Shortly after they escaped the country the State Department released a statement claiming that it had facilitated their safe departure. Any notion the federal government deserves the credit for this operation is in his Opinion Quote absolute nonsense. The incountry State Department officials are eager to help. There is a cooperation there but this is politics being played out by the State Department. They are the issue. There are major concerns whether the military can properly vet the thousands of afghan refugees coming to the united states. Well talk a lot about this process of how they figured out who should come and who shouldnt. Jennifer griffin spoke exclusively with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs mark milley. Part of Thaifr Conversation was about the Vetting Process. Getting the names registered. Doing the biometrics. Check iriss and do fingerprints and full facial photo and run that against the 20 years of databases that we have in the interagency and run it against the nctc checks and f. B. I. Checks. If the individual has some sort of derogatory Information Or Something suspect at all. It will pop up as red or yellow. A lot in that interview over the weekend. We were given access to anyone we wanted to interview at three u. S. Military bases in europe. Ramstein, italy and spain where the f. B. I. Customs and Border Patrol and ncis had agents overseeing the screening of 17,000 afghan evacuees. We saw the biomet trick Screening Process and learned anyone flagged for Drug And Terror ties or u. S. Watch list is sent to the u. S. Military base in kosovo. The thousands of afghans who have been sent to the u. S. Have been screened three times before arrival. Was it very difficult for you to get out . It was hard. No One Care about you. My father was inside the Air Force and thats why we couldnt get into the airport. Bill many Were Garts at the u. S. Embassy and worked for government entities. Some among the 600 afghan Special Forces who helped guard the Kabul Airport in the final days including this interpreter who we interviewed. I feel very happy we are safe now. When i was in kabul in afghanistan i was very afraid of being captured by taliban. Right now im very happy. This Brother And Sister were students. One has a full ride to the University Of Kentucky louisville. We interviewed many University Students like this 21yearold Student from American University Of Kabul who left her entire family to escape. Taliban was gunfire and crowds and everything. That day exactly the explosion. We saw it by my own eyes. I just saw the explosion and suddenly everything was so messed up. My family just told me you just go and save your life. It is all right. We will stay here. Tony blinken said this morning there will be an accounting of who was flown out of Kabul Eligible for visas in the coming weeks. A lot of that accounting had to be done after they left kabul given the deadline set by the Taliban And Desire to help as many u. S. Allies as possible officials tell us. Thats why this screening is being done at u. S. Military bases in the Middle East and europe. U. S. Military and State Department were not just letting any afghan through those gates. There were spotters that helped them including those from the c. I. A. They chose who to let in all being done with the fear that Suicide Bombers would manage to get onto the tarmac. Quite a feet. Joining me now is congressman Andy Biggs member of the House Oversight and judiciary committees. You are demanding answers about the Vetting Process. Jennifer griffin was on the ground in europe taking a look at how all of this is being done. Talking to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. What do you think about that report . Does it put your mind at ease at all where this Vetting Process is concerned . Well, martha, thank you for having me. You know, we knew there was Vetting Process going on with fingerprint and biometrics, etc. But what we dont know is what we dont know. That is what were these folks doing in afghanistan . So right now the vast majority of people coming in as refugees are coming in on a parole. Not sivs, special interest visa. The vast majority are coming in that Homeland Security mayorkas is able to use. Weve asked for specifics. There are a lot of generalities being stated out there. We dont know what they did in afghanistan. What were they doing in afghanistan, these individuals . There are a lot of them helping u. S. Troops and soldiers and deserve certainly to receive Siv Status. But the reality is, even with what general milley was describing to jennifer, it doesnt tell us what was going on incountry per se. It tells us what we know in our databases. When you have somebody cross our border, and we vet them for what we know about them in our databases, we have no idea what they were doing in their homeland. Thats a big concern to us. What you touch on is that the majority of the sivs were left behind. We heard that from the general in charge. A lot of these are refugees who wanted to get out for various reasons and we just heard about that Vetting Process. But what my mind goes to in this conversation is why a lot of this Wasnt Done Months ago as we looked at the Exit Plan for afghanistan, which was clear. The president said he wanted to be out initially by September 11th and moved it up to august 31st. There were concerns about having that day with all the weight it carries. And now even a lot of democrats are very critical about the planning that went into this. We know so many Siv Applications went out months and years ago for some of these individuals we could have been looking at all this carefully. Senator blumenthal. Listen to this. Its a quote. He says ive been deeply frustrated, even furious at our Governments Delay and inaction. Plenty of time to seek accountability for a inexcusable bureaucratic Red Tape. Our focus is getting planes in the air and safely to our Air Base in doha where theyve already been cleared to land. Obviously there is a lot of people very unhappy with how this whole thing was handled on both sides. Yeah, martha, thats for sure. Dont forget we have americans that are left behind. We do have a lot of sivs left in there and this could have been prevented. All of this could have been prevented and done in a more orderly fashion. You know, Thats Part of my problem with Secretary Blinken. It was his team that failed on this and put this country and our allies in very serious jeopardy. It is interesting, he is going to testify before congress early part of next week. What would you want to ask him . What do you think needs to be questioned for Antony Blinken with the unenvyable task of getting people out. This has been clearly pushed to the State Department and their responsibility prior to all of this. President biden wants the move on, we know that. They want to leave this behind. I think Secretary Blinken whether have to answer what were the plans and why were they executed so poorly . Was he listening to intelligence . The Intelligence Community from what i have understood from briefings ive heard, they were giving the correct information. That is that the taliban would come in and overrun the country immediately. Why were they not listening to the Intelligence Community . What did they think was going to happen differently . Then i think we need to get into the full Vetting Process. There was something to say to comment about what Senator Graham said, something i said to you a couple of months ago when we were in new York City you asked me the question what keeps you awake at night . I said i was concerned about the will of the american president to take decisive action when it was needed. And the current president i dont believe has the will to take decisive action when needed. He has a Track Record that shows that. It goes back to most importantly when we had osama Bin Laden in our Gun Sights in the Situation Room he recommended to President Barack Obama he not go after him. To answer Senator Graham, i think if something happens in afghanistan or external afghanistan, im not too sure the President Of The United States has the will to engage going forward in an event like that. This did not have to happen. When we worked the peace agreement. I worked that for President Trump for four years in the White House. He brought me into the White House and one of the tasks he gave me to do is oversee the afghan peace process, which we did. We had a close plan to set with the taliban which part of that agreement was that they would not support any type of external threat to the united states of america. That means Al Qaeda or anybody else or any other threat to the united states. You can read it. Pull it up on the State Department website and see what would actually happen and what we said. It is so stunning to look at this. I think that the taliban agrees with you on the backbone of the president in terms of what he would be willing to do, to push them back. Weve seen that process over the last several months. They knocked over every single village all along the way and now according to their own reports theyve managed to clear the valley in the north where the last resistance was holding out up there and now it seems like probably as this Journal Piece points out with the help of u. S. Military, you know, guns and vehicles they probably used those in order to do that. So then you have Antony Blinken saying the taliban has committed to let anyone out of the country with proper documents. They can leave in a safe and orderly manner. They have said this privately and publicly to us many times. So i just think it turns a lot of peoples stomachs to listen to the language that were using when we talk about whether or not the taliban is going to allow american citizens to leave the country if they have proper documents, general. Yeah, one word reaction, really . No, theyre not going to do that. They have all the cards. Theyve run us out of the country. It was a strategic debacle going forward and they dont believe well back anything up with force. Thats one thing you say about President Trump, when he decided to use force, we used it and used it forcefully. We got soleimani, baghdadi, we went after the syrian targets when they used nerve gas. He wasnt afraid to use aggressive action when we needed to. Biden hasnt done that. His entire national Security Team has proved they arent willing to do that. I have real concerns and questions about us and the taliban supporting us in doing anything. Theyll do what they want to do, not what we want to do. Based on data in the last decade. 90 of Central Americans who seek asylum they dont show up in court or dont qualify. It is about getting to the united states and using the loopholes to do it.
