day or did you come later . We were there. We were there from the beginning. We had by the time it was over 80 c17s were committed to Evacuation Operations. Many of us were there at that time. I happened to be in kabul that day actually. I would say what We Saw was from my perspective similar to what america saw. The feelings we had were disappointed being so close to The End we could have such a tragic loss of american lives. We in the military felt that i think like many americans did. We lost some brothers and sisters particularly so close to The End. Dana it was especially tragic and we still have them top of mind. What about your thoughts knowing that there were some americans and Green Card holders and then of Course Interpreters and other helpers of the united states that would be left behind . From our perspective ill go back to what i said how very busy we were with the Evacuation Operation leading up to the final exit. We were not seeing what america was seeing at all. We were very much involved in flying every day. Specifically for C17 Air crews the hardest three weeks of our lives emotionally and physically. None of that was in the forefront of our mind like maybe america was seeing. What we were seeing was 450 people on each one of our c17s. We were seeing young families, a lot of little kids, a lot of grateful and hopeful smiles. We i would say i had a unique advantage of being in a position where all We Saw was Gratefulness And Goodness and success in what we were doing. Bill you just described it as three of the most extraordinary weeks of your life. Thats a lot. Thats heavy, colonel. Yeah. I think some of this hasnt quite been captured yet but it is the middle east. 120 degrees outside. Physically hot. We were flying every single day. We were loading c17s are more passengers and evacuees than we had ever done. The largest airlift Evacuation Operation in history. The first time weve ever done it and we were Sort Of building this operation as we were executing. So a lot of challenges. I think ive been doing this for 20 years and i entered the Military A couple months before 9 11 and i was flying with some younger folks who are only 20 years old, 21 years old now. The range of emotions for everybody was different and in addition to the physical toll it took on us i think there was a lot of emotions involved as well. Bill i can clearly understand that. Colonel, last point here. How much organization was there that you saw that either allowed someone to get On Board your c17 or not . Tremendous. I never had any issues at all with that. So organization on the ground. In addition to the 82nd and the operations 621st Response Wing they are in airport operations. As challenging as it was. It was landing in kabul and evacuating people. I didnt see anything going on outside the gate. I was inside the gate. Outside of the first few days that were hectic and chaotic, we put together a very, very good plan and i didnt see any chaos whatsoever once we got into the throes of the operation.
